Fucking slaps, Stromae is a legend for me, I remember being like 9 or 10 and vibing and dancing to his music first the Cheese álbum and then Racine Carré
Fucking amazing that's what he is
Dont think its quite right, it really seems to be just about an absent father, but Stromae's own father died during the rwandan genocide, which I assume was a very big inspiration
>about the father having been in a war and coming back scarred and hollow.
Where did you get that from? The lyrics only suggest this to be about a shit ass absent father, don't they?
The lyrics just suggest the father's gone, Stromae has explained it's that the dad died in the Rwandan genocide, hence the "Where are you father?" of the song. Not that it can be figured out from lyrics alone, just a bit of trivia.
(My bad tho, not like this is the same description I gave before, but hey.)
Well thanks, you perfectly answered my question.
I was wondering if you "deduced" that from the lyrics, but you heard an interviews of Stromae explaining the song's lyrics' background which perfectly makes sense.
Ah, ok. I remember my cousin showing it to me a few years ago but it was in French and so she sort of roughly translated/narrated the events to me as they unfolded and that was kind of the jist of how she explained it, but I didn't catch the details since I don't know French :/
It's from the child's perspective about his absent father, his questioning it all, his anger and desparation and his mother's efforts to somehow explain it all and soothe him in his grief and frustration. No war story.
Yeah that's it! Only saw it a couple times a few years ago and couldn't remember the name, but the imagery and color palette are so distinct and memorable - like someone took the Wes Anderson pastel motif and cranked up the saturation.
Cute. I don't think i danced to it but we had to translate it in french class. Though that might have been a couple years after it came out, i'm not sure. This song contains memories
Isn't this from the papaoutai music video?
Hence the title
Ye
I KNEW IT
Grove Street...home, at least it was before I fucked everything up.

Ahh, nostalgia. I don’t understand his songs for shit, but the emotions are conveyed so damn well...
His music is really good when you understand French. Also, it’s a nice way to practice my French.
Listen to his new album if you haven't yet! L'Enfer is a highlight
Mauvaise journée gang
Mon amour gang
Un autre???
My french teacher used him to help us get into learning the language. I couldn't stop humming the songs after class.
What song? It's just a still image on my phone.

[Welp, time to listen to it again!](https://youtu.be/oiKj0Z_Xnjc)
Tout le monde sait comment on fait des bébés, mais personne sait comment on fait des papas!
Monsieur, je-sais-tout en aurait hérité, c’est ça
Faut le sucer de son pouce ou quoi?
Don't worry he went to buy some milk, he will come back
thats what she (mom) said
Nah, mom said he's off working. She says working is good. Far better than being in bad company. Ain't that right?
It’s been a yeardaddy
Isn't this from a music video about being a terrible father and destroying your child's soul?
Yes it's Papaoutai by Stromae, a riff on "Papa où t'es?" which is an informal way of saying "Dad where are you".
I believe it's Papaoutai by Stromae, which was more about the father having been in a war and coming back scarred and hollow.
> which was more about the father having been in a war and coming back scarred and hollow. I didn't catch *that* subtext at all.
Dont think its quite right, it really seems to be just about an absent father, but Stromae's own father died during the rwandan genocide, which I assume was a very big inspiration
His father died in the Hutu Rwandan massacre.
>about the father having been in a war and coming back scarred and hollow. Where did you get that from? The lyrics only suggest this to be about a shit ass absent father, don't they?

His dad was in the Rwandan genocide. He never came back. :/

I’ve always been impressed with that kid’s moves and emoting. I hope he’s still dancing now that he’s grown up.
I think so, my french teacher played it almost every morning for the 2 years I had her
Damn, teacher was really going through it, huh?
Trauma that slaps, means that, happy or sad, it's always a good time to play it.
Im convinced no one knows what liminal space actualy is and they just post random pictures lmao
At this point it's just pictures that are vaguely uncanny
The contrast between the size of the cars and the size of the houses makes me uncomfortable for some reason
It does look how a child might draw things.
french class flashbacks
Fromage 🧀

Be careful with that sand street. The USPS truck could get stuck.
I love having a garage that I can’t even park in because I can’t open the car doors to get out
Really good song by a cool guy and a great video. The entire video is liminal

Love the Isetta and the Fiats
Despite its catchy nature this is one of the most heart breaking songs I’ve ever heard in the mainstream.
