I can agree with Death Note, although it's for a different reason—mainly how they can easily get damaged. It is worse that Japan got the bunkoban, which looks awesome. https://preview.redd.it/gb65jn6328rc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75bc57be79751c918d51719b472de15ee53673fd

Now that you mention it, I'm surprised that Shonen Jump titles never got new editions but instead a 3-in-1 omnibus, with a few exceptions. When To Love-Ru was announced for an English license in 2017, Seven Seas gave the series a 2-in-1 omnibus treatment, even though the bunkoban edition existed the prior year. https://preview.redd.it/4b1ckmi968rc1.jpeg?width=883&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=add0f06f8b685bf698951ae2eca5820649c0ab29

Omnibuses are cheaper and tend to attract buyers who'd otherwise be put off by dozens of single volumes. The translation for Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service was losing money and pretty much dead in the water until they started re-releases of the earlier volumes as 3-in-1s. The latest omnibus was published in 2022 containing one new volume; this was _7 years_ after the previous volume was originally printed. Thankfully the next omnibus is scheduled to be released in a few months. I'd prefer singles over them, but it's better than nothing.

You're right about omnibuses being cheaper, and giving The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service that format was a necessary choice. To prove your argument even further, if Seven Seas were to publish To Love-Ru in the bunkoban, it would be more expensive. For example, the deluxe edition of Spriggan costs around $30, while The Girl from the Other Side is $50. But still, new/perfect editions are better and easier to read than omnibuses, plus they contain new artwork and quality.

I have this exact set and I love it so much! It's super small and I have to literally bury my face into it to be able to read it BUT it's super convenient to carry around, paper quality is great and they indeed look awesome.

To be fair, U.S. publishers tend to change manga volumes' size bigger. I'm kinda jealous that Japan got that edition rather than the one we got.

I think it's mainly due to the writing system, Japanese text can fit on super small pages and still be (mainly) readable while it doesn't always work if the writing is horizontal and not vertical, also alphabet often takes up more space

I don't think that the Death Note Black Editions look bad, I think they look really good. I do think that the Soul Eater Perfect Editions look very boring and plain though

Slothman0007

Some are better than others like all things. I love the fullmetal editions, Fist of the north star, gundam origin, girl from the other side etc etc

Boxman__37

Could be worse, it could be like the one pie 3in1

PhoShizzity

God I hate those, the divided covers are so sad to see compared to how good the single volumes are

NO-IM-DIRTY-DAN

I actually *hugely* prefer those to the singles because they look a lot more cohesive on the shelf.

Boxman__37

I mean sure but the front is what I was referring to, it’s lazy and ugly

NO-IM-DIRTY-DAN

Tbh I don’t really like a lot of the singles’ front covers either. The omnibuses may be lazy and boring but at least they have a uniform color scheme

Boxman__37

The omnibus has the singles covers anyways tho. So I guess you just lose in general, tuff

NO-IM-DIRTY-DAN

Oh I mostly meant the border colors. The illustrations are nice I just don’t like how each single is a different color and a lot of them are colors/designs I don’t love.

PhoShizzity

Sometimes. I don't mind the Soul Eater Perfect Editions, I think the Viz JoJo covers are fantastic (even if I prefer the 1-3 style for consistency sake), and the Maid-sama 2 in 1 all look good. But this definitely doesn't apply for everything, and yeah the Death Note Black books don't look great.

bunnbunica

idk, i love the way they look 🤨

spinereader81

I didn't think it possible, but Viz actually managed to make Attack on Titan *even uglier* with those omnibuses! So much brown!

[deleted]

That's owned by Kodansha. I don't know if it is just me, but every edition of Attack on Titan (in the U.S.) looks worse than the last. Compare the oringal cover to the U.S. one, as well as their spines. https://preview.redd.it/bmwed2b8darc1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=44ebba1e33e002ea6f659919e56d72cd30f713e6

REBirthedDark96

Just get what you can... We should be grateful they publish these so everyone can enjoy a series. Usually these are OOPs as singles.

ScarletleavesNL

I think the Zelda and Pokemon adventures re-releases look great. Simplicity can work wonders. But the Tsubasa and XxxHolic omnibussen look too simple. It really is a per case ruling.

SkullyEyes

Completely agree I love the look of single volumes

LasesLeser

me too, especially those “2 in 1” ones..
