Watch Citizen Kane aka one of the most hyped films ever. Then you'll realize it's all worth the hype because it's genuinely great and easy to get into.
Sorry if you've seen all these already, but...
* Crimes of Passion (1984)
* River's Edge (1986)
* Kaboom (2010)
* The Skin I Live In (2011)
* One False Move (1992)
I'm going to lean more into animation and say something like Redline, Ghost in the Shell, or Puss in Boots the last wish. They're all very different tonally but since movies are so visual focused I think those are some great choices to get out of a rut
