Yeah, I was going to say, my son has four pairs of these. Columbia makes them as part of their line of fishing clothes. My son wears them for everything from fishing to hiking to school.
I knew a kid in school that would wear them exclusively as shorts 90% of the time. When a cold day rolled around and the legs got zipped on, they were a discernibly darker shade.
Oh man, knees open or around my ankles was my look in middle school. Dress code prohibited shorts so this was also good for some extra ventilation, but of course the main purpose was to have the baggy grunge look.
Haha this brings me back to middle school when all the guys had them. For a brief time it was fashionable (in their minds at least lol) to wear different colored ones and then trade the legs with their friends, so the shorts would be one color, and each leg would be a different color. Good times.
I had a light purple pair from limited too that zipped off at the shins and above the knees so capris or shorts. They were so bad ass. I called the color grape ice.
had them and loved them. Used to walk to school so in the morning it was cold. But by lunch and the walk home i could convert to shorts. was a blessing
She allows me to wear short shorts and cowboy boots with her in public because she knows it makes me happy, despite hey intense dislike of it. I'm just choosing battles with the zipoffs
I remember once I took the train from New York to Washington DC while wearing a pair of pants like this. The morning of the trip, it was about 55° in New York, but by the time I got off the train in DC it was close to 90°, so as soon as I stepped out of Union Station, I zipped off the legs. It was glorious.
2 pairs.
Khaki pair were a bit more stout but tore jumping a fence senior year.
Black pair, the zippers broke on the legs but incredibly comfortable so I wore the shorts for like 5 years.
I have a few, they are my fishing pants. Absolutely perfect for hiking the lake, river or creek and getting dirty. I swear by them. Columbia makes the best ones.
Never had them but I thought these were genius and still do, my younger brother (3 yrs gap) told me people in his age group like to shit on them which surprised me.
Used to wear them to work. We were required to wear pants but it was nice in the summer time to take my boots off, zip the legs off, and throw on some sandals for my commute home. Inevitably I would lose the zip off parts and they become just shorts after that. I still have a couple that I wear as shorts.
I loved those when I was a kid. I hated (still hate) long pants but you were not allowed to wear shorts in middle school so with these I could have shorts as soon as school let out. Best thing about being an adult, no long pants.
I still do, Eddie Bauer makes my favorite ones. First ascent ones are great, done loads of field work in them. Sometimes I just un zip the knees if I’m hiking through brush but need a breeze in the hot desert sun.

Still do! Still buy them!!! Cargo pockets to hold the sleeves! Can’t beat them! So multifunctional especially when you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, hiking, camping, etc!!
Had a couple pairs, usually wore them for fishing. Gotta pair them with a wide brim hat, long sleeve T-shirt and a pair of water shoes when on the lake, then unzip the legs, put on a baseball cap and a pair of sandals for the ride home.
I didn't want to take my clothes off for gym so I would wear these pants and unzip the bottoms, then have a button up shirt over a T-shirt that I would take off and put back on after.
I was very sweaty the rest of the day.
I thought I was the coolest shit in elementary school and the beginnings of middle school because of these pants. Plot twist, I was not cool at all. Lol
I totally wear them now! Found a pair at a sporting goods store and they make the perfect outdoor concert/festival pants honestly. Too hot? Unzip, instant shorts. Rain? Zip em up they're water resistant!
I owned a few of them when I was backpacking and I still have some now. They're practical af, turns into shorts, has pockets for items. All I see is a win.
I had one pair, and I did not like them. I can see the use if someone was like hiking or something where they might need the extra leg protection at certain parts of the day or certain parts of the hike, but as a kid in the midwest they just seemed pointless.
Had a few pairs. I had 3 of the same kind from a hiking and canoeing trip I took. Very light weight and dried fast, I would wear them when I worked as a dishwasher in high school. I also had a few pairs of long shorts (judo pants/ male capris?) That had lower legs to zip off.
I got some for my bday in middle school one year. I loved them. I have a couple pairs now for camping/hiking and they're great.
When it was hot I used to open the back of the knee to get some ventilation. Once time I was dropping an assignment on my teacher's desk and some douche told me to zip up my pants and called me a faggot or a loser or something derogatory. I heard later, after he showed up with a busted face, that he got in a fight at the mall and someone hit him in the face with a skateboard. Well deserved.
Yeah, and I loved them. But I found that i never zipped the legs back on so now I just wear cargo shorts.
But, they were the best swim trunks I’ve ever owned

I have them now. They are great for travel and hiking.
Same! I have several pairs of REI Sahara's specifically. They're incredible hiking pants!
Maybe some nice ones would be ok. I always had the cheap of the cheap and hated them. Snap off were better in my mind but less flexible
Same
I use them for disc golf along with a sun shirt and a wide brim hiking hat. I'm pretty sure that's peak millennial.
Seriously. I’m wearing a pair now at work IDGAF
Yeah, I was going to say, my son has four pairs of these. Columbia makes them as part of their line of fishing clothes. My son wears them for everything from fishing to hiking to school.
I was gonna say, I still have a pair that I specifically use for hiking and backpacking.
Yeah mam
Had them!? I thought they were awesome. I had them in like 4 colors. I was not very popular.
Dude mixing the legs was my favorite.
Oh god you brought me back to middle school cringe fest
I knew a kid in school that would wear them exclusively as shorts 90% of the time. When a cold day rolled around and the legs got zipped on, they were a discernibly darker shade.
Sounds like a sensible kid. I can imagine getting teased about the legs though.
I don’t remember anyone really teasing him luckily but he would definitely get double takes until people realized why his legs were darker.
Oh man, knees open or around my ankles was my look in middle school. Dress code prohibited shorts so this was also good for some extra ventilation, but of course the main purpose was to have the baggy grunge look.
Fight the power!
I would always lose the legs and defeat the purpose of convertible pants :(
I would do one leg lol
I had the ones that zipped off twice, once to capris and again to shorts. From Limited Too lol
So many zippers you must have looked like a Kingdom Hearts character.
Same! Mine were red “swishy pants”
Absolutely same from Limited Too lol
I was just going to comment the same! Bright yellow ones from Limited Too 🫢🥴
There was a teacher at my high school who had these, but his pair zipped off super high up so they became short-shorts.
Nothing cuter than zip off capris
Yes same! Two different colors.
Peak pant design
I think I had those exact ones lol. They were awesome until I lost one of the lower halves and then they just became shorts.
Like mitch hedberg used to say. Escalator closed, temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience. 😆
Back in the day? These are pretty standard for hiking, especially backpacking. They have multiple brands/styles at REI.
Haha this brings me back to middle school when all the guys had them. For a brief time it was fashionable (in their minds at least lol) to wear different colored ones and then trade the legs with their friends, so the shorts would be one color, and each leg would be a different color. Good times.
Hell yeah
My husband def still has some of these bad boys
How do you handle that kind of sexual energy?!
I had a light purple pair from limited too that zipped off at the shins and above the knees so capris or shorts. They were so bad ass. I called the color grape ice.
I had the light blue ones. Still dream about getting another pair.
Yes, and yet somehow my parents were surprised when I told them I’m a lesbian.
"We had no idea you were gay growing up!" How many straight guys have a mermaid phase growing up?!?!
had them and loved them. Used to walk to school so in the morning it was cold. But by lunch and the walk home i could convert to shorts. was a blessing
Honestly I'd love a pair for my son. He wears shorts under his pants because the mornings are cool and then afternoon it's super hot here.
Back in the day? Still own them. Make for great hiking pants or lake/river pants
Yes and it pisses me off to no end that my wife won't let me buy any now
They're pants, buy some
She allows me to wear short shorts and cowboy boots with her in public because she knows it makes me happy, despite hey intense dislike of it. I'm just choosing battles with the zipoffs
Of course!
I'm back to buying them. Pretty nice for hiking/camping/traveling.
I am wearing some at this very moment 🤣
Back in the day? I have 4 pairs in my closet ready to roll, son.
Yessss!
I had a pair in High School.
I have two pair of those now, leg vents baby!
Guilty.
I have a pair of kakhi and green pants like this I use for backpacking. Shorts on the day, pants at night.
I have a pair that I bought back in high school…my scrawny ass still fits into them.
I had them and loved them!!
I miss my pairs.
My dad insisted I have a pair for fishing. I still have them.
My person, I still own them and wore them last week. Nice convertible pants, quality item.
I had a pair as a teen! They're readily for sale still: https://www.theiconic.co.nz/woven-zip-off-cargo-pants-2084379.html
Best pants to wear on deployment!
the BEST for hiking or outdoors stuff
My husband has pants like this
Used to wear them to work. We were required to wear pants but it was nice in the summer time to take my boots off, zip the legs off, and throw on some sandals for my commute home. Inevitably I would lose the zip off parts and they become just shorts after that. I still have a couple that I wear as shorts.
I still buy them, great for outdoor activities
Wear mine hiking all the time. Highly recommend.
I loved those when I was a kid. I hated (still hate) long pants but you were not allowed to wear shorts in middle school so with these I could have shorts as soon as school let out. Best thing about being an adult, no long pants.
Damn I wish I had these now tbh

Hell yeah
Oh yesss. Shants!
Adidas tearaways were the real deal for a pants to shorts instant transformation 😂
Yes but I never wore them as shorts
Had them growing up in Phoenix but it was always so hot I only ever wore them as shorts lol
Don’t have a pair currently but I will if I see them! Loved those things
I didn't want to take my clothes off for gym so I would wear these pants and unzip the bottoms, then have a button up shirt over a T-shirt that I would take off and put back on after. I was very sweaty the rest of the day.
I had that exact pair pictured, and miss them so much
loved these! but eventually it became too hard to keep the pieces together, and just ended up using them as shorts✅
I still have some for hiking.
I use them at work on jobs and take them off when I sweat or my boss leaves.
omg yes. they were baby blue :)
I wear them as shorts so often if I put the legs on them they are two different colors.
I was literally just talking about this to my wife after watching South Park
Yes.. and I still have some for moto camping
I have 6 pairs, best pants/shorts i'v ever had
Fucking love these, my wife is 8 years younger then me and make fun of my “old man pants”
I liked to unzip the knees. It was cool to me.
No but I had jorts that hung so low like I was auditioning to be in a Limp Bizkit video or something
I still have a pair of now but they just don’t look right on me anymore lol. They were those weird ones with like the bungie cord drawstrings.
I had two pairs in high school and I loved them. They were prefect for the Midwest falls and springs. I wish I had a couple of pairs right now.
I almost forgot about these bad boys. Let me go see if I can buy a pair.
Please bring them back at an affordable price. I miss these dearly.
Just you and my dad.
Loved mine. Would still use if I were an active camper.
No, my dad did.
My parents bought me a pair when I was twelve and I remember feeling so next-level cool.
I still see them around all the time.
What do you mean back in the day, this right here is a must for any camping/hiking trip.
Fuck yeah
I thought I was the coolest shit in elementary school and the beginnings of middle school because of these pants. Plot twist, I was not cool at all. Lol
I remember these 😭😂😂
Yes and I just bought a pair last night.
Definitely had a few pairs while rocking an Atticus shirt wearing a pair of D3 Osiris. I was 11 or 12.
Had a few pair back in elementary/middle school.
Just bought my first pair. Lol. About to go hiking.
I had them.
I need these back in my life. Recess was amazing with these bad boys.
These are still my dads airport pants 25 years later
I am wearing them now. Perfect travel pants for the airport.
They really fucked up your knee if you fell on the zipper at recess
I wear Columbia's version of these daily as work pants.
I am absolutely the type of dork who would wear these if they still made them.
Yes I did and I loved them. I’ve been waiting for them to come back into style and they haven’t yet.
Yes! And the tear away jogging pants!
i would kill for a short shorts version of this
I had this exact model and color
Had? Still have and wear a couple lol
I totally wear them now! Found a pair at a sporting goods store and they make the perfect outdoor concert/festival pants honestly. Too hot? Unzip, instant shorts. Rain? Zip em up they're water resistant!
I had a pair
Yes. They were men’s (I was a heavy set youngster) and bright af yellow/orange with navy blue accents. I loved them 😂
I have these for hiking and backpacking. But not for wearing on the regular.
What do you mean “back in the day”? 😰
I used to have those when I was a kid
I had 3/4 shorts they went down to my knees.
Columbia ones are cheap on Amazon and have lasted me many hiking trips
I'm wearing them in this moment
I owned a few of them when I was backpacking and I still have some now. They're practical af, turns into shorts, has pockets for items. All I see is a win.
I had one pair, and I did not like them. I can see the use if someone was like hiking or something where they might need the extra leg protection at certain parts of the day or certain parts of the hike, but as a kid in the midwest they just seemed pointless.
Wish I still had some, those were awesome
This reminds me of the black sports pants with the two white stripes on the sides that would snap off. Man I forgot about those.
Yeah I had them as the kid but almost always wore them as shorts, so when they got washed the top part was way more faded than the bottoms lol 🤦
The first time I zipped the legs off, the shorts got so sun bleached I was never able to put them back together again. 1/10, will not buy again.
Really wanted those as a kid, was always camping and thought they'd be great
i had the triple whammy ones…pants/capris/shorts 😎
No, it was just you. The various companies that produced these pants made them with you, *and only you*, in mind.
Had? I still use them my guy
Hell yeah!!!!
I had these right after I got done with my snap-off athletic pants.
Don’t forget the pull apart pants with buttons :p
I loved these and felt like I was the only one... no one else at my school had them.
Only dads wore them in the 90s
I remember them, not sure I ever owned a pair.
I’m a woman and I still have a pair of these for hiking/traveling. 🤷🏻♀️
I had the goth, Tripp version. While not as versatile, I also had their pants that went from flared to straight legged.
I rock these everyday at work
No, it was just you. They made those pants specifically for you.
I had yellow and orange ones in the late 90s
Had a few pairs. I had 3 of the same kind from a hiking and canoeing trip I took. Very light weight and dried fast, I would wear them when I worked as a dishwasher in high school. I also had a few pairs of long shorts (judo pants/ male capris?) That had lower legs to zip off.
No you are the only person that's ever had them. We actually haven't even heard of them before. Did you invent these pant/shorts?
I have some now....
I wore them to school like every day 💀
My 34 year old husband still wears a pair.
Lee Pipes cuz I ain't no nerd.
Literally wearing a pair now, zipped off of course because it's hot as balls here.
My ex husband and his groomsmen all wore them for our wedding. Pants for the ceremony, and then into shorts for the reception.
Is that why he's your ex husband?
Nope, it was my idea. I wanted everyone to be comfortable. We were on a pier.
My mommy ordered them for me doing back to school shopping in the jc penny catalog.
Last time I had them was circa 2002.
These are my go to for summer travel. They pack small, and are versatile. I call them adventure pants.
I had one when I was a teenager!
I had them in HS and wore them all the time. Gave them away bc it was no longer my style and I honestly wish I still had them.
Haha no no no not just u, I had a pair of maybe I had two purr 😉
Still have some Kuhl that do this. I wear them hiking, kayaking, pretty much anywhere outdoorsy
Had em and hated them. Saw a kid walking around Walmart the other day wearing them. Had to cringe a little...
I had a few pairs as a kid.
i have two pairs i just bought at the Columbia store. Great find.
Yeah, and I loved them. But I found that i never zipped the legs back on so now I just wear cargo shorts. But, they were the best swim trunks I’ve ever owned
Shit I just bought a pair from Costco
I had these but without the zippers and also had the snap on pants too they were my favorite
Oh man I loved mine. 🥰 I wore them mostly to raves, but they were fantastic. I wish I had another pair.
