DAMN. has no misses for me

lovellet

I was about to ask what ‘misses’ they were talking about.

Moottorisorsa

God and love

ebk6

idk it just makes me think of the genius that is kendrick lamar, he was on this pro god, pro Israelite thing before kanye. different people, different stories, same conclusion. how are they both coming to the same answer and so are some of the most powerful countries and people in the world, ie Epstein, gates, Clinton. nd in the conspiracies lie more conspiracy.

peachlvrr

what does pro god even mean? kanye has been 'pro god', aka christian, his entire life..

BendoverDikschit

Pro-god, whatever that means, and Christian are two very different things. Kanye might have said he was Christian his whole life but he also thought he was god himself and a bunch of other wacky stuff. Aside from Jesus Walks there really wasn’t much else to distinguish him as a Christian based on his music as far as I can recall, without listening to his entire discography right now. It’s undeniable, however, that Life of Pablo marked a significant shift in Kanye’s music. Jesus is King is basically gospel music. I’ve been telling my Christian friend who’s the A/V guy at his church that he should consider playing Kanye’s new album, no remixing or editing needed at all, it just works in that setting, whether you like it or not. I don’t understand how people can be so dense as to compare CLB to Donda and still say that CLB is better. Hello, Earth to the space cadets here, the fact that anyone is even comparing these albums means Donda is better.

ebk6

you askin the wrong person, im just tryna start a thought process. Make your own assumptions then, tell me. satanism, its an ongoing theme in both mainstream hip hop and in conspiracy politics weird? just tryna make a connection. K.dot did it first, top 3 artist in the world, when he dropped damn, which has a lot of references to religion.

BendoverDikschit

Idk why this is getting downvotes. Hip-hop most certainly flirts with satanism. [A recent example that had a lot of evangelicals loosing their shit.](https://youtu.be/6swmTBVI83k)

Montez_

There is no argument. Kanye made religious influenced rap since his debut. Before Kendrick even joined Top Dawg.

ConorAbueid

Prolly God

[deleted]

Yah and god for me

OldHeads_OddHaters

I like GOD.

Xymtrollio

Yah top 3 on the album

_Broatmeal_

“Raaadars is buzzin’” might be the best hook on the album. Can’t believe ppl say it’s a miss

DoinitDDifferent

Fr tho

LilSamiBoii

i dont like the whole message behind yah but its a pretty good vibey song

[deleted]

The yah yah yah yah chorus is really bad I'm sorry

Retnuhswag

YA YAAH

nirvana13a

Bet

beennasty

Same.

DraftFar6164

Why tf does the Kendrick sub act like other people here don’t like his music

iwantyourvaginaplz

You're rocking that earl sweatshirt type pfp

fukyduky

It’s either “oh my god why is this song so underrated???????” Or “guys this album is actually a masterpiece (as if nobody knew this already)”, people have nothing to do with their time apparently

nirvana13a

The sub is super low on DAMN. imo, OP is just noticing that I think. The “this isn’t a radio hit so I’ve discovered an underrated gem” post is tired for sure though

gnutestoam

This sub is 'super low on damn' only because its his most recent album and was slightly 'underwhelming' in that most people prefer GKMC and TPAB. Because its the closest thing to a 'disappointment' in kendricks career of course its gonna be the focus of any negative discussion on here. Plus its the internet so people love to give/pretend other people are giving extreme opinions (including you saying that this sub is 'super low' on damn when it really isn't cuz noone ever even says its a bad album)

nirvana13a

Go through the comments here and you’ll read that it’s a light 7 and has some bangers but isn’t great overall. It’s regularly called lower than earlier works of his that aren’t anywhere near it’s tier, not just gkmc and TPAB that we could reasonably debate the merits of. That’s super low in my book.

No-Maintenance34

Damn is a timeless album, nobody recognized his mixtape HNIC tho💯💯💯💯💯

AnAverageFlight

I think everybody agrees with this.

justleavemebeaight

I hope so. Appreciate your feedback brothur

gregisverycool420

Damn was an amazing album brothur Kendrick pop off on the occasion brothur Hope new flows comin any day now brothur

deformedfool

Amazing brothur

alick52

Stay patient brothur

Obamascocklol

Dude said light to medium like he was fantano lul

justleavemebeaight

Fantano didn’t originate reviews bro

Obamascocklol

Yeah he did

justleavemebeaight

Fault in my response, you’re right

jpie999

I love the album, but GKMC and TPAB are simply better projects. I think people overlook it because of those two albums, but there’s definitely some bangers on the record

nirvana13a

Hard disagree, I get that this opinion is popular on the sub, but DAMN. is a master piece of an album. Not just some bangers on a lessor album. This attitude being common is what OP is responding to I feel and I cannot co-sign. Pulitzer Kenny gets my vote

[deleted]

Agreed

beennasty

Well put.

FeelinJipper

People just watch fantano and then internalize his opinion as their own.

hebsbbejakbdjw

I've watched like 3 reviews all in the last week I don't have anything bad to say against DAME it just wasn't memorable to me. I even prefer untitled to it

[deleted]

OP listen to the disect podcast about Damn

justleavemebeaight

Will do, thanks!

[deleted]

Let me know if it changes your mind, it did with me and now I personally think its his top work

LibertyReignsCx

Damn was actually the first album I ever listened to, like literally ever.

justleavemebeaight

Damn jeez bro. Starting off strong. It was the first Kendrick one for me

LibertyReignsCx

Yeah I really liked wutang at the time, and was into mainstream hip hop, would only listen to their most popular stuff, than one time my stoner cousin was like dude, you never listened to an album before? (I was like 15 probably, he was 30) and I was like nah man, and he told me that I have to listen to damn. Kept going on jogs too it and enjoyed it a lot, with every listen it got better and I fell in love, and then I decided to listen to gkmc…

justleavemebeaight

Have a friend who got into music this summer, only listened to popular songs. I put him on albums. Still judges artists off their popular songs but I’m glad I got him out of the top 5 song listener phase

LibertyReignsCx

Damn was the first time I realized that music can truly be something amazing.

justleavemebeaight

Happy for you bro!

LibertyReignsCx

Than I started smoking, listened to madvilliany (prob my fave of all time) and haven’t looked back since music wise.

justleavemebeaight

The smoking part isn’t so dope, but I love DOOM with all my heart. Rip a legend, listened to almost all his stuff

LibertyReignsCx

Nah man I don’t smoke anymore! I’m 19 now and haven’t touched in a minute, it really helped me open my mind to music tho I have to admit that bro.

justleavemebeaight

Yooo that’s awesome dude, I’m proud of you! That’s really awesome, I can imagine it opened you to music. That’s really awesome dude

AutonomousRhinoceros

You don’t actually think DAMN. is one of his lowest projects do you?

justleavemebeaight

No, I was just scared of being flamed LMAO

RUWavy

Damn. is an AMAZING album. One of the best of all time. Kendrick’s albums are like wine - depending on your mood is what determines the best one at any given time.

bambam_39

Damn> gkmc and section 80, fight me

justleavemebeaight

Bold take sir. Understandable. Don’t agree but damn is good af

nirvana13a

Add TPAB, UU, and OD to the other side of that and I’ll fight for damn with you

bambam_39

I’ll definitely put it over OD but to put it over TPAB and UU is pushing it for me

nirvana13a

Tpab being his other good tier masterwork in my book, can’t blame you for being hesitant on that one. DAMN. edges it out for me, but I think there’s arguments to be made. UU is a project I also love. But it’s not an album in the same way to me. It’s great songs presented together but there’s not a sense of cohesion or story telling and to the extent that there theme it’s just overflowing from TPAB, great project, not on the list for best album though.

Xilencious

Damn is a sleeper 10/10. All it needs is time. Some of us already know it’s 10/10 hence the Pulitzer.

_IratePirate_

DAMN. Is my favorite Kendrick album. I've listened to all of them numerous times. GKMC comes close, but DAMN. is the best imo.

AdumSundler

It's not my favourite but I still like DAMM. Definitely don't dislike it at all.

beennasty

It’s my favorite album of his. It has some heavy messages in it. Anyone who thinks it’s a weaker project of his is tripping. I think this was his first step into what he’s speaking on with becoming more of a storyteller. Fuckin went into a spiral of dissecting that whole album when I first heard it. I had to put it on the shelf for a minute. It’s got major power.

No-Maintenance34

Element is a Gemini Drake diss. All air, he’s been said he wants ALL the smoke with this tourist

red_riding_hoodrat

why did this remind me of ZAMN! SHE'S 12

justleavemebeaight

ZAMN 😍

DrGonzoJD

Just heard it for the first time a few days ago and fucking loved it

upvotegoblin

Extreme popularity makes some people not like something. Personally it’s my favorite album of his. People have opinions lol

T2Runner

On the contrary, it's my favorite album by him. I understand TPAB in terms of everything considered but DAMN I can basically listen to on repeat, followed by GKMC. TPAB I have to listen to once then come back to it again a month or two later. It's a heavy listen.

[deleted]

It's definitely smokin on the top 5

Kenmoops

I like it a lot, Section 80 and TPAB still my favs

HipHopUnrapped47

Damn is my favorite album of his and I love them all

Hiightop

i don't dislike it, i just don't think it's that special either. the tracklist is just ok for the most part with a few major standouts and two major duds, the whole concept for the album being reversible doesn't really intrigue me, the message of the overall album presented in fear is ridiculous and deadass lowered my feelings of the album considerably and other than that i just don't enjoy listening to it all the way through. i don't have a score for it because it fluctuates all the time for me because the album is just so inconsistent. dont necessarily think its bad but ion really think it's great either, i think its just pretty good🤷

nirvana13a

I’d like to hear some more on about what you think about FEAR.

Hiightop

i may be misinterpreting but i always thought the voice mail at the end of FEAR was basically saying "the reason why there is suffering is because we are sinful" and this is my personal least favourite bible teaching as it dismisses the unfairness of suffering. saying all suffering is a consequence of sin is in my opinion short sighted and borderline ignorant as it ignores that not all people suffer according to what they have done. What about slaves, victims of the holocaust and indigenous tribes wiped out ? was that all due to sin ? it just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth that this is the main answer for all the questions raised throughout the album. i think that DUCKWORTH has a better message in terms of "good deeds can have incredible consequences" but to me that song is more of a closer rather than the climax with the main impact and doesn't really make up for FEAR's ending :/

nirvana13a

I think the reason that Kendrick puts those words in cousin Carls mouth rather than say them is because it’s not what he believes. It’s the sort of noise and worry that cause him to reflect on the fears in his life. That’s why the bulk of the song happens in the middle of voicemail, like we hear where kdots thoughts take him when he gets this sort of message. DUCKWORTH doesn’t only speak to the good deeds that lead to good, it’s speaks to how little control a person has over the situation they find themselves in. Other peoples actions could’ve changed the outcome for a young Kendrick. Dead gangster rather than rap god, and it’s not his doing. That’s part of the fear he’s picking up on there too. You’re arguing against cousin Carl and I think Kendrick isn’t co-signing, and pushing back in his own way. He’s talking about fears on this earth, that god is punishing us is another one.

T_Boogie

I can see what you mean in Carl’s statement coming off as absolute, if that’s what was leaving the sour taste. Perhaps not just the sufferer’s actions, but the slaveholder is sinful, the nazi trooper pulling the trigger is sinful. We, being everyone. Some, unfortunately, suffer due to the sinful actions of another and not their own. Just as when Anthony chose not to kill Ducky because he would hook him up when he came in for chicken, that flourished into a beneficial result for the both of them through Kendrick. I do also agree, LOVE. is boo boo.

swimfast21

I’m just curious which ones you think are the major duds

Hiightop

Duds: LOVE, GOD Standouts: FEEL, LUST, XXX, DUCKWORTH

swimfast21

Okay thanks man. I’m not going to lie damn is my favourite Kendrick album but I could completely understand why someone would call those low points.

[deleted]

No. DAMN. is one of Kendricks weaker projects and it’s still a rap classic

nirvana13a

DAMN. is his best. Edges out TPAB, his other god tier effort. Calling it anything short of a masterpiece is disrespect in my book. Pulitzer Kenny til Oklama tops it

justleavemebeaight

Damn wouldn’t be his best for me, but honestly higher than I said. I was scared Id get flamed HAHA

nirvana13a

Hipsters hate damn for its success and pop influence. Fantanos dick riders can’t form their own opinion. And plenty of the dim folks can’t follow the plot as it’s less direct story telling than the other 2. But there’s a reason it’s the only non classical, non jazz album to get a Pulitzer and is a platinum hit. It’s true genius. Kung Fu Kenny is a prophet

fukyduky

Yea it’s not like people have their own opinions, right? Get off your high horse

nirvana13a

Or course people can have opinions my man. I’m stating mine while addressing OPs concerns that people on the sub hate DAMN. with some hyperbole. I’ve got roughly 3 sentences to make a point people might actually take the time for so I’m not taking the time to spell out all that in my last statement. Its a rap sub, I thought people would appreciate some playing boasting and roasting brother.

junonguy

Agree it’s his best

jubbaj

Damn is definitely not a 9, too many misses for that. Damn is still a fine project overall though, like a 7/10 with 5 being average

Bergerboy14

I dislike it. Sonically its one if his weakest projects. For example, YAH, LOYALTY, PRIDE, LUST, and LOVE are just so uninteresting and bland. His vocal performance is actually terrible on a few tracks, like GOD, LOVE, and LOYALTY. And many other times its just boring or even repetitive. I think this album has so many ideas in it that some are left behind and only looked at in a shallow manner, like HUMBLE, PRIDE, XXX, or GOD. Its not all bad, there are definitely highlights like DUCKWORTH, the first 3 minutes of XXX, and DNA. But its so inconsistent that I hardly ever go back to it.

nirvana13a

I can’t read PRIDE. being called uninteresting without pushing back. And XXX. shallow? You know we’re talking about Pulitzer Kenny right?

fukyduky

Nobody dislikes it cause it’s a wonderful project, it’s just below TPAB and GKMC, that is all

nirvana13a

I’m seeing 7s, “duds” and nothing special being thrown around. That’s not hate but not what you’d expect on his sub if hadn’t been here

Kill4uhKlondike

This album is in my top 5

9yr_old_lake

Damn is great it's just not Kendrick great, one of the reasons why Kendrick is so great is even his worst project is better then most rappers best (and one of the reasons why Kendrick is leagues above Cole DAMN. is better than FHD)

[deleted]

Damn is his best work yet.

wadamsen

No one here dislikes DAMN. ffs

theglowinglady

I personally don't think Damn. is bad, but for being the continuation of two masterpieces, it's very, very low. If Damn. would be the Kendrick's debut, it would be a 10/10 def.

GoldenEwok

Why do we need to keep having this chat, DAMN is his best record with pullitzer to match 😅 no misses as mentioned

Kidfriz

Bro the whole damn album is an untouchable art master piece and the fact that you can listen to the album in reverse and have a different ending is crazy sensational

samuel_cvlt

As Ruff Criminal on yt put it, "The album is painfully average, but it also has Duckworth"

T360diesel

Kendrick has good albums but damn wasn’t as good as his others

iceberg27mm

Personally, I wouldn't give it a 9/10.... I'd give it a 7.5/10. To be honest, it has dope songs like DNA, FEAR, FEEL, DUCKWORTH & ELEMENT but I really don't care for LOVE, YAH & XXX like that. Personally I think it's good but I like GKMC, TPAB & Section.80 more

https-ralph

i love kendrick. DAMN. is a decent 7, at most. a lot of the tracks weren't hitting for me. i only see myself coming back to LOVE., DNA., and DUCKWORTH.

LuggagePorter

I don’t like it

[deleted]

On my 1-6 score, DAMN. is a strong 5. Tpab and gkmc are both 6’s. I do believe DAMN. is MUCH better than Untitled Unmastered (very light 5) and Section 80 (decent 4/6). Overall though there’s never been a Kendrick album I legitimately disliked. They all range from good to incredible.

tenuous-Boot

I agree it’s definitely not his best especially when compared to other projects but i still appreciate it

[deleted]

I don’t dislike it, I just never go back to it Bc of GKMC & TPAB

terraculon

High 8/Low 9 IMO. Just doesn't have as much replay value as GKMC or the emotional wallop of TPAB.

RGiss

His intro and transition into DNA is my favorite first two tracks on any record ever. The rest of the album falls short of GKMC and TPAB but it’s still quite good

TomBradys12Incher

Damn is his only album I almost never play nowadays. Loyalty, Love, and God are tragic songs imo.

XxDARKM4TTERxX

I don’t really like it at all

[deleted]

It's might least liked Kendrick album and i have 4 of his other projects over it

GarAndSho

Damn has one skip and it's

genbeatm8kr3

u

GarAndSho

I meant there's no skips

N-E-B

I think DAMN. is great. I just think it’s his 3rd best album is all.

prof436

It's a good album just his weakest in my opinion

KevinDomino

I like it, but I barely listen to it these days

Sad-Moose-4552

bro let me tell you something when it comes to kendrick he has no bad projects not even good all of them are amazing damn is my second favourite and it comes to personal opinion sam as kanye u can not deside which is the best album

iamawindmill

Tbh the only song I don’t like on DAMN. is GOD. The rest are great

lilcam316

Ofc not, but it definitely wasn’t in my top 3 projects from Kendrick

FeelinJipper

Who the hell dislikes DAMN?

nirvana13a

Read some comments here my guy

FeelinJipper

I’m not your guy

nirvana13a

Sorry you feel that way brother

FeelinJipper

Me too

Josue705

Damn imo only has one miss, love. I dont like the song. All the other songs are greats. Second best kendrick project for me

sebastian23damico

Who exactly are you talking to?

nicomycousin2

DAMN. is incredible. Can go through the whole disc without a skip forwards and backwards. Masterpiece!

duckydude34

It’s the best

[deleted]

Damn is a fantastic album & I'd never say it's just a collection of bangers+filler but for me tpab really is something else. It still frequently blows my mind when i notice new layers after all this time I guess how i'd put it is that TPAB is impossibly intricate in structure as well as lyricism, genuinely genre elevating in a way that Damn isn't, but Damn still operates up at a super high level of art & poetry few rappers other than Kendrick ever get to just my opinion of course though, I don't think it's a good use of time to debate over which kenny album is "better" when we can instead talk about what makes each one fuckin awesome because they all are

MithrandilPlays

It's great, but it's the only Kdot album besides S80 that has a skip on it (LOYALTY. and LOVE.) Still a decent 8/10 for me, and better than what most artists could make.

Hall225

It’s TOP3

[deleted]

Personally hate it. Don't like any of the songs.

imrowdyy

Album is perfect without GOD imo. Imagine how ridiculous a 3 track run from XXX to FEAR to DUCKWORTH would be.

No_Life_Sharron

J Cole’s greatest album Drakes best album

Wonderful_Track_3762

That album has no misses god is prob the worst and Lust and Fear being the best

PeePeePooPooStick

I think it gets that energy because kendrick was really big before DAMN but he wasn’t really big with everyone until then. i wouldn’t say it had a lot of “radio songs” but it definitely had songs you could actually listen to on the radio unlike any of his other albums and i think that made some people like it a little less because it didn’t feel as special

[deleted]

The fact that DAMN. won a Pulitzer is testament to something far more intricate with the work than is understood at it's face value. It is also a completely more abstract record than his previous Gangsta and Jazz works.
