Yes, yes they were. And I wouldn't have been interested in being a beta tester for them either back then.
That said, tooenjoy's website presents like a fly by night knock off company.
Agree. I've had both good and bad experiences with unknown brands/products. Currently have a Yakima. At a glance, I wouldn't trust this product, but I have to admit it does make me a little curious about the quality.
For sure. I typically use them as one factor among several. Surprisingly, ReviewMeta only shows 6% as being "unnatural" for the other product sold by this company.
I suppose it depends on the level of risk. Being \~80% cheaper, is it 80% shittier? 20%? I don't think I'd be brave enough to roll the dice (esp if I had $10K worth of bikes, or even $5K for that matter), but I am curious about the quality.
Anecdotally, I saw a guy at the trailhead using a Swagman hitch rack. He'd owned it for 7 years, driven 1000s of miles with it, and had no issues. However, peace of mind is for sure worth a premium.
I use a 1Up because I want to be able to keep the rack on the back of my Nissan Rogue 24x7 and still be able to get in and out of the cargo area without having to touch the rack. Since 95% of the time I have a single bike on my rack, the 1Up is a perfect solution. I've had it almost 10 years and have had zero issues with it even after backing into someone with a bike on it.
I know it was not the cheapest rack, the functionality and peace of mind are second to none. If I had to cut corners there are plenty of other places where I would spend less, but the rack, for the amount of use that it gets, was a massive bargain. When I look at the long-term cost and the total value, it was cheap.
I wouldn't call it a clone nor a knockoff. It's just something different that happens to be black and red.
To me it looks like just another take on the 1Up/Saris/Quickr style of holding both wheels at a time.
I am a buy one cry once type. I have had my 1up rack for about eight years and have no issues at all. It is a well built piece of kit that fits my chonky 27.5 plus full sus fun machine and my felt TT bike without issue.
1up has only been around since 2001. I’m sure the elements of “platform bike rack” existed before then. I personally have no reason to go to Thule or 1up when Yakima is in my hood.
My bikes are worth more than to trust them on some random company that no one has ever heard of.
At one point oneup was just some random company that no one had ever heard of.

I have definitely gone with unknown companies for things as well, but not when it comes to trusting 10k+ worth of bikes attached to a car.
Amazon reviews are extremely unreliable

For the curious, a DNS name lookup for the site returns an A record for an IP in Beijing China. I wouldn't trust any of the reviews. YMMV
Saving $200 by risking $10,000 worth of bikes sounds like a bad trade off.

Come on, you’d buy a rack from a company that didn’t even have a car to mount the rack on for photos?
Solid point haha

Plus it's made in America and you can buy accessories or parts as needed, talk to a human on the phone etc.
This is perhaps one of the most important value props IMO.
This isn't even close to a knockoff. It's a bike rack. 1up didn't invent bike racks.
No, not a copy paste. Perhaps inspired?

What? I own a 1up, and extensions. I've stopped using it due to rampant 1up theft at the moment in the larger Bay area.
It looks more like a saris than 1up...
Even Thule ripped off 1Up. https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/hitch-bike-racks/thule-helium-platform-xt-2-_-904011
It's a pretty brilliant design!
Yeah. Gotta stick with the OG. People are poaching the design but have no improvements.

The designer of 1Up racks [https://quikrstuff.com/](https://quikrstuff.com/)
It's heavier, bulkier and puts more torque on the hitch..oh and it's longer.
