That's Bendis style of writing lol. Every issue ends with "Holy Fuck, No A cliffhanger, what's gonna happen??" And then you read Next Issue and all is fine lol. (I still love you, you bald headed hack) >!She lived so no worries!<

Randym1982

It was his version of Gwen Stacys death. I remember picking this run up after the first couple of trades, his dialogue was a new thing at the time and so was his writing. Now Modern writers tend to ALL write worst than this. Also Bagely was at his height during this run.

One of my favorite memories of Bendis (I was the member of his message board lol) when he picked up the Avengers, he was like "Why the Fuck, do you have Iron Man and Cap, hang out with Swordsman, Mantis and Hawkeye?? Where is Spidey or Wolverine" lol. I disagree with him regarding Hawkeye (I love Clint) but I tend to agree. Some of the Avengers (Swordsman, Mantis, Crystal etc) dumbed the team down. I definitely think Bendis had a hand in revolutionizing the story telling in comic medium. I remember when he Introduced the Illuminati (In the New Avengers book), the entire Message board was like "WTF, why are the most influential people in the Marvel Universe got together?? What is happening?" And he was just like "Oh, you mean the Illuminati? (wink, wink)" Those were some good times. Getting excited at comic stuff. I know people shit on Bendis a lot, but I still love him, and believe he actually done more good than bad (I mean, he did write some horrible shit lol)

I think it's because Ultimate Spidey was quite "episodic" too, this worked a lot like a tv show. So you have something sudden and big happen... until the next episode aired. It was definitely different from other comic book where you have a story starting in page 1 and concluding at the final page of the same issue. Or doing multiple arcs and fillers.

AJjalol

Definitely. The book kind of made me realize "Shit, Bendis could probably be good at writing some TV shows" Not that he needs it lol. Dude is making money off of the Miles, Riri and all other characters he invented.

CitizenTony

Lmao. Imo it's good for him, dude is talented, made incredible things like Ultimate Spidey, his Avengers run etc so he deserves his money haha. Some comics writers need to be rewarded. Btw, meanwhile, Ultimates worked a lot like a movie adaptation. Bryan Hitch's style reinforced this feeling.

velicinanijebitna

This was such a smart way to tease MJ's potential death.

Karsa69420

I’m on issue of 95 if this run in my Ultimate Universe read. This was one of many great holy shit moments. Their whole relationship is great, they are dumb teenagers dealing with insane stress, love how that bubbled up.

DimGenn2

Side note, I don't think I've ever seen MJ being referred to as just "Mary". It's, kinda weird honestly.

DonnyMox

Evidently she drinks more milk than Gwen. Stronger neck-bone.

CitizenTony

This was somehow quite ballsy to show us a Gwen Stacy-esque scene suddenly like this. The same year, Raimi did the same thing and did a tribute to that famous scene in Spider-man 1 with Mary Jane again.

BrianofKrypton

I remember the wait for that next issue, it was brutal!

Tuv0kshaKur

So. Same fate as Gwen?

DiZ1992

Nah she survives. This is just end of issue cliffhanger clearly referencing Gwen's death.

PunkchildRubes

Nah shes fine
