The entire premise relies on Lindon being the one inside and Yerin being on the outside. If their roles were reversed Lindon, especially at the time, wouldn't be rushing into the portal the moment he heard there were multiple enemies. He'd be preparing for a fight or trying to analyze how to best slip past his minder. And Yerin, meanwhile, wouldn't be attempting to cut Lindon off because of the danger from the truegolds while inside the pocket world. She was nearly rabid at that point, that kind of thinking wasn't happening. That means the portal would've stayed open, they'd have to wait for the two additional truegolds to show up, and Yerin probably would've been ejected without being stuck. Not to mention how different it would've been if **Mercy** had been in there alongside Yerin instead of Lindon and Orthos.

Durge1764

This is the best answer

caime9

Im not sure I agree. Even at that point Yerin, even in the heat of her own battles would stop to help Lindon if he was in trouble. Shes always been protective of him. Lindon while I agree he is a thinker, if he thought yerin was in immediate danger, I don't see him waiting at all. So if Lindon charged the portal and Harmony was getting ready to slice him in half the moment he arrived I could see yerin cutting the portal to save Lindon. If Mercy was trapped as well they would have definitely died IMO. No way harmony lets her go, and Mercy was super weak at that point.

brnape

I just cannot see Lindon, the lowgold packrat at that point, *charging* into the portal. And honestly, while I agree Yerin was protective of Lindon I don't think she would've thought along the lines of cutting him off from the rest of them; she was always more concerned with winning the battle and generally convinced she could. Her immediate reaction to the portal closing was to try and kill her Truegold minder, that doesn't speak to me of a sound state of mind and tactical thinking. Now if Yerin and Mercy go in, I'm not at all convinced Yerin would die because that would require Harmony to deal with Mercy. And, as I recall, the whole clan had a rule of not interfering with (aiding or hindering) Mercy at that point. Like, what happens if he attacks Yerin and Mercy jumps in the way? Is that her losing her bet with Malice or is that Harmony screwing up the bet?

caime9

But the whole reason she wanted to kill Bai Ro was that he held her back from helping Lindon. She wasn't in sound state of mind after the portal closed, but that was because she had no way of knowing if he was alive or dead. And, just my opinion, but I could def see Lindon jumping in to help her, in Skysworn we saw him immediately speed after a Truegold when he took a passed-out Yerin to drop her over the city.

AZ_hiking2022

Yerin hits everything head on and would have been killed in the first minutes by Harmony just like almost happened as she was rushing to the portal blind. Team Lindon/Yerin are so good as they balance each other out. A lot of what saved Lindon in GW was his willingness to retreat and diffuse until he had no choice but by then he was stronger and more informed

2427543

Yerin has good survival instincts. When she and Lindon first arrived in the wilds, she flexed her power against the weaker Jai clan members, but was wise enough to avoid and not anger the stronger ones. Remember how she insisted they escape out of the provided room? She might not get as many benefits from Ghost water as Lindon did, but she'd survive it.

Retbull

Sandviper sect weaklings.

caime9

She would have to figure out how to escape, though, which would be difficult without dross's aid.

RedHavoc1021

I don’t think so, honestly. Yerin was stronger than Lindon, but idk if she had the power to handle Akura Harmony. She also probably wouldn’t have been able to jury rig Dross. My guess is she would’ve died in battle against either Ekeri or Harmony, possibly even Yan Shoumei.

interested_commenter

No, Yerin definitely handles Ekeri. Lindon beats her in pretty much a straight-up fight. At that point Highgold Yerin is significantly stronger than Lowgold Lindon. The question is whether Yerin would have been able to avoid getting into a real fight with Harmony at the start. I think that first fight where Ekeri injures Orthos and Lindon runs Yerin would fight her and could win, but only as long as she didn't provoke Harmony into more than the single attack he threw at Lindon. If so I think she's patient enough to stop at the spirit pool long enough to hit Truegold, and as a Truegold I think she and Orthos beat Harmony 2v1 even without Dross.

slothdionysus

Or would she even have walked away from Harmony?

Citizen404

She ran and hid from the sect when they killed her Sage. She knows when to walk away.

DonrajSaryas

And by that point she probably knows enough about the Akura to step lightly around a hostile one.

slothdionysus

But she didn't run away from the sect. The sage sent her away, and She began guerrilla warfare to try and eliminate them. She wasn't going anywhere with the remnant and sword

Citizen404

I think that's similar to Lindon breaking the gate back to island trapping everyone in the Ghostwater facility.

B_024

She wouldn’t have been able to rig up Dross, and likely died against Harmony as a result, or just failed to make an escape from Ghostwater.

Andrew_42

Honestly it's a miracle Lindon did. If you were to open 200 instances of Cradle with randomized Fate, 100 where Lindon is trapped inside and 100 where Yerin is trapped inside, I bet Yerin survives a bit more often. However, there are a few caveats. Yerin almost certainly never obtains, much less completes Dross (may his name be praised). There is a good chance she finds the Spirit well, but a lower chance of finding the Life well or the Mind Well. She likely advances to True Gold and defeats another competitor in order to steal their gate stone. If she finds the life well, she will probably find the path to obtaining a drop of Ghostwater. I have no idea what her chances are against Akura Harmony, but they aren't THAT bad. Critically Akura Harmony relies on cutting attacks, and an axe. While the Shadow's Edge doesn't use sword madra, it is still a cutting technique and I think falls into the category of attack styles Yerin can respond to well (even if responding just means getting out of the way). The critical moment likely occurs when Yerin is able to obtain a drop of ghostwater herself, after surviving Akura Harmony's ghostwater barrage. Dross (may his name be praised) likely dies in Ghostwater, or there is a slim chance the broken construct is retrieved from Ghostwater since Yerin might think Lindon would want to look at him. Even if Lindon gets his hand on Dross (may his name be praised) without the other wells he won't ever be able to form Dross (may his name be praised) into the invaluable mind spirit he is in our timeline. However, his spark of awareness may be able to be incorporated by Lindon into another construct, resulting in an advanced construct. A Dross (may his name be praised) powered Archstone Hunger Arm may well have helped Lindon unlock the consuming abilities of the arm even faster. But alas, that version of him would never reach the heights of the Dreadgod-Deflecting, Illusion-Piercing, Battle-Planning, Eithan-Detecting pint sized demigod Dross that we got in our timeline. (may his name be praised)

Vaxtros

Thank you for showing Dross (may his name be praised) the proper deference.

ahdjeisk23

May his name be praised 😂

Mattriculated

I'm not going to weigh in on the other questions, but when thinking about the creation of Dross, a Yerin alteenative path occurs to me... Ruby feeding from the Wells.

caime9

Good point. If she didn't keep a hold of it, but if it did feed who knows if we end up with ruby and not crusher 2.0

Dnahelicases

Yerin most likely dies not from weakness but from an inability to back down. In some of those instances she lets the blood shadow loose or uses it in some way, either surviving or killing others. However, when she does make a similar tactical retreat, I bet she does find the dream well and dross. She would pick him up, but he wouldn’t get incorporated into the key - he’d stay a ball. Good chance he still gets to the other wells, eats dream seeds, and lives in her head. He can still be a guide and interact with everything before he’s a key. Ziel offers different counsel if they run into each other. No telling what happens there. She would probably avoid him. She doesn’t stay as long as Lindon in any one place. The chance of running into the same people are different. No void key, only drinks what she can and carries a few bottles back for Lindon. If she finds Dross, she probably gets back to the other gate way before Harmony gets there. Dross isn’t part of the key though, so he is still a spirit but never gets the ghostwater treatment. Yerin likely does. If she doesn’t find Dross, she runs around until she finds a gate stone, kill someone, gets help from Ziel, or gets killed.

MaxAvery

Everyone here who is saying that Yerin is killed by harmony is missing the very interesting possibility of harmony taking an interest in the sages disciple. Because he would know the value of a sage and then we get cradles new favorite ship...Yermany.

Ekeri was after Lindon because she thought a low gold with a big pack would be loaded with treasures. If he's lost his pack and fled on his own, I bet she'd have left him. Especially after wounding Orthos so badly.

prochicken

I dont think yerin would have problems fighting anyone in ghost water but she never would be able to escape before the world collapsed without dross and say she made dross and the same thing happens where harmony takes him, i dont know if yerin could have destroyed the hatch down to the exit since blackflame is perfect for that where her path isnt

StartledPelican

Setting aside plot armor, no. Due to her "cut your way through problems" attitude, she would have died fighting at the entrance against Harmony or, perhaps, Yan Shoumei. There is an outside chance that her and Ziel manage to win/prevent her death. Maybe she ends up traveling Ghostwater with Ziel? Ok, I change my mind. Her survival is a solid shmaybe. Perhaps even a gold plated shmaybe.

boltgun_to_the_face

I really don't think so. Most of the people in Ghostwater were significantly better prepared, and a bit above both Yerin and Lindon in terms of abilities and power. I think it might have been a longer fight, but Yerin would still bite the bullet. I don't think Orthos would tip the scales enough to assist. I think Lindon very much won by fighting a running battle, retreating, and then ensuring that he kept developing when others like Ekeri were pretty much just vibing out. That doesn't really seem like Yerin and Orthos' style, and I think Harmony would probably have ended up fighting and either mortally wounding or killing both Yerin and Orthos quite fast, or just messing them up enough that Ekeri or Yan Shoumei mop them up.

livingstondh

A lot of potential factors here, but the bottom line is, if Lowgold Lindon can, Highgold Yerin should be able to. She won't be able to build Dross though. Main battles: Ekeri - if Lindon can win this Yerin can win this. Ekeri...does not have the mentality for the sacred arts. She screams "I was handed all my power and never had to work for it". She was outwitted at pretty much every turn by Lindon, and basically plays on tilt the entire fight. Harmony: If Yerin hits Truegold which she should with the spirit well, she should be able to handle Harmony, especially if she lets loose the blood shadow. She dueled two Underlords to a standstill as a Truegold, so you'd think she can handle one Truegold who isn't even the best in his clan, and is outright stated not to be a special talent. In hindsight, Harmony is not as strong as he was built up to be during the book. He could not even discover his UL revelation without the tree. His mentality is also not well suited for the sacred arts. The man would have burned Lindon's entire family and clan to ash for the sin of beating him. That is not the stable mental foundation you need to progress through the Lord stage.

khisanthmagus

You are ignoring the critical first battle just inside the facility. Yerin would not have been as willing as Lindon to run away from the fight, which would have had her potentially fighting Harmony as a highgold.

livingstondh

I ignored it because it's pretty much impossible to say what would have happened. There are a ton of variables. If Lindon doesn't destroy the portal you might have up to 2 additional sects joining. The remaining factions would be less bloodlusted as well not having to use gatestones. Yerin might even have been fast enough to save Renfei which changes a lot. Also, while Yerin is more aggressive than Lindon in that situation, I have a hard time picturing her throwing herself against a group of Truegolds for no reason. She wouldn't give two plucked hairs about Renfei getting killed. At least not enough to throw herself into a not hopeless but extremely difficult battle.

Head_Ologist

If Yerin were trapped in ghostwater, I think she would have found dross in the well and could have taken Ekeri. She’s closer to Ekeri’s level than Lindon and has a great deal more training. From there, everything goes differently though because Ekeri probably doesn’t get away using her portal stone and even if she does there’s no telltale signs of blackflame to point Sophara in their direction. As such, Mercy and Lindon don’t have to spend all their time hiding from the dragons, they make it through the other gate and into ghostwater fairly quickly and spend some time learning things themselves. Too many branches of fate from there to say what else happens though

tievel1

I think yes. Things would have played out differently, but while she wouldn't have gotten a baby presence, several factors go in her favor. For one, she would presumably be with mercy. So that right there is a big factor. Second, she needs far less time at each well to gain benefit, and also benefits more from combat due to her personality. Finally, even if things go the same way for her as Lindon until the last biome, without Dross tied to the gem she has no need to fight Harmony. I can think of a few ways it plays out, but basically while Lindon walked the razor thin path of maximum possible benefit (dross), Yerin has enough head start that she needs fewer things to go rift in order to escape.

dconley01

I think there wouldn’t have been any fighting with Yerin. I believe that people thinking the sword sage was still alive would have been a strong enough deterrent to keep them from killing her. I think she would have been more aggressive however, i think that fighting to the death wouldn’t have happened like some nameless skysworn etc.

DrSunnyD

Yes, she's a main character

Innman7

No one is taking about Yan Shoumei, the Redmoon Hall candidate who currently thinks Yerin is a servant of Anagi. Yerin probably doesn’t go after Harmony (she has no problem with the Akura clan, and Harmony is more interested in his own advancement than fighting others), and Ekeri wouldn’t pursue overmuch someone who isnt worth it. So Yerin, who hates Redmoon Hall, and Yan Shoumei, who thinks Yerin is out against her, fight. Yan Shoumei, as an UKT candidate, a Truegold, and with a more powerful Blood Shadow, defeats Yerin (and probably consumes her Blood Shadow). Yerin may be able to escape, depending on where they fight. If it’s in the gate room, Ziel intercedes on Yerin’s side and Harmony attacks both parties, so it would end up a tie And then there is Charity. Charity probably becomes involved more. Lindon is (thought to be) weak enough not to make any changes to the proceedings, but Yerin is a Sage’s disciple. Lindon will tell her that Adama is dead, but that’s less believable coming from a Lowgold. This probably doesn’t result in Yerin’s death, but prevents her from gaining any benefit.
