Leaving it outside would do that. I'm surprised it's not worse. Ideally it should be stored somewhere dry.

arcticsequoia

Thanks. Do you think an unheated shed would be an improvement over the rain? It’s protected from direct rain but still humid as the sides are open. Considering to move it in there

3r0nic

Not necessarily, I leave my bike outside every day (in London) without a cover and I don't get rust like that. Keep the chain lubed and use lube with anti-rust/water displacement properties. I personally use XCP chain lube. I use Muc Off's MO94 on clutch/brake cable, bolts, and other places where surface rust starts to form. Just don't spray it on the disc brakes. You can use disc brake cleaner for those.

arcticsequoia

Thanks. Will check those out. Good to hear that’s working for you. I live by a fjord with salt water, wonder if that might also be a factor even if we don’t get much wind.

deepoctarine

Also a liberal spray of Scottoiler FS365 between rides is a good idea, in dry weather just apply it after the bikes cooled down, wet and dirty riding, hose down the bike first before applying.

TeslaCoilzz

Oh, interesting. Googling that product rn

keistrak

Yeah it doesn’t help…

Bullsonparade284

Anytime you spray the bike off you need to lube the chain.

allislost77

Exactly. Portland Oregon and have been riding bikes for since I moved here. +22 years. Not “normal”. But it’s a KTM so…

tootnine

Just get a cover. You can get cheap ones for like $20 or $30

Only1Fab

Yes, much better, specially for theft

arcticsequoia

That’s not really a concern as no one steals anything here and it’s insured, but think I’ll consider it for the rain

Only1Fab

Really? Where is this place?

arcticsequoia

And yes, in the country side we even have unmanned fruit stands by farms where you can buy fruit by just taking it yourself, putting in cash and taking your change from a plate with all the other cash. No cameras, no people around, no one steals

lumpyholiday

Same same here on beautiful Vancouver Island in Canada

Only1Fab

I would love to live somewhere like that!!

Money_Koala2618

I've Seen similar situation in remote Queensland and new south Wales Australia

arcticsequoia

Norway

Only1Fab

I live in London and bike theft is a huge problem here! Literally every one I know got their bike stolen at least w

_r31gn

Obviously you’re not in the city, but my buddy’s bike got stolen in Bergen a few weeks back. Right from his driveway, his roommate’s bike next to his was untouched. Crazy.

arcticsequoia

You’re right - it definitely happens here too, but luckily where I am most people still don’t even lock their doors. It’s certainly getting worse with immigration though

54moreyears

A cover just shows it’s possibly a valuable bike. How does that help with theft? I always felt that to be an old wives tale.

iamgeekusa

At the very least put a bike cover over it then stick it under the shed. Will make a world of difference. Just be sure not to cover it up until its cooled down a bit after riding.

Grown_Gamer

Just my opinion : That is way too much rust. Oil the chain or at least grease it. For the brakes, its fine. But dont leave the bikes outside if you live in a place with super salty humid air. And if your roads get salted, then wash the bike after every ride. Such is life. FOr the other minor rust, just pain over those areas with a basic black spray. I do that on my bike. I dont like seeing rust. But no, your chain should not demonstrate any rust ever. If it does, it is time to replace. I personally prefer using machine grease. It lasts longer and seams better for truly protecting chains. But some people use chain oil. Anyway, that is my opinion.

YerDaHasTets

Believe it or not bikes are or should (most) be waterproof and can get wet.

LikeABundleOfHay

Yes, but to be left in the weather at all times? I wouldn't do that to any bike I own.

JCurtisUK

I've had my super moto since December. It's been outside since and only has a waterproof cover. Yet it just doesn't rust. The frame has had a bit of surface rust here and there, but the forks are like new and the chain seemingly just doesn't give AF. I do lube it a lot, though. Also, I live right by the sea.

VantageSP

That's normal most motorcycles live their life outdoors without any covers. They are built to last.

krawczyk94

Well, keeping it outside, not protected by any cover will not help any bike. Unfortunetaly this is exactly what happened to my duke 125, it is only 3.5years old and I've already had to swap starter motor and rear brake caliper due to rain and snow.

arcticsequoia

That’s a shame - you’re making me reconsider as I do actually have a shed I could use. It’s not really that practical but might be worth the hassle if it’s already getting this bad after only a few weeks

Xrayruester

I kept my Husky in a shed for 4ish years. Definitely not as good as a sealed garage, but it definitely helps with the rust. Mine after 4 years didn't have half what you're seeing.

arcticsequoia

Thanks, that’s reassuring to hear. I ordered a ramp so I can get it in there, will free up some space and give it a go.

Rework_Aramusha

Huskies are getting rusty?

phibbsy47

Use the shed for sure. It will prevent water damage, UV damage, protect it from dew and frost, etc. I'm restoring an 80s Honda, and it got more rust from 2 days of rain than it did in over 40 years of ownership stored in a shed. I had to make room in my garage for it when I first got it, and was amazed how much it rusted in that short amount of time. You can store a bike outside with a cover if you take extra precautions, but a roof over it makes a big difference.

krawczyk94

If you got a place to put a shed, do it. Do not make my mistake if you want your bike in good condition.

juxtoppose

Genuinely you shouldn’t see rust because it should be coated in chain lubricant, more than you need is better, as long as you don’t mind washing off the excess on the paintwork with kerosene now and again. You can lose a couple of horsepower through a badly maintained chain, ask your wife, everything works better with a bit of lube.

stupidboyy96

Keep it lubed to prevent

arcticsequoia

Thanks I’ll put some on tomorrow

incrediblynormalpers

and clean and lube your chain, don't let your chain go dry) get some ACF-50 and spray it / rub it on all the parts that might rust, jenolite can help remove rust (don't use on chain) GET a COVER and don't cover your bike when it's hot (condensation)

zookastos

This. It's needs greasing on chain. Automobiles are supposed to be kept and operated outside. Don't need no air conditioning for it.

Shibizsjah

No. Some yes, but rust on chain is to much. You need to lube up that chain, look to dry.

arcticsequoia

Cheers, I thought so too - I’ll do a full lube session thanks

Shibizsjah

Hvor kjøpte du sykkelen fra, kjøpte du helt ny?

arcticsequoia

Ja, CPB Motor is Skien

Shibizsjah

Min 2017 har null rust, men den ble også produsert i EU og ikke Kina. Men vil absolutt reklamert på dette til CPB, de er veldig imøtekommende.

arcticsequoia

Takk for tipset! Bor er stykk unna men er verdt å prøve, skal vurdere å ta en tur innom. Men det gir mening, kina utgave er trolig ikke like solid.

Shibizsjah

Send en epost med bilder ;-)

arcticsequoia

God ide:) takk!

That-Web7343

Ridden hard, put away wet. Man, this bike ain't gonna last as long as the payments on it 🤣🤣🤣🙉

thehavok123

Mine is a 2021 with 10k on it and no rust , make sure you cover it when it rains and i bough that chain wax , it protect and lube the chain ,works pretty good

arcticsequoia

Cheers. Do you also leave yours outside full time? What kind of chain wax are you using?

thehavok123

Yes outside , maxima chain wax work pretty good and its not going all over the wheel like a normal lube but do it at least once a week and clean the chain with a chain cleaner or gas first

happybanana2

Put some lube now and then. It prevent chain from rusting. Also ACF50 like chainlube, is good for preventing rust the chain. Wd40 is good for washing your chain.

Backdoor_Visit_747

https://preview.redd.it/9emr5mj8bm5d1.jpeg?width=1619&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b9a895f27f7ea92efc857ee76cc7479efc4d733 This is 2k uk miles on a 9 month old 790 Duke. I'm having a ding dong with the dealer as "ktm don't cover rust under warranty " the chain is as bad. But I found ep90 diff oil as lube works a treat

arcticsequoia

Wow that’s a lot of rust for 9 months! I’m guessing you also park outside full time? Shame to see I really thought the bikes would be made out of more corrosion resistant alloys but if it rusts in weeks I’m guessing it’s pretty cheap stuff

Backdoor_Visit_747

Under cover at night but in the compound at work in the daytime. I asked the dealer "if they're made with cheap Chinese metal". My gsxr1000 is 20 years old and is out in the daylight and under cover at night, no rust to be seen anywhere and both are used in all weather

Av1fKrz9JI

That abs ring is defective. It’s massively corroded. They abs ring is anodised, the very worst case scenario you would expect maybe a few specs of rust. Yours looks like it’s been sat at the bottom of a lake for nine months. Zero signs of rust on the rotor or rotor bobbins. Rust on rotor bobbins normally a tell rain a bike has been left and abused, yours look clean apart from road grime which reaffirms your abs ring has manufacturing issues with the anodising/coating.

Backdoor_Visit_747

This is the argument I'm having with the dealer

Backdoor_Visit_747

This is the argument I'm having with the dealer

ohnoohno69

Looks like it's been badly powder coated, the coating has failed and it's rusted badly. You could take it off, get it blasted and possibly ceracote it for better results. May be cheaper just to get a new one and give it an extra coat before installing.

Push_My_Owl

Hey OP look into using acf50 if you store it outside. Wash your bike. Give it a good coating in acf50 on all the metal parts. Relube your chain. It'll keep the rust at bay so well! If you live by the sea, do it a little more often but it lasts a good few months as protection. Also buy a cover if you gotta leave it outside and don't have a garage or shed etc. Also make sure your lube is suitable to your weather. Some can be better with rain.

Beginning-Put1446

Just put some oil on that bone dry chain and you will be right. Hope you get sorted

Realistic-Catch8

Man, you have to lubricate the chain

0Ethan

Had my Duke125 in a Scotland winter in 2019; anything to stop it getting directly rained on would help including your open shed. Since you are in Norway and there is salt on the roads, give it a quick rinse with a cold water hose pipe when you get home from riding anywhere wet. Buy a can of ACF50, give your bike a really good wash and dry it fully and then coat any and all exposed metal minus your brake discs in a nice layer. Brake discs will rust anyway, this happens even in the desert where I currently live, just drive it often and the braking surface will stay clean. Rinse after every wet drive, leave under shed. I am not a fan of waterproof covers as they trap moisture underneath and arguably make rusting worse…

NotoriousREV

ACF-50 it and get a cover if it’s going to live outside.

arcticsequoia

Thanks! Didn’t know about ACF 50 will order some now. Also have an unheated shed, still humid but probably better than rain think I might free up some space and store it in there

NotoriousREV

Would definitely be better. Just make sure not to get ACF on your brakes, tyres, seat or grips.

arcticsequoia

Thanks for the tip. Have ordered some now

HeartBeatRepeatYT

Anything will rust when you neglect it, a week already and you haven’t lubed it yet… you got that much money but not $10 for a bottle of lube?

arcticsequoia

I actually do have lube on hand, but thought I heard somewhere that it was needed rather infrequently. How often do you lube your chain? I’m realizing I am still quite a noob at this

HeartBeatRepeatYT

I’m no professional but I did ride for years, years ago. I’d say every wash and every ride needs time. Do not ever ride your bike and not wash it! And I mean ever it’s poor etiquette When you wash you dry protect and lube :) bike will perform much nicer Small little rides to show friends or test bike is no worries but actually riding you need to properly maintain the key moving components. Letting them rust a bit the first few times is a good way to tell what needs lube and in time you will remeber without thinking about it. I’d suggest looking up YouTube videos on just maintaining and washing bikes and finds a technique you like out of a bunch of them

arcticsequoia

Thanks for this - will get a stand for it and definitely do it more often then :)

HeartBeatRepeatYT

Yes it’s much much easier on a stand to wash, I actually seen this dude who I watch for 3d printing and Mx content on YouTube he recomended leaning the bikes on bothe sides on the ground and power washing and soaping up under the bikes how dirt gets on. That was a great idea to me I wouldn’t have done so figured I’d share as well I’ll be trying it when I save up enough to comfortably get a bike been months now only got 2k tho

arcticsequoia

That sounds like an interesting technique. Glad to hear you’re saving up hope you can get yourself a bike again soon🤞

HeartBeatRepeatYT

Yea congrats on the new bike I can only imagine buying a bike or car new one day right now. Finally learning to be responsible with money and not give in to addictions and buying things I don’t need. Told myself I need to save double for the bike I want but it will be hard, more than I’ve ever spent on a vehicle. And the newer ktm 125sx are like 4-5k for a nice one seems like Safe riding buddy

Otherwise_Mud1825

You need to keep it out of the rain, a drafty shed is ideal it helps dry the bike when it's wet and helps stop moisture from settling. You also need to lube your chain regardless of weather.

arcticsequoia

Thanks. I’ll see if I can free up some space and move it in the shed. How often do you lube yours?

Otherwise_Mud1825

>How often do you lube yours? Depends on what lube you use, how much you ride and when, winter and commuting then every week, just keep it topped up, you don't have to go mad. I used any engine/gear oil in the garage, its a bit messy but it works. When it was parked up I left a plank of wood under the chain to catch any drips and stop them spreading. For the bikes I only used in summer a dedicated dry (ish) chain lube but I can't remember which ones, there all very much the same,I just bought what was on offer, 😁.

YerDaHasTets

Are you putting a cover over it when it's wet?

arcticsequoia

No, no cover, been just leaving it out parked in the rain as is

YerDaHasTets

Well that sucks, KTM quality has been getting worse. The paint on the engine of my 890 Duke R is flaking and KTM warranty dept told me to go away and I wasn't washing and looking after the bike properly.

2zoio

Any bike will get rust if left outside without some care. The fact that chain is getting signs of rust means you are not paying attention- not that it is KTM fault. Get a cover and lube/clean your chain. I also just spray wd40 on things like gas cap and chain adjusting bolts. Just to avoid water settleing there and making them stuck

Ineeboopiks

chains not lubed and properly maintained. If you leave bike out side yes they rust.

FastBinns

Rust inhibitor spray. There is so many brands to choose from. Just don't get it on your brakes.

arcticsequoia

Thanks. I ordered some ACF-50. Do you know if it can be used on the chain and gears too or is it best to just do lube on them?

noktis666

Chain wax after wash and after your chain is driven warn/hot.

YOMEGAFAX

Wax and lube. Maybe with a little bit of fluid film and she’ll be good.

Sir_Beretta

Grease // antirust where needed. Maybe buy a cover to slap on it overnight

kegboygsr23

Yes

atincozkan

one day in a rainy day okey.after like 2 or more days chain gets rust just like that.you need to cover with a sheet.you can brush away the rust because its just basic rust that cleans off easily. also if you ride in rain, you need to lube again

Scratch_Puzzleheaded

Use a leaf blower after you wash it and stop taking close-up, HD pics of your bike.

FabbiLp

The brakes will get rusty because they're covered in steel powder, but they kind of clean themselves with use. You really want to keep rust away from welding points in the swingarm and frame, front suspensions, and chain. My previous bike's chain rusted, and I had to replace it (I live near the sea). I suggest a bike cover, good chain grease and lots of CRC on any rust you see anywhere else(not on the brakes)

MrDuder2

my lever adjustment twisties rusted but nothing else

Mielie135

It's made in India bud... Don't leave it outside in the weather.

PrincessBlue3

I’ve been recommended acf50 a lot! It seems to have worked well so far! Small bits of rust are definitely expected! It’s all surface and it’s really not too much to worry about, and keeping it outside is just gonna cause small bits of surface rust! Also they are not the best built bikes in the world so it’s certainly going to be worse than more premium brands! It doesn’t look out of the ordinary tho

Jioqls

Are you living near the cost. Maybe that could explain the rust

arcticsequoia

Yes, I am, I live by the beach. Don’t get much wind but maybe there is still more salt in the air than usual

badboybilly42582

Bingo. Bike is probably getting exposed to salty air.

JLMBO1

Your near the ocean with salt water. Everything rusts in that sea salt air. I would spray that bike down with WD 40. And lube the chain and cables. Keeping it under a good cover instead of an open shed will help. Ideal place would be inside out of that sea salt air.

Gold-Witness-831

What is that thing?

BaconJunkie1

\[face palm\]

Terrible-Yak-369

You should be oiling your chain

TapNo884

Doesn't look right man. I leave my bike outside from spring to autumn, nothig like this ever happened

awaytogetsun

Hot and rainy without any sort of effort to clean and protect? Normal for budget hardware Idk your market but stuff like S100 is good for wiping down and protecting hardware. Brake pads and rotors you're stuck with it. Chain you need to clean and reduce after it gets rained on or wet in general

mmafightpicks01

You need to buy a bike cover at a minimum.

StevieD504

You can buy a 20 dollar cover off amazon. Small bike covers work

Both-Offer-5822

Clean & Lube your chain weekly. Cover the bike. Problem solved.

Both-Offer-5822

Clean with Dupont Chain & Sprocket Degreaser and lube/protect with DuPont Teflon Chain-Saver Lubricant. Weekly if not every few days- depending on the distance you ride and the weather.

chrisromb1

Throw it out get a new one

RulerOfDaNorf

Looks like it’s been rained on

DB-Tops

Lube your chain. Buy a cheap motorcycle cover for when you're parked because... why not?

DarkStranger69

Clean and lube your chain. There rust is simply from the tiny particles from chain wear, not the chain rusting. It’s important to regularly clean and lube, to ensure the chain has a long life. Ride safe

ohnoohno69

The chains gonna get rust if it's not coated in lube. Once every few weeks will sort that. The lever adjuster shouldn't rust, shite plating has caused that. ACF50 coating it can help. DO NOT PUT LUBE OR ACF50 NEAR YOUR BRAKES. The pads may get a bit of rust. The only thing that should go near your pads is brake cleaner. I'd just leave them, brake pins and pads are consumable parts, they'll get replaced after a while.

Untertaber

Definetly get a good bike cover!! Its the least you can do, it might still catch some moisture but a lot less than if you leave it out like this.

JCurtisUK

I've had my super moto since December. It's been outside since and only has a waterproof cover. Yet it just doesn't rust. The frame has had a bit of surface rust here and there, but the forks are like new and the chain seemingly just doesn't give AF. I do lube it a lot, though.

[deleted]

My bike is outside year round with or without a cover and I have never had my chain look like that. In fact I’m lubing it up right now and just killing time while the penetrate does its thing. When I first got it and I lubed it up a few times I had some rusty spots and experimented and found out that it was because I wasn’t getting enough lube on all sides of the chain and that it was mostly surface rust which disappeared after a good lubing session. So I lube in a few spots now, on top as it goes into sprockets in that 6-8 inch gap and on the bottom side of the chain guard across the top of the chain. Then I spin it until I get a section of dry chain at the top and I spray it again and when a decent section along the bottom is available I spray that too. I also spray around the rear sprockets teeth as well. Check it out - 2,000+ miles in a month or so and every day out in the elements with no cover. I’ve been using the maxima lube pack with the multi purpose penetrate after cleaning and before lubing. I got a cover now just last week but I am switching lubes to motorex waterproof racing lube because our summer is a rainy season and the forecast is always wrong.

[deleted]

https://ibb.co/j4W7tss https://ibb.co/GChzxhj

[deleted]

Are you re lubing every 300-600 miles? You don’t have to clean it every time until it gets dirty but you should probably lube more often if your not already. Goodluck.

Ok_Bumblebee2675

Plenty of flip over bike shelters. Worked great for me in the past.

elswhere

You can mitigate it a lot by frequently treating your bike. Wash your bike weekly and treat with a spray on quick wax on the plastics, painted, chrome bits. Hit black plastic, rubber, and exposed metal parts with silicone protectant. Properly lubricate your chain, cable ends, levers etc. You may need multiple specialty lubricants and trial and error. The goal is to have a shiny, thin coat of protectant on all the bike all the time without it collecting more dirt or feeling greasy. Good products should last you a month if you get lazy but its easier to keep it up than clean it up. have fun.

elswhere

don't wax or treat seats, grips, pegs, or tires ever. duh

canadianmohawk1

it is if you get the chain wet and then don't clean and lube it.

RolePlayingJames

I leave mine out as I dont have anywhere to store it, I keep it covered and after cleaning I wipe down the body with ACF50 spray. I also use wd40 chain wax on my chain as there are often large puddles where I live.

Independent_Law1834

Have you ever heard of chain lube? It’s rusting because it’s dry. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Evening_Mix599

I live by the ocean and spray my bikes with corrosion inhibiter on anything that might possibly rust, it works great.

Upper_Television3352

A lil rubbing compound on that lever adjuster and an old toothbrush should clean that up. Put a lil wax on it regularly to keep it from recurring.

Hadleyagain

Covering (if dry) or storing in a garage / shed will help. You also would benefit from a coating of acf50. Or any product that makes a fine oil layer stops corrosion.

AcrobaticEstate3626

A properly lubricated chain will never rust.

RebelSaii

Lube it.

tnags40

These are o-ring chains. They don't need a lot or much of any lube. A little surface rust isn't going to hurt the chain. I use Blaster Chain & Cable to protect, but this isn't a big deal.

Professional_Ad_500

Did you park it in the ocean?

Unhindged_Potatoe

Considering your situation I’d say it’s pretty normal. Chains pick up rust very easily. I ride an adventure bike and even a puddle will leave my chain rusty the next day. Maybe make a small shed or get a cover for your bike. Also, I think every rider needs to work on keeping up with maintenance from time to time. I know I need to get better with it.

General_Git

I spray mine with Acf50 once or twice a week, using an oil mister so a nice film gets over everything. Looks messy but when you clean the bike, all the shit comes off easy and looks nice and no rust.

ARandomHavel

You're surprised to see rust forming on metal that you've left in the rain for weeks?

woden_allfather

Once you've cleaned the rust off get acf50 and treat the bike all over . Am acroos the water on the east coast of Scotland and get the same thing

Due-Organization7707

Yeah no always lube your chain after a was h or wet ride…even if plan on cleaning later if you leave it wet it will rust

Rolling_Stone_Siam

Parked out in the rain, yes I would say normal. Get a bike cover for it and do some wd40 to repel water

Fast_Paint_5156

DO NOT use wd 40. It's a solvent and will dry up grease in bearings or oil.

krawczyk94

from what other people say ACF-50 is the answer not WD40
