*Your Woman* by White Town stands out as a very distinct memory of one of those first songs that grabbed me as a kid and made me want to start exploring music.
My mom took me to HMV to buy their CD (remember buying entire albums because you liked a single?) but the employee advised her the album might not be appropriate for a 9 year old, and recommended she instead get me the [Now! 2 (Canadian)](https://www.discogs.com/release/1434436-Various-Now-2) compilation CD as it had *Your Woman* on it. I ended up discovering so many other all-time classics on that compilation (like *No Diggity*, *Da Dip*, *Spiderwebs* etc), and I wish I could go back in time and thank that HMV employee for the great recommendation!
Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins. I loved the music video and had my mom buy me the CD from the store. I listened to it on repeat, which my sister hated.
The weird hip girl at my high school made
**Electric Feel by MGMT**
the walk out music for our volleyball team and it completely changed my taste in music for the rest of my life
I listened to so much early MGMT when I left home on my own for the first time. I went to Hong Kong for two weeks with no real plans and this album was playing nonstop. I specifically remember jamming to this song on the sky tram in the way to the big Buddha statue on the mountain. MGMT really steered my music taste to what it is today
MGMT in conjunction with discovering marijuana for the first time changed my taste in music forever. Imagine getting high for one of the first times ever and listening to Oracular Spectacular. Absolutely paradigm shifting.
Yeah, I was trying to work it out in my head. Oldest possible would be '97, Aerials was released 2002.
My brother is '98 and I am '87 - he LOVED my music when he was younger. He would sing with me as I played "it's been awhile" by Staind on my guitar.
My (86) younger sister (97) loved listening to whatever metal I was playing back then. She’d laugh hysterically at the “monster” vocals and thrash dance around the house. Kids are awesome sometimes
Same. We had a small local skiing hill. I remember it blaring over the loudspeakers along with Beautiful Day - U2, and stupid girls - pink like it was just yesterday.
Every time I hear it I’m instantly transported back to riding the lift on that sunny day.
Music is amazing..
I used to think this song, A Beautiful Life, and lot of 90s pop/dance songs like This is your Night by Amber or Runaway by Real McCoy were like old classics that they played at skating rinks.
My dad only listened to classic rock and Italian music, he was from Italy. My mom never listened to music. So when I heard pop music, I really had no idea that it was current and new music.
First heard this song when I was a dumb careless kid living abroad in Europe. I’m almost 39 now. I’ve done well but there have been so many forks in the road that easily could have led things to turn out differently. This song has meant so many different things to me at different stages of my life. It is a masterpiece.
*fixed typos yikes!
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. I was like 11 or 12 but it completely altered my music tastes. I only listened to my parents classic rock type of stuff and country until then. Now I listen to anything and everything. My Spotify algorithm struggles to figure out what I want.
Concurring heavily on this. 1981er here. It is well known that middle school generally sucks and is an awkward age. But what if you’re starting to discover your taste in music when a phenomenon like grunge bursts on the scene? It was mind-blowingly incredible. We were “organically discovering” this new fangled type of music, on the brand new crystal clear CD format no less, and it was completely life changing and brain altering. Black Hole Sun especially, which even got tons of radio play, was unique in its chord structure and format, with this long mood-setting intro (actually that was The Day I Tried to Live). And there was so much of this all at once! Stone Temple Pilots Plush and Creep were up there. Weezer Undone! Nirvana In Bloom! Everything I heard everywhere was like WTF is this??!!
Aside from how this transformed the music industry and culture, is impossible to put into words how it molded my young brain into the musician I am today. It was pure fucking magic and I’m fairly convinced that 99% of humans in the history of the earth have not experienced an era like this.
Hashtag belssed.
>"New Slang" by The Shins
YESSSSS. It's been almost 20 years since I first heard that song and it STILL gives me chills because of how good it is.
I just recently got the same type of vibe from [this song](https://youtu.be/rk2qfn3oU0U?si=Pg0IBLeCiXI7xu3M) but it's in spanish... although tbf I understand the language and lyrics but I still have no idea wth it's about lol.
Fun fact, Zach Braff sent a CD with all the songs he wanted alongside his script when he was trying to get Garden State made, so the songs are very much an intentional part of the DNA of the film.
On a Plain and Drain You by Nirvana was my big kick-the-the-jaw for getting into Nirvana. All great songs though. Incesticide remains my favorite album though
I remember where I was when I first saw the premier of the video on Much Music. This wasn't the first song in my life to blow my mind, but it absolutely blew my mind the most. It's like my musical brain was suddenly online.
Shouldn’t have to scroll so far to find such an awesome answer. My friends and I played the Jagged Little Pill album constantly in junior high. It’s just so good.
Numb for me but fuck Hybrid Theory is the shit too. And Bring Me To Life by Evanescence. In The End is the popular one though Numb will always be my fav LP song. God what a privilege to grow up with songs by LP and Evanescence.
Mine too. It is still my all-time favorite record to date. I was so upset when Chester died. His was the only famous persons death that ever really affected me.
But what about To the Moon and Back? OMG, that song is a fucking masterpiece to this day. I love the spaceship sounds in the beginning and the LYRICS!!
Man, this is a close one for me too. There were a few songs with this one that all came out at the same time. I burnt them into a CD and it was like my whole life for a while.
Same. When my parents cleared out their storage room a couple years ago, I found one of those CDs; had Trapt, Creed, Disturbed, Rammstein, and Bullet for my Valentine on it. Fuckin' banger lol.
Blue by Eiffel 65.
When I first heard that shit on radio it blew my mind.
It was night time and my mom was driving me home from karate class when it came on. I remember the light from the radio dashboard and just the typical night lights going past. It’s such a cozy memory.
Anything from Hybrid Theory linkin park. Got it and a portable cd player at 6. Also got a nickelback cd but the kids on the bus said they were lame & it didn’t resonate with me besides How you remind me.
“drive” by incubus. Long car rides on the 5 south in los angeles was a regular thing at that time and I vividly remember being in the backseat of my parents car falling in love with that song
According to my parents, the Meow Mix commercial theme song. Apparently I would come flying through the house at toddler top speed when it came on, and would riot if someone tried to change the channel before it was over.
Of songs I have an actual memory of listening to, *Bohemian Rapsody* (by Queen, obviously), when I was about 13.
I was about 5 or 6 and distinctly remember REM’s Losing my Religion. It was shortly after my sister passed away and I felt drawn to the song for some unknown reason.
1993, U2 - Mysterious Ways is the first song I ever remember hearing on the radio and thinking it was good.
1996, Spice Girls - Wannabe was the first time I liked a song for myself, as something I liked and not something my parents were listening to.
2001, The Chain - Fleetwood Mac made me start paying attention to music seriously and exploring genres.
I feel like there were a few, but the one that leaves the biggest impact is probably "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis. Not exactly sure why, but there's just something about it.
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. I'm fairly sure it was a cover, but damn, she could sang.
Edit: It was by Dolly Parton, duh! Forgive me, father, for I am dumb.
No doubt, im just a girl
It was the beginning of grade 7, I was the new kid at school and had just heard this song, thought it was awesome instantly, waited for it to play on the radio again with a blank tape at the ready, and it took a few days before I caught it.
Took the tape and my Walkman to school, shared the song with my new classmates, the cool girls all laughed and told me it sucked. I was bummed but moved on, became friends with them that day despite them having terrible taste in music ;)
a week or two later they discovered this awesome new song and played it for me.
I decided to just let it go and not remind them this is the song they laughed at me for listening to, just said “oh, ya that’s no doubt, I’ve known this song for FOREVER”
i also had pink in my hair (and a pink neck because I dyed with food colouring lol) which they thought was weird and asked me a bunch of dumb questions on my first day like “did you get in a fight with a grapefruit” and witty stuff like that. then eventually when Gwen was first seen with pink hair they all dyed it too (pretty sure this was for “simple kind of life” music video from the follow up album,) I wasn’t friends with these “cool” girls then, by the time of Gwen’s pink hair I had found people who were actually cool and much less judgmental and 25 years later am still friends with many of them
That’s it that’s my story,
I’m getting shivers just from knowing I’m gonna listen to New Slang after reading all the comments
Needle in the Hay by Elliot Smith checks the same boxes for me
[Ray of Light - Madonna](https://open.spotify.com/track/4Fpsa3pYc3gozrxHRRPvR6?si=8b2FOG1OQxGL6ZNph1CKyA&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A6cuNyrSmRjBeekioLdLkvI) at the height of Britney and Christina she released this. Like whoa!
Edited to add that I was 10 at the time of it’s release.
Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden looool that song could make my 10 year old self SOB.
Also Spice Up Your Life by Spice Girls and
Crazy by Britney Spears.
Oh man, we had a mix tape my dad made that I fondly remember as the beach tape. It had “Africa” by Toto, “Sailing” and several songs . Africa was my jam, but it was the Chicago songs that I loved, Saturday in the Park, 25 or 6 to 4, etc.
Bryan Adams: Everything I do.
It was all over the radio when I was 6 years old, I didn't understand a word of English, but this song gave me the chills and I remember telling my mom this is my favourite song ever and learning the chorus... I still think it's a good song.
I think it was Steve Winwood “Higher Love” or “Back In The High Life Again”. But possibly Paul Simon’s “Call Me Al”. These all came out around the same time (‘86).
I listened to the Grease songs over and over when I was like 5, but didn’t see the movie til I was a little older. “Summer Nights” was my favorite song that I’d listen to on repeat. Used to make up stories in my head about it.
Probably Boulevard of Broken Dreams lol. It called out to my angsty teenage soul. Though I do think that quickly changed to Holiday after listening to the full album

Gangsta’s Paradise, 7th grade
also Amish Paradise
Heard the Weird Al parody before I’d ever heard the original.
The chorus really hits you. 💯
*Your Woman* by White Town stands out as a very distinct memory of one of those first songs that grabbed me as a kid and made me want to start exploring music. That is still such a good song!
Omg I think it was that one for me. And thanks for the reminder of hmv! I went there every two weeks to blow my paycheck from pharmaplus 😂
I listened to that one obsessively
Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins. I loved the music video and had my mom buy me the CD from the store. I listened to it on repeat, which my sister hated.
Smashing pumpkins anything hit me hard.
I remember hearing "1979" on the radio late at night as a kid and thinking *holy shit*

My first ever concert was Smashing Pumpkins at like 13. It was amazing and I remember Billy is one tall mofo
“Burning Down the House” by Talking Heads
The Stop Making Sense version is so special to me

Once in a Lifetime for me.
"Un-Break My Heart" by Toni Braxton

The weird hip girl at my high school made **Electric Feel by MGMT** the walk out music for our volleyball team and it completely changed my taste in music for the rest of my life
No this song is still my top 3 all time favorites. It just creates a whole vibe
I listened to so much early MGMT when I left home on my own for the first time. I went to Hong Kong for two weeks with no real plans and this album was playing nonstop. You must be the youngest millennial.
Yeah, I was trying to work it out in my head. Oldest possible would be '97, Aerials was released 2002. My brother is '98 and I am '87 - he LOVED my music when he was younger. He would sing with me as I played "it's been awhile" by Staind on my guitar.

Gen Z looks up to us I guess.
Now that's a very cool dad, right there
Bittersweet Symphony
That song still gives me goosebumps. God.. and with the feeling of overwhelming nostalgia it brings now makes it even more powerful.
Same. We had a small local skiing hill. I remember it blaring over the loudspeakers along with Beautiful Day - U2, and stupid girls - pink like it was just yesterday. Every time I hear it I’m instantly transported back to riding the lift on that sunny day. Music is amazing..
I Saw the Sign. Ace of Base
That was one of my first cassette tapes I ever owned, think it was that and Hootie’s Cracked Rearview.
Same here! Ace of Base first cassette.
This and blues traveler! The one with hook.
The sign will always be in my top 5
A wonderful song. I will never forget Stephanie Tanner performing this or when Ren Stevens did Dancing Queen.
For me it was “Don’t turn around” off the same album. I literally had it stuck in my head for like 20 years.
That album still slaps. I play it while I'm working and have my own little dance party.
Tracy chapman - fast car. Still gives me chills.
Eiffel 65- I'm blue. They used all the time in the roller park as a kid.
Loved it when that song came on during gym class
That song is such a cultural icon.
“Hi kids. Do you like violence?”
Wanna see me stick nine inch nails through each one of my eyelids?
Uh huh
Wanna copy me and do exactly like I did?
My intro to Eminem was actually "Forgot About Dre"
I literally was just listening/attempting to sing along to this 🤣
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. I was like 11 or 12 but it completely altered my music tastes. I only listened to my parents classic rock type of stuff and country until then. Now I listen to anything and everything. My Spotify algorithm struggles to figure out what I want.

This has been my favorite song since it came out and I was in 5th grade.
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac. I still think it's one of the best songs ever!
Weezer - Buddy Holly
Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears SLAPPED when I was like 11 or whatever
I hated it when I was an edgy teenager. Doofus grown up me loves it. Toxic is the best though.
okay I was convinced that “Lucky” was written about me personally (a regular preteen girl at the time , definitely not a famous pop star)
It was Stronger for me!
>"New Slang" by The Shins YESSSSS. It's been almost 20 years since I first heard that song and it STILL gives me chills because of how good it is. The whole Garden State album is pretty great. Let Go by Frou Frou. Might have caught her version of Holding Out for a Hero on Shrek 2.
Fun fact, Zach Braff sent a CD with all the songs he wanted alongside his script when he was trying to get Garden State made, so the songs are very much an intentional part of the DNA of the film.
I just watched this movie again recently and the song that really stuck out to me was Fair by Remy Zero. It’s such a great song.
Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead has the same vibe for me
I was obsessed with their song “Australia” in this way. Just couldn’t get enough.
Heart-shaped box by Nirvana
Mine is All Apologies!
On a Plain and Drain You by Nirvana was my big kick-the-the-jaw for getting into Nirvana. All great songs though. Incesticide remains my favorite album though

It took me until I was 30 to truly and deeply connect with that song and regard it as one of the best ever.
A legitimate candidate for the title, to be fair
![gif](giphy|PoGjMSWqt4RHHunrmy|downsized) Wannabe.
Regulate by Warren G and Nate Dogg. Every time that song was on the radio my friends and I would immediately stop what we were doing to listen to it.
Probably Radiohead - Paranoid Android
I remember where I was when I first saw the premier of the video on Much Music. This wasn't the first song in my life to blow my mind, but it absolutely blew my mind the most. It's like my musical brain was suddenly online.
Every Time We Touch - Cascada That one was mine and was my intro to more electric music 💯
That song still slaps. I'm obligated to go absolutely mental when I hear it in public
Ironic - Alanis Morissette
Shouldn’t have to scroll so far to find such an awesome answer. My friends and I played the Jagged Little Pill album constantly in junior high. It’s just so good.

No need to be embarrassed. Great song!

But what about To the Moon and Back? OMG, that song is a fucking masterpiece to this day. I love the spaceship sounds in the beginning and the LYRICS!!
Headstrong by Trapt. That was the song that got me into rock and acted as an eventual gateway into metal.

“Long day” by Matchbox 20. My first CD. Still listen to it now.
I think it was commercial but At Last by Etta James. I knew that was masterful the first time I heard it.
Bittersweet symphony. You couldn’t tell 10 year old me that wasn’t the best song ever written.
Gangster's Paradise by Coolio. Which is kinda funny considering I was an 8 y/o white girl. I do not think I was the target audience.
Green Day - Basket Case Or maybe it was something by Janet Jackson on her Rhythm Nation album lol
Cherry Pie by Warrant. But it may have been more the video that made me love it. It was MANY years before I understood what it was about.

Come As You Are by Nirvana

I was probably 5-8 years old and heard we built this city on rock and roll going down Ann st in Montgomery Alabama. Early 80s ish
“Crawling” by Linkin Park was my gateway drug into metal lol.
Final Countdown by Europe

The first song I remember liking was Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. 😅

Perfect by simple plan when I was an angsty teen
Meant to live by Switchfoot in early 2000s
