to make it less visible you could do what OP did with the chain and then use white stained glass and put one under it and for on each side, or something like this
A chain, then two blocks down a glass pane, then get the mob onto the glass pane, name it dinnerbine, and it will stay there, no need for blocks around. It doesn’t have anywhere to pathfinder to, so it stays put
I swear, whenever me and my brother used to play we used to build big cities and villages but I hated the noise that the villagers made but my brother wanted them because it didn’t make sense to have an empty village so everytime he wasn’t playing, I would kill at least ten of these vermin before logging off. You name the villager Dinnerbone and place barrier blocks around him, so you have to use creative
You get barrier blocks by typing /give (your username) barrier. This also works with command blocks (with cheats on)

On top of this I would touture them with a stick and changeing in to a sword but then switch back into a stick and hiting them with the stick.
Executeion: I will take them out of the village and kill them with my op netherite sword with a crittcal hit that would kill them instanly.
I probably see this on the villager rights sub later. I was supporting villager rights, but the kids in that sub are annoying, every post is “how could they do this” like dude I want some good fake war between villager killers and villager rights activists

Is there a good way to replicate this in survival without barrier blocks?
Trying a glass cage around them, like 2 blocks out each direction may allow a similar effect. Basically put them in a display case

A lead or a glass pane might work, maybe iron bars / chains would also work, but they aren’t as transparent as a glass pane

You can put a villager upside down but not incage them in invisible bartier blocks
Tango put that villager on top of a glass pane. It's almost invisible in that dark room.
