I've sent back 6 Leathermans so far for destroying them on random shit. From blades, to bits, to plier heads and even the frame itself. I even tell them to charge me for what's not covered. And every single time they've repaired it for no charge. Best warranty hands down.
I've probably sent in a dozen smashed Leathermans I've found on various roads or worksites. These extra Leathermans I put in first aid kits, gloveboxes, etc. Found one Leatherman busted into two halves. Sent one half back. Received new Leatherman. A couple years later I sent the other half back.... new Leatherman. 2x multiplier (get it?) on that one.
This is why LM’s cost so much. They have to build in cost for everyone to cover the clowns who destroy them with misuse and the just go…no problem, it’ll be replaced.
Which is why so many companies don’t offer good warranties anymore. People abuse it. Do you think LM is going to just take it as a loss? No…they add more to the price of future tools based on how many they have to replace. This number goes up because you abuse it.
This is why we can’t have nice things anymore.
These are tools. Meant for WORK. They're made to take a beating. And everyone here values their Leatherman, especially for their warranty. If you can't see the value in that, then buy something else. Simple as that. Don't come here and complain about others. It won't change a thing 😂
Pout some more. You’re making up random assumptions on why a company you have zero affiliation with has expensive tools lmao
Leatherman knows what they get sent for repair. If they had a problem with it, they’d be stricter with what they allow.
But guess what? They don’t change the warranty because they know we value it & use the hell out of our tools.
You’re not gonna comment to the guy that sent in 1 handle for a new LM then the other handle for another LM? (Edit) now that’s abuse.
Victorinox has even more expensive plier based multitools than Leatherman with a lifetime warranty too. Go there & stir shit up.
I can’t even understand what point you are trying to make here because your writing is so convoluted.
What don’t you understand about warranties?
And not pouting. Anyone who points out that you are burden isn’t pouting.
Right because anybody who can’t follow your broken sentences and convoluted thinking is the problem. Not you.
Companies that offer warranties raise prices to cover the warranties and their processing. Is that dumbed down enough for you?
This is common knowledge how warranties and companies work.
😂 you asked and then proceeded to answer your own question. Yes, they will account for all the warranty claims, and raise the cost of the future products. And yes, I will gladly pay the price for it in the future. And again, if you don't see the value of the customer service and warranty, purchase something else. 😂
You obviously missed the part in your reply that the commenter found a LM broke in 2 pieces. They sent 1 half in and got a replacement, then later sent the other half in and got another replacement. It's basically Fraud,
Just because they have to fix the warranties, it's not like it's always costing them a whole new tool. Most of the time they can replace the broken parts, and thats what they usually do. And if the person ends up with a new one. They probably use the parts from the old to make refurbished tools too.
Any dealing with warranties cost them money.
The parts are one thing. The replacement of them by hand by a skilled tech is another. Processing. Receiving. Shipping. Record keeping. All costs them money and that is all passed along to the consumer in advance by raising the price.
This isn’t some big secret. Cars, Consumer products, and even some services that have warranties have ALWAYS passed it along to the consumers in pricing. You seem to think they just consider it the cost of doing business for them. It’s not. They don’t take a loss because clowns run electricity through the tool that it isnt designed for.
Exactly my experiences.
Me:
"I completely abused this tool and knownite my fault. Can I pay you to fix it?"
Leatherman:
"Here, have a new one or a free repair. We'll sharpen it and give you new bits too. Do you want a new pouch while you're here?"
There are reasons beyond being high quality that I'm a customer for life. As long as they keep up this service I'll keep using Leatherman tools.
>I've sent back 6 Leathermans so far for destroying them on random shit.
You should try victorinox. If you like the super tool and rebar models like I do, theyre way nicer and like most Vic products, theyre made extremely well, high quality, and as far as I seen, dont break.
>And every single time they've repaired it for no charge.
Leathermans warranty is good, but when you combine it with the context that theyre not made like they used too, quality control problems, etc, its not as nice tbh.
Really? I've never even considered Victorinox. I've had a swiss army knife as a kid and thats all I used to compare the two brands. The Leatherman was simply more rugged between the two. Not to knock Victorinox though, I have like 12 different butchering knives from them, and they're the top tier for butcher knives. Which Victorinox model multitool do you consider comparable to the LM?
>Really? I've never even considered Victorinox.
Same, I always liked leathermans because pliers, but victorinox has had plier based models since the 90s..... I guess they dont advertise them.
>The Leatherman was simply more rugged between the two
I think a lot of it is just marketing tbh, the swiss tools (which is what victorinox calls their plier based models) vs leatherman, theres a clear difference in marketing.
Ive used my victorinox for the same things ive used my super tool and rebar for and its fine.
>Which Victorinox model multitool do you consider comparable to the LM?
They only have 2 models for the most part. If youre like me and you like the supertool 300 and rebar, the spirit MX and swiss tool MX are significantly better.
One hand opening blade with the MX models , all tools open from the outside, blunt nose pliers for better twisting strength, typical high polish tools, ive taken my swiss tool in dry heat Cali to disgusting humid Arizona, early morning condensation from backpacking, to straight up dumping it in water, it just doesnt rust. Also, all the tools have have their own spring, meaning if I pull out the awl or blade, just that tool comes out, vs leatherman where you get clumping, they now offer a pocket clip, etc.
There are downsides, no bit adapter like the leathermans (but there are so many micro rachet/bit drivers out there that it isn't that big of a deal) wire cutters sucks, the design doesnt really cut smaller stray copper well, and they aren't replaceable. Also if you have weak finger nails, wear thick gloves (normal grip gloves I use in the warehouse I can still access tools) or have nubs than you straight up can't use the tool.
Yeah I suppose but there is no other good way to clean a file that I know of so if you (or someone else) have a better way than I'm all ears. I have a dirty and beaten up metal brush I use as my file brush so it doesn't make a difference to me.
That’s why I have my Rebar. It’s my work Leatherman. If it gets beat up, I don’t really care.
I don’t have an Arc (because that price is ridiculous) but I probably wouldn’t carry it much because of it.
I love that I finally see someone out there actually using their Arc for something more than photography lol.
It would be cool if the Arc had the Tshank like the Surge and the files could just be switched out.
This is the one thing that I think would make it the "ultimate" multi tool. If I could take out the file and use the diamond side to hone the blade or swap it for another tool. Still love it the way it is but this would make it perfect.
I use mine daily multiple times a day. You never see it because I don’t take picture of it. I’m not a hey look at me attention sorta guy. It’s a tool, I use it when I’m done it goes back in the sheath onto the next thing. When I get home it goes in the dump tray till tomorow
Cleaning up a connection on a battery/ jumpstart ing it. I must of put the negative onto the positive because it made a huge spark and melted part of the terminal.

Ok ok cool, I’ll probably wait till it snaps in half before I send it 😂

It went right over your head didn’t it? Not that you would be able to answer that question.
Pout some more. You’re making up random assumptions on why a company you have zero affiliation with has expensive tools lmao Leatherman knows what they get sent for repair. You’re genuinely slow if you cannot understand my comment lol want me to space it out more for ya, buddy? Here…

Yep. It went right over your head. Just like I knew it would.
Sure 😂
Clearly. Everyone else can see it.
You obviously missed the part in your reply that the commenter found a LM broke in 2 pieces. They sent 1 half in and got a replacement, then later sent the other half in and got another replacement. It's basically Fraud,
Let's not forget that what they fix probably doesn't cost them near as much as it would us to do it ourselves.
I have no idea what has to do with this conversation.
Just because they have to fix the warranties, it's not like it's always costing them a whole new tool. Most of the time they can replace the broken parts, and thats what they usually do. And if the person ends up with a new one. They probably use the parts from the old to make refurbished tools too.
Does repair or replace cost them more than to not repair or replace due to misuse or abuse? Do you think they eat that cost?
All I'm saying is a good chunk of the warranties aren't going to cost them alot. Especially since they don't always approve it.
Any dealing with warranties cost them money. The parts are one thing. The replacement of them by hand by a skilled tech is another. Processing. Receiving. Shipping. Record keeping. REI is an example of this. Unfortunately.
Yep.

Ah okay. Thank you for all the info I'll go check them out!
I don't see why not? Folks have janked their LM with worse and had them fixed under warranty.
How do you clean your shit out of the file? Doesn’t sound fun
Haha, it got pretty western😂
You take a metal brush and brush in the direction of the lines. You should ideally do this every time you use a file.
Then you get shit on your metal brush. No one wants shit all over the gaff
Yeah I suppose but there is no other good way to clean a file that I know of so if you (or someone else) have a better way than I'm all ears. I have a dirty and beaten up metal brush I use as my file brush so it doesn't make a difference to me.
You just soak the brush in Liquid Shit-b-Gone
With another Leatherman’s file…
Nice. Use my arc daily.
Arc your Arc?
Use it properly lol
Haha yea was doing dumb things
That’s why I have my Rebar. It’s my work Leatherman. If it gets beat up, I don’t really care. I don’t have an Arc (because that price is ridiculous) but I probably wouldn’t carry it much because of it.

I agree, it would be nice, but I still like the full size.
I use mine daily multiple times a day. You never see it because I don’t take picture of it. I’m not a hey look at me attention sorta guy. It’s a tool, I use it when I’m done it goes back in the sheath onto the next thing. When I get home it goes in the dump tray till tomorow
That would be covered, but I wouldn't send it in for just that.
It still works, right? Keep using it.
I’m an electrician who carries this daily and I need to know what you were doing
Cleaning up a connection on a battery/ jumpstart ing it. I must of put the negative onto the positive because it made a huge spark and melted part of the terminal.
I would expect to see pliers arced, but not the file lol.
Ehh it still has a lot of use in it, I wouldn’t even send it back yet
Way to arc your arc!👍🏼😃
The diamond side works amazingly well for putting an edge on another knife.
