* F1 chooses the majority of the roster by attractiveness for marketing purposes to women.
There's realistically about 100 people at any given time that are good enough to compete, but only 20 roster spots. So they can pick from the very capable 80+ based on how marketable they are, not necessarily how capable of racing they are (because they're all generally good enough).
And realistically... Only about 4 of them are genuinely championship contenders. The rest can be picked by how attractive they are.
And to be fair:
1. You have to be in incredible shape to compete in that sport.
2. Most are generational racers. Their fathers and grandfathers were at least semi famous, so these are multi generations of famous racing men marrying models and actresses.
3. Most of them come from considerable money. You have to in order to begin cart racing at a young age, as well to be able to afford continuing in the sport until you reach the top classes. Rich people also have the advantage of marrying attractive folks, and thus making attractive kids.
(Richard Hamilton and Pierre Gasly are notable exceptions, they grew up rather poor; but the latter still came from generational racers, his dad raced but moved to be a working class mechanic.)

Though when I started to watch F1 I cheered Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, and I found them cute too, not maybe for looks specifically (though I think they are attractive too) but as a whole package (though it was 14 yo me thinking, so Kimi being a rude but funny rebellious type seemed so cool to a timid nerdy socially anxious girl)
