not op, but paradise lost’s gothic and my dying bride’s turn loose the swans are good places to start. turn loose was the first one of the genre i listened to
The other guy had good recs. However, I need to add The Silent Enigma by Anathema to complete The Peaceville Three (Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride, the pioneers of the genre)
Thanks for the recs! I was looking over the albums that people were suggesting for a tourney and there were definitely bands that I recognized or have listened to, like Katatonia and Theater of Tragedy. I just never thought about what genre they would fall under.
Paradise Lost - Gothic
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
Anathema - The Silent Enigma
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
The Gathering - Always...
Tiamat - Wildhoney
Saturnus - Paradise Belongs To You
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
Theater Of Tragedy - Self Titled
Rapture - Futile
October Tide - Rain Without End (not sure that one counts tho, it's basically just Katatonia)
How Many Albums were you thinking of doing roughly? I could try and find some others
My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, World of Light
Tristania - Widow's Weeds
Rapture - Futile
Mindrot - Drawing
Anathema - The Silent Enigma
Adagio - Romantic Serenades
The Sins of Thy Beloved - Lake of Sorrows
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
And of course:
Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear
There is a difference between bands being popular and people treating them as such and circlejerking the same few dozen bands from those 4 soecific genres by this sub.
yeahh this subs just a circlejerk i just wanna see some new bands/albums suggestions but no! they gotta praise the same albums over and over again its pretty annoying
There’s definitely posts like that here, they just don’t gain as much traction. u/Lilith_Immaculate_ has done multiple tournaments with lesser known bands / albums.
New bands / albums
they do people except people upvote and recommend the most overmentioned bands/albums that everyone knows so the less known one's get buried
Maybe too obvious, but this is a good list if you're looking for good stuff with varying levels of obscurity:
https://old.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/1dkal9r/shreddits_top_5_of_2024_results/
I clearly haven't, cause all the tournaments I've seen for a long while now have Opeth going out early or mid-game. Something must have really turned some grudges at that Quizlex tournament then.
Yeah I was thinking about how you literally make the tournaments that these people are asking for but sadly get very little participation compared to the ones full of popular albums
It's kinda annoying cause then people continue to complain how it's always the same albums. And it's like "bro, there's people doing a tournament that are what you're searching for."
And then you have to sort of find that sort of balance between lesser known and popular, which is what I’m going to try with my two 2000s tourneys in the future (because the current top 48 is, well, grim to say the least)
I think it's more complicated than that. I assume the people whining about the subreddit circlejerking the same bands and albums over and over are not the same people clamoring for more tournaments.
Oh yeah 100% I'm simplifying things you're right about that, but I feel like it's kinda true that what people tell you they want isn't always what they actually want. Like I've seen many YouTubers pivot their content in a different direction from what they usually make and their audience always tells them they support them and would be willing to watch different content, but you check the view counts and no one actually wants to watch the new content. It's a similar case where people may whine about the same repetitive tournament posts with the same albums, but when a tournament with more niche albums they haven't heard of gets posted they are unlikely to interact with the post. Sorry if I rambled on too long.
How about we try to make the tournaments a bit more fun? Like say someone makes a tournament for the best drumming in an album or the best screams or the best cover art or whatever. This way maybe it becomes more engaging so you actually have to relisten to the stuff and perhaps all the "poser" albums won't get knocked out one by one literally first.
This is something called underground. Any band that isn't underground has a sizeable fanbase so I wouldn't call them underrated or lesser known since they usually have big place in their genre. And considering the unlimited amount of underground bands, they has to be further categorization in order to make such a tournament.
Oh for sure, it was just a broad statement. It would just be nice to shed some light on the more underground stuff. Im always looking for new things to listen to as we all are, but as OP said, its just the same 50 bands over and over here.

Gothic Death-Doom tournament when? 90% of MTFM users would not known a single album.
You should do it! I don't know that I have ever listened to any Gothic Death-Doom but I'm interested.
not op, but paradise lost’s gothic and my dying bride’s turn loose the swans are good places to start. turn loose was the first one of the genre i listened to
Thanks for the recs!
Hmm, I'll think about it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MetalForTheMasses/s/bL5vfoIoEy
i need this in my life, but sadly you're right they would get no interaction
[Let's see how this goes lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/MetalForTheMasses/s/bL5vfoIoEy)
oh man these will be hard picks
popular bands are popular. who knew?
There is a difference between bands being popular and people treating them as such and circlejerking the same few dozen bands from those 4 soecific genres by this sub.
There's actually no difference between something being popular and people treating them as popular.
There are more than a few dozen popular metal bands.
yeahh this subs just a circlejerk i just wanna see some new bands/albums suggestions but no! they gotta praise the same albums over and over again its pretty annoying
There’s definitely posts like that here, they just don’t gain as much traction. u/Lilith_Immaculate_ has done multiple tournaments with lesser known bands / albums.
Thank you for the shout-out, Quiz. Much appreciated.
New bands / albums they do people except people upvote and recommend the most overmentioned bands/albums that everyone knows so the less known one's get buried
ahh got it. so i guess i gotta surf on /new for the good stuff ty!
Maybe too obvious, but this is a good list if you're looking for good stuff with varying levels of obscurity: https://old.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/1dkal9r/shreddits_top_5_of_2024_results/
I enjoyed Ten Ton Slug - Collosal Oppressor.
Check out my upcoming brown albums tournament. There are *some* popular bands but also some that aren't spoken of very much.
Ban Opeth and Death albums. It’s getting ridiculous.
and Megadeth's Rust in peace
Overrated to death (pun intended)
Opeth have never won or come close to win any of these tournaments. Trust me. Us dickriders are outnumbered in the tournament posts.
You clearly haven’t seen the original quizlex tournament
I clearly haven't, cause all the tournaments I've seen for a long while now have Opeth going out early or mid-game. Something must have really turned some grudges at that Quizlex tournament then.
this literally has a picture of blackwater park winning a tournament in it
I hope they stop making them
I must make djent tournament
Please do
I’m just happy Opeth won in your post
And yet people whine in my tournaments whem I *don't* include the usual suspects.
Yeah I was thinking about how you literally make the tournaments that these people are asking for but sadly get very little participation compared to the ones full of popular albums

I'm really hoping that one goes well
Well naturally no one's going to be interested in one with 48 albums they haven't heard, despite them saying they want that
I think it's more complicated than that. I assume the people whining about the subreddit circlejerking the same bands and albums over and over are not the same people clamoring for more tournaments.

“Simp for what band, Bart?” Death *MFTM goes crazy* Me: ick
Goregrind ranking when?
Haemorrhage is peak imo
Opeth flairs DNI

The beatings will continue until the Rusting has Peaced. Happy Chuck Schuldiner Day, residents of r/blackwaterpark
Pssstt! Go join r/blackwaterpark
Someone should start a rank of underrated or lesser known bands.
like this obscure indie band I found Metallica, or Nile!
This is something called underground. Any band that isn't underground has a sizeable fanbase so I wouldn't call them underrated or lesser known since they usually have big place in their genre. What we need is a best of the best poll
Wtf does that even mean
probably a tournament of all the winners 🤷♀️
We've done that already, like 6 or 7 times too, we're currently doing a "top 25 albums of all time" poll with all the usual suspects being listed
Yeah but I’ve already forgotten since the time we did it last weekend and I need to once again declare my love for Rust In Peace
