In Kdramas, a character performing an act or a dance performance is usually MY FAVORITE non-romantic moment in a kdrama: (Excluding any Karaoke or Musical performances shown in Dramas) 1. **Reply 1988:** The Sobangcha dance performance; Deok-sun's practice and the epic audition fails 2. **Start Up:** Nam Do-San's hilarious "GIVE ME MONEY" 3. **2521:** Na Hee-do and Moon Ji-woong dance practice 4. **Lovely Runner:** "*Tae-sung Joha Taesung"* dance

Funky_Impact8870

Haha, that reminds me of the local festival in **Hometown Cha Cha Cha** when Hye-Jin helps out the teenage daughter of the café owner by dancing on stage. Du-Sik joins them and she's like "Do you know the dance?" - No he doesn't. Hometown Cha cha cha was my first Kdrama and back then I was totally confused: why would you know a dance of a popular song _by heart_?! 3 years later I'm as shocked as Hye-Jin by his plain no. 😂

writtenpoeticsins

>2. Start Up: Nam Do-San's hilarious "GIVE ME MONEY" I watched the clip of it. It almost convinced me to watch **Start Up**. It is on my Plan To Watch list but it's not a priority for now.

DazzlingMama303

Then you must watch The Atypical Family. I loved, loved, loved the teen dance competition entry that featured the amazing child actors (also seen in Castaway Diva and See you in my 19th Life).

Gimpknee

Frankly Speaking had a really cute children's play underlining the main theme of the story. But since Reply 1988 got a mention, there's the karaoke callback in My Roommate is a Gumiho with the ML singing Yoon Soo-il's Apartment for the FL, who was also the FL in Reply, which used the song in the OST as it was contemporary to the setting.

papichula2

Uhm tae goo s voice should be made into asmr videos

Bananacake2601

Dare to love me is a very basic Kdrama, but I’m enjoying it. It’s easy to watch☺️

Watchnextnow

Sometimes simple is best rather than every drama having to shoehorn crazy sub-plots like serial killers or evil MILs. I might give it a go… I’m in the mood for a simple easy watch.

Local-Raspberry-5649

I am rewatching **Atypical Family**. I just couldn’t stay away any longer. I really want to pinpoint what I love so much about this drama so that I can find something similar. - the characters and how they all grow? - the family aspect? I do love how they become a makeshift family pretty quickly and are parenting together. - the sacrificial, “gift of the magi” love for each other? (This is what I call it when each person has to sacrifice something big for the other person’s happiness.) - the way the story unfolds? - the way the story is so tightly told from start to finish? (It answers all my questions and follows the rules it set for itself.) I don’t know, but this show feels like peak romance to me and if anyone has a recommendation that is similar, please share. (Yes, I have seen Lovely Runner and loved it but haven’t been moved to rewatch it. I also watched the cdrama that’s similar—Present is Present—and I found it just fine.)

onceiwaskingofspain

You won't find the tone similar - TAF has a very Victorian gothic novel vibe - but for intensely devotional, morally questionable and mutually self-sacrificial love try: * **Chicago Typewriter**: Present reincarnation fantasy romcom, past epic tragedy set during the Japanese occupation. FL, ML and SML all made a choice between love or country and it plays out devastatingly in both time periods as it unfolds. But you'll have to suffer through a frenetic first four episode prologue to get to the substance of the story. * **I Hear Your Voice**: The classic multi-genre melo/romcom thriller. FL saved mind-reading ML from the man that murdered his father and he returns ten years later to repay the favor; only now they both need saving. Also highlights parent-child bonds, >!generational guilt!< and the limits of filial pietal love with top tier narrative parallelism. * **Secret**: Four individuals connected by a tragic accident get caught in a web of revenge, regret and redemption. Heavy makjang melo so a bit of a soap opera but one of the most humanistic; it's hard to hate any of the leads because they're all damaged people trying to process their trauma. They just keep making bad choices, until they don't. * **Someday or One Day**: After FL's boyfriend's death she wakes up in the past with a different body and meets ML who looks exactly like him. Tdrama that touched off the current wave of butterfly effect time slip romances; by far the best IMO for the storytelling, acting and direction. The ending is >!bittersweet,!< similar to TAF. Some sageuks would also fit the description like **My Dearest** or **The Princess's Man** if you're fine with historicals.

Borinquena

Try the Cdrama **Will Love in Spring**, about the romance between a woman who lost her leg in a car accident and a man who works as a mortician. The characters are deeply flawed and often do hurtful things to each other because of past trauma and the stigma they experience due to disability and death. But they both grow into better people and help each other heal. I absolutely loved this one and emotionally I think it shares a lot in common with Atypical Family even though the plot is very different.

Watchnextnow

I’m getting so sick of characters talking to themselves at the top of their voice in a public place and nobody batting an eyelid. As though this is perfectly normal behaviour. To be fair this is usually a romcom technique. I’ve rarely seen it used in other genres. Can’t writers convey the character’s thoughts and emotions through other techniques? If we must have every passing thought spelled out to us at least keep it as a thought in the character’s mind rather than as a conversation they are having out loud with themselves. It just feels really jarring and excessively over the top. If you read all the way to the end of my rant thanks for listening lol.

Significant_Fold_658

I react different to this depending on their situation. If the character is alone, I don't mind it that much, but if they are just talking out loud while in a public place filled with people, that is so weird. Last night, I was watching an episode of **Age of Youth 2** and one of the female leads was just talking to herself, passing many of her college colleagues while she repeated the same 2 phrases over and over again. Everyone ignored her and I understand the ignoring part because I would do the same, but no one raises an eyebrow? I would raise my eyebrow or make a quick eye move to double check if I was the only one noticing this. lol

ShazInCA

I always say in an American show a troubled woman will take a shower to think. In a KDrama a troubled woman will talk to herself and it's the men who take the shower. At least when Sam Soon did this her sister called her out on it. "Do you still do that? Do you still talk to yourself?" and I think that's the only time I've noticed that happen.

Significant_Fold_658

Ahah that is a good comparison! I actually don't find it weird when a character gets lost in their thoughts while taking a shower... Maybe because I do this all the time, it's a good way to organize my thoughts and I actually come up with creative ideas while in shower (I work in a creative field). But if I start shouting all of my thoughts... that is when it gets as weird as talking to myself in a public space, but not as weird. ahah The Sam Soon that you mentioned, is it **My Lovely Sam Soon**? I might watch it... I like how her sister roasted her is such a kind way, but also makes it a joke out of this common action that we see in k-dramas. ahah

ShazInCA

Yes, also known as My Name is Kim Sam Soon. The recaps at DramaBeans are under that name and are excellent for explaining cultural and social things I would have missed.

Significant_Fold_658

Thanks! I know very little about this drama and had no idea that they used both names. I will read some of those recaps to see if I pick this up. 😊

Watchnextnow

Yes I totally agree. If the character is alone it’s much more believable and doesn’t bother me at all. Or the occasional mumbled thought is fine and is sometimes even funny.

Significant_Fold_658

Sometimes I look at those scenes and wonder what happened. Was this the end product because of a trend, someone got lazy / had no time left for editing or is it a problem where the actors are extremely bad at delivering good facial expressions that would work well for inner thoughts. In the scene I saw in **Age of Youth 2**, looks like a mix of a trend at the time, bad editing choices and even a bad actress that always has some really overly exaggerated expressions... In the end, the scene was so stupid that instead of being funny, it made me raise my eyebrows.

nlkt

I’m currently watching I Am Not a Robot because I want something light to go with Signal, which I also started watching. I really like the ML actor in IANAR. I have watched a few episodes of him in Moonshine because my mom was watching it before. But aside from that, I don’t really see much of his work in streaming sites. I hope he gets more projects so I can watch more of him. For now, I settled for some of his clips in Running Man 😅

Significant_Fold_658

>I hope he gets more projects so I can watch more of him. Yoo Seung Ho started his career as a child actor in 2000. His filmography has a pretty decent number of works, on dramas alone he has 17 main roles, you can find 8 of them on Viki and another 4 on Kocowa. You might find some of the remaining works on youtube.

Borinquena

He plays God in Arang and the Magistrate in a long white wig, silly costume but it's a fun role.

WhatHmmHuh

I recently rewatched IANAR and it has such a sensitive, poignant scene in the middle of a crazy fun RomCom.

RossSkyWalkerr

watching the classic "Winter Sonata" Man! it's just so different from every K drama I've watched, dialogues, costumes, the whole vibe of that show just feels so beautiful and all real like it's not all flawless, glamorous like most Romantic Drama's are nowadays, I'm enjoying it so far knowing very well it can also be all heartbreaking

StarlightJem

Nice! Love that one. So beautiful. The soundtrack is great too.

PolkaDotsMakeMeHappy

I'm no art expert but I have noticed Mark Rothko paintings in at least 4 different Kdramas. They're in the wealthy homes and offices. Is he well-known in Korea?

Borinquena

I noticed the same thing! I don't know if he's well known in Korea, maybe it's just easy to get posters and they fit the vibe of an ultra wealthy person's home.

PolkaDotsMakeMeHappy

I have 2 in my home. Maybe the wealth will follow!

Significant_Fold_658

Do you remember in which dramas you saw these paintings? I saw them too and I can't remember where. But what I noticed from looking into kdramas ppl is that there was a time where those poster companies were really famous and they appear in most credits. I also noticed that older kdramas tend to have posters or paintings blurred, at least when they add them in our streaming platforms.

PolkaDotsMakeMeHappy

I recently saw it in Military Prosecutor Doberman, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and I think Queen of Tears. I'm scrolling through My Drama List and getting confused where I saw the other. I wouldn't put money on the ones I noted above but I am certain that there were 4 different dramas that had Rothkos. There is no mistaking them

Significant_Fold_658

You can find the PPL list for **What's Wrong with Secretary Kim** in [here](https://m.cafe.naver.com/ca-fe/web/cafes/21715564/articles/1474?fromList=true&tc=cafe_home_all_articles). In their props they listed the company PROP.A, which I can't seem to reverse image to find the website and [Cyan Design](http://www.cyandesign.co.kr/), doesn't have much paintings but has some photo paintings. Maybe the one that was responsible for the painting was that first one, but it doesn't seem to be a poster company. The ppl for **Queen of Tears** is also available in [here](https://m.cafe.naver.com/ca-fe/web/cafes/21715564/articles/2050?fromList=true&tc=cafe_home_all_articles). They have a huge list of prop cooperation and one specifically for art cooperation, they listed [Park Seo Bo Foundation](https://parkseobofoundation.org/introduction), [Pyo Gallery](https://www.pyogallery.com/), [Kim Tschang Yeul Art Museum](https://www.galleryhyundai.com/artist/view/20000000102), [Via Canvas](https://viacanvas.kr/), Pattie Boyd and Eltraby. I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct translation of some of these names, but some are indeed correct. It looks like they were probably borrowed paintings... not sure. I also remember [this article](https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2024/06/398_373600.html) and [this article](https://www.mk.co.kr/en/society/11002502). It looks like Pyo Gallery was responsible for selecting each painting, sculpture and artwork that we saw in this drama. Also fun note, I don't think it's a Mark Rothko painting in **Queen of Tears**, it's a [Noh Jung Ran](http://www.jungrannoh.com/art_works/?language=e&left_menu=2&art_name=2016) painting, they have somewhat very similar styles in their abstract paintings. I can't find the ppl for **Military Prosecutor Doberman**, I would need to check the credits one by one and it's the only one that I have not watched, but from what I know from the plot... I don't think it had that big of an investment to detail than for example **Queen of Tears**. It's likely a poster company.

PolkaDotsMakeMeHappy

thank you for doing the research!

Funky_Impact8870

Waw that list is impressive

Borinquena

This is very cool, thanks for sharing

Borinquena

It's also in **My Sweet Mobster**

Excellent_Piece900

Night and Day is an interesting Netflix k-drama after so damn long!

mishamaro

I'm currently watching Doom At Your Service... I'm... Surprised. The first few episodes I was so sure I was gonna DNF this show. SO sure... I don't even know when it happened but I was suddenly binging the series and I'm CRYING. Like... How did I get here?! Ive learned a few things about myself though: 1. I've learned that I prefer a bit of supernatural (Goblin, Doom, LotBS, etc.) or kind of absurd/violence (Vincenzo, Shop for Killers) in my shows. (Which means Death's Game is in my near future I think). There's always exceptions but this has become my trend. 2. I will ALWAYS be a sucker for a doomed romance. Even if it's just doomed until the penultimate/ultimate episode (cuz I like my happy endings TYVM). I blame being raised on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and being Team Angel. I was born from that angst, I now LIVE for it. Lol please tell me I'm not the only one. 3. I love the ML staring at the phone waiting for a call/text trope. If it's the girl, meh. But if it's the guy? My heart FLUTTERS. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and Park Hyung Sik is probably the best one, but Ive been a sucker for every iteration I've seen of this so far... Is there a list/compilation of this anywhere? Because I need a watch list...

Gimpknee

Scripting Your Destiny might be worth checking out. It's short and to the point, plays on Goblin, and also feels kind of neat in the way it plays with its world and kdrama tropes.

DawgMom2018

Usaually love stories with mortals and god beings are problematic - especially in dramas such as Korean Odyssey. This one made it work to solve the problem. Also the acting by Seo In-guk was so good - he convinces me that he is an other wordly being by his head tilt when observing human behavor, and other small expressions for that character. I don't know if you have seen Moving - I loved Death's Game.

mayurmatada12

Guys is We are breaking up now good? I watched the trailer and the saw the poster and images on mdl. It's so tempting, But the reviews are so bad.

MissSimpleton

I trust the reviews. Plus, it has got bad ratings everywhere. 6 points something is very poor. Having said that, each one of us has different taste. You can watch 1-2 eps and see for yourself, whether you like it.

miwiargh

I really liked that drama. But it seems I’m alone in that mostly. It kinda feels similar to Encounter to me? I’m not sure why but when I watched Encounter I found myself thinking about “Now we are breaking up” a lot. I didn’t like Encounter and had to hate watch it. Meanwhile I plan to rewatch Now we are breaking up. I guess if you like Encounter you prob won’t like the other drama. And vice versa. But you could just give it a try? And see what you think? I think you should be able to tell fairly quickly if you like it or not.

myweithisway

I like both though I do think NWABU is the superior one of the two. I do wonder if NWABU would hold up as well upon a rewatch because it felt like one of those dramas that came to me at the right time and place and watching it was a whole experience in helping me process certain IRL feelings (not that my IRL is anywhere remotely that dramatic or dreamy).

miwiargh

I really liked Encounter at first but somehow I started to dislike it. I think it was the mothers? I felt like there were too many toxic characters. Maybe I also watched Encounter at the wrong time too? Yeah I’m not sure if NWABU would be as good on a rewatch. Especially since I feel like I still remember so much of the plot. For me too I felt like I watched it at the right moment and time too. I still find myself thinking about it at times. If only real life was that dreamy… haha!!

chelleml

To me, this kidrama is a good example of pretty leads with no substance to the characters and plot. And for a kdrama that is supposed to have a spicy romance, the lead actors had no chemistry. As someone who likes slow melodramas, I tried really hard to get through this but dropped it because it was so bland.

KANJI667

>!On episode 10 of hometown cha - cha - cha, and I loved episode 9, where Du - sik spends time with Hye - jin's family.!< >!Du - sik and Hye - jin's father have amazing chemistry together, I hope I'll see them again together in the future episodes.!< >!I also don't feel any tension with this love triangle that's been going on, it's not interesting to me at all.!< and people weren't lying when they said that the pacing for this show is really slow.

MissSimpleton

This is a drama one should watch after something serious-like Mouse or Kingdom where there is too much going on. HCCC then becomes a calm, soothing, breezy watch with a mystery on the side. It is a slow but relaxing drama.

KANJI667

That's true. The k drama I watched previously to this was true beauty. I am enjoying it though, just wish it would pick up the pace a little bit.

Local-Raspberry-5649

I’m actually rewatching this right now! I saw these two episodes last night so it’s fresh in my head. I adore this drama so, so much. It’s my number one rewatch show. The vibe is unbeatable thanks to the perfect ost, ample ocean waves, and seagulls mewing. I want to live in Gongjin. Personally, I don’t think it’s slow (lord knows I can name dozens of dramas I consider slow, especially cdramas). But, if I had to nitpick, I would say that I do wish we had more steamy moments in it. For example, they could have given us a steamier second couple, even though I do like the second couple in this, too. The main couple is a very slow burn and I wish they would have balanced it with a faster burn couple kind of like they did in Business Proposal.

KANJI667

Yeah, I would agree with you. And I also don't care about this director guy at all. He comes out of nowhere and is such a boring character. Really hope I don't see much more of him in the future episodes. Do you like the director guy?

Local-Raspberry-5649

I am much more annoyed with his addition upon rewatching than the first time around. I admit that I skip a lot of his scenes when rewatching. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MissSimpleton

SAME. The guy is a good actor but that character was not required as a love interest. I gave this drama a 9 only for this reason. Otherwise, I LOVED IT.

Iowegan

Finally watching **Kill Me, Heal Me**. Resisted for a long time cuz >!I am not fond of the multiple personality trope, but OMO, Ji Sung is sexier in each role! (No, I haven’t gotten to the schoolgirl yet.)!<

mzh277

I love Jisung (imma guy) but I cant stand the FL. So sadly I never got past ep. 3

Iowegan

She is pretty goofy. Baby Park Seo Joon is a bonus in this drama too, half the time when he pops up in a scene I’m like ‘wow, I forgot PSJ was in this. Cool.’ I started this because I was depressed and confused by **Connection**, will pick that up once it’s done and I can binge it and maybe keep track of what’s going on more easily.

papichula2

Hi there is a drama called the brave yong soo ju It seems to have many episodes unlike other dramas and I don't see it spoken bout even on this sub Is there a category of dramas that people don't usually talk bout?

sianiam

It's a daily drama - they air 35 minute episodes M-F. There are users who watch them but they don't generally get a lot of discussion. If you talk about it in our weekly What are you watching post tomorrow you might find some users who are watching it too.

papichula2

Thanks. Is it fun to watch or is it like some soap opera type thing Is it like that ha jun drama my life or something. That had fifty episodes.some of it was nice. Most was stretchy

sianiam

I have only attempted to watch one daily drama so probably aren't the right person to ask. I think in general they are more soap opera-ish than weekend dramas (the 50 episode weekend family dramas).

papichula2

Thank u. That's enough fr me to not bother. It's tough to manage the 12/16 episodics too sometimes

myweithisway

Very soap opera-ish with a heavy dose of public service announcement style messaging in them. They tend to have sprawling casts centered around multiple families with lots of tangential storylines that take turns being front and center. They make for great Korean learning practice since dialogue is spoken clearly and repeated. But if you thought weekender family dramas were 'stretchy', daily dramas will redefine 'stretchy' and weekender family dramas will be a tornado in comparison.

Funky_Impact8870

I'm currently watching **The Tale of Nokdu** and it started out fine, but now I'm on episode 12 and I find myself completely at loss in the political scheming plot. It really annoys that I just can't seem to grasp who's plotting with or against whom without having to go back every 10 minutes. The fact that they just randomly (in my pov that is) show flashbacks and juggle with timelines doesn't help at all. I like the romance but it really doesn't weigh up against the political mess getting on my nerves. I think I'll drop it.

spark1118

I just finished episode 9 of Lovely Runner and I am having a hard time pushing through… If they took out >!the brief flashback of another accident that happened when future FL was away and the stabbing!< in previous two episodes, I feel like the drama could of ended there. Unless I’m not looking at the whole picture, I think they revealed some things too quickly and so that’s why I’m struggling?? Even though I’m struggling to push through, I will stick with it to the end!

thesaura73

OMG the AIDS discussion in Thank You. (They say AIDS but I assume FL’s daughter is probably just HIV positive?) Seems too weird and reactionary for 2007 but maybe yet another illustration of small town/island ways overcoming sympathy, science and common sense

Sonda86

Is it it interesting that acclaimed actors such as Tae Yoo or Uhm Tae Goo decided to do a dramas?  Its good for a viewers ofcourse but it is albo very itriguing. Tae Yoo just became a member of Oscar's Academy btw:)
