Honestly all that sounds fair enough. Drone shows could be cool if they had some narrative or drama like a shadow play in the sky, with music synced up.
Otherwise yeah, they'll never come close to the thrill of a thumping fireworks finale you feel in your chest.
At first I did not care for drones that much either, but then Disney came out with theirs at their shopping mall in Florida and that shit bangs. If you love or hate Disney, you have to admit that [this shit bangs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKjvPKoSAbk)
Check out Bjork's 2023 coachella show. It's looser and more esoteric, but shows the potential of drones in performance
https://www.tiktok.com/@ozkrjunglist/video/7226936864031182085
They still do 20 min fireworks every night in each of their parks. This drone show is 10 min. Universal Orlando also has a drone show they’ll be debuting I believe in time for Horror Nights starting up in August
Today's drone shows are what we (in entertainment) call spectacles. And a show with LEDs is no more than a PowerPoint slideshow. Cool 1st time, boring afterwards. Blinky lights only go so far. As in the above post, Disney's getting better with storyline/kinetics, and Intel (now NovaSky) better at just making it a real 2d video screen, not dot matrix. Most of us in the biz knew combining fireworks with drones (not drones and separate fireworks) really does the job right. Fyi, all TOO expensive...
Yeah, the LA show looked like a carnival afterthought. HansenDam (which is a sky elements production to a post below) was more pleasing.
I moved to West Adams a couple years ago but was out of town for my first fourth of July.
I knew it was a thing here, we hear fireworks almost daily, but did not expect the sheer magnitude and volume of so many.
Went through the 6th street bridge. Nice and dark and there were droves of people parked watching all the fireworks 360 views. We just passed through on a detour coming back from a BBQ in Ontario.
No USA flag imagery from the drones was kind of a glaring omission. Also no Star Spangled Banner or America The Beautiful songs playing. It was kind of a strange collection of non sense imagery strung together, given the theme of the night is so clear.
No sky writing either. I would have thought they’d at least write ‘Happy 4th’ or ‘USA’ or ‘Go Dodgers’ or anything. Just do some stuff that fireworks can’t do and make it red white and blue themed. Instead we get: book, tree, robot, skyline that was not LA, close book.
The American flag has somehow become a political wedge issue these days.

i did hear plenty of “viva mexico” chants from the musicians on one of the stages though. i get it, lots of Mexicans/Mexican Americans live in LA…but its Americas birthday dude, have some respect. no one is shouting “Viva USA” on Mexican Independence Day celebrations ive seen.
pros and cons - I can see it not be for everyone and it will take a lot to convert. drones is still new and not the greatest in batteries for long term show - from what I'm told. idk who funds for the city, but I think it depends who produces it? the one in redondo was cute from last year - no music but I can see them adding on to it.
watched the fireworks in South bay, & fireworks are always nice and all, but honestly, it polluted the area so bad and it was such a difference in air quality. It really makes me not care for fireworks as much if we have drones. it just needs to be refined - there's a lot of potential in drone displays.
music festivals have been doing a great job with drones instead of fireworks lately. the one I went to recently was awesome and showed what more you can do with it. I think it depends on who's willing to invest in it. that Disney drone show looked doped.
Drone show technology is new, evolving, and expensive. Requires knowledgeable drone techs, small light but powerful batteries, a wide open area for if something happens to any of the drones, custom built expensive tracking software…. Etc etc.
Universal Hollywood has been experimenting with it for their summer nighttime Harry potter show and it’s really cool to see though it is also short.
Disney world has a cool drone show and I wouldn’t be surprised if land was going to start getting some things too soon.
They’re going to be the big players in getting this technology setup with their night time spectaculars.
I’ve been wanting to see a drone show, if nothing else, to see what they are like (every video I’ve seen has been sped up).
Ended up going to the Santa Clarita fireworks show. Easy to get in and out and you (almost) sit right under them. Ears were ringing.
I just got back from Laguna Beach where they were doing a drone show as well. It wasn’t… great. Definitely going to a place that has fireworks next year.
I was also at Grand Park and yeah, the drone show was massively disappointing.
There was zero indication of where it would be beforehand, and when it started people were scrambling to get a view behind them. It was basically just static images with some pulsing lights, nothing like the much more extensive and dynamic drone shows that are out there. Drone shows can be great but this one was like a 2/10.
On the way out we went through Chinatown and there were a shitload of fireworks going off in view of the Spring St. bridge past LA State Historic Park, to the point where people were pulled over to watch it all. We may just go there next year instead, heh
Did we have music playing in sync with the drones? I wasnt near enough main stage but close enough to see the drones without obstruction and didnt hesr anything
The inherent problems are that no matter what, the city won't have Disney money and a 1 off show is far more expensive than a repeated show.
The Disney drones are:
1. Much larger to accommodate more battery life .
2. On a rotation (there are countless spares) so grounding 10 isn't an issue.
3. Released from a large "not accessable to the public" area such that their size and quantity isn't an issue.
Compare that to a local show and the quickest issue you'll find is the vast number of vehicles it would take to transport that many drones of that size.
It was free and there were plenty of families that this experience made happy. Can we all just appreciate that instead of nitpicking the bad things in an attempt to bring community together in a free event? Jeez.
Nitpicking on things about the main event that don't matter, lol. People had fun and they're the ones who did didn't give a damn about these meaningless issues you had with the event. Life's easier when you're not casting judgement on others and when you're not looking for small shit to complain about, especially when they're this pointless.
Your downvotes and people's responses on this thread says otherwise. Your attempt to gaslight me into thinking I'm there only one or few with this issue
"People had fun and they're the ones who did didn't give a damn about these meaningless issues you had with the event"
Comments on this thread and stuff I overheard there and the disappointment I saw on people's faces suggest otherwise. But you keep being delusional
Relax dude. I also saw people there who were absolutely fine and just happy to be there. Again, it was a free event. To many, such an event/experience is a rare opportunity to have for free. All im saying is that, even if it was just one person, maybe just a kid, that smiled at the drones, or anything else you pointed out was flawed, can't we just be cool with that? If not, I guess maybe we can just both agree that your instinct is to pinpoint negative outcomes instead of finding joy in things. So much so that you just had to write your analysis/critique on Reddit for.

Drones are all about kill and commerce. Too bad they didn't showcase killing native animals or dropping candy off to the kiddies. Don't fool yourselves.
Honestly all that sounds fair enough. Drone shows could be cool if they had some narrative or drama like a shadow play in the sky, with music synced up. Otherwise yeah, they'll never come close to the thrill of a thumping fireworks finale you feel in your chest.
And some bass to that music. If we doing drone shows, lets go all in and start taking inspiration from raves
For sure, gotta get the people going!
No one knows what it means, but it's provocative
I’ve been waiting for some EDM DJ to put all this together in a live show.

Holy shit. I had no idea drone shows had that kind of potential, and to think Disney does that show on a nightly basis?! Thanks for sharing.

Whoa!!! What an incredible drone show!!! I’ll show my husband tomorrow, he’ll want go! Thank you!

Here in south LA the neighbor is putting a better firework show than the city lol
I moved to West Adams a couple years ago but was out of town for my first fourth of July. I knew it was a thing here, we hear fireworks almost daily, but did not expect the sheer magnitude and volume of so many.
That checks!!😂
Yup. Still going strong ! Biggest fireworks I’ve seen so far .
Went through the 6th street bridge. Nice and dark and there were droves of people parked watching all the fireworks 360 views. We just passed through on a detour coming back from a BBQ in Ontario.
We saw a portion of the drones and we came off the bridge.
Could have

I went last year, it was so underwhelming I skipped it this year. 👎
Same here.

I don’t know who did the one in Grand Park tonight, but Sky Elements does great drone shows.

2/10? What is a 1/10 then?
Your comment
got em
It’s just your opinion… to me it was great
drone shows in general or the grand park one? cause it can't be what we saw in grand park
Should see the ones in China, insane
4th of July in China? Sounds RAD!
I was underwhelmed with the Dio hologram at the Wiltern some years ago.
All true but it was still much better than last year's which had no music lmfao
Did we have music playing in sync with the drones? I wasnt near enough main stage but close enough to see the drones without obstruction and didnt hesr anything
I was up by the splash pad and there was some kind of music going with it?
Was there or was there not? Cause you have a question mark at the end of tour statement
I mean I thought it was intentional.
Ok maybe i was too far away from the stage. I was at the street under it though
What time was this at? We watched from my friends roof for a good 3 hours but didn’t see anything.
9pm, but it was so low that I wouldnt be surprise that you didnt see anything

I don't think you know how to spot actual gaslighting, but sure, because reddit downvotes determine truth. Got ya.

Bro you having a stroke?
What a disappointing reply that that's your go to when you've got nothing else. Hope you get to see the light in things some day.
Bro I see both pros and cons. The cons here outweigh the pros. Your previous response was a whole lot of nothing
Life’s easier when you don’t have a conniption every time someone has a critique about something.
I agree. That's why I don't do it every time. ;)
