If you use pantograph or some similar mechanism inside piston you might be able to get a full extension. Or your can just redesign the piston shaft to adjust a longer horn of servo motor to effectively do the same.
thank you, that's a really good suggestion I hadn't thought about! The main issue though, is that it needs a nested shaft to extend fully. My thoughts to fix it is by using a pneumatic solenoid and moving it completely inside the shaft of the piston then activating to move the remaining distance :)

So a dirt block could be transparent on the top, but when a grass layer is placed above, it would be able to detect the change. The reverse for a path block. It can work like a player detection like when you place string in front of it, but acts a bit finicky when putting the piston in front, then powering it into a loop. I might make a light sensing one though

A scissor mechanism would work well with the servo, but it would affect the aesthetics.
