My wife loves this movie.
Idk if you saw the documentary called the contestant about the Japanese comedian that for over a year lived off of only sweepstakes winnings. Put him naked in a room and filmed him every second and aired it for all of Japan to see, and he had no idea. It was pretty crazy. Definitely check it out on hulu.
Still remember when I found out fudruckers two cities away from my hometown was a real place after watching that movie and thought I was going insaneI literally never even heard of it until that movie
I mean, it uses the f word too but we don’t hate on blazing saddles for using the N word, so I mean they get a pass since it’s a product of their time.
Not saying using these words in modern times is acceptable but you can’t undo history.
The message in idocracy was “dumb people are going to be mainstream and they are going to ruin everything by not caring about anything but sex, food, and entertainment.” I think has aged well. We have unfortunately seen too much of the idiocy social commentary come true in the past few years.
I thought 2 was alright. The story was a bit "meh," but the action and cinematics were fantastic. It was a far cry from the original, but still an alright movie overall
2 is terrible narratively, but its action set pieces are absolutely incredible. Even with the awful CG (I’m looking at you, Burly Brawl), the entertainment value holds up well without much competition. 👍
LOTR
Granted, people still watch and talk about it a lot so it feels like a recent movie.
It's 20 years old now.
I just went and watched it in theaters again and I swear it hit right in the feels just like it used to. It's such a masterpiece trilogy.
My local Alamo plays them every January, it’s such a nice change of pace to know in the winter months when it’s cold and dark that there will be LOTR in theatres
I rewatched the extended cuts over the winter and was pleasantly surprised how well they hold up. Even though the CGI moments aren’t quite cutting edge anymore, the visuals, music, acting is still amazing.
I’ve seen id4 more than any other movie. can recite the whole thing start to finish — a mandatory watch every july 4th.
the graphics hold up, the story is fun (first two acts are textbook perfect screenwriting), peak will smith. what’s not to like?
I like several already mentioned. I'll add:
Groundhog's Day
Fight Club even though there are sections of the movie I'd probably skip on re-watch
Shawshank Redemption
Toy Story (the original especially)
Terminator 2
The Fifth Element
Blade Runner (the original)
Inception
Edge of Tomorrow
Wall-E
Lion King
The Incredibles.
I could go on...
Linda Hamilton is such an underrated baddie. She went from just regular gal in T1 who was terrified and running from a future machine trying to kill her to this total baddie doing pull ups in prison and learning how to fight. She did it so convincingly.
Honestly, any of Keanu Reeves' movies all aged fairly damn well. Speed and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure are two great movies. Titan A.E. is a great animated film that is still a great watch.
So many.
* Hook
* Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
* Home Alone
* Jurassic Park
* Batman (the first Tim Burton one)
* Edward Scissor Hands
* Nightmare Before Christmas (I do like Tim Burton films)
* Pirates of the Caribbean
* Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
* Star Wars, Empires Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
* Aladdin
* The Big Labowski
* Dick Tracy
* The Hunt for Red October
EDIT: and a few Anime films from the 90s that are also great
* Princess Mononoke
* Ghost in the Shell
After writing the above list, I realized that movies were so much better when not everything was a Super Hero movie or a remake.
Even though the Star Wars movies are beloved by millennials, I don’t know if we can claim them as part of our generation. I’m considered an old millennial/xenial/almost Gen-X and RotJ came out before I was born.
Anchorman. Honestly I was really worried that some of the jokes wouldn’t hold up, or would be too cringy… but just like Ron himself it has aged like a fine wine.
The sequel is not nearly as good, but it's commentary on the 24 hour news cycle and corporate medias "if it bleeds it leads" approach to "news" is pretty poignant, and it's not surprising that Adam McKay got even more political soon after that.
Hear me out.....fight club. Some might view it as toxic masculinity but the movie is really about freeing yourself from corporatism and consumerism. For that reason alone it's one of my top movies I recommend. Especially in today's age.
I mean, if you watch that movie thinking the toxic masculinity was ultimately presented in a positive light you utterly missed the point of the movie lol
If you think toxic masculinity is the sole purpose of the movie you are mistaken. Both the OG author and the director confirmed its about consumerism and corporatism.
Absolutely. I was 15-ish when Fight Club came out (and I saw it), and it was my favorite movie for years and years. I watched it so much I got tired of it. Some 15 years went by and I hadn’t watched it, and had become a little bit jaded on it due to all the outside criticism that it (wrongly) receives. I streamed it on something last year, and was reminded entirely why I love it so much.
Watching it as a 40-year old feels so much different than watching it at 15 to 25, too. For me, I became more interested in the idea of going against societal norms and being an anarchist (to a smaller degree than portrayed in the film) than I did with the anti-consumerism.
This is such a polarizing movie, and I completely understand why. The first time I watched it I hated it. There were a couple of moments where I laughed hysterically, but the rest of the movie I sat there in silence because I thought it was slow, and that two hours of telling the same joke over and over (we get it, he’s weird) trying to get laughs was tiresome.
On subsequent watches, I actually think that’s an interesting think piece on the sadness of being weird/autistic while in poverty in rural America. Do I think it’s funny? Yeah, at times I guess… but if you go into it objectively and not focusing on the comedic aspect, it’s an interesting watch.
My kids are 12 and 10 and I thought they were going to love this movie. We've been going through all my favorite movies from the past and most have been big hits. This one did not connect. My 12 year old was waiting for the jokes and my 10 was lost on "when the plot would start". Ha. Maybe too young? I just kept saying It'll get better, but it didn't. I'd say it wasn't as good as i remember. But in college, it was just what I needed for a good laugh.
Yeah I think age is the problem. They haven’t experienced high school and they are too young to connect with the subtle/nuanced comedy, which is the only actual funny parts in it to me.
Without even considering too much more than uncle Rico or napoleons brother. I doubt most younger kids would get that joke. It takes being 16-20 to understand the concept of a guy who won’t give up his high school football dreams, or years of being the weird single guy in town to date the lady from the internet.
I graduated high school in 2000. There were quite a few people just like Napoleon Dynamite in my class. The people who liked the movie knew of people just like that. Those that didn't like the film just never met anyone like that.
off the top of my head from my highschool years-ish 2002-2006
City of God / Cicade De Deus
American Psycho
The Departed
Little Miss Sunshine
Oldboy
Adaptation
Sin City
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Shaun of the Dead
OLDER - Pulp Fiction, Goonies, The Outsiders, Big Lebowski, Fargo, Seven, Fear and Loathing, Dazed and Confused, American Beauty, Menace 2 Society, Boyz N tha Hood, Tombstone
I still get pissed off just thinking about when they brake protocol and let the attacked/infected person back on the ship. Rules are there for a reason.
Just watch Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory with my family, and even my 5yo loved it. Gene Wilder's acting and the imagery of the factory still give the same awe.
I was a big Josie and the Pussycats girl and I still am. I loved that movie so much, I had the soundtrack and my parents got so sick of it that they would put on the radio 😂
Wow I have loved that movie for a long time and I love love love Cusack but his character is insufferable and if my friend went back to that old-relationship-stirring-up douchebag I would tell her to run.
Soundtrack is excellent though.
I just watched Kindergarten Cop yesterday and it's still a really fun movie.
Hollywood keeps pushing Dwayne Johnson as the new tough action hero doing family films, but he just doesn't hold a candle to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
I gotta disagree with that one. Comedy wise, ya Robin Williams is a genius, but content wise, it kinda aged like milk. His character in that movie is not a hero, what he did was really messed up, and the judge was right about him. But the movie frames his wife and her new bf as the villiains.
Even as a kid I never really saw Sally Fields' and Pierce Brosnan's characters as villains per se but I do see your point.
I don't think the movie necessarily frames it that way... probably as we get older w life experience our perspective shifts and as adults we can sympathize w Sally Fields' character more.
I watched American Pie 2 for the first time in 20 years recently, and it’s way better than the first one and has easily one of the best millennial soundtracks. Stiffler’s character has not aged well but it is in interesting look into a different era where being the “big asshole” was more accepted as an archetype
I watched “Everything is Illuminated” the other day. Probably the first time since 2005 when it came out.
Holy shit is it still good. Just, one of the best movies I’ve seen.
Never Ending Story , Great Muppet Caper, Trading Places, Die Hard, Rocky, Godfather 1 and 2, All Monty Python Movies, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction,

Legally Blonde ✨
Yes!! This is what I was going to say. My dog’s even named after Elle Woods!
The answer is always Legally Blonde. It’s like my version of 42.
The Truman Show was way ahead of its time
My wife loves this movie. Idk if you saw the documentary called the contestant about the Japanese comedian that for over a year lived off of only sweepstakes winnings. Put him naked in a room and filmed him every second and aired it for all of Japan to see, and he had no idea. It was pretty crazy. Definitely check it out on hulu.
what the fuck
I honestly felt pretty bad for the dude. I would not have lasted a month. It was mentally draining just watching the documentary.
i can imagine! i can’t decide whether to look it up or not
The record scratch moments where they stop for on-scene ad placements is so- This podcast is brought to you by Better Help
Came here to say this!
Aged well… graphics wise? That’s 100% the first Jurassic Park. Aged well… humor wise? Idioracy. Dodgeball.
Jurassic Park is perfect. There is no filler; every scene moves the film forward!
![gif](giphy|2Z3lgZOhISkYU)
Clever girl!
My wife is going to watch idiocracy for the first time tonight with dinner!!!
Its not even a comedy documentary but a real documentary now
Right down to the crocs ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
We quote it in our daily lives because it's VERY relevant now.
Yeah it actually really depresses me now.
You could watch Jurassic Park today and if they updated the computer shots, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
Same with a lot of Titanic. Helps when a lot of the scenes are at night.
And set 115 years ago
if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball
Oh shit! How could I have forgotten Jurassic Park and Idiocracy?! Well remembered!
Still remember when I found out fudruckers two cities away from my hometown was a real place after watching that movie and thought I was going insaneI literally never even heard of it until that movie
I just introduced my kid to JP. Can confirm. Still holds up. Is one of my fave movies!!!
Eh...I wouldn't say Idiocracy has aged particularly well. It kind of felt to me on a recent rewatch like calling someone the r word.
Office Space.
Hell yeah. My husband and I quote this movie at least once a week still 😆 ![gif](giphy|eCLe22tOkYfTi)
I can’t say “that would be great” or “it would be great if…” in a professional setting bc of that movie lol
What’s crazy is that movie is about a software company. The change between now and 25 years back is insane
My old job treated Office Space as a training film.
Anytime someone at work doesn't get the quote someone tosses out, we tell them to go watch it. I wouldn't say I'm missing it, Bob
10 things I hate about you ![gif](giphy|wBRaGiv8smKqI|downsized)
Yes, came to add this one - recently rewatched and still amazing
this one is so good. fun fact, i lived in tacoma for a while, and they filmed it there! that high school is stunning!
💔
Shrek, and The Matrix.
Upvote for matrix 1-2 and 3
Lol what a weird way to write 1-3
I really disliked 2 and 3. But after the 4th came out they are really good compared...
It’s heartbreaking how meh 2-4 are 🥲
shrek yes, matrix no
The sandlot
Period pieces usually age well. But I still love this as much as I did when I was 8 years old.
They do i could watch angels in the outfield or Casper and it would be like i was 7 again
You’re killing me smalls!
It also ages well in the opposite direction. I'm sure your parents or even grandparents would have liked it.
It’s funny bcz the post right above this is Independence Day and that’s my Fourth of July tradition
Any of the Alien series.
Any?
Definitely meant Resurrection specifically
LOTR Granted, people still watch and talk about it a lot so it feels like a recent movie. It's 20 years old now. I just went and watched it in theaters again and I swear it hit right in the feels just like it used to. It's such a masterpiece trilogy.
It truly is a masterpiece and The Fellowship of the Ring is quite possibly the best film ever made.
My local Alamo plays them every January, it’s such a nice change of pace to know in the winter months when it’s cold and dark that there will be LOTR in theatres
The Ride of the Rohirim was made for the big screen
The extended cuts, yes. Not the normal movies imo.
I rewatched the extended cuts over the winter and was pleasantly surprised how well they hold up. Even though the CGI moments aren’t quite cutting edge anymore, the visuals, music, acting is still amazing.
Sadly, Idiocracy
Too real
![gif](giphy|3otPoEiEGXh41xKGdO|downsized)
It’s what plants crave.
Toilet water? That sounds dumb
![gif](giphy|61YZsbEMkg8rm)
This was my exact first thought
I bring this up all the time and tell people you need to watch this. It’s staggering how many people still don’t know what electrolytes are.
I watched this again last weekend. "Go away I'm bating!"
It’s a documentary. Sadly.
I recently watched The Big Lebowski, and it has aged well.
Well that’s just like, your opinion man.
🤣 💯
It's a masterpiece. I can't get my gen Z colleagues too watch it but it's really their loss.
My daughter loves this movie and quotes from it often. She’s a cool chick
Idk if it hits the same way for gen Z. The dude is a very Millenial/Gen X character.
I made my kids watch it. (They were older teens at the time.)
Instant cult status
It really ties the generation together
The dude abides.

Point Break.
Titan A.E. is a great one. The soundtrack was awesome as well!
Right?! God, I watched that movie so fucking much as a kid. I desperately wished so badly for a follow up movie
Speed is still one of my favorite movies!
Matilda ![gif](giphy|lUI5QYdWkz8QENIDCx|downsized)

Yeah ... that's a good point. I certainly didn't see any of the original trilogy in the theaters. But, they still felt like movies I grew up with.
Oh for sure, and technically they still fit the question, I just feel like it doesn’t really fit the spirit of the question.
A New Hope was re-released in theaters in 1997 (maybe 98?) so that makes them ours as well.
Hook has to be one of my favorite all time movies! Makes me cry every time now as an adult 😭
I know! Such an underrated movie. Dustin Hoffman was brilliant as Hook. And the scene when the pirates play baseball is so good.
Mean Girls
Anchorman. Honestly I was really worried that some of the jokes wouldn’t hold up, or would be too cringy… but just like Ron himself it has aged like a fine wine.
They've done studies, you know, 60% of the time it works, every time. LMFAO that is one of many quotes I throw around regularly because of that movie.
The sequel is not nearly as good, but it's commentary on the 24 hour news cycle and corporate medias "if it bleeds it leads" approach to "news" is pretty poignant, and it's not surprising that Adam McKay got even more political soon after that.
Back to the future
I feel like the mom-trying-to-make-out-with-him thing got creepier as time went by but I mostly agree with you.
Hear me out.....fight club. Some might view it as toxic masculinity but the movie is really about freeing yourself from corporatism and consumerism. For that reason alone it's one of my top movies I recommend. Especially in today's age.

Honestly, as an anarchist, I hate that fascists co-opted that movie.
You may enjoy Bottoms, a satire about a girls' fight club in high school
I love that movie!
Empire Records.
I came hear to say that and….”SHOPLIFTER”
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle Lord of the Rings All the Harry Potter Movies The Matrix Dodgeball
Whilst the Harry Potter movies have aged fine, they have been tainted by JK Rowling's TERF behaviour.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show. My gen x and boomer friends and family agree, it's just fuckin gold. I can't believe that it's turning 50 next year
Clueless
Seven is still worth a watch.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!
shrek 1 and 2 The CGI still holds up and the album covers are straight bangers
Napoleon Dynamite's held up well.
I knew tons of folks like that. I love the movie. Makes sense.

Children of Men. 28 days Later. Superbad
Criminal I had to go this far down to find Children of Men. CoM and Idiocracy are unnervingly prophetic.
Zoolander
“Alien”. Made in 70s, still chilling and visually captivating, still one of the best female main characters in the history.
I still get pissed off just thinking about when they brake protocol and let the attacked/infected person back on the ship. Rules are there for a reason.
Can't Hardly Wait.
I forgot about the soundtrack to this!!
The Mummy 1999 Event Horizon
The fact that Interstellar used the wormhole metaphor from Event Horizon proves it has staying power.
Tropic Thunder
Classic movie. Probably my favorite comedy. ![gif](giphy|RD02Grpyh6v4I|downsized)
Literally THE ONLY MOVIE in which I can even slightly stomach Tom Cruise. That's a feat in itself cause I fucking hate that dude.
forgetting sarah marshall
Vertical Limit & Gladiator. Also love The Count of Mont Cristo
High Fidelity Great soundtrack, very quotable. One of the best movies that break the 4th wall
Wow I have loved that movie for a long time and I love love love Cusack but his character is insufferable and if my friend went back to that old-relationship-stirring-up douchebag I would tell her to run. Soundtrack is excellent though.

A Goofy Movie.
I just watched Kindergarten Cop yesterday and it's still a really fun movie. Hollywood keeps pushing Dwayne Johnson as the new tough action hero doing family films, but he just doesn't hold a candle to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Kill Bill 1&2, Inglorious Basterds
Little Miss Sunshine
Mrs. Doubtfire
I gotta disagree with that one. Comedy wise, ya Robin Williams is a genius, but content wise, it kinda aged like milk. His character in that movie is not a hero, what he did was really messed up, and the judge was right about him. But the movie frames his wife and her new bf as the villiains.
You would probably enjoy this classic YouTube video. A recut trailer reframing Mrs. Doubtfire as a horror movie. https://youtu.be/1Ckv_Dz-Sio

I don't think the movie necessarily frames it that way... probably as we get older w life experience our perspective shifts and as adults we can sympathize w Sally Fields' character more.
Superbad
I really think Superbad really captures what it was like to be a highschool millennial (at least from a male perspective)
Scream, Urban Legend, I know What You Did Last Summer, The Lost Boys, Final Destination, The Faculty, Idle Hands, Cherry Falls, Bride of Chucky, etc.

Willow, I watched it again before the series came out. I was wondering if I was about to ruin my childhood. It held up really well.
Independence Day is 28 years old and still, bar one or 2 scenes, holds up amazingly well.
The fast and the furious, RIP Paul Walker
Romeo+Juliet. It was a stroke of genius to make it with the original 16th century lines.
The Big Lebowski. It has only gotten better with time.
I watched American Pie 2 for the first time in 20 years recently, and it’s way better than the first one and has easily one of the best millennial soundtracks. Stiffler’s character has not aged well but it is in interesting look into a different era where being the “big asshole” was more accepted as an archetype
LOTR
I watched “Everything is Illuminated” the other day. Probably the first time since 2005 when it came out. Holy shit is it still good. Just, one of the best movies I’ve seen.
