Funny how you are absolutely right. People who say "guilty pleasure" or "bad movies that I like" are just people that cant sustain their taste. Yeah everything I like is good!
I agree about guilty pleasures but you can absolutely like a film and admit it's bad. There is such a thing as an objectively bad film, I like some of them and so do you, but they're bad.
For me this is what "guilty pleasure" means. I don't actually feel any guilt or shame about anything I watch, it's just shorthand for "I acknowledge that this is objectively very bad filmmaking, but I enjoy it despite that."
I also don't feel embarrassed about anything I have given five stars. Not even Deathstalker 2, which is probably objectively the worst movie I have given five stars, but I just get so much enjoyment every time I watch it, and it has unironically become one of my comfort movies.
There is no such thing as "objectively bad" because art is also subjective. There are movies that some people consider terrible but others can see it as a well executed project - and therefore, like it. Most of the time, when people say they like a bad film, they just don't know how to defend it or are afraid to go against the majority (the guilty pleasure, since both terms I used are related).
No, you can absolutely light something very poorly because everyone involved lacked technical skill. You can absolutely have objectively bad sound because of a lack of technical skill and a lack of equipment or a lack of funds or a lack of care in post production. Technicians can and will absolutely tell you when something is bad and they are right.
You can absolutely have objectively bad acting and bad writing and I don't care what death of the author says about that or if it was authorial intent for the acting to be that way. You can have bad directing where Ed Wood doesn't care that his cardboard props fall over and doesn't get another take. Just because every film is someones favorite film doesn't mean that a film doesn't fail on technical or critical standards. A mediocre cliche half baked amateurishly produced work doesn't get to be considered good because one person thinks it's the best.
No, you can't. Art is not fragmented. You don't look at Monalisa and say "oh nice colours hmm didnt like the trace oh poor use of shadows!", you look at the entire thing. So yeah, you can enjoy a part of the movie, like the cenography, but this must be seen as a part of the whole. A movie is a unit of art, and dividing it is a thing that only those who understand nothing about cinema do (like the Oscars).
LOL. Imagine thinking that self important scenesters understand art production better than technicians. You go ahead and appreciate an autographed urinal. I'm going to regard that as a prank that the "artist" themselves wasn't in on.
Talked shit about the urinal from Duchamp = You made it very clear that you don't understand anything about art. Thanks for making my point and hope you can be enlightened one day!
The technical mastery of fluid dynamics and the minimalist rendering of those principles into an aesthetically pleasing or neutral manifestation is the true art and what Duchamp did was graffiti for hipsters to circlejerk to, creating "art" out of hype and marketing while devaluing the actual achievements and accomplishments of actual masters of arts and sciences. The conversation you think is so important was already settled with "the emperor has no clothes" and Ongo Gablogian's pretensions are only valuable to the people who see the clothes. There is art all around but it is technicians that make it, the rest is soggy biscuit. It sounds so much like upper managements "vision" that they take all the value and credit for the work of everyone else. Auteurs deserve to be recognized, but they sure as fuck didn't do it alone and a lot of times they mostly did it through hype men.
To your point about the Mona Lisa, it wouldn't be a true masterpiece if it had glaring technical flaws and the reason it is held up it because of its mastery. Take a hike Ongo.
edit: downvote without reply is conceding the point. If you had an intellegent thing to say in response you would have instead of just trying to hide a well structured disagreement with your perspective. Saying "you clearly "just don't get it" (TM)" is such a scenester poseur regurgitation of received knowledge I am starting to dislike hipsters even more than film bros.
They meant that bad films generally have a lot of elements executed poorly which amount to an overall badly made film...and you can still like it. Why would anyone bother to practice instruments, learn to paint, write, if there was no such thing as bad art? You can love a drawing your two year old made with crayons while knowing that it's not gonna sit in a gallery with the greats.
I think you're doubling down on the semantics of "I like it" equalling "I think it's good". The problem with that argument is that it ignores the time, thought, and dedication put in by those who have truly perfected their craft in order to be good at it. Otherwise you could also say citizen kane, for instance, is a bad film because you didn't enjoy it, which it objectively is not.
Nah. There is clearly passion and a certain craft that goes into movies like Turbo Kid and Hobo with a Shotgun but they aren't sublime in the way Shoplifters is and then you have movies like Requiem for a Dream and Duel to the Death.
My bisexual awakening. Had no idea I found men attractive until that first scene where he so effortlessly picks up that girl. I felt so giddy, I genuinely had to ask myself if I'm gay lmao
My kind of people <3
Side note, I was at a Lana Del Rey dance party and this girl said “you look like the guy from Cruel Intentions.” I disagree but he was my gay awakening so I’m gonna ride that high

I freaking love this movie. Now that Zac Efren is older, I would love a rom com with him and Leslie Mann, I think they had fantastic chemistry. It has a 2.8 on Letterboxd, so I fear I might be the only one.
https://preview.redd.it/cclvbyawvm6d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0d9767a502568392fd2b73315cb290be4268156
Probably this mostly because it’s a show, although in Letterboxd they just have the pilot listed. I believe this was when I first made my account.
And you shouldn't be. Tron Legacy is such a fucking banger. Hate to do the stereotype but Tron on weed...best movie ever. Tron on shrooms...life changing.
Leap Year with Amy Adams. I fucking love that movie and have watched it at least once every 2 years since it came out but I know, I know its hot garbage! They're cute! I love the enemies to lovers! I love the faux Irish mysticism and the faux Irish culture! I love Mathew Goode's terrible Irish accent! I love the old people forcing them to kiss! I love the beautiful Irish landscapes! I love Adam Scott being a dick and being left in the dust!
Will never be able to recommend this one but it’s fucking awesome

I have five starred AND hearted this movie and you can pry it from my cold dead hands.
Did you hear there's likely going to be a sequel!!! With Ncole Kidman and Sandra bullock reprising their roles!!!!
I mean, I'm not *that* embarrassed by any of my 5-star ratings, but I guess more than anything else, Pacific Rim would be one that most people would be like "why the fuck did you give this 5 stars"
Not even a five star but a four star but still embarrassing as hell.

And it’s in my Letterboxd favourites too
My most embarrassing five-stars of all time was on Goodreads for the book version of READY PLAYER ONE, but the five-star pick on Letterboxd that may give me the most flak would probably be THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY.
Not really embarrassed by any but the one I’d probably have to defend the most is BCNR Live at Bush Hall. Love the band and the performance too much to give it anything but.
Anddddd I just went and looked and it must have been de-listed and re-listed since I logged it a while back. Am excuse to rewatch and do a fresh log I suppose.
Don't have one. Partly because I'm not "embarrassed" by opinions I hold, and partly because I know the differe between what I like and what's good, so anything I give five stars to, I think is worth it.
Not embarrassed at all but Yes Man. It's in my top 50 all time favourites list too (not super high on the list lol I'm not that crazy, but it is on there)
SW The Force Awakens. At the time of first viewing it held such promise for the franchise. I still like it, but I may change the rating upon next viewing.
Freddy Got Fingered and I'll die on the "anti comedy" hill till I die. Tom Green is such an innovator and so underrated when it comes to all his projects in the 90s. True pioneer.
I gave Get out a 5 star, but friends said it doesn’t deserve it. I think with the original ending it does deserve it, cant think of anything wrong with it.
It's the way you love me
It's a feeling like this
[It's centrifugal motion ](https://genius.com/9317505/Faith-hill-this-kiss/Its-centrifugal-motion-its-perpetual-bliss-its-that-pivotal-moment)
It's, ah, subliminal
I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’m gonna say it right now species two I gave a five out of five. I love that movie. It’s a movie that try OK it’s trash. it’s knows it trash but again the special effects.
I don't have it as a 5 anymore, but Park Chan-wook's *The Handmaiden*. Not because it's bad, but because there's so much sex and nudity. I'm personally not embarrassed to rate it as high as I did, but I had a girl I was dating watch it because I gave it a 5, and I didn't know she was going to. So, her entire knowledge of what I rate as 5 stars was *The Handmaiden*. Out of all of the 5s, she chose *The Handmaiden*, and she said she enjoyed it, but I was a bit embarrassed. It actually happened twice. The first with the girl i was dating and the second with one of my friends ex's. It's still a great movie, that's not why I dropped it to a 4.5, but that's the only time.
Other than that, just kind of messed-up stuff: *Dogville*, *Oldboy*, etc.
https://preview.redd.it/hyvf4jtpsm6d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=123d3b54c3fef5fee45e1f83577c3a4fbbf28a31
This movie ROCKS and I don't care
I'm not really embarrassed about them, but the most unconventional ones on my five stars list are "little miss sunshine" "the menu" and "princess mononoke"
Edit: I didn't give it five stars, but apparently people don't really like it, so I'm here to say that "scent of a woman" f*ing Rocks (4.5 / 5)
Why would you give a subpar, bad, or mediocre movie 5 stars? If you like the movie that’s fine give it the “like heart” but don’t give the movie 5 stars of it doesn’t deserve it. Like wtf are you doing
I disagree. I understand it can be difficult for some ppl to decipher emotions and intent thru text. It’s why it’s the worst form of communication. All I was doing was offering my opinion. Nothing more.
I'm not embarrassed by any of my ratings. I'm not the one who is wrong. Everyone else is. Duh.

We live in a society, people are scared to admit their favorite things, where did we go wrong as the human race?

Oh man if I could upvote things multiple times I would Be smashing that button all night
Practical Magic is so good. did not expect to love it as much as I did.
It’s so atmospheric
It's really good. The first time I saw it as a child, it was kind of scary, but I've grown to love it. Just found out they're making a sequel
Yea..I loved it too
I have never seen it, but this post is going to get me off the fence
It’s not my fault that Lemonade Mouth is flawless
Transcends the DCOM title to pure kino
I agree with this
so real!
![gif](giphy|Fz9EKXRhp9F1S)
oh for sure, i loved it as a kid and love it as an adult 🤷♀️
Real
Yes! Speak your truth
For me the only way this sequel works is if they are the new aunts
This. Although it would be a shame not to bring back the whole cast
They still can but it would be cool if they had a more like council of witches role
yeah I'd like them to hang out with the original Aunts
Cruel Intentions. It’s not a five star movie but enjoy it as if it were one
My bisexual awakening. Had no idea I found men attractive until that first scene where he so effortlessly picks up that girl. I felt so giddy, I genuinely had to ask myself if I'm gay lmao
This is mine too. It knows exactly what it is and delivers on its promises.
My kind of people <3 Side note, I was at a Lana Del Rey dance party and this girl said “you look like the guy from Cruel Intentions.” I disagree but he was my gay awakening so I’m gonna ride that high
Not embarrassed about any of my 5 stars, they’re rated that highly to me, for me.

Absolutely underrated. Everyone in it shines, particularly Thomas Lennon.
IT HAS A 2.8?? It’s perfectly fine
Probably Idiocracy. I love that movie lol.
Just watched for the first time recently, solid 4 and a half!
OP you’ve accidentally included a photo of Practical Magic in your post instead of a movie it would be embarrassing to give five stars to
https://preview.redd.it/cclvbyawvm6d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0d9767a502568392fd2b73315cb290be4268156 Probably this mostly because it’s a show, although in Letterboxd they just have the pilot listed. I believe this was when I first made my account.
I love the 99 version as much as the 2011 one. Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime, but HxH is up there for sure. Togashi doesn’t miss
Hell yeah, I’m rewatching it at the moment
kindergarten cop
Peak comedic Arnold!
Do not be embarrassed. If you love something, love it! The Mummy (1999) is a masterpiece to me!! No one can convince me otherwise.
honk if you'd rather be watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece "the mummy" starring brendan fraser and rachel weisz
The Mummy is an insanely cozy adventure flick.
Even though I watched this movie on loop as a kid, I still love it to death. I'm gonna rewatch it soon

Knock on the sky and listen to the sound
Nothing, I only like good movies
Practical magic is NOT an embarrassing 5 stars. This movie is just that good.
THIS
Leap Year with Amy Adams. I fucking love that movie and have watched it at least once every 2 years since it came out but I know, I know its hot garbage! They're cute! I love the enemies to lovers! For all of the independent art house films I rated 5 stars, Showgirls (1995) certainly is an interesting standout.
Brilliant satire deserves five stars!

Just looked it up. The art looks gorgeous. Didn't know it was one of the inspiration of Gogo from kill bill.
FBI, yes, this is the guy
The Lego Batman Movie
Nah, my 5 stars are good af. I look at them, say "taste," and close browser.
I have five starred AND hearted this movie and you can pry it from my cold dead hands. Did you hear there's likely going to be a sequel!!! With Ncole Kidman and Sandra bullock reprising their roles!!!!

My Best Friend’s Wedding I will die on this hill.
Loved that one so much.
I watched it every day in the week leading up to my own wedding.
Sweet!
I mean, I'm not *that* embarrassed by any of my 5-star ratings, but I guess more than anything else, Pacific Rim would be one that most people would be like "why the fuck did you give this 5 stars"
Die Another Day. First Bond movie I ever saw and it's the reason why I'm into film in the first place.
Probably Dirty Dancing. But I'm not embarrassed about it at all. I could watch Swayze dance all day.
Not even a five star but a four star but still embarrassing as hell. https://preview.redd.it/iijdexj8ao6d1.png?width=806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cb2f27890d721e90f4b16863fa79f5d034dca57 The worst part is that I don't even have nostalgia as an excuse
I'm pretty happy and confident with my 5 stars and 4.5 stars There's a few movies in the other ratings that I might of been slightly harsh
I wouldn’t say embarrassed but I bet if I watched Johnny Dangerously or Big Business again, I wouldn’t rate it 5 stars a second time.
Practical Magic rluze
Beethoven's 2nd I don't care what anyone says, it's cute and makes me smile.
Nothing. I’m proud of every movie I enjoy. And I rate every Scooby Doo animated movie 5 stars because it’s Scooby Doo.
Midnight margaritas!!
Hamilton
I’m not embarrassed by them at all but Ocean’s Eight, Scary Movie, Blades of Glory, The Pink Panther (2006), Kicking & Screaming
I'm not ashamed to give five stars to I Am Number Four and Jumper, I loved them at the time.
Probably the one that has the least positive consensus is Moulin Rouge
![gif](giphy|cJzFfhfhvtJvgh1Bue) What is there not to love..?
my neighbor totoro 😭i just really love studio ghibli movie, what can i say?

It has a 4.0 and it’s the 13th movie with the most fans (in someone’s top 4), why would this be embarrassing?
Yeah I wouldn’t call it embarrassing really, it’s a genuinely great film, but it’s definitely my least prestige heavy 5 star film on letterboxd.
This movie is beloved though? It’s a popular movie that nearly everyone loves. Not remotely embarrassing to love this film!
No shame, great movie!
that movie is fantastic, completely understandable
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!!
My most embarrassing five-stars of all time was on Goodreads for the book version of READY PLAYER ONE, but the five-star pick on Letterboxd that may give me the most flak would probably be THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY.
Nah…Ready Player One deserves more flak
I’m not at all embarrassed by it, but others would probably tell me it’s Pee-Wees’s Big Adventure
Sigh… Don Jon
That's a very good movie on a difficult (and not addressed enough) topic!
Soul Plane and I'm not embarrassed to say it.
It's better than it had any business being
The Fast and the Furious
That darn cat (1965) may not be a 5 star movie but i love it
I have 5 stars for practical magic as well 😘
This deserves the five stars !
I ain’t embarrassed about shit! Joe vs The Volcano is a damn masterpiece!!
Not embarrassed. Moonraker. The best James Bond movie that ever has and will ever exist (in my opinion obvs…)
Dating the Enemy
Not really embarrassed by any but the one I’d probably have to defend the most is BCNR Live at Bush Hall. Love the band and the performance too much to give it anything but. the garfield movie (2024)
Avatar 2009
Soapdish.
Don't have one. Partly because I'm not "embarrassed" by opinions I hold, and partly because I know the differe between what I like and what's good, so anything I give five stars to, I think is worth it.
Not embarrassed at all but Yes Man. It's in my top 50 all time favourites list too (not super high on the list lol I'm not that crazy, but it is on there)
practical magic is fire
This movie is not good. It's practically f perfect.

Not embarrassed, but would guess that my 5 stars review to Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is pretty unpopular.
Practical magic is unironically my favourite movie
My lb profile literally says that lol
SW The Force Awakens. At the time of first viewing it held such promise for the franchise. I still like it, but I may change the rating upon next viewing.
Why would I be embarrassed by a movie rating
My OCD prevents me from rating movies until I'm entirely confident with my rating.
Good Burger
Loved the first one, so nostalgic, too afraid to be tainted with the sequel though
Genuinely a great flick. “Guilty pleasure” is some bullshit
Freddy Got Fingered and I'll die on the "anti comedy" hill till I die. Tom Green is such an innovator and so underrated when it comes to all his projects in the 90s. True pioneer.

For me 10/10s are incredibly rare, so I'm not embarrased about any of it, because these movies truly deserved it in my book.
I gave Get out a 5 star, but friends said it doesn’t deserve it. I think with the original ending it does deserve it, cant think of anything wrong with it.
I don’t think the film that is widely acclaimed as one of the best films of the past 20 years counts as embarassing.
im with u, but i want an explanation that they can comprehend, why is it good?
Probably 300
Descendants 3 my favorite musical from Disney

Alpha Dog
Risky Business. It's in my top 4 as well
I'm not embarrassed to give Birdemic 5 stars.
I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’m gonna say it right now species two I gave a five out of five. I love that movie. It’s a movie that try OK it’s trash. it’s knows it trash but again the special effects.
I totally slept on Practical Magic, never seen it.
Now why on earth would you be embarrassed to rate Practical Magic 5 stars??
Not embarrassed. Joe Dirt. The movie is everything it's trying to be
Literally none. It’s my letterboxd and it’s my opinion. If my opinion bothers you enough, go masturbate, eat some bread, and calm down.
Either Pixels, Rampage, UHF or The Angry Birds Movie
Catwoman (and I’m not embarrassed about it…)
Project X

Not embarrassed, but Sonic the Hedgehog is a 5 star for me. I love it!
Annie (2014) isn’t exactly embarrassing but literally no one else loves it as much as I do
Paranormal 1 and 2. Horror movies don't scare me but they scared the fuckin shit out of me.

I agree!
I'm not really embarrassed about them, but the most unconventional ones on my five stars list are "little miss sunshine" "the menu" and "princess mononoke" Edit: I didn't give it five stars, but apparently people don't really like it, so I'm here to say that "scent of a woman" f*ing Rocks (4.5 / 5)
Why would you give a subpar, bad, or mediocre movie 5 stars? If you like the movie that’s fine give it the “like heart” but don’t give the movie 5 stars of it doesn’t deserve it. Like wtf are you doing
It’s not that serious
Are you aware that none of this really matters? Why are you mad?
I’m not mad. Who tf said I’m mad?
"Wtf are you doing" sounds like you're mad
I disagree. I understand it can be difficult for some ppl to decipher emotions and intent thru text. It’s why it’s the worst form of communication. All I was doing was offering my opinion. Nothing more.
