Get a Honda Civic, buy a cheap aftermarket muffler, replace rims with new ones that don't match the cars colour. Get cheap subs off Facebook marketplace & drive through queens NYC blasting dembow or reggaeton
Order the flag with the right blue! The version you posted is the one post-incorporation into the American state, the one favored on the island is sky blue
I would also recommend eating at more Puerto Rican restaurants, going to salsa lessons, etc. if possible go to Puerto Rico and visit. There should also be cultural events near where you live as well. The three keys will be to immersed in the language, the culture, and the people.
Suerte y éxito.
Depending where you are in Canada, there's Latino events you can hit up. We're in TO and literally EVERY Latino club plays like 90% Puerto Rican artists (Ozuna, DY, Aventura, Bad Bunny, La India, Héctor Lavoe, etc.)
There's also Latin festivals in Montreal, like Fuego Fuego, which was also like 90% PR artists. My wife and I hit up these clubs/festivals and meet people from all over Latin America, including PR. And like most have said, go where they hang out like restaurants etc (I just don't know of any PR food spots)
Anyways, embrace your Latino culture, PR has contributed to the music of Latin America in such a huge way.
I currently live 20 mins outside of toronto but i'm moving to east york with my boyfriend in september! thank you so much I didn't know there were many latino events in Toronto, i'll definitely be going to these places soon!
Best way to immerse yourself into the culture is through food. Check out on yt Borilicious, and Daysi Martinez. The first one is new school, the second one is old school.
As a boricua in Montreal, I will say there are not many Puerto Ricans nor Puerto Rican restaurants here. However 90% of the reggaetón I hear around here is from Puerto Rican artists.
Fuego Fuego, a latin music fesitval, just happened where Ivy Queen, Young Miko, and Rauw Alejandro performed.
Learning the language is incredibly important because it allows you to communicate and listen. You’ll be able to build and make relationships and become closer to who you are. Wishing you the best!
In the middle of words start substituting the R-sound for an L, and if a word begins with R or there is a double RR in the middle, substitute rolled R-sound for a harsh English H-sound.
"Hello, my name is Hobelto" instead of Roberto, for example. Now you sound more Puelto Hican.
As an Argentinean who lived in Puerto Rico for 16 years, this couldn’t be more true!
My wife and eldest son are Puertorrican (well, my son is half Argentinean but born in PR).
It definitely looks beautiful. Keep practicing your Spanish and don't be embarrassed to try and have conversations with others. That's the best way to learn!
The most important to me is to learn the *music* and *learn the history*. Music is really a window for a space and time. Eat the food, and maybe learn to cook native dishes. Learn to dance Salsa.
WATCH: Betty La Fea, which is a Columbian telenovela, but absolutely every latino has watch it. Do this and you surely will have a topic to talk with your grandmother. And by learning to cook native foods as well, because as you know Latin America carries a heritage of women cooking for men.
LISTEN: Ruben Blades, Calle 13, Willie Colon. The mainstream songs are: Pedro Navajas, El Gran Varon, Atrevete-Te, Ojos Color Sol, Como Bailan Los Pobres, Adentro. Learn the lyrics and you’ll feel some good latino stuff.
My girlfriend is boricua. She would recommend spending time on the island. Other than that biggest cultural pride is the music so start with that if you havnt already. Next is the food mofongo, trifongo, mamposteao, carne frita. Finally the language, PRican spanish has unique slang and they’re proud of their accent.
that's my nationality not my ethnicity. canadians don't have "culture", unless you're talking about native canadians which I am not. I wasn't even born here
Yes, I heard a lot by US "Mexican" citizens.
I got plenty of relatives like those because I was born in a immigrant family.
I hope you find a way to build an authentic identity outside your fetiche country.
Depending where you live I would start by spending time with Puertoricans. talk with them, eat with them, spend special events with them. Make their culture your culture, bc it is your culture. Listen to the music, the movies, get to know the people. I would definitely go to the island but don’t just go to the tourist areas, talk with the people and go to the small shops. If you spend time with us you will learn spanish.
Reading the island’s history.
Puerto Rico, like any other place, is not made up of a single homogeneous cultural group.
Many social, economic, and cultural factors come into play to one degree or another.
The one thing we all share is the island’s history.
Edit: another thing I think we all share is our love for fun; whether it’s music, food, festivals or back-yard parties, you’ll find everyone joining in the fun.
idk why latinos act like you have to be raised in latin america and speak spanish at the speed of light to be considered a part of the culture. it's so evident in this community and frankly it's actually quite sad, you push away people from trying to understand their heritage better because they didn't have a chance to as a child. do better.
is different your heritage and your culture.
Even my ancestors from America and from Spain aren't my culture.
Your cultura isn't your language or your skin color, is a "unitedstatian" racist idea, is what your live, your friends and family.
Learn about the culture of your ancestors and other cultures that have nothing in common with your family, but don't "get involved/stopped/" in that thinking because then you will never feel part of thatculture.
my family has that culture though, I was just the only one that didn't have the chance to grow up with it. I now also live away for university, so I don't have the chance to ask them to help me with this, that's why I am trying to learn it on my own.
"You cannot understand a culture unless you know its language."
I'd suggest you become fluent in Spanish. Specifically, that you learn Spanish from other Puerto Ricans, so you get familiar with the regional lingo.
From there, you can dig into the history of Puerto Rico. Where certain traditions come from, and so on. Little by little, you'll get an understanding of the country and why it is the way it is in the present day.
Of course, along the way, you can interact with Puerto Rican culture in more direct ways as you learn the language fully. Go to PR restaurants, listen to PR music (someone mentioned Daddy Yankee, but he genuinely isna hugely successful artist from Puerto Rico), look up books or news about Puerto Rico.
It’s impossible if you are a MultiGen American Latino. Typically the ones that truly speak Spanish are 1st or 2nd Gen. Unless you are born in Latin America, you’ll never understand. This is very common among those of us that are MultiGen. 1st and 2Gen will never understand because MultiGen American Latinos grow up very privileged and “white” by their estimation.
This shouldn’t make you any less Latino.
I am 6th Generation Tejana and my family has converted to Anglo through decades of Anglo/Latin mixing in my family. Me and my siblings are the last generation of Latinos that carry any physical appearance of our ethnicity. Every niece and nephew of mine is Anglo with Anglo last names like Brooks.
Welcome!! Mexicana living in Chicago here. First off... Puerto Rican AND Persian? Are you by chance the most beautiful person on earth?
But seriously, as people have said, what better way to connect to your culture than via language and food?! I absolutely love love Puerto Rican cuisine. Fried plantains, mofongo, arroz con gandules... 😋 all day. If you consume pork as well as alcohol, there's lechón and a simple daiquiri with Puerto Rican rum, truly some of life's great pleasures.
Obvi visiting "La Isla del Encanto" itself would be a wonderful experience, but if you find yourself in New York or Chicago, both cities have vibrant Puerto Rican communities. As a matter of fact, Chicago's big Puerto Rican Festival is going on this weekend and is a wonderful time.
Puerto Rico has a deep, rich, and like many Latin American places, often painful history. I'd encourage you to read up on some. There's likely Native Caribbean DNA in your blood via the indigenous Arawak-speaking Taino people... so that might be an entire other part of your culture to explore!!!
Where do you live in Canada!? I know that in Ontario there are a lot of Latinos so go to festivals (specially now that’s summer) go to the local stores, eat more food, talk more with your Puerto Rican side of your family, do some research on the history of PR, and lastly if you get the chance visit PR!
Good for you for trying to reconnect!✨♥️
That's a very interesting mix! I, too, am Persian living in Canada, and due to listening to Reggaeton 24/7 and my own fascination with the Puerto Rican culture, am very much invested in it as well. Let me know if you wanted to chat.
Did u have a chance to have any of the food growing up? I’ve really enjoyed learning how to make certain dishes (my mom and aunts never learned bc they’re too lazy to cook, and my grandma never taught me, so I had to learn on my own anyway)

Read it and become radicalized!!!! Getting to know about our history helped me to fill in some family and cultural gaps.
Wear fanny pack across your chest, cut your eyebrow in two, drive a can-am, drink gasolina or palo-ready, call everyone you talk to “baby” ex. Mera baby ese culo tira peo?, have a cerquillo. With all these you will have a very cultural experience
Most Puerto Ricans, if not most of those in the US have never even visited Puerto Rico or speak fluent Spanish(I grew up in the East Coast around them all). You make absolutely no sense in your statement.
I do speak fluent english? I also do speak spanish but definitely not at the speed of native puerto ricans. how is it not my culture if i'm half puerto rican 😭 just because I didn't have the privilege of growing up in puerto rico doesn't take away from it being my culture.
Beyond the obvious of visiting at some point: Listen to Puerto Rican music, learn Spanish preferably from a Puerto Rican tutor so you can speak in the particular dialect and tell this tutor not to neutralize their Spanish for your sake. Watch Puerto Rican movies and shows. Read Puerto Rican books. Learn the dances common there. Eat and learn to make Puerto Rican food.
I feel like every Puerto Rican I know that didn’t feel like they connected with their culture went to live to Puerto Rico for a year a two with extended family
What about an exchange program? If your university requires foreign language credits, surely taking some easy classes in Puerto Rico would count towards that.
I ended up being exempt sure to fluency but it’s worth a shot if the university has some grants and can pay for it
Persian and Puerto Rican 😂 you got me there bud…the flag has to be every where that is the first step, and learn how to say “yo soy boricuaaaa pa Que tú lo sepa” really really loud..
You’d be best starting out by learning Spanish, the YouTube channel Dreaming Spanish is a great resource for learning to understand and speak it. It’s just really listening to content at your level so if you start out with superbeginner, as you rack up the hours you’ll find yourself understanding natural speech over time, and the words in speaking naturally come to you.
Eventually when you hit a good level you can branch out into native content or other learners content if it’s out there for Puerto Rican Spanish, and from there engaging in music, tv, books, movies, etc. will help you immerse more in the Puerto Rican culture.
Search everybody on this [song](https://youtu.be/ssdN7ZfavHs?si=uhw-y36oWEAdgC7c) . They've made history on a music scale. I know it ain't ur solution but music can helo a lot on your talk skills
https://preview.redd.it/l5kqrpopbd5d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=443169c017d78f7899f606e8601699865526f7a0
Get a Honda Civic, buy a cheap aftermarket muffler, replace rims with new ones that don't match the cars colour. Get cheap subs off Facebook marketplace & drive through queens NYC blasting dembow or reggaeton
Hey man im Puerto Rican, and I detect no lie. Wepa!
Lmfao
Don’t forget to put stickers on it like “P fucking R”.
All this by blasting the PR National anthem: Gasolina
So puerto Ricans are The Sinaloa people of the usa? They do the same with narco corridos
Sinaloans don't whip civics they whip lifted or slammed American trucks
Start by putting that flag on you rear view mirror.
Also, blast some bad bunny on the way to the puerto rican restaurant.
As a Puerto Rican, yes.
Mofongo time 🤟🏼
hahah I love puerto ricans love for their nation❤️ ordering a flag as we speak
Order the flag with the right blue! The version you posted is the one post-incorporation into the American state, the one favored on the island is sky blue
wow I didn't even know that! thank you for letting me know!
Technically it’s a U.S. territory, not a nation.

Nah it’s not Hobelto it’s Robelto.
Go to the Bronx.
The best way is to visit the country.
yes i'd like to visit puerto rico so much! I definitely will be going soon in the upcoming year
It definitely looks beautiful. Keep practicing your Spanish and don't be embarrassed to try and have conversations with others. That's the best way to learn!

Just never pronounce s when talking Spanish
But you are Canadian, what's wrong with your native culture?
that's my nationality not my ethnicity. canadians don't have "culture", unless you're talking about native canadians which I am not. I wasn't even born here
How do canadians not have culture wtf? It's obvious a subset of anglo american culture
OP it's just being blatantly xenophobic.
Yes, I heard a lot by US "Mexican" citizens. I got plenty of relatives like those because I was born in a immigrant family. I hope you find a way to build an authentic identity outside your fetiche country.
Listen to your national anthem of la gasolina
I always go back on YouTube and search up “puerto Rican national anthem Olympics” and I click on the video by a channel named “Dred.” and I laugh

If it's not your culture, it's not your culture. Anything else is just fake.
Learning spanish and practicing Catholicism are the most important things, all others are largely superficial
Spanish, the one thing that unites all of us is language.

Listen to Gasolina on repeat for months. after the first wave of reggaetón i think a lot of us became more acquainted with PR
I used to be obsessed with that song ever since I was a kid 😹😹
Wear fanny pack across your chest, cut your eyebrow in two, drive a can-am, drink gasolina or palo-ready, call everyone you talk to “baby” ex. Mera baby ese culo tira peo?, have a cerquillo. With all these you will have a very cultural experience
Get as many Puerto Rican women pregnant as you can, I’m talking like 6+, that will get you connected really quick
😂
Lmao you are gringo, thats not your culture
actually it is my culture! hope this helps 😹
No one that is part of that culture would ask something like that lmao You dont speak fluent spanish and havent lived there How is it your culture?
Thats a awesome combo wow

I feel like every Puerto Rican I know that didn’t feel like they connected with their culture went to live to Puerto Rico for a year a two with extended family
I was thinking about this too! i'm currently in university though so I have to wait until I graduate
What about an exchange program? If your university requires foreign language credits, surely taking some easy classes in Puerto Rico would count towards that. I ended up being exempt sure to fluency but it’s worth a shot if the university has some grants and can pay for it
Watch "The greatest love story never told"
Persian and Puerto Rican 😂 you got me there bud…the flag has to be every where that is the first step, and learn how to say “yo soy boricuaaaa pa Que tú lo sepa” really really loud..
You’d be best starting out by learning Spanish, the YouTube channel Dreaming Spanish is a great resource for learning to understand and speak it. It’s just really listening to content at your level so if you start out with superbeginner, as you rack up the hours you’ll find yourself understanding natural speech over time, and the words in speaking naturally come to you. Eventually when you hit a good level you can branch out into native content or other learners content if it’s out there for Puerto Rican Spanish, and from there engaging in music, tv, books, movies, etc. will help you immerse more in the Puerto Rican culture.

wow why so hateful

What culture? Your culture is wherever you were born in.
If you weren't raised in Puerto Rico then it isn't your culture. There is no "Puerto Rican side", you are from the place you were born in.
