I was born and raised in Colorado. People there really do hate being called sir or ma'am. I have never understood why. They always bring up age when it is obviously more about being polite and showing respect. The last person who told me she wasn't old enough to be called ma'am was in her mid 30s. I just responded with, "Yes, ma'am."

My mom was upset with me that I don’t continue to say “yes ma’am and sir” now that I live in the Pacific Northwest, versus when we lived in Louisiana. She doesn’t understand that 99% of the time I’d say it out here, the person would say it made them feel uncomfortable/old/just sounds weird/my mom is miss. I can’t seem to get it through to her that she doesn’t sound polite up here, it makes her sound like a servant and that’s how it makes people from the north feel and it’s uncomfortable.
