Chris Barnes helped start off Cannibal Corpse and he's still very respected in the death metal community. I love Corpsegrinder but people trying to erase CB from everything related to Cannibal Corpse and disowning him because he said a few dickish things is asinine.
What does the E stand for? I see comments about cannibal corpse, Chris Barnes doesn’t have an E in his name so can someone explain?
Edit: okay nvm I google “Chris Barnes Eeeee” and I had a good laugh
Hes a actually a pretty decent singer if you ask me. He has really good range and he can hit some pretty decent high notes. Just listen to him on A Tout le Monde
It’s weird because objectively he isn’t good but I find it to fit the music
Last record is the only one where I just straight up didn’t like him on some tracks
Yes and no. Sure, his voice is technically... questionable, and it makes fetting into Megadeth a bit harder than it should. But his voice is an acquired taste IMHO, because once you get into the band you notice that his voice is unique and recognizable, an integral part of the band's identity and that snarling rasp (for lack of a better descriptor) fits like a glove in their musical proposal.
Admittedly, that was a bad analogy for me since I loved Mercyful Fate upon first listen when I heard them in nineteen 1985 , but it took me until early 2000s to finally appreciate olives
I'm definitely trying.
Take "Into the Coven", for example. Great intro, lovely buildup, killer riff, I'm enjoying it. And then he comes in with a deflated scream and I'm out of it.
I think his normal voice is cool, it's the falsettos that kill me.
Have you tried any King Diamond? Same falsetto obviously, but I personally prefer King Diamond to Mercyful Fate. I love them both, so don't crucify me, MetalForTheMasses. Anyway, check out Abigail; great story, great songs!
Look, maybe theyre not your taste, but you cant argue that guy has technique. That alone puts him miles above all the other worst vocalist contenders here. Personally, he is one of my favorites.
I love king diamond. Names my daughter Abigail. Having said that when my brother said he sounds like ELMO sometimes i pissed myself laughing.
Still. Amazing riffs and it’s as metal as it gets.
I get that people have different tastes, but it's fucking crazy that this take is one of the most upvoted one here. King Diamond? Seriously? He's objectively one of the most gifted singers in the entire genre.
If Vince Neil counts, it's Vince Neil. My least favorite is warrel Dane though. Not to shit on anybody that loves him, but his voice has a real love/hate appeal and try as I might, I can't get into it. Nevermore music is killer though.
Belladonna ruins every anthrax album he's on so there's that.
I can't stand Paul Baloff or the dude from overkill either.
So many great bands ruined by the vocals.
That's literally true for tesla now - bro literally starts off as an actual cartman taking a dump voice and does not stop, so gotta admire the dude's stamina for being a billion years old and still livin the lifestyle
but youtube has guaranteed I'll never pay or attend a free tesla show again lol those bootlegs are fucken horrifying and have to be physically painful in real life for the audience if my pc speakers are icepicking me that hard in my precious ear holes
WARREL? Really? I threw up on my mouth a little reading that.
I respect your option but…
And overkill. Just two of my all time favs. You and. Me are enemies 🤣
I get it man, I wish I got the appeal. Dead heart was such a good record overall but it never took for me. Politics of ecstacy was a banger too musically. I saw him live back in the day and he was drunk and an asshole too so that might cloud my judgement a bit as well.
Overkill album singing is awful yeah. But I saw them live not too long ago, and because he's all old and shit, his vocals are actually way better and less parody like. Definitely a band that aged better live
You know what's not fair? That the band keeps writing material that LaBrie just can't deliver anymore. Maybe he gets it right in the studio with enough takes and editing. But live it's pretty bad, I've seen it. LaBrie can still absolutely deliver a decent performance, if he just uses his range right in the song. I absolutely don't get why they write stuff that he isn't able to perform live.
This comes from a fan of the band btw.
JLB is far from the worst of all time, but I get your point.
Last year's tour left me a little disappointed, but hearing him sing on stage with Devin Townsend more than made up for it.
I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but I’ve been seeing Bryan’s vocals get trashed way more in the past six months compared to when I saw them in 2019. Once they played Coachella, got popular with the zoomers on TikTok, and had a little bit of mainstream success on their last album, all of the sudden they were on every metal head’s radar as one of the most overhyped bands in existence.
it's pretty hard to match against Serj, someone with potential to sing in the opera. Serj's voice is amazing, i feel like it's an acquired taste - definitely not what we're used to with metal, not everyone likes it, but once you listen to it a bit you feel the charm.
Anthrax's original vocalist was way better. Fistful of Metal was the first album I heard and I loved it, then I listened to Spreading the Disease and the vocals were just so flat in comparison. Fistful of Metal being my introduction to them killed any enjoyment I could have gotten from the rest of their discography lol.
James Labrie. I'm not a vocal coach or anything, so I have no idea if he's actually "bad," but I absolutely can not stand the sound of his voice, haha.
His technique is good, so he‘s not a contender for worst metal vocalist. You just dont like him. Thats ok everybody has subjective taste, but your taste doesnt make him bad. I used to be a bit of a hater, but i really got around to liking his vocals.
His modern vocals are kind of atrocious when he’s not whisper-singing, but pre food poisoning his highs kicked *ass*.
See: Metropolis pt. 1, Learning to Live, Innocence Faded
I hear this take a lot, but I never understand it. I think he has one of the best voices in metal. I have never listened to them live, but on the studio albums he sounds great. Does he cross the line from being operatic to being whiny to you?
I sorta feel bad for Mustaine. He didn't want to sing but he couldn't find a singer so he was stuck. But now, anyone else would sound out of place, or make Megadeth sound completely different, especially with a Dio or Dickinson singing style.
I've listened to 1000s of death and black metal bands at this point and even though you get a wide range of vocal skill in those subgenres there's almost never been a time where I've listened to a band and thought the vocals are so bad I don't want to listen to it. Oftentimes if I think the vocals are bad the rest of the band isn't great either and it's the latter part of why I skip over that band.
... But the vocals on Warp Chamber's Implements of Excruciation are fucking awful, and makes what would otherwise be a very strong album a skip for me. I've seen people praise the vocals because they sound nasty and brutal but they're bad. Legit feels like they recorded an entire album only to realize last second they didn't have a vocalist and someone hastily learned to do harsh vocals in a matter of weeks. They don't even feel like they're in rhythm half the time
Gave it a listen and it just seems like they've balanced the vocals so poorly compared to the rest of the band.
Has a similar sound to Slaughter of the Soul if Tomas just gurgled.
Yeah I checked it out expecting a disaster (my own fault) and while I see how they're bad, they're like, fine. Nothing to write home about, but I can't really make out any words in them. imo they aren't atrocious, they're just there. The breakdown in the first track is a good example of where I can't even tell if there are supposed to be vocals or not.
This is just a personal opinion ofc but I actually pay very little attention to vocalists in metal music.
I am primarily listening to this genre for the drumming.
Because this is fully subjective, even though I will likely die by saying this, I have to say...
*Deep inhale*
*Deep exhale.*
Lemmy.
I just have never ever enjoyed his voice, and am shocked that so many people do. His voice just sounds like a wheelbarrow full of gravel with a bad wheel bearing being drug over the treads of a rusty Bobcat.
Chris Barnes
He has sucked since day 1. *Butchered at Birth* and *Eaten Back to Life* get a pass, but it's a tenuous one.
the most recent vocals that turned me off entirely is the new Sear Bliss. The music is great, but the vocals ruin it.
I think he was amazing on Tomb of the Mutilated. George is obviously the better choice. I do agree that Chris after CC is and will be shit. Six feet under is…not it
He may have a good voice but he doesn't use the good parts of it very often. Most of the time he just sounds like a tryhard tough guy. Not only the voice itself but the way he says some of his lines is ear grating
I do not like Tim Aymar of control denied at all. Ruins the album for me.
It’s a testament to Cryptopsy’s None So Vile lineup that they made an incredible album with Dan Greening snorting like a pig
Attila or whatever his name is from mayhem is dreadful
Joey Belladonna
If you want unpopular opinions you’ll just have to look at the bottom of the comment section of this post in a few hours, it’s gonna be a downvote farm
Hard disagree on Attila, personally. While his Mayhem work doesn't show his vocal prowess all that well, I swear that he's got one of the most versatile voices in extreme metal. A good example might be Cara Mia by Tormentor, where he uses a harsh sprachgesang, almost like Leonard Cohen with a bit more aggression.
Your opinion's totally valid, I just had to put that out there. Also agree on Cryptopsy: I checked out None So Vile since it's been cited so often as a seminal brutal death metal album, and while it delivered on the brutality, I just didn't gel with the vocal style.
Every depressive suicidal black metal vocalist. I forgot the name of the band but they were French I think and I was listening to the song and I was like hey this is pretty good even though I can’t understand what he’s saying cause he’s singing French, and then he proceeded to fake cry and scream for the next seven minutes.
Technically speaking, Kai Hansen is a terrible singer. Always has been. He never learned to properly administrate his voice, he never took care of it (been a heavy smoker since youth).
As long as his vocal chords "held", he had a very characteristic voice, raw and sinister in a scene widely dominated by clean and high-pitched voices (Kiske). On Land of the Free, Somewhere Out in Space, Power Plant, Blast from the Past and No World Order he's amazing. He did great things... in studio.
Live, however...
It's hard to say. Metal vocals are still a Wild West kind of scene, if you ask me. All sorts of young kids trying to figure out how to make the most brutal sound with minimal vocal damage. With so many vocalists out there, it's hard to rag on any of them for their sound except Chris Barnes.
Beg to differ.
Sometimes a song requires a higher-pitched voice in the background yelling SO WHATCHA GONNA DO NOW?!?
And when it does, there’s only one man to call.
myself cause i try to go for a max cavalera fused with LG petrov (i believe how u spell his last name) but instead i sound like im just yelling after raging from video games🤣
Some guys that can really get on my nerves. Labrie, Dream Theater can have something awesome going on and then he opens his mouth and ruins it. It's mind boggling. Hetfield, I know people will flip. But after AJFA it's been the same old pirate show. It's unbearable. And it's it's not the arrgh, yah, yah, then it's something like the day that never comes. Or, my life style, determines my death style, tick, tick, tick, tick. I can't do it. And one last that comes to mind, Geddy Lee, depending on the song. I do really enjoy all 3 of these bands, but sometimes, the vocals become overbearing and I need a break. For Metallica, I pretty much stick to their 1st 4 albums.
I’m tired of pretending like Corey Taylor is a good vocalist. My man cannot scream to save his life so idek why they try, and his clean singing is the musical equivalent of eat plain cheerios
Me. Totally me.
(I've been in a number of car crashes, wrestling matches, and all sorts of anything else that has destroyed the useful parts of cookies and fry and being an ENT's nightmare)

I'll give you a hint....... E.
Hey man, his cannibal corpse records still hold up and SFU were rad until they lost Allen West.
Sure. His CC stuff is great. But right now he's awful. Terrible.
It's still just death metal tho, I mean you've got Vince Neil out there running around shrieking.
I mean, that'll happen if you growl for 40 years with no technique. Kinda like how Danni Filth lost his highs
Chris Barnes helped start off Cannibal Corpse and he's still very respected in the death metal community. I love Corpsegrinder but people trying to erase CB from everything related to Cannibal Corpse and disowning him because he said a few dickish things is asinine.
Who is trying to erase it? I said he's a shit vocalist - now.
I agree and today he is considered a joke - for his awful vocals and his terrible hard rock covers. Vince Neil being worse is highly debatable.
He not respected lol
I'M NOT A MAN I'M A FUCKING BEAST
eeeeeee
The body just twitches and EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
[E?](https://youtu.be/dhXYqAqPHRY?si=Lab8OnFVHzigpaZG)
Idk, Elmo could definitely have some killer metal vocals
What does the E stand for? I see comments about cannibal corpse, Chris Barnes doesn’t have an E in his name so can someone explain? Edit: okay nvm I google “Chris Barnes Eeeee” and I had a good laugh
Chris from Six Feet Under
He was legendary until the 2000s. Then he was average imo, then Torment came along and he went to shit. At least the latest one has no EEE
*THE BODY JUST TWITCHES AND* **SKEEEEEEEDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE**
#THE BODY JUST TWITCHES THERE EEEE NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Dave mustaine by a marathon
He's a great vocalist imo. Atrocious singer, but great vocalist.
This logically makes no sense but I also very much understand what you’re saying. I just *feel* it
lmao true

Hes a actually a pretty decent singer if you ask me. He has really good range and he can hit some pretty decent high notes. Just listen to him on A Tout le Monde
wha
i think you mean that he has a terrible voice, but can operate it well?
His voice fits the vibe of Megadeth, but he doesn't know how to sing. Most of his singing is more like talking.
Hello me .. meet the real me
AND MY MISFIT'S WAY OF LIFE🗣️🗣️
Never ever ever understood how sweating bullets is considered thrash metal
I don’t think it is if you look at it individually. It’s just considered „thrash“ per proxy because it was made by a thrash band.
Nah I dont get the hate his voice is so unique and awesome.
Saw him live last year and thought he actually sounded really good.
It’s weird because objectively he isn’t good but I find it to fit the music Last record is the only one where I just straight up didn’t like him on some tracks
His vocals are the main reason I like Megadeth, I never understood this criticism
For me, it's never been the vocals with Dave, it's the lyrics that kill me. Dave's written some horribly corny lyrics imo.
you'd love Into The Lungs of Hell - no lyrics there 😉
Yes but he also wrote "A Tout Le Monde".
Peace sells.... Owkkaay😜🎇
I disagree big time with this

DIO I’m just kidding. Chris Barnes is my answer
i was so close to typing an angry reply lol
Dio is a terrible vocalist because he sets a standard that almost no metal vocalist can live up to.
"Had us in the first half"
King Diamond´s comical falsetto is the reason I haven´t been able to fully get into Mercyful Fate.
Keep trying. It's like olives. Once you buy in, it's the best thing ever.
Olives are GOATED. Always have been. Just like mercyful fate
Admittedly, that was a bad analogy for me since I loved Mercyful Fate upon first listen when I heard them in nineteen 1985 , but it took me until early 2000s to finally appreciate olives
MMW: Next KD concept album will involve skulls, murder most foul, and olives.
Olives fucking suck
Wrong opinion
I’ll die on this hill idc
And i'll die on my hill. The better one. The one with olives
Hahaha fair
I'm definitely trying. Take "Into the Coven", for example. Great intro, lovely buildup, killer riff, I'm enjoying it. And then he comes in with a deflated scream and I'm out of it. I think his normal voice is cool, it's the falsettos that kill me.

Yes I can not stand King Diamond.
I love king diamond. Names my daughter Abigail. Having said that when my brother said he sounds like ELMO sometimes i pissed myself laughing. Still. Amazing riffs and it’s as metal as it gets.
I'm not previously familiar with Mercyful Fate, but listening now, his style seems very evocative of Rob Halford's. How do you feel about Priest?
I get that people have different tastes, but it's fucking crazy that this take is one of the most upvoted one here. King Diamond? Seriously? He's objectively one of the most gifted singers in the entire genre.
You try to take his baaAlls
Watch him become a gOoOoOd
If Vince Neil counts, it's Vince Neil. My least favorite is warrel Dane though. "Vince Neil sounds like cartman doing an impression of vince neil" agree on belladonna also, too soft
That's literally true for tesla now - bro literally starts off as an actual cartman taking a dump voice and does not stop, so gotta admire the dude's stamina for being a billion years old and still livin the lifestyle but youtube has guaranteed I'll never pay or attend a free tesla show again lol those bootlegs are fucken horrifying and have to be physically painful in real life for the audience if my pc speakers are icepicking me that hard in my precious ear holes

Lol, Among the Living is only the best album in their entire catalogue. Joey had pipes.
Ngl I love Joey belladonna
i’m a sucker for metal with higher vocals and he’s definitely one of the best imo
Overkill album singing is awful yeah. But I saw them live not too long ago, and because he's all old and shit, his vocals are actually way better and less parody like. Definitely a band that aged better live
Not sure if it really counts as metal, but if you've seen Dream Theater live in the past ten years, you have your answer.
...why on earth would Dream Theater not count as metal?
Some people really buy into the “only thrash/death/traditional is real metal” mentality Idk man I can’t understand it myself
Not fair, food poisoning
Devin stole the show
Yeah he did
Never got to see them live; LaBrie can’t pull it off?
Mickey Mouse from Knocked Loose!
Any band that becomes popular attracts hate just for existing
Arf! Arf!
Only upvoting cause I thought this was funny, the vocals still work with their music so I cant knock it
Can’t “knock” it ha
I just wanna know your opinion on Kaonashi in this case.🤣🤣🤣
Daron Malakian from SOAD I like how his voice compliments Serj Tankian’s voice but as a main singer he is atrocious
I used to hate his voice but it’s grown on me tbh
thats the main reason i do not like SOADs last two albums, too much Daron
Tbf the only reason Daron sings so much on those is because Serj didn’t want to do them.
MY COCK IS MUCH BIGGER THAN YOoOoURS
it's pretty hard to match against Serj, someone with potential to sing in the opera. Serj's voice is amazing, i feel like it's an acquired taste - definitely not what we're used to with metal, not everyone likes it, but once you listen to it a bit you feel the charm.
Seconded. I think he’s got a good sense for riffs and fills, but his voice is always screechy or anemic. It’s just blech.
i personally don't mind Joey Belladonna's vocals that much, but he doesn't sound very "metal" 😄
That's what makes them unique
Me, I'm so bad that I am banned from any microphone in a 50 meter radius
He has vocal damage from food poisoning. Hardly a bad singer, just permanently injured by extenuating circumstances.
I hear this take a lot, but I never understand it. I think he has one of the best voices in metal. I have never listened to them live, but on the studio albums he sounds great. Does he cross the line from being operatic to being whiny to you?
He’s never been good. He sounds decent on albums but he misses one out of every five notes live, since the beginning of his career.
I came here to see how many times I would see Chris Barnes.
Dead from Mayhem. Fucking atrocious.
Absolutely, one of the worst voices among popular bm
I sorta feel bad for Mustaine. He didn't want to sing but he couldn't find a singer so he was stuck. But now, anyone else would sound out of place, or make Megadeth sound completely different, especially with a Dio or Dickinson singing style.

This is just a personal opinion ofc but I actually pay very little attention to vocalists in metal music. I am primarily listening to this genre for the drumming.
I used to be here 100% for drumming as well. Then I discovered Steve DiGiorgio. Now I'm obsessed with picking up great bass play.
Oh absolutely! There are some really stellar bassists in metal for sure.
Varg is just dogshit. It breaks the immersion hearing his prepubescent squeals lol
Exactly, were his music only instrumental, i would blast that shit every minute of my life.
James Labrie
You have four amazingly talented musicians musicians and then him.
Idk why but this comment got me. I don’t think he’s awful, but he’s replaceable.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE By the way, wtf is all that hate on Belladonna? His vocals are awesome
I vote Belladonna.
Because this is fully subjective, even though I will likely die by saying this, I have to say... *Deep inhale* *Deep exhale.* Lemmy. I just have never ever enjoyed his voice, and am shocked that so many people do. Upvote for descriptive language!
He’s objectively not a very talented vocalist at all, but I can see why some people like him for the “rugged tough guy” sound.
yeah his voice was definitely an acquired taste for me so i definitely understand
Jamey Jasta
Throw in any East Coast "Hardcore" vocalist. Emo with a Planet Fitness membership
Did you know that he will be heard?
Chris Barnes He has sucked since day 1. *Butchered at Birth* and *Eaten Back to Life* get a pass, but it's a tenuous one. the most recent vocals that turned me off entirely is the new Sear Bliss. The music is great, but the vocals ruin it.

I can’t believe some of these comments😂😂😂
I feel you. 5min in, now angry for the rest of the day
Phil Anselmo. I don’t hate everything he’s done, especially most stuff off *NOLA*. But his voice reminds me of grimy gas stations in the summer.
That’s the first time I’ve heard that😂😂😂 he’s definitely one of the best metal vocalists of all time
Agreed. Anselmo has range, charisma and killer lyrics
He may have a good voice but he doesn't use the good parts of it very often. Most of the time he just sounds like a tryhard tough guy. Not only the voice itself but the way he says some of his lines is ear grating
Fuck Phil Anselmo, but this man in incredible
He's my favorite person in metal, but he is legitimately tone deaf. If you want a laugh, listen to Jail by Down on the live album
Me.
I do not like Tim Aymar of control denied at all. Ruins the album for me. It’s a testament to Cryptopsy’s None So Vile lineup that they made an incredible album with Dan Greening snorting like a pig Attila or whatever his name is from mayhem is dreadful Joey Belladonna
>Tim Aymar, Dan Greening Those two fits perfectly, IMO. Not sure what's the popular opinion is tho.

Michael C Hall?
Chris Barnes
Anyone saying King Diamond or Mercyful Fate gets the electric chair.
not the worst ever or anything, but lifelovers singer is soooo bad, he fucks up the instrumentals
As a fan of Lifelover, this is true I've grown to like it somehow, but the vocals are really bad
That dude from Knocked Loose. It was a toss up between him and Barnes, but at least Barnes was actually good at one point in time
Taylor Swift
her gutturals are pretty sick tho you can’t lie

not metal but i cant stand brian johnson or axl rose
Guns n roses counts as metal
Ivan Moody. He sounds like he's trying really hard to sound badass and it comes across like a twelve year old bowing up on a grown ass man.
Steve Souza from Exodus. I want Dukes back.
Vince Neil and Axl Rose

On Land of the Free, Somewhere Out in Space, Power Plant, Blast from the Past and No World Order he's amazing. He did great things... in studio. Live, however...
Chris barnes. BEEEEEEEREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW W W E E E E E E E EE E E E EEEEEEEEE did I scare you
Modern Chris Barnes. May not be the worst however he fell hard.
It's hard to say. Metal vocals are still a Wild West kind of scene, if you ask me. All sorts of young kids trying to figure out how to make the most brutal sound with minimal vocal damage. With so many vocalists out there, it's hard to rag on any of them for their sound except Chris Barnes.
that horrendous sounding pig from Gutalax
Fred Durst
Limp Biskit in Woodstock was better than studio
Beg to differ. Sometimes a song requires a higher-pitched voice in the background yelling SO WHATCHA GONNA DO NOW?!? And when it does, there’s only one man to call.
Do I dare mention Blaze Bayley?
Chad from Mudvayne these days
That dude in Knocked Loose is pretty goddamn awful
myself cause i try to go for a max cavalera fused with LG petrov (i believe how u spell his last name) but instead i sound like im just yelling after raging from video games🤣
King Diamond. He sounds like the vocalist of the Bee Gees trying to do metal.
James Labrie.
Danny Filth. Vince Neil.
Axel Rose hands down
Me. Totally me. (I've been in a number of car crashes, wrestling matches, and all sorts of anything else that has destroyed the useful parts of cookies and fry and being an ENT's nightmare)
Definitely not the worst but I've never been a fan of Jonathan Davis from Korn.
Axel Rose. I cannot stand his voice.
the dude from torsofuck
My top 3: Brian Johnson of AC/DC Caleb Schomo of Beartooth Marc Hudson of DragonForce
You think brian johnson out of all people is one of the worst vocalists??
Nattramn’s from silencer. They’re so bad it’s kinda funny.
Early Exodus era comes to mind
The guy who does the screamy vocals for the Powerviolence band Sulk or the vocalist for the Mincegore band Expired
The dude from silencer
