Eh - first song that came to mind was Hookup Scene, which I don’t care for but the chord progression (pretty common) works for Deeper Well. But yes it is pretty similar to Home but timing and melody make just enough of a difference that’s it’s not a carbon copy

aragogogara

definitely not identical, just familiar... because when the Phillip Phillips song came out, they played the FUCK out of it in America. It's stamped into my brain against my will.

e-luddite

yes! thank you, I knew it was something (agreed, no shade and the comparison is promising)

aragogogara

This is no shade and I’m not saying Kacey stole this element of their song. No art is original and people don’t own chord progressions. These are two very different songs, the chords go in a different direction and it's not identical. However... anything I did today... I kept repeating that chord progression and tried to figure out why it's already stamped into my brain. I've never intentionally listened to the band/man? Phillip Phillips before but whenever this song came out, they played the FUCK out of it so it was forced upon my brain. I assumed it was probably Mumford and Sons or something but apparently it's this guy. While I was brushing my teeth (bum bum bum bum bum), making my smoothie (bum bum bum bum bum), sat down on the toilet (bum bum bum bum bum... what the fuck is it!??!) I finally realized when the lyrics came to me and had to google who sang the song. Just something I noticed in case that was an ear worm for anyone else. It's mainly because that song was/is played all the time. It's not identical, just an observation.

mystonedalt

It's so much the same thing like you know crazy wow!

I thought it sounded like an Elliott Smith guitar line but when you’re plucking along on a guitar and using the same chords and walking bass notes you’re bound to have some overlap with others. I found that it sounded more like hookup scene

catsnotpeople

Honestly some of the bass reminded me of walk on the wild side from Lou reed but only heard it when I was listening on my Bose speaker 🤣

freecouponsforlife

Yeah I was gonna say I heard tribe called quest’s can I kick it

UsedCellist1

Another tribe, lou and kacey fan?? Hi!! I love the wild side bass- it's so apparent that I feel like it's gotta be a nod to recording in NYC. She said in the interview the place really influenced the album, so those greenwich village folk/americana/rock/punk homages might be sprinkled throughout (which has me stoked)

freecouponsforlife

Major! (We’re all best friends now)

chrisbrownbeard

100000% came here for this

shorebirds

This is what I hear.

_2sunshine2_

deeper well also reminds me of the interlude and melodies on john mayer’s The Search for Everything

NastyCherryStan

omg i was wondering why it seemed familiar

thecashmasta

Good catch. It should be noted that a lot of popular music uses ‘cliche’ melodies like this. Could easily find hundreds if you took the time to look!

Hot-Personality-3683

Parts of the song strongly reminded me of Grow As We Go, by Ben Platt, as well

aragogogara

That song is so beautiful. Have you checked out the singer Ben Abraham? He's one of the writers on that song and has his own music career. He's so talented.

DataIndependent9394

OMG THANK YOU. I kept thinking, “this sounds familiar!” But couldn’t figure it out. This is it exactly.

LisontheInternet

YES! I posted this on the first impressions thread, too! As soon as listened this song got stuck in my head (also no shade, thought it was kind of funny)

savgeezy

This was the first song that came to my mind too when I listened lol DW also reminded me a lot of the song hero by family of the year. It was in the movie boyhood and it takes place in Texas so I loved that DW reminded me of it

GospozhaZ

Thank you! I have been trying to figure out what it was for days and I couldn’t place it!

Due_Complaint886

I love Kacey but this song has car commercial vibes

Jom53181

I searched to find out if anyone else heard it!

Reims88

"just breathe" by Eddie vedder 1000% I couldn't place why it was so familiar but I finally got it!

DocumentIntrepid9200

This is crazy because when I heard “Cardinal” the verses sounded like the melody from Nelly furtado’s “say it right” and I thought it was intentional and the verses on “too good to be true” sound familiar somehow too…

PeterGrrr

It’s clearly Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”

Effective-Macaroon63

Definitely a tribute to Lou Reed.

UmbrellaClosed

This just adds to the underwhelming feeling

Asyouwish578

It reminded me a little of the end of the Ted Lasso theme song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHoCM31\_jbM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHoCM31_jbM) Still love it of course

No_Program_6902

I actually heard Lou reed’s take a walk on the wild side underneath
