What kind of files did you get? I tried going the cheap route first (using some $5 mini files from Harbor Freight), but went poorly. So I finally ended up buying a set from Music Nomad and I love them.
I went with Japanese Hiroshima diamond files.
I did a course on guitar setups and fret redress/crown about 6 weeks back.
The course was not cheap, but I took in my favourite guitars, one of which I thought was perfect and after having the nut refilled and the frets redressed (neither of which I thought were necessary) the difference was literally night and day. These guitars are now incredible.
The fella who taught me had been doing it for more than 30 years across 5 countries. I’ve got nearly 30 years of playing under my belt and had plenty of setups and nut’s done over that time.
This guy was a master. I have never played anything like the guitars we worked on.
He said to start with a diamond file and to put any spare cash into quality tools. Specifically Japanese wherever possible.
So I put everything I could into the tools to do those jobs properly. I spent a grand. Money well spent.
Wow, that’s impressive. The Japanese are known for making exceptional steel cutting instruments, going all the way back to their centuries old history of sword and knife making. Would love to see a photo of you tools some time.
Very cool.
Cheap throwaway Japanese tools sadly make mid grade/nice tools look like garbage.
I have some Japanese pull saws and recently found out your supposed to throw them out after about 6 months of regular use and just get new ones 🙃.
What tools did you use? I need to cut one, maybe two. I don't want to spend so much on files though. Even taking two into a shop would still be cheaper than buying the hardware. I saw somebody was making files from feeler gauges on the cheap. Any advice? There are plenty of cheap kits on Amazon, I suppose maybe they will last a couple of usages.
Some measuring, a sanding block and Lots of sanding paper up to polishing grits could make this perfect. It does look like the low e is super low, and some of the others are a bit high.
Hope you learned something. They are simple things but very difficult to make. Is there buzzing cause the heights arent consistent on the first fret
Its unrefined too. Thats not a finished nut by any standard. Thats a test. Luckily you left enough material to refine it!
You can make my bone nut... I'll see myself out
Isn't it No Nut November?
Damn. This is what I should have said. Well played
Not gonna lie: I came here for that joke.
😂
Looks great!
Thank you!
Great? No. Competent yes. It terrible but the spacing is competent
This comment reeks of self consciousness
Its got 80 grit sanding lines he buffed lol. Be honest
lol. Can we see your perfect example?
Sure. Ill send some photos of the nuts ive made. But i have to send them over message
Nice work! I get my files next week and am looking forward to learning

Yes that guy that makes the sheers for bonsai
That’s bone. Impressive, very nice. Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?
Top work! Did you purchase a blank or raid the bitchers shop for it?

Aren't DGB&E set too deep down in the nut? I though you only wanted about half the string sitting below the top of the nut.
That’s usually for the wound strings
Sweet!
Looks good 👍🏾 Good job 👍🏾 👍🏾
