She absolutely should do Monarch season 2. This is her opportunity to elevate the material. She wasn’t bad in Monarch - the writing was less than stellar which wasn’t her fault, but it was still an entertaining and successful show. Plus - she still needs to work and get her name out there. She will have Pachinko season 2 as well where she will hopefully be given a bigger role especially after Shogun’s success. She’s just starting to make waves - if she does get that Emmy nod - which she should and honestly should probably win - that will be huge and bring about a ton of projects she can choose from. I think she will get picked up by Marvel or DC for either a Katanna or Psylock type character.

You've got a point, but if the writing is still the same for her character that could potentially be a step back. Haven't watched Pachinko yet. Tbh, I don't know if I want her in any Marvel or DC superhero roles as I feel like there's an audience-fatigue in that genre right now. I wanna see her in more serious roles because I feel like that's where she shines. Say A24 horror or something. That would be awesome.

I agree on the super hero stuff - it’s so saturated and has been for like 10 years. But could totally see her nabbing one of the Japanese characters and actually doing it justice. Pachinko is a commitment because of the language and back and forth time frame, but worth it. Her character isn’t in the original source material so they can do a lot with Naomi. She was in Giri/Haji also - not a big role, but she was great. It’s on Netflix now. I was surprised it didn’t get a second season because it was really good. Also has Takehiro Hiro in it. I didn’t even realize she was in it because she was relatively unknown when she did that show. She talked about it in a podcast and that’s the only reason I knew it was her. I’m good with anything A24 puts out right now. I hope she has the right people behind her looking for the right projects.

Probably going to check out Pachinko. Not sure with Giri/Haji. But anyway, I really hope she gets more opportunities.

After watching her in Shogun and seeing she absolutely is an excellent actress and can elevate material with her own nuances, I went back to watch monarch and it kinda made a worse case for the acting on it. Is the writing terrible in Monarch? For sure. But does she still do a really terrible job dealing with it? Also true. The other actors also received terrible character writing but it’s now glaringly obvious that Anna Sawai just did not attempt to try and give anything to the character and makes it even more unbearable beyond the bad writing. Now that we’ve seen what she can do, it’s bizarre to watch the grating wooden whiny monarch character with zero nuance.

Charmaineders

This is why I'm not sure if I can watch her in this show. Lol.

Impossible_Bee_1257

I would think she would not want to butn bridges so early in her career.

Charmaineders

Good point.

BlueBeetleBabe1

I’m confused, I love Monarch

TyrionBean

I haven't even seen the last episode of Monarch yet. I just can't seem to muster up the effort.

Charmaineders

I don't enjoy monsterverse stuff but I've watched the first episode of this show. Not sure if I'm going to continue. I'm honestly just here for Anna. Lol.

jlynn121

Kurt Russell and his son are quite fun in the show. I stayed for Mari Yamamoto. She’s spectacular.

You're not missing anything

Maldovar

Why are you hating on Monarch's writing and acting in the Monarch sub?

Charmaineders

Aren't we allowed to criticize and discuss stuff like this? Just curious.

Maldovar

You're not making any criticisms you're stating the direction and writing are bad like theyre accepted facts
