Wish I was a teen when peep n the rest of the emo rap genre blending happened all I had I was kid cudi, drake, Mac miller but never anyone being so vulnerable like the peep SoundCloud era
There were a bunch of emo bands but I could never digest their music the way I could once it blended with rap
This is exactly how I feel.
The SoundCloud era changed everything. And gave some real voices a platform.
I totally agree with you about the early emo bands. They were ok. But nothing like how it was blended with the poetry of rap.
Emo and rap just cried to be combined, and I would have never thought it when I was younger.
My choice is Eminem and in a weird way -his very early stuff- was not so much gangster but emo”esk” with passion- and that almost “cry for help” delivery
Oh yeah I listened to almost everything just spewed a few names that came to mind, early em when he was slim shady still was great, as a rap fan the most rappers would do was say they were suicidal but when the SoundCloud era came you really had people describing these intense emotions in a way that wasn’t possible in the rock format
Reading this post really makes me appreciate the era I was born in. We really got lucky with the artists popping up being the ages we were. Vulnerable music such as peeps, juice WRLD, xxx, etc is all I’ve ever known growing up.
To clarify when I mean all I knew, I mean it’s all I ever listened to when I was 16-19
Yeah we had vulnerable music but none to the quality of what was coming out in the SoundCloud era, but at the same time we had the mixtape era but that was for mostly rap fans
I felt the same things Peep was going through. I am not an addict, nor do I use drugs, but I could relate to most things he said. Especially Lil Peep Part One was what hit right home. 2016 Peep was so raw, it feels so organic. His music definitely helped me heal
I'm 30 now and peep has been my favourite artist for a few years. When I was in high school it was the emo band Brand New. Peep samples one of their songs for the Brightside.
I was 15 and just changed schools. I wasn’t getting along with my new classmates at all.
A girl I talked to introduced me to Peeps music, I believe it was Benz Truck. It was just a song in my playlist until one night when I felt lonely and very down. That’s when I started listening to EVERY Gus song I could find. Added 20+ song. From that night he was the only one I listened to and the reason I was always wearing my headphones.
He also motivated me to start making music myself - I just wanted share my thought with the world and it was possible thanks to SoundCloud. Obviously, it was shit when I started, but I kept improving and make music for a living now.
Peep has changed me a lot as a person as well. Every time I watch the documentary it makes me realise that I just have to keep pushing and give 0 fucks about what other people think.
The biggest influence of my life.
🖤✝️
For me, Silverstein was and still is the band that came to mind.Their Rescue album really tackled a lot of topics I was struggling with, alcohol and drug use amongst myself and my friends. Loss and grief, survivors guilt, and because I was raised in a religious home it also addressed the struggle I was having spiritually. I don't identify as Christian but I certainly was and am still asking God wtf why.
Although I’m only 20 I feel like people in your generation possibly gravitated towards morrissey and the smiths. I feel like the smiths echo the same type of message lil peep does. Granted both artists are different in their respective ways. But the same aswell as they both speak about self loathing, love, relationships with other people.
As a teen experiencing Peep, it had a heavy influence me when i first discovered him. He is basically the only artist i’ve been listening to for more than 7 years. Imo the soundcloud era is so unique, like it sorta changed everything.
I wasn't there for the era (since I was these teens at the time in question) but I have a feeling that I would have blended with Three Days Grace if I was older. I also feel the same way about Kurt Cobain. I'd also like to add Seether and Rise Against and System Of A Down. Just off the top thinking about it. I feel like I would've definitely blended with these bands if I was around for the Era, I can still appreciate it but not the same as being a teen at that time. So for newer generation which I was apart and there for, I always had a connection to XXXTENTACION, Lil Skies more rare stuff at the time and Lil Uzi Vert for some reason like his old mixtapes along with Trippie Redds old mixtapes. Then there's also a most definite connection to 6 Doggs. (Just Off The Top) There was really many more and too many at the same time just popping in the underground scene to remember them all but those are the first ones to come to mind.
I hate myself for not knowing him when he was alive. I was 18 when he passed . People around me listened to him and I remember everyone I knew at the time being devastated. I'm usually late to the party I basically live under a rock. That day it was all over TVs and the moment I first saw a photo of him and heard his music It resonated with me .
Like many others I feel like I've got to know him and hear him only through headphones or online . I hope someday we will see him again 🖤
RIP Gus.
When I was like 16/17 I was listening to a lot of atmosphere and aesop rock. And I think that slug from atmosphere is an incredible MC and lyricist. Some of the stuff that both him and aesop talked about could definitely be compared to the things that peep talked about. Even if they did it in a more lyrically complex way. And then in 2016 I got into pro era and flatbush zombies. And I think some of the deep emotional things that capital steez and FBZ were talking about could be similar to things peep talked about too. RIP Peep and Steez.
And like others mentioned Mac Miller was a big part of my teen years. And when he started making more thoughtful music like thoughts from a balcony and I am who I am, it showed this shift from his upbeat party bro music to some really dark/deep and interesting music that he was making. I love both Mac eras too though.
i was in middle school when my friend showed me him in 2016. i love lil peep. i dont listen to him as much i barely turn him on anymore cuz he was all i listened to in some of the worst moments in my life, so i cant really listen to him without being horribly depressed. i think the whole hellboy album was my middle school soundtrack. but nose ring is the one.
for sure Yeat with his religious views aligning with my old ones and loving ur self so much that u started to not even care ab anything (yeat - my self )

Get out of my HEAD!!! Haha!
SoundCloud peep is superior. All the songs you can’t find on Spotify or Apple Music are GEMS

His music helped me through feeling suicidal and depressed. And his music in general is just the type of music I like.
A little deep, and you don’t need to answer but: Is feeling like you were not alone play a part in healing from his music?
For me yes, felt like I had someone to relate to

I appreciate you for being open. Don’t stop healing friend ✊🏼
I'm doing better than ever gladly. I started to turn my life round 180 and Peep sure shit helped me. Thank you
This is real.

Can I ask where u live/lived when this was the band you would choose? (I’m from, and live in the same town they are from)
I'm from and have never left Calgary, Alberta 🇨🇦 and that's pretty cool that you are from the same hometown!
intervention is the best song on that album
It's definitely one of my top 10 songs of all time. The part where he sings "I'm afraid I'll never be okay" gets me every time
He was and still is “The Artist” for me. Someone who is so unapologetically themself. He inspires me. Came across him when I was 25.
Radiohead I guess, got to fistbump Thom Yorke in my lifetime which was rad. Helped me through despair and loss
Sadistik
Sadistik is in a league of his own.
