I enjoy their first few albums but I don't really listen to them as much as I used to. Waking the fallen is one of my favorite albums ever though. That shit goes hard.
Not my style. They’re a good gateway band. Decent guitar work, but I don’t like the vocals. This is also probably the 946th time this question has been asked about this same band.
I feel bad for Matt. Hereally blew his voice during the metalcore work they did. Hes really been working on strengthening it but it sounds horse to me still, especially live.
The point is that his vocal ability is *not* good. Poor technique leads to vocal injury. People who don't know think he sounds cool. People who do think he's mediocre at best. Because he's been working on coming back from vocal injury he's only recently started singing with solid ability.
You don't know what you're talking about.
https://blabbermouth.net/news/avenged-sevenfold-m-shadows-looks-back-on-his-throat-surgery
Try again.
TL;DR: He had surgery on his vocal folds back in 2002 after being a young kid with no training who's band struck it big and blew out his voice.
Obviously not. The point is his voice has been irreparably damaged for a long time. I.E. He's been a dogshit singer most of his career.
If you think his vocal technique is great I can only assume you don't know what you're talking about and likely aren't a vocalist yourself. It's *better* now because he knows it's the only way he can keep what he has left alive. But that's not saying much these days. To be fair what he has managed to keep does show in LIBAD. His best performance to date despite how tired his chords are.
If he had more vocal surgery recently that only proves my point. Your vocal chords don't just get infected out of nowhere.
Sounding the seventh trumpet is an album that I think is overlooked. Sure shadows don't sound intelligible, but most artists with their first album aren't good anyway. But there are good songs in there. And I think it's cool that The Rev drummed the whole album in one take.
Waking the Fallen was a lot of our first album that we tried. And for a good reason too! Synyster Gates hopped in as the lead guitarist, Shadows sounds intelligible, the drumming is more clean, overall, the change was all for the better. The vocals have a mix of singing and screaming. It was my favorite record of theirs for a whole year.
City of Evil was the album where they got rid of screaming for the most part. Creatively, it was their peak, even if people didn't like it at first. The Rev had his time to finally shine on the kit and I couldn't have been happier. It made me wish I could've heard what he did in the previous two albums. The solos had even more soul to the sound. Vocals were on point. And I will admit that if it wasn't for the Rev, I wouldn't have really liked the album.
Ah the self titled album. When the Rev made it to the microphone. And the sound changed as well. This was the album when people loved to hate them. Yet nobody questioned ALOPH and still didn't. It's an album that I used to put on repeat along with WtF and Nightmare. This was my opinion that they were at an all time high creatively.
Diamonds in the Rough. Man nobody ever talks about this album. And only because it's scrapped material. But this album was polished to be released for a reason. They knew the songs were good but not good enough to be in an album, and I still disagree with their decision on Demons and Crossroads. Those should've been in their correct album.
Nightmare was their masterpiece in 2010. The album has the darkest lyrics of them all, the heaviest burden of a fallen soldier, and just trying to move on. With Mike Portnoy filling in for Jimmy, it just works so well. And the tracks in the album are always pulling on my heart strings. Victim, Save Me, Fiction, Danger Line, it's no wonder why it's my personal favorite album of theirs.
I'll put Black Reign here. With Arin Ilejay filling in after Mike, he did them justice on the Call of Duty songs. But I never played that game so I don't have much to say other than the songs are A tier. (Yes I know Brooks did Mad Hatter. I'll praise him later.)
Hail to the King. The classic dad rock album without being dad rock... as of now anyway. Using inspiration from old idols to create songs. Sometimes blatantly ripping off songs like This Means War/Metallica's Sad but True. But I honestly feel like the deep cuts of the album and Acid Rain are the real saviors of the album. Gimme some Coming Home and we are talking.
The Stage. Maaaan where do I begin on this masterpiece? The Stage, Paradigm, all of the tracks in a row and including the deluxe. It's all perfect for me. But just like everyone, I didn't care much for it in the beginning. Now, I've placed it at #2 in my brooks. The vocals are on point. Syn/Zacky guitars are a chefs kiss. Jonny Christ our Lord and Savior killed the bass as usual. And Brooks? Showing up and bringing the band to its former glory. He was the perfect person to pick up where they left off. And he's tasteful with it too. This is an album where I would tell my younger self that I'm gonna listen to it no matter how many times it took until I got why it was so good. Stupid naïve Carmen...
Aaaaand Life is But a Dream. It's gonna take time for me to like it but I only like Mattel-Cosmic + G and Life is But a Dream. Those are the tracks I'll praise forever. But Game Over, Easier, (O)rdinary and (D)eath are still weird to me. I used to think Retrovertigo was weird but I grew a liking to it. I doubt I'm gonna be weird on those 4 forever.
Did this get annoying to read?
Oh my God I forgot about HTTK Deathbat. It's really underrated but I've never played the game. The music is something that is certainly unique, but they made it work. It's my secret 9th album that is placed in 8th place
my favorite band 🖤 I love how every album of theirs is a different genre of metal, and the bands that influenced them (Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Black Sabbath, and recently Daft Punk) are some of my other all-time favorites.
City of Evil was the first “heavy” CD I bought. 10 y/o me and 28 y/o me dearly love most of their records and respect them for constantly pushing boundaries instead of rewriting the same record over and over again.
LIBAD kicked serious tail and they put on a killer show each time I’ve seen them.
Admittedly I haven't heard anywhere near their entire discography but I always thought of them as kinda corny. But life would be boring if everyone liked the same things.
I’d say they’re a nice blend of classic metal sounds (think Iron Maiden or Metallica) and more modern metal sounds from genres like Metalcore.
Also, just for a little opinion of mine, I’ve always considered their album City Of Evil as the album that essentially “saved” metal in the 21st century.
I love them! They're definitely a favorite and I listen to a ton of their stuff all the time. I've got a tattoo appointment for an A7X tattoo this week 🎉🎉
I think they’re alright, but my kid FUCKING loves them. He makes me blast Hail to the King when I drive him to school. Honestly, I can’t complain, it’s a banger song.
They are one of the bands that got me into metalcore and metal in general. So I have fond memories of them and still listen to their new music when they put it out
They get too much hate. They are very talented musicians, and have some excellent songs, especially off of their self titled album, and Nightmare. Sure M. Shadows's voice is very whiny, and their last album was a bit too directionless. But theyre a solid band.
Their career has some real highs and lows, but in 2024, I love them. LIBAD was my album of the year last year and just blew me away. I never expected an album like that from them. It's just fantastic.
Love them. They were my gateway band for metal.
Just saw them for the first time last October with Falling in Reverse, and it honestly was pretty bad. Not a fan of FIR, and A7X played a lot of their LIBAD songs (which was expected of course). The AI crap was wacky, too.
I will say, I still respect them immensely, and I will die on a hill for them. Don't care if their not traditional metal, it's good music.
One of my favourite bands!
My album rankings of theirs…
1. White Album
2. City Of Evil
3. The Stage
4. Nightmare
5. Life Is But A Dream…
6. Hail To The King
7. Waking The Fallen
8. STST
…bare in mind, on any given day the top 4 could all switch around! Love them!
regardless of what you think about them, it's cool to see a band trying to do something out of their comfort zone, i really enjoyed the stage and libad
I got into their Waking The Fallen album during the metalcore craze and liked the big songs off of City of Evil and the song Almost Easy but that’s as far as I got. Nothing else interested me.
Good for what they are but it isn't my style. I appreciate them but they are closer to the hard rock side than the real metal side. Now judge me gate keepers.
When I was a young metalhead I loved their stuff. I think its a good introduction into the genre. However, I find that most people outgrow their music. They were definitely more of a force when the Rev was still around.
Very, very mid band.
They have so many influences, but execute them so uninterestingly. They have moments of brilliance but it's almost always lost in between many minutes of mediocre uncreative music.
I could never tell the difference between this band and three day grace
Kinda thought both were pretty fruity for years. Still kinda do. I mean I was really trying to give it a go because a lot of my friends liked it. But Much like that other group that sang about waking up and putting on makeup La La La La. It just didn’t take, and just ended up annoying me. Can’t deny that they’re talented.
I'm not really fussed with them on album but I saw them live back in 2017 and thought they were fantastic. I won't sit down to listen to them, but I definitely *got* them when I got the live experience.
I really like Waking the Fallen and City of Evil. I dont know their newer stuff well but when I checked it out nothing spoke to me as much so I think I might just prefer their older stuff.

Massive part of my teenage years. Not a fan of their newer stuff. Saw them at download for the first time this year and performed really well but their setlist was all over the place and was disappointed with their finishing song. They didn’t play enough of their old stuff
Eh. Just not for me but I can recognize why people are fans and how well of a gateway band they are including for myself. Thing is shortly after discovering them I found metal that was more suited to my tastes and thus I became a metalhead.
I know I'm in the minority but I think everything before LIBAD is garbage made by edge lords who think they're way more clever than they are. LIBAD has some issues but it's a step in a much better direction away from their radio rock standards.

Rev was a hell of a drummer on CoE. I think their ballads shine through, stylistically they have a lot of talent to make a sort of 80s-reminiscent ballads. Seize The Day & So Far Away are two of my favorite songs of all time.
They are the Guns N Roses of the 2000s.
Good, solid musicians, some classic songs, legendary band, an overall really good band.
For me, songs are hit or miss. The good ones are really good but the bad ones are really bad.
I thought Hail to the King was a great album, and self titled and Waking the Fallen were okay, but the rest are pretty forgettable, and I don't really have interest in them anyway.
Like System of A Down, I fooled myself into liking them for a while because the music was solid, until I came to the realization that I hate the singer's voice with a fiery passion and now it's literally nails on a chalkboard.
I couldn't care less about insulting anybody over their musical taste and I also don't mind musicians being gay. A7x just sounds gay and OP asked what we think about them. Those 3 letters explain very clearly that I don't like their music and why. It's a super efficient comment.

I enjoy their first few albums but I don't really listen to them as much as I used to. Waking the fallen is one of my favorite albums ever though. That shit goes hard.
I like all of their work but no album by them will ever beat Waking the Fallen. That being said exist is one of my favorite closers to an album
Not my style. They’re a good gateway band. Decent guitar work, but I don’t like the vocals. This is also probably the 946th time this question has been asked about this same band.
Ok then. Enough of that tired question then. Let's ask something fresh here. What do you think of Five Finger Death Punch? /s
Why does metalcore get so much hate?
Is Panera overrated?
What do you think about the Mommy part from Down With the Sickness?
*paneer
I feel bad for Matt. Hereally blew his voice during the metalcore work they did. Hes really been working on strengthening it but it sounds horse to me still, especially live.
I saw him live a couple months ago and the vocals were amazing
I saw them live last September (my gf at the time was a massive A7X fan) and I thought he sounded great
I’m not even suprised I was shocked at how insane his vocal ability is but I can imagine it took it’s toll
The point is that his vocal ability is *not* good. Poor technique leads to vocal injury. People who don't know think he sounds cool. People who do think he's mediocre at best. Because he's been working on coming back from vocal injury he's only recently started singing with solid ability.
His recent vocal cord injury was not due to singing. He took vocal lessons before their 3rd album and his vocal ability is great

I’ve just never been a fan of his singing. His singing is too nasal for me to enjoy.
10/10 band. If I was given the chance, I would make an unbearable post that nobody will care about
Do it!
Sounding the seventh trumpet is an album that I think is overlooked. Sure shadows don't sound intelligible, but most artists with their first album aren't good anyway. Agreed. Nightmare is their masterpiece
Thank you for reminding me
Oh my God I forgot about HTTK Deathbat. It's really underrated but I've never played the game. The music is something that is certainly unique, but they made it work. It's my secret 9th album that is placed in 8th place
Agreed. They’re the best at what they do. Lots of certified bangers for the gym
They're fantastic. LIBAD was one of my top albums last year
That album really is something special. Kind of have to get past expectations to see how they really passed themselves to do something different.
Ppl hate em and they got some cringe, but they also have some fuckin BANGERS
Awesome. Great. Very good.
I love em, most here hate em
I really think they peaked with City of Evil.
Yeah after the vocal change, the band kind of dropped off for me. Still enjoy their older stuff.
Fruity as hell.
Avenged sevenfold is music for guys who slap their own ass during sex
Simultaneously overrated AND overhated.
My childhood band, how I got into metal. Barely listen to them these days but gonna see them for the first time on sunday and Im stoked
Like a handful of songs but that’s it. Not the worst just not my style
my favorite band 🖤 I love how every album of theirs is a different genre of metal, and the bands that influenced them (Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Black Sabbath, and recently Daft Punk) are some of my other all-time favorites.
They are pretty good. They get a lot of unnecessary hate. They’ve evolved into a weird prog band and I’m really here for it.
Damn, I really need to listen to their last couple of albums then. After Hail to the King I kinda lost interest in their new releases.
Oh believe me, same. That album was beyond disappointing.
Good gateway band and the more prog oriented hard rock that they are doing rn is really cool
Never liked them, but it's hard to argue their talent level
self titled is amazing
They got me into metal.
I kinda dislike their vocals but willing to put that aside for LIBaD and CoE which I really enjoy
Never heard of em.
Bad
i love them and unholy confessions was one of my introductions to metal
I respect the musicianship of the rest of the members, but I cannot stand the vocals.
They've been one of my favorites for nearly 20 years now.
Got into them too late but they definitely got a sound and some talented AF musicians
i think they’re great, didn’t really care for them at first but now they’re one of my faves
Really dislike them
Was never the biggest fan, but I never hated them. Though it's been a long time since I listened to them.
They’re fine. Cosmic is an amazing song
Great band although I don't ever listen to them anymore.
All of their albums are straight bangers
I guess they're fi ye yi ye yine
2nd favorite metal band of all time
I love them! They're definitely a favorite and I listen to a ton of their stuff all the time. I've got a tattoo appointment for an A7X tattoo this week 🎉🎉

Horrible band

Pretty terrible
Awaken the fallen and city of evil are great. Everything else kind of misses the mark for me.
I'm not really fussed with them on album but I saw them live back in 2017 and thought they were fantastic. I won't sit down to listen to them, but I definitely *got* them when I got the live experience.
Never liked them. None of the albums, none of the songs, from first to last. Never understood why people like them either.
is this the one with Kang?
I really like Waking the Fallen and City of Evil. I dont know their newer stuff well but when I checked it out nothing spoke to me as much so I think I might just prefer their older stuff.
Liked them and saw them in concert back in high school. Haven’t really listened to them in a while, now that I think about it.
City of Evil is made up of both good and great songs, but might be a little overly ambitious. Their debut really sucked, though.
Saw them on an Ozzfest and they just aren't my cup of tea. I can recognize the talent of the musicians, but the vocals and delivery aren't what I'm looking for.
I love em
Massive part of my teenage years. Not a fan of their newer stuff. Saw them at download for the first time this year and performed really well but their setlist was all over the place and was disappointed with their finishing song. They didn’t play enough of their old stuff
Eh. Just not for me but I can recognize why people are fans and how well of a gateway band they are including for myself. Thing is shortly after discovering them I found metal that was more suited to my tastes and thus I became a metalhead.
Buttrock.
I like them
Kid metal
Waking the Fallen is their Ascendancy, Nightmare is their Shogun
boring ass hard rock w/breakdowns
I know I'm in the minority but I think everything before LIBAD is garbage made by edge lords who think they're way more clever than they are. LIBAD has some issues but it's a step in a much better direction away from their radio rock standards.
The Rev was an amazing drummer, didn't really like them outside of that and haven't heard many songs since he passed
They got me into metal, but the only albums I still enjoy are Nightmare and the Stage
The guitarists are very talented, like some of their songs but haven't commited to listening a full album.
I loved them in high school. I still occasionally listen to songs from Waking the Fallen through Nightmare but I didn’t really care for much after that. That one long prog song (Exist?) they did was pretty cool too. I’d probably still see them live for nostalgia’s sake
Enjoyed a couple songs when I was first getting into metal, but I kinda find them a lil corny. Overall good musicians tho
I remember liking them for about three or four months when they hit big, then suddenly, it was like a switch went off in my brain, and I just couldn't listen to them (especially the lyrics) anymore.
Rev was a hell of a drummer on CoE. I think their ballads shine through, stylistically they have a lot of talent to make a sort of 80s-reminiscent ballads. Seize The Day & So Far Away are two of my favorite songs of all time.
Not a fan, primarily because of vocals.
Over rated, don’t get the hype
All round and amazing band not a single bad album
Their self titled album is really the only thing worth listening to imo
I love them and how they aren't afraid to evolve, musically and personally. Life is But a Dream is definitely my favorite album by them right now
They are the Guns N Roses of the 2000s. Good, solid musicians, some classic songs, legendary band, an overall really good band. For me, songs are hit or miss. The good ones are really good but the bad ones are really bad.
I love all their albums up to Nightmare. They’re all skilled musicians, but without The Rev helping with songwriting it just doesn’t do it for me.
Not bad, good for beginner metalheads, hail to the king is fire
I love them, they are my 2nd favourite band
irregular band
Boring, but not the worst entry level band
Saw them live a couple of days ago and it was really sad. Used to be a cool band now it’s just cringe
I thought Hail to the King was a great album, and self titled and Waking the Fallen were okay, but the rest are pretty forgettable, and I don't really have interest in them anyway.
City of Evil is a GOATED album... the rest is meh
Fine, a few great songs but generally kind of mid. Kind of like the black album era Metallica of the 21st century.
M. Shadows is nails on a chalkboard for me.
Cringe poser music for lifetime fast food employees, military jackoffs and cops
They said Avenged Sevenfold not Five Finger Death Punch chill man
Pass
Like System of A Down, I fooled myself into liking them for a while because the music was solid, until I came to the realization that I hate the singer's voice with a fiery passion and now it's literally nails on a chalkboard.
They are blue stripe, Kirkland brand metal. They are the Nickleback of metal. Even their band members have cringe metal stage names.
Nightmare is decent but overrated, and everything after that is hot garbage
The last album is something i can’t describe using positive words
bad
Shite.
I personally think that they're extremely boring radio pop metal but to each their own.
gay
Gay as a compliment?
nay
Can't think of a more intresting insult?
I couldn't care less about insulting anybody over their musical taste and I also don't mind musicians being gay. A7x just sounds gay and OP asked what we think about them. Those 3 letters explain very clearly that I don't like their music and why. It's a super efficient comment.
What it is is exceptionally vague and unconstructive, I have still genuinely no idea why you dislike them, and at this point you've said more than just gay, so it was less efficient more of a nothing comment.
Gay as an insult in 2024? Really, man?
yay
