Timing currency exchange is always speculative. I would not anticipate any major moves in the exchange rate which would make a material difference in the cost of their trip. Airfare and lodging will be the major expenses and for best choices those should be arranged starting soon. Delaying reservations for the sake of a possible positive change in rates risks not finding good flights and places to stay. For many visitors it can be best to carry only small amounts of cash. Unless they are on an incredibly tight budget, just let the exchange rate be what it is. September is not that far off

My mum is coming in July. I told her to not bring any money. I'll give her everything she needs, and pay me back in Euros. We both avoid the exchange fees, and I'll use Euros eventually when I visit home. As someone else says, timing currencies is speculative even for the most knowledgeable people.

You're effectively buying Euros at a high rate. Fine if you think the yen will fall further against the Euro.

I only asked how my parents can convert currency and somehow I've started world war 3 over here.

Illustrious_Part8115

lol Euros

Femtow

Yah, Euros. Why?

Unless they withdraw a silly amount of cash to be carrying around, they will likely either need to withdraw cash again while in country or use their card in country. You can hedge the currency going up or down by withdrawing some cash now and withdrawing some later at a different time (e.g. day of the trip or while in country) If they plan to spend about £4k, they could get £2k cash now and spend £2k on a travel card or their credit card/withdraw from card while in country. That way there's less risk of currency going up or down wildly on the whole £4k.

It’s a great exchange rate right now. If I were visiting Japan, I’d exchange now. You don’t know what’ll happen until September. You could always buy some yen now and some more in a few months. Setting up a wish account would be a great way to get nice exchange rates.

kinoshitajona

Don’t think about it. You admitted you don’t know anything about it. You are not a Wall Street trader. Stop trying to time the market to try and make extra money or something. Just tell your family to bring their credit/debit cards and withdraw from the ATM when they get here. 7-11 has good ATMs and are open 24/7. Carrying around 20,000 yen just in case you run into stores or restaurants that don’t take cards is fine.

BME84

It's always better to withdraw cash by atm in-country and use pay with local currency with debit/credit cards.

fakemanhk

Unless they are going to spend million JPY otherwise I don't see how much benefits you can get from all those calculations

Your parents are coming in September so they’re already getting a great deal compared with a couple of decades ago. The amount of money they are probably going to be exchanging makes this conversation pretty much irrelevant. Just understand that they are going to be getting a good deal
