A lot of people in the comment sections have it as a top 10 film ever, so it naturally gets a lot of hate. I think most people recognize it's great, but personally it's nowhere that level in my opinion.
There is something about his style that's just shallow. Maybe is the script, the edits, the cast but while he has nice ideas, the movies feel a bit empty.
He would be a great action/adventure director though. Imagine a Die Hard movie with the plane scene from TDKR.
I’ve never seen a comment in this sub say that yet but honestly it was so underwhelming I couldn’t finish it, especially as compared to Inception and Oppenheimer.
How can you get past all the mumbling and hard to hear dialogue in tenet, and the scene where the scientist just expository vomits the whole conceit (with props!)?
the way i see it is that the dialogue under other noises is a creative decision and intended, you're not explicitly supposed to hear it, the dialogue is clear when it needs to be
the only moment thats slightly annoying is when they sail the raceboat with Sator and his wife throws him into the water and you dont really see why or what happened, because otherwise that conversation is semi-intelligible at a few points and you can make out some blabber between P and Sator
there is no other that i can think of, hard to hear dialogue only happens as soldier shouting or the scene when Neil walks through the facility but thats clearly on purpose because the tour's audio is fully muddled as a stylistic choice
and the scientist scene you mean when P learns about the technology? i think it flows well because the exposition is for him, he needs to know that, and we learn along, you'd be surprised how many people still didnt understand it, even with that scene
Yeah the boat scene I remember being inexplicable. And I would argue that most film people and writers would agree it’s not great form to just expository dump an entire conceit. It’s just silly. There are always better ways of explaining the concept than an expository dump.
Interstellar is my numero uno because that movie is gorgeous, has a hugely talented team behind it, I saw it in IMAX when it came out and that was one of the greatest theater experiences of my life. Matthew McConaughey crying after seeing how much time he lost was heartbreaking.
2. Dark Knight
3. Insomnia
4. Memento
5. Inception
I love Robin Williams as a performer, seemed like he was a kind dude too. And I think my bias towards both Pacino and Williams makes me like the movie a lot more than I would otherwise. However still a good movie regardless of actors, Nolan did a great job on that thriller, I wish I had been able to watch it in theaters.
There is exactly one similarity between Paprika and Inception and that’s the concept of going into dreams. They could not be more different in literally every other way.
Aronofsky definitely ripped him off though
I finally watched Paprika this year and I could not understand why people have been calling Inception a rip-off of it this whole time. As you say, they could not be more different aside from sharing one very basic mechanical concept (which each film utilizes in a completely different manner...)
Mine:
1. Inception
2. Momento
3. Interstellar
4. Oppenheimer
5. The prestige
Honestly i like them all pretty much equally, on a different day it coukd be a completly different order.
I’d say it’s my favorite from a story perspective. I think it’s not as rewatchable, which isn’t necessarily a “knock” on it, but the others stand out a little more. Crazy to think Memento was his second ever film, fucking wild.
1. The Prestige (favorite film of all time)
2. Memento (top 5 all time)
3. Interstellar (masterpiece)
4. Inception (masterpiece)
5. The Dark Knight (near-masterpiece)
Interstellar, Inception, Oppenheimer, Insomnia, The Prestige
The first two rank higher than the other three, but that's it when it comes to ranking them.
EDIT: shoutout to the other person in the 100+ comment post who put Insomnia on their list.

top 6 is 5/5, TDK and Dunkirk are 4.5, Insomnia and Following 4
NOTE: haven't watched Batman Begins in ages, and never watched TDKR
Memento > The Prestige > Dark Knight > Interestellar > Inception best to worst, although they are all good. Insomnia is really good to. I haven't seen Dunkirk or Following. Rest of them are ok.
If you haven't seen it and you are a Nolan fan, I'd recommend Transcendence, is directed by Nolan's Director of Photography, Wally Pfister. It has the same camera movements, pace, cast, and classy-gentlemen vibe of a Nolan movie.
The movie gets shit for being boring, but if you are into no-action no-apologies sci-fi, it's a treat.
The Prestige
Interstellar
Inception
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
I’m sure Memento would fit in here somewhere, I just didn’t rank it as I haven’t seen it since like 2006
I like how everyone’s lists are so wildly different. That’s a good thing.
Anyway, here are mine in no particular order:
* The Dark Knight
* The Prestige
* Insomnia
* Oppenheimer
* Interstellar
1. Memento
2. Tenet
3. Inception
TDK, Oppenheimer
yes, i do like time shenanigans and plots slowly coming together until the very end, how did you guess

3. Momento (a top 5 in the theater experience)

This sub loves to say they don’t like interstellar lol
It's one of my favourite movies, I don't really lose my mind over anything Nolans made, but that movie just did it for me.
It's my number 1! Downvote me, bitches!
I gave it 4.5 stars after a recent rewatch. I just love some of his other work more. I have it at 6th on my Nolan Filmography Ranking.
Its at 4.5 for me currently but ill be rewatching it soon on a much larger screen then ive seen it on before so who knows.
I like it, its just that I actually like Sci Fi and it felt like he is just trying to be Kubrick.
I’ve never seen a comment in this sub say that yet but honestly it was so underwhelming I couldn’t finish it, especially as compared to Inception and Oppenheimer.
The Prestige Dunkirk Oppenheimer Inception The Dark Knight (In no particular order)
Im about the same, except I’d probably swap Inception for Memento.
The Prestige is in my top five movies, of any kind, ever.
Based. The only change I would consider is Memento over Dunkirk, both four stars for me.
Wow finally someone who doesn’t consider Interstellar as the greatest thing to ever grace mankind
Goat
Inception Interstellar The dark knight Memento The prestige
1. Interstellar 2. Oppenheimer 3. The Prestige 4. Memento 5. Tenet All of these are 10/10s to me

I guess a 10/10 means nothing
Interstellar is my numero uno because that movie is gorgeous, has a hugely talented team behind it, I saw it in IMAX when it came out and that was one of the greatest theater experiences of my life. Matthew McConaughey crying after seeing how much time he lost was heartbreaking. 2. Dark Knight 3. Insomnia 4. Memento 5. Inception

However still a good movie regardless of actors, Nolan did a great job on that thriller, I wish I had been able to watch it in theaters.
Inception is not a Nolan movie, Satoshi Kon made it. /s
It’s kinda ridiculous how much of his relatively small filmography was eventually stolen by bigger directors. It’s not 1:1 but… c’mon…
There is exactly one similarity between Paprika and Inception and that’s the concept of going into dreams. They could not be more different in literally every other way. Aronofsky definitely ripped him off though

Mine: 1. Inception 2. Momento 3. Interstellar 4. Oppenheimer 5. The prestige Honestly i like them all pretty much equally, on a different day it coukd be a completly different order.
All I will say is that Memento is hard to beat. Not as flashy or big budget as his later films, but the one that sticks with me the most.
I’d say it’s my favorite from a story perspective. I think it’s not as rewatchable, which isn’t necessarily a “knock” on it, but the others stand out a little more. Crazy to think Memento was his second ever film, fucking wild.
Ah yes, Christopher Nolan: one of the directors of all time
He sure directs

W list!
No Tenet? No Dunkirk? No Prestige? What are we doing, ppl?
I should preface, the only movie from his filmography that I have under 4 stars is TDKR, it just comes down to preference.
I have Memento and Following at 3.5, and the rest at 4 or higher too, including 4 5-star films
Memento, then nothing else but I haven't care for anything else.
