This or the rest of the Vengeance Trilogy. Lady Vengeance was my favorite
Edit: Memories of Murder, Sympathy for Mr.. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are free on Tubi in the US. And Park's JSA. I always had a hard time finding them, so hopefully this is helpful to others.
sympathy for mr vengeance and oldboy are tied as best for me, but lady vengeance is great. The Handmaiden is great too. Park Chan-Wook is just awesome.
I love Handmaiden, it's my favorite from Park Chan-Wook, and tbh he is a director that I struggle to engage sometimes, like Thirst, Decision to Leave, Stoker, and even some parts of the trilogy of Vengeance aren't great for me, but Handmaiden... that was THE shit.
I haven't seen Thirst or Stoker yet, but yeah, i did not like Decision to Leave whatsoever. Chan-Wook was my highest-rated director on average before i saw that, but it was such a letdown.
Finally, I'm not alone!!!! For me Decision to Leave looked very much like Thirst in structure and plot, and it also had similarities with Stoker, but at least Stoker is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever saw (the transitions are fire.)
(é brasileiro ou não? achei que o nome pudesse indicar que sim)
they're completely different styles of films but yeah, to me they're both near perfect. Oldboy is a wacky, twist filled, gut-punching action mystery flick. Whereas, Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is a more meditative, albeit insane, tragedy. It's one of my favorite looking movies ever with beautiful scenery and cinematography, and although Oldboy has more iconic scenes and higher highs, I struggle to find many things i dislike about Mr Vengeance, also.
I also unironically gave Madame Webb 4 stars.
Nothing like the comics, but still fun. It was nice to see a female superhero without physical superpowers outwit a superpowered baddie. Sure, I have some nitpicks but the blistering hatred this movie is getting is unwarranted.
If all the big movie critics were trashing it before it even had its official release, you can’t blame a hate bandwagon and realize maybe it’s just a bad movie.
It’s fine to like a bad movie, but don’t go around saying it’s good and everybody is wrong and just hating to hate. There’s a reason Dakota Johnson fired her talent agency.
So why didn't you like Madame Webb?
Critics are typically very hard on superhero movies so if I dig a property, director or cast then I see the movie anyway.
Sure, I've gotten bit before (e.g., The Phantom, Spider-Man 3, Catwoman, etc.) but seeing movies is fun. I don't know what else to tell you.
I’m not faulting you for enjoying it, you’re allowed to enjoy whatever you want and I’m not going to hate on you for it. It’s the fact you’re saying people are just haters and it’s objectively good, which just isn’t true.
> It’s the fact you’re saying people are just haters and it’s objectively good
Where did they say that? They said:
> Nothing like the comics, but still fun
> Sure, I have some nitpicks but the blistering hatred this movie is getting is unwarranted.
Not sure where the objectively good thing came into play.
Or, you just dont have to agree with everything crticis says and go with crowd every time. An opinion can't be wrong. If someone think it's good movie thats just as fairs as think it's bad movie
It’s objectively bad, and that’s ok. I like the movie Eragon even though it’s an objectively bad movie and most people hate it. I’m not going to go argue with everyone saying it’s good when I know it’s not, but I still like it.
Thank you!! overhated movie of the year and it’s only february. I went in expecting an absolute dumpster fire and instead was entertained and engaged. It wasn’t a 10/10, but it was funny and a good ride. Unfortunately, it was destined to be hated before it was even released so it never stood a chance.
Princess Mononoke is actually incredible, saw it for the first time like 2 months ago in the cinema, and I still think about it. I'm not an anime fan at all, but that movie is awesome.
>I'm not an anime fan at all, but that movie is awesome.
Same. I'm fine saying that it's not just "good for an anime movie" but a great movie that can stand with the rest of them.
I want to watch that movie but its so long, but Seven Samurai is longer however Malcoln X also every versipns I have seen of it seem they dont looks very good in temrs of visuals for whatever reason, I started the movie once but was turn off by how quality it was. maybe I watch the wrong version
Its ok but I think for modern watcher it doesnt hit as hard due to age (and lost negatives), if it was made nowdays with modern capacities for fight choreography and effects and everything maybe it can be 5 star then but you have to view it as products of its time
Honestly, I’ve found that if you like one Villeneauve movie, you’ll like most - at least if you also like sci-fi. BR 2049, Arrival, Dune, Sicario, all his movies are bangers. Haven’t watched Enemy yet, but it’s on my list
The Piano (1993)
My favorite Jane Campion film. Dark, but warm-blooded and there's a love story in there too to balance out the muddy misery of New Zealand in the 1800s. I don't see this movie mentioned enough in this subreddit so I always jump at the chance to do so, when a bleak masterpiece is required.
Disagree on Pickpocket tbh. The others I have saw them and agrees they are 5 stars and many people who watches them would give that scores but Pickpocket is far from guarantee of that. I watch Picpocket with big group of friends who a fews of them even studying film in university and none of us give it more than 4 stars out of 5 rating. Thats anecdote which i know isnt evidences but I think this one is more of personal favorites for some peoples than one for continue 5 star streaks. But is a good movie to
Eh, maybe so. I was more so just putting films that I immediately gave a 5/5 after watching because they just clicked for me in every way. I can see people not gravitating toward his directing style of actors, but he’s monumental imo.
The Night of the Hunter (1955)
Tells the story of children whose new stepdad is a serial killer/black widower. They go on the run and try to escape him as he hunts them down. The cinematography is stellar and blends Southern Gothic with German Expressionism. The river boat scene as well as the shot where Ruby looks up at the neon signs will forever be etched into my mind.
The performances are great. Robert Mitchum was amazing. He’s like the human version of Jeepers Creepers. Lillian Gish is everything! She’s my favorite actress of all time.
Alien, Terminator 2, Banshees of Inisherin, Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Inception, Se7en, The Northman, Apocalypse Now, Dr. Strangelove
All movies I gave 5 stars to off the top of my head
You should definitely watch the recent romantic comedy “Anyone But You” just for some lighter fare. It might continue your five star streak. If not, it was good while it lasted.
Based upon the movies that you've already rated as five stars, it would seem that you love movies with a twisted/shocking ending.
So I would say Memento or Fight Club.
Oldboy takes the crown of shocking endings though. Hard to beat that twist lmao

Oldboy and Incendies is a cursed double feature you should continue that streak of anxiety inducing movies with Uncut Gems
good time is better imo
No at all for me. It seemed like a precursor to greatness of Uncut Gems
Why does one need to be better? What a boring point
Uncut gems is great. I saw it for The Weeknd but it ended up being good
Memories of Murder
Damn, was about to say this
Same, but I'll say watch *The Long Goodbye* after that to keep the streak going further.
This or the rest of the Vengeance Trilogy. Lady Vengeance was my favorite Edit: Memories of Murder, Sympathy for Mr.. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are free on Tubi in the US. And Park's JSA. I always had a hard time finding them, so hopefully this is helpful to others.

they are tied?? imo oldboy is very very ahead!! the tension, the story, everything!!

Can I please see your Letterboxd profile? I NEED to see what you got going on there.
A top 4 that's All That Jazz, In the Mood for Love, Army of Darkness, and Rocky pretty well sums it up.
I also unironically gave Madame Webb 4 stars. Nothing like the comics, but still fun. It was nice to see a female superhero without physical superpowers outwit a superpowered baddie. Sure, I have some nitpicks but the blistering hatred this movie is getting is unwarranted.

A movie cannot be "objectively" good or bad, that goes against the definition of what "objectively" means in english
It's as campy and funny as Showgirls, and my rankings are entirely functioning as a "would I tell people to watch it" scale.
Thank you!! overhated movie of the year and it’s only february.
The AMC ghibli run last year was awesome if it’s where you caught it
>I'm not an anime fan at all, but that movie is awesome. Same. I'm fine saying that it's not just "good for an anime movie" but a great movie that can stand with the rest of them.
IIRC Hayao Miyazaki said it himself that he doesn't consider his films anime
Seven Samurai. Classic fucking movie, used to have a threatrical poster (reprint) on my wall.
I was actually thinking about watching that or Harakiri
Seven Samurai if you want a classic action/adventure, Harakiri if you want something more bleak and meditative.
Harakiri fucks hard
Harakiri is one of my favorites, so I would definitely recommend.
Can't go wrong mate. Can't speak for Harakiri, so keep me posted with your thoughts.
I was trying to figure out how to say Harakiri is an easier watch then remembered it’s a full 70 minutes shorter
Seven Samurai and Hara Kiri are my 2nd and 3rd favourite films of all time, respectively, so honestly you can’t go wrong with either of them
Whats first?
Malcolm X (1992)!
I want to watch that movie but its so long, but Seven Samurai is longer however Malcoln X also every versipns I have seen of it seem they dont looks very good in temrs of visuals for whatever reason, I started the movie once but was turn off by how quality it was. maybe I watch the wrong version
Watch seven samurai first because Harakiri is more of a deconstruction and it works better if you have seen more samurai films.
Both are amazing
Its ok but I think for modern watcher it doesnt hit as hard due to age (and lost negatives), if it was made nowdays with modern capacities for fight choreography and effects and everything maybe it can be 5 star then but you have to view it as products of its time

Shadow of a Doubt. My favorite Hitchcock film and one that I just finished re-watching. Script was ahead of its time.
The Night of the Hunter (1955) Tells the story of children whose new stepdad is a serial killer/black widower. They go on the run and try to escape him as he hunts them down.
