Pretty much everything on Take No Prisoners, but to pick only one, this one is pretty good:
“Don’t you hate it, those Academy awards man? Here’s fucken Barbra Streisand…’I wanna thank all the little people…there’s too many little people I can’t get their names’. Fuck her and the little people, I don’t like big people…fuck short people and tall people I like middle people. People from Wyoming. You ever meet somebody from Wyoming? Not me.”
So many favorites, but this one from “Trade In” is speaking to me now:
“He actually was murdered, I had taken him apart
But when I put him back together, I couldn't find his heart
It was resting underneath a chair, in a bed of bright tin foil
If I pulled back the flaps, I could still see it beat, I could still hear his voice uncoil”
"You know some people got no choice and they can never find a voice to talk with that they can even call their own, so the first thing that they see that allows them the right to be, why they follow it. You know what that's called?
Bad luck."
For some reason the fourth verse of Some Kinda Love has always been my favorite. Get it stuck in my head all the time.
“Put jelly on your shoulder, let us do what you fear most/
That from which you recoil but which still makes your eyes moist/
Put jelly on your shoulder, baby, lie down upon the carpet/
Between thought and expression let us now kiss the culprit”
Zero abstraction of what it’s literally about but still manages to work in a bunch of really clever little ideas. That’s great songwriting.
“Manhattan's sinking like a rock, into the filthy Hudson, what a shock
They wrote a book about it, they said it was like Ancient Rome.
The perfume burned his eyes, holding tightly to her thighs
and something flickered for a minute and then it vanished and was gone”
when you've done so much meth the paranoia has almost completely taken control and it's coming out in your sweat
possibly my favorite lou song, and definitely my favorite guitar solo in his entire catalogue, Quinn was on fire that entire album
Who tightened this mic stand? Godzilla? I either need to grow an inch or get a boyfriend
GET A WHAT?
A boyfriend - can't you fuckin hear, what's wrong widjoo?
You know, some people got no choice
And they can never find a voice
To talk with that they can even call their own
So the first thing that they see
That allows them the right to be
Why they follow it
You know, it's called bad luck
Would you pull me up
Would you drop the mental bullet
Would you pull me by the arm up
Would you still kiss my lips
Hiccup, the dream is over
Get the coffee, turn the lights on
Say hello to junior dad
The greatest disappointment
Age withered him and changed him
Into junior dad
Psychic savagery
I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly
Over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I'm older
What do you think I'd see
If I could walk away from me?
“They say he never had an enemy …
His was a greatness to behold.”
“And I think suddenly of you. And blink my eyes in fright. And rush off to the home of the brave. And here’s to the home of the brave. The home of the brave.”
I don't know just what it's all about
But put on your red pajamas and find out
Really, though, all of "Some Kinda Love." Wry, playful, poetic, life-enhancing.
I love women, I think they're great
They're a solace to a world in a terrible state
They're a balm for the eye and a blessing for the soul
What a nightmare in this world to have no women
There’s a bit of magic in everything, and some loss to even things out.
This is definitely one of his best ever. That line never fails to pack a punch.

But why don't you grab your old lady by the feet And just lay her out In the darkest street And by morning she's just another hit and run
Now me, I’ve tried a million tricks; to make life hold, to make it fix.
“So long world, you play too rough” It always seems to float into my head when I want to get away from it all.
