I think this is just comparing apples to oranges. Taylor Swift can't be as big as Michael Jackson because no one nowadays can be as big as Michael Jackson. That's not because MJ was that good or that much better than Swift, but because the internet has fragmented culture so thoroughly that it's impossible for anyone to be as ubiquitous as Michael Jackson.
Yep. Michael was to an extent pushed because there was monoculture where there was no internet and people couldn't create their own cultural bubbles with streaming services
