My thoughts I read an article that describes the scoring and I didn't understand a single thing. Like everything is in English but it's still gibberish to me.
My understanding is that it's basically baseball only you can hit the ball any direction and there's only two bases. You keep batting if you reach a base safely. Some other stuff too.
My thesis mentor in undergrad was a neuroscientist originally from Pakistan. Great guy, lovely family. I asked him once about crickett once and his eyes got wide as he smiled. Then he looked out the window of his office, a bit more melancholy, and said, "Oh, yes. I'm afraid we don't have time to talk about crickett today." Dude's sitting on some lore

“Doesn’t matter where you come from boy, it matters who you willing to fight for and where you hang your hat.
Those boys might have been born in Pakistan, but boy, they are MURICANS TO ME.”

Think of it in this way,
In baseball there are total 9 innings where a pitcher throws the ball and in those 9 innings you have two halves each for home team and visiting team.
Here, we have two permanent halves, in first half 1 team will play 20 innings (our overs) and score runs untill the all the overs are finished, or they get all out (called as wickets, if you can take 10 wickets, i.e. 10 different batters, then the half is finished)
Now in the next half, the opposing team will try to score runs in those 20 overs (or your innings)
you guys run between bases to score runs, we run between the two end of the pitch(the middle small part)
You guys can hit a home run and it counts as a run, we have two special variants as well,
if the ball is hit out of the boundary line, then we count it as 6 runs
And if the ball falls short of the boundary line, but still touches it, then we count it as 4 runs.
There are many more nuances, but these are the basics, do lemme know if you want to learn something more
Makes sense, that’s pretty crazy that one team plays all their spells in the first half and then the other. I played cricket a bit for fun with my kiwi family, it’s pretty big in New Zealand
I think by spell, they just meant in one sequence of bowls (or pitches). Spell is also referred to as a bowler’s time where they’ve been bowling regularly. A bowler can only bowl one over (6 bowls) at a time before alternating with someone else on their time but they’ll frequently switch back and forth between two bowlers before moving to a third (ABABACACDCDC for example). So this sequence of overs that A has thrown in a row is his spell before they can come back for another spell later
The guy you are replying to is not saying it is not a real sport, but that the United States does barely consider it a real sport, i.e. it is not very popular there.
Yup. All the people we have with natural athletic abilities first opt for football, basketball, baseball, hockey, swimming, soccer, a dozen other sports, and THEN whoever is left may choose cricket. All Pakistan really cares about is cricket. Imagine the absolute domination if we had specimen like Lebron James pick cricket as their sport.
You really think he would have become an equally talented cricketer if he had chosen the sport? I don't think so. Both are different things. It's like saying a giant cricketer like Virat Kohli would have become a giant baseball or Basketball player too.
Time to fill the other half with Pakistani-Americans and use this combined team of Indian-Americans and Pakistani-Americans to crush everyone and absolutely confuse the shit out of the world 🥳
I had a co-worker get me in to it. It's really where baseball came from.
Just like rugby is the father of American football... we love taking english games and 'Merica them up.
Might wanna check again, son.

3 years of residency is all that’s needed.
Anywho, I know the guy.
Fuck this country’s immigration system.
All the best athletes will generally go towards what makes them the most money, there isn’t much more (if any more) money in women’s basketball than soccer so you have more of the top female athletes going in that direction. USA men’s soccer will probably not be great until you start getting parity on salaries between MLS and MLB/NBA/NFL.

These guys have never played baseball. A lot of them are ex-cricketers in other countries and moved to America as immigrants before playing for us. The skills between the two sports aren’t as easily transferable as you think
A number of years ago, I was on the UT Arlington campus and saw a bunch of Indian guys playing cricket in the parking lot. As I walked over, a couple of their bigger guys eyed me suspiciously and met me part way (I guess a middle aged white dude was cause for concern). I said "I see you are playing cricket. I have never understood it. Can you explain it to me?" They broke into big grins, laughed and said "No we can't. " We had a lovely conversation after that while I watched my first pickup game of cricket.
Cricket is still almost exclusively an immigrant sport in USA. Until recently Lauderhill FL used to have the only dedicated cricket stadium in the country. Then last year an abandoned ballpark in Grand Prairie TX was permanently converted into a cricket stadium (that's where this game took place). Morrisville NC and Pearland TX also have good quality cricket grounds. For this world cup a temporary stadium has been built in Long Island which will be dismantled afterwards.
I only know enough about cricket to know that Pakistan is good, and we don't care about it as a sport. But we do like winners, and therefore this is the greatest thing to happen this week.
Wait we have a cricket team? Damn.
a pretty good one at that lmao, beating Pakistan is a very big deal lmao 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey, America wins. That’s all I know. 🦅
Muricaaaa 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It really is. Pakistan are one of the best teams in the world.
They watched a how to video on YouTube on their way over
Were ranked 19th I guess. Pakistan is always one of the best teams but it was a huge upset.
My thesis mentor in undergrad was a neuroscientist originally from Pakistan. Great guy, lovely family. I asked him once about crickett once and his eyes got wide as he smiled. I worked with a couple of guys from India in high school and they were OBSESSED with cricket. They’d always be watching on their phones.
It’s like having the Browns beat the Chiefs in the first round of the NFL playoffs
And Pakistan apparently is ranked 4th best in the world. US is not even in the top 20.
> US is not even in the top 20. Yeah after this tournament you're going to be higher than that mate!
Already moved up to 19
My thoughts exactly.
Yes made up of primarily Pakistani’s
> ~~Pakistani’s~~ ‘Muricans
A lot of people come to the states to be the best version of themselves. I don't think cricket is any different.
*Battle Cry of freedom plays in background* “Doesn’t matter where you come from boy, it matters who you willing to fight for and where you hang your hat. Those boys might have been born in Pakistan, but boy, they are MURICANS TO ME.” 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅
Have you seen the picture of the team. I’m sorry but those are some white looking Pakistanis
The comparison I've seen to this is if the Pakistan national cricket team beat the Lakers at basketball
WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER RAHHHHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
1 mile is 1.6kms! or in baseball terms, 144kmph is 90mph throw Raaaaaaah 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
WHAT THE FUCK IS AN OVER
As a bowler, in one spell, you can have 6 throws which is called as an over!
Follow-up question: what’s a spell? Is it like innings in baseball?

yaa, it's quite a big rivalry between Australia and New Zealand as well lmao

Lol, imagine losing at your thing to a country that barely considers it a real sport. 🦅
Muricaaa 🇺🇸
I don't even know the rules, lol.
It's the second most watched sport in the world after Soccer. Its most definitely are real sport lol.
The guy you are replying to is not saying it is not a real sport, but that the United States does barely consider it a real sport, i.e. it is not very popular there.

I got that. Maybe it came out weird.
And America barely considers that to be a sport too lol that's just a things kindergartners play before joining "real" sports.
lol such a funny analogy and very true.
Diversity is our strength 🦅
Half the team are Indian Americans, who channelled their ancestors’ spite to win against Pakistan lol
Time to fill the other half with Pakistani-Americans and use this combined team of Indian-Americans and Pakistani-Americans to crush everyone and absolutely confuse the shit out of the world 🥳
Don't forget to toss in a few Bangladeshi Americans for extra confusion
And one Irish for luck!
That would be hella American honestly
Based
You can’t beat America We are everyone
I never watch cricket, but it was nice to say “idk what’s going on, but we’re winning”
I had a co-worker get me in to it. It's really where baseball came from. Just like rugby is the father of American football... we love taking english games and 'Merica them up.
Yeah, but why can’t we field a decent soccer team
Our best player today is currently a software engineer at Oracle.
And probably rotting on an H1B visa.
That’s not how national teams work
Might wanna check again, son. https://emergingcricket.com/opinion/of-eligibility-and-expats/ 3 years of residency is all that’s needed. Anywho, I know the guy. Fuck this country’s immigration system.
Wait, you can not be a citizen and play for the US team?? That’s crazy
I was stuck at work and couldn’t watch, but my cube mate (huge cricket fan) was keeping us all updated. This is huge; Pakistan is *very* good.
Historically, yes. But the current team (and in the last decade) is hot garbage. But they still should've beaten the US team easily.
yes, it's a Major Upset!!!!
It was a thriller!!
Muricaaaa 🇺🇸 but by God, that was a terrible over by Amir
Yeah 7 extras in an over that too in a super over is a crime
Sorry, it’s called baseball now
Moose out front shoulda told ya.
TIL the US has a cricket team 🤷🏼♂️.
And our cricket team is actually good. Go USA 😂
You learn something new everyday.
Land of the Free. And Home of the Brave🇺🇲🦅
God bless the U.S.A.
And people still think that the US wouldn't dominate soccer if we gave half a shit about it.
Our women care about it a lot and surprise surprise they’re a dynasty

Cricket is actually a pretty cool sport in the faster paced version. I’m sure it it got a start like baseball it would be just as popular.
20/20 is a good intro for newbies. Nice and fast with lots of big hits.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. WINNING the (uh) CRICKET WORLD CUP.
I care zero about cricket. Hell I don't even know the rules. But I will NEVER turn down a chance to celebrate a US victory! 🍾🏆🏆🇺🇸
For those of you who weren't watching this game... whew.. you missed it.
The best part about cricket is that it makes British people think all foul balls are home runs.
What is cricket? GO TEAM USA
Fun fact: 99% of players are ethnically Indians. /s
hehe
Highlights link??

We are all cricketers on this blessed day
This what happens when you get a bunch of baseball bros into cricket 😂

ayeee! Good to hear mate! Hope you enjoy this game of cricket! 🫶🏻
'Murica
What states play the most cricket? I swear I’ve never seen anyone play cricket in the US.

This is like a ymca basketball team beating the 2017 warriors
USA USA USA USA
Well done!
I only know enough about cricket to know that Pakistan is good, and we don't care about it as a sport. But we do like winners, and therefore this is the greatest thing to happen this week.
We must become world champions in every sport
In overtime!
I’ve been told for context this is like Pakistan beating the USA in Olympic basketball.
lmao, fair enough 😂😂😂
Anyone know where to rewatch this match?
you can't find the whole match, but [Highlights](https://youtu.be/OSTMKBLDoLg?si=ModOYO48KGSW-i1v)
