Totally agree.

I don't mind hacking and slashing, but too many games focus on that and that alone, you're right. This is why I like games like CLOK. Sure, it's a bit grindy, but it's more than just killing monsters and collecting treasure.

Zaguriasu

Jirato here - I'd like to expand on crafting and professions in CLOK to give people plenty of fun options instead of just regular hack and slash. My vision is yo have the combat portions of CLOK entirely optional. If you have any suggestions on additional crafting and profession stuff you'd like to see, or tweaks to existing systems, feel free to share them on our BBS.

Discworld, EmpireMUD and Lost Souls can be great routine breakers!

[EmpireMUD!](http://empiremud.net). Build your own empire, have working NPCs!. Chop trees in world: your changes are reflected in a dynamic live map!. You can craft, dig trenches to make lakes, plant food and magic herbs, learn the ancient powers of Druidry or the venerable High Sorcery, or instead choose to specialize in Surviving. Perhaps you may choose to become a Vampire!. Craft armors and more! Build everything, up to pyramids! Customize their room desc! Sail around in ships! Ride pets and become faster (or swim or even fly)!. A total free, open world! In another time I would have recommended Wayfar1444. Sadly its owner closed it down because of unknown reasons. In that MOO (it was very mudlike though) you were a colonist sent to an alien world. It was incredible, search it!

Middle-Earth.us has a craaazy detailed crafting system. The orc side of it could use more love though.

Reiloth

Do you mind RP or care about setting (fantasy/post-apoc/etc)?

Moon_Dew

I don't mind.

Might be worth checking out HarshlandsMUD. It's mainly PvE focused, though PvP is a possibility (and permadeath is a real thing). www.harshlands.net Fantasy genre, bit of a twist -- No magic really, mostly 'religion magic' which could be considered the same thing, except culture/documentation allows it. I really love the crafting system of this game. It's verbose, fun to use, has sort of fractal branching, so not every crafter is exactly the same 100% of the time. The profession system is fun, if limiting, and provides you with a backstory and flavor as you pursue your craft. You can buy a house straight out of chargen, and plop it down in a 'residential area' pretty easily. You can later buy deeds when you have the money/social capital. Definitely worth checking out and seeing if it's your cup of tea.

Armageddon also has a fairly robust crafting system, but it features a very harsh and resource-scarce world where you'll likely need to join up with a powerful merchant house in order to have access to materials to craft with. Role-playing is a requirement and the world features permadeath.
