If you have task rabbit available in your area you could hire someone to only help for an hour or two. I did this once and it was highly worth it. We were much more productive as a team and I was able to ask them to complete specific tasks/help with certain items to ensure I had the help I’d need. It wasn’t cost prohibitive.

canolafly

Stealing this idea for myself, thank you!

DocYoctopus

All yours! I wish you success. I have used TR for a number of things over the years and always been at least satisfied. I live in a major US metro area and there are always a lot of taskers with a lot of reviews. I will add I'm not impressed with the Task Rabbit fee. It seems excessive and they break it down by including a fee for allegedly vetting the safety/background of the tasker. I hope they do. And I guess I could be convinced the fee is OK thanks to the convenience of not having to do anything outside of the platform/app to find and communicate with someone. I think if you are a first time user you might be able to find a code for a discount. In the situation I used TR for movers I was moving across a parking lot in the same apartment complex but to a bigger unit. I had to go down 3 flights of stairs across the parking lot, then up 3 flights of stairs. I set all the heavy furniture up to be moved first and had the tasker help. We ended up finishing much more than I'd even hoped for in the 2 or 3 hours I'd asked for. I've also used TR for hanging a TV, hanging blinds that I'd ordered online, organizing a couple rooms of my house, and some general house cleaning. I think I'm going to wrack my brain for something I can pay someone to do right now to make life better :)

Depending on how tall you are and where you are moving it from its probably feasible for one person to move it. Mattresses aren't that heavy, the biggest issue is how unwieldy they are, maneuvering them around stairs can be pretty challenging due to the size. Also, your only real option will be to push/pull the mattress around, so you'll need some pretty serious protection in order to not damage it; especially when you have to pick it up to load it into the truck. I've done it before but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.

spread_the_cheese

If you can, hiring movers is always worth it in my book. Gets done faster and saves you the wear and tear.

Turbulent-Bee-1584

I just moved a queen bed from my first floor up to the second floor by myself, so it really just depends. Biggest problem for me was the mattress kept folding. For a king I'd definitely wrap some straps around it to have something to get a good grip on.

reincarnatedteenager

when I moved I purchased the Rhino Cart All Terrain Mover - you can move a washing machine with it - and I also purchased a hand truck called Platform truck with 440lb capacity. My sister and BIL flew in to help me move in and they were perfect so we could do everything without movers. Now, a few months later, I confidently move a lot of things around on my own, including heavy deliveries that are left on my doorstep (I am 5'6" and have the strength of, well a middle-aged chick). I do have a single story home, so moving up and down stairs would be the unfun part for you.

marceline_lime

Fold it in half and secure it with ratchet straps. It’ll be a lot easier to move that way. I moved my queen down three flights of stairs this way. So yes, it is possible just use good form and be ready for a workout. Movers and friends are a luxury lol. https://preview.redd.it/0t3bfxcntu1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dcd46f448207d4cc15b2d0126f473b63f51df726

No-Shift2157

This was exactly what I came here hoping to see - an actual engineered solution. Fucking genius bro, I owe you one!

I’ve moved my entire apartment by myself in the past so it certainly can be done but it depends on so many things. I had a truck and was moving out of a main floor. The mattress I kind of “roll” it; I can’t think how to explain it. I stand it up then keep moving it from the long side to the short side. I could set one end on my tailgate and then push it into the truck. It takes time to move on your own but it is possible. I don’t lift things, I pick up one end, move it, then repeat, I.e. “walking” it out. It is slow going though. Last time I moved I hired someone from Task Rabbit to help

RaleighlovesMako6523

You need a friend or a moving company

NocoNicole

I’ve done it and it sucks. Easier if you have it bagged and have straps.

the_TAOest

The short answer: No.

Mysterious-Art8838

Just remember to pivot. PIVOT!

HonnyBrown

No

Maybe you could do a test run? See how difficult it is to move it from your bedroom to your front door by yourself and then decide if you think you’ll be able to handle it or if you should hire help. You’ll probably want to do it as soon as possible in case you do need to hire someone so you’ll have to move it back if you’re still staying in your current place, but better than spending money on movers that you really didn’t need or realizing you can’t do it alone but now it’s to late to get anyone in time. I’d also think about how you’re getting it from your place to the storage unit. Tossing it in the back of a truck? That could be a one person job. Strapping it to the top of a car? Maybe want some help (idk I’ve never strapped anything), but you might be able to ask a neighbor to help you for like 10 min. Moving sucks. Good luck!

RoseAlma

You could always just grab a nearby neighbor or their kid (so long as you don't get suspected of being weird - people are so touchy nowadays !!) to help you and offer them $20 or something.

post-nutclarence

I moved my cal king bed and frame by myself up some stairs to my second story apartment alone. It was a bitch and a half but I recommend tying some ropes or straps around it, makes it way easier to handle and grab onto.

RedwayBlue

Are there day laborers in your city? Go to Home Depot and give a guy $50 to help. If your town doesn’t have these guys waiting outside the hardware stores, look at Nextdoor app, Craigslist, or task rabbit.

Fuzzy-Zombie1446

Do you have any teenage neighbors? A pizza and $20 goes a long way...

gamiscott

I have a king size and my initial thought is that you’ll need help but seeing your edit, that might be doable alone. Have a dolly and gloves on for extra grip. It would absolutely be easy and take less time with one more person but if you’re willing to take your time, it could work.

Eiffel-Tower777

I'm over putting my body through all this crap. I would hire an affordable mover.

Reasonable-Age-6837

Slide it across the floor to an other room? yeah... Load it into a vehicle and drive somewhere to unload? probably not.

RevDrucifer

Hahahahah you’ll most certainly drag it a few feet before it topples over on you and/or knocks everything else down in its path. You can most likely do it, but by the time you’re done you’ll most likely wish you hired someone!

Jaded_Fisherman_7085

Hire a person for one hour. ( not a moving company ) it will save back health

Purple-Sprinkles-792

Hiring a mover vs risking hurting yourself. No brainer to me if you can afford it. If moving to storage and not your new home, what about hiring a day laborer or homeless person instead of pro mover?

THE_wendybabendy

Check Uhaul online to see if they have any local small-time movers in your area. I did this with some salon equipment I needed to move and it was AWESOME! They did an amazing job and it wasn't horribly expensive either.

FeathersOfJade

Just flipping my king size mattress also is a huge pita! Good luck!

Bitter-Compote-3016

I moved last year and drove up the moving truck by myself at like 3am, and really wanted to sleep on my bed. It's a cal king tempurpedic. It took me probably 10 minutes of grunting and flopping that thing around to get it inside, but I got to sleep on my bed that night.

Other_Register_5459

A flat furniture dolly or two would help so you don’t have to drag it on the ground.

Dry-Crab7998

Yes you can, but get a cover for it. It's so easy to accidentally bump a corner against a wall or drag an edge on the floor. A plastic cover is good if it's raining when you move. Also, in storage keep the mattress up high - on top of a chest of drawers or something. Those places are full of mice! Make sure your sofa is completely clear of crumbs.

Constant_Will362

Maybe if you are 7 foot 3 and you are solid muscle. Don't try it. You are going to over-exert yourself and cause a hernia or you could fall on your skull. You need at least 3 men to do it.

Tricky-Pangolin158

I would be really careful… I’ve tried doing that and honestly, you’re back yourself into a corner and fall on the floor… You would have to clear the room of any access furniture because that’s a whole big deal to move around….,

turtlewhale42

I'm not sure if anyone said this yet but try to see if you can use a vacuum sealed bag! My friend did this with her queen size mattress when she moved cross country and it fit right in her sedan. They have mattress size vacuum bags and you make the mattress super flat until it can roll up and boom. Much easier for us to take down the stairs.

CardiologistSweet343

Is it one of the traditional hard mattresses that holds its shape when you move it? Or is it one of those floppy phone ones that does not hold shape?

LavishnessRare7420

I hurt my back very badly trying this. I’m a 5’6” F.

One_Breakfast6153

I had to hire movers and my bed is a queen.
