As of 7:42 this evening, they’re checking on the feasibility of getting busses to transport people who are stuck, provided it safe for them to walk to a location accessible for the busses.
My spring break is this week, I was planning on driving up from LA for a day trip to see Big Sur. Should I cancel or maybe replan and do some other fun stuff in Monterey?
big sur is still closed fromso you could see part of the south coast (ragged point, etc). otherwise, you’d have to go up and around but there are currently only convoys for residents & essential workers. big sur state parks has more info on all the closures. [https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=570](https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=570)
That’s exactly right. They can’t tell from their POV but the support under road is completely washed out underneath. And roads themselves are just a couple inches thin…
I know the spot you are talking about. It’s past hurricane point half way to little sur….The dip is increasing for sure…. This beautiful coast keeps us on our toes!
This has resulted in a new Highway 1 closure at Palo Colorado Rd (2 miles north of Bixby Bridge) & **makes over 40 miles of Big Sur inaccessible**
+ **[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/BigSur/comments/1brxb52/big_surs_highway_1_closed_north_of_bixby_bridge/)** is the r/BigSur post discussing this specific closure, with more info & photos (for instance, much more of the road, & the Great Depression-era CCC-built stone guard rail, have now collapsed);
+ **[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/BigSur/comments/10c5o5l/big_surs_highway_1_closed/)** is the main road closure post for r/BigSur, with regular updates on conditions, driving directions, etc
The local hotels are opening up doors to facilities for anyone stranded. Fernwood, Pfeiffer State Park and others are assisting with I think 500+ stranded.

We were just in Big Sur for a day hike. When we found our selves stuck on the South side of the slide in Big Sur over Night. Many people had to sleep in there cars. At around 10:15 in the morning Sunday, Cal Fire told us there was a 99.9% chance we would have to leave our cars behind for an indefinite amount of time and walk out. Then at noon they allowed us to pass thru in a monitored convoy. Although it was a very costly 24 hours paying for an unplanned hotel stay, food and necessities in a very expensive hotel. I am so exhausted and greatful to be on the opposite side of the slide heading home to The North Bay, with my car and my family safe and sound. Thanks to Big Sur Lodge and Red Cross for taking us in and providing shelter and accommodations. And to all those people that are suffering in the world from so much more my heart goes out to them... I am thankful and blessed.
Bro I would have been scared as hell to take a pic of that but big sur always has some road collapse at some point during the rainy season ... So makes sense
Aw man, sorry if this is a dumb question not too familiar with big sur, but my partner is around Nepenthe, does that mean it’s possible for them to be trapped there that long? Hoping it gets fixed soon
I worked at the River Inn the last time the road washed out and we definitely had tourists stuck there, since there was also a huge mudslide to the south. There used to be a way out through Fort Hunter Liggett, to King City, but if your husband doesn't have 4-wheel drive, I wouldn't recommended it (if it's even still an option. A lot has changed down there since I lived and worked in the area).

Bir Sur Kate is a great resource
Not a dumb question. They probably won't be able to drive out for a while, but last time there was pedestrian crossing at 7 am & 4 pm. I expect they'll try to offer the same this time, so hopefully you will be able to go pick your partner up on the north side of the closure or walk across to hang with them inside the closure
damn, had no idea bc i just got back from backpacking big sur! was at the trailhead just before the slide on the south side, crazy to see the massive damage :o wild
Oh, man, that's scary!
Nerves of steel this one has!
I thought it was a reflection when I first saw this picture! Wild the stone is holding up
Stone wall was gone about an hour later. Can’t imagine what it looks like now.
It’s a Roman stone wall. 😂
Almost - those were built during the Depression.
Me too! I can't imagine!!!!

Christ. The sun just set like an hour ago. I think I would rather just drive the other way, even if it took 3 hours.
The road is closed south as well
Shit...is that the storm damage from last year still? I didn't even think of that.
Yup! Been closed over a year now.
If only there were a bunch of rich dudes with helicopters that lived within 50 miles of there. Guessing none of them are interested in helping.
My spring break is this week, I was planning on driving up from LA for a day trip to see Big Sur. Should I cancel or maybe replan and do some other fun stuff in Monterey?
You can go around on other routes to Monterey and see what you can up until the road closures. Don’t plan on driving down 1 though.

All this talk but no kudos to the bricklayer that made that kickass gravity resisting wall.
Warp Fuckery
It fell .
There isn’t anything under both lanes at this spot, whoever took this pic is really lucky!
That’s exactly right. They can’t tell from their POV but the support under road is completely washed out underneath. And roads themselves are just a couple inches thin…
They’re still running convoys unless it rains. People can get out, 8 and 4 every day. You can only get back in if you’re a local.
Went down there 2 weeks ago and there was a big crack in the road. A few hours later on the way back we saw them patching it up. Scary!
I know the spot you are talking about. It’s past hurricane point half way to little sur….The dip is increasing for sure…. This beautiful coast keeps us on our toes!
That is more south correct than this point? It's after hurricane point?

Most sound Big Sur road
super scary!!!
So what’s happening to visitors trapped down there, especially day trippers that didn’t already have a place to stay? Are there shelters?
The local hotels are opening up doors to facilities for anyone stranded. Fernwood, Pfeiffer State Park and others are assisting with I think 500+ stranded.
Thanks for that info.
Sooo does that mean there are complimentary rooms at Alila Ventana? Might go get myself stranded there..
Hey, I work there, but no. They have suspended operations for at least a week, likely longer
Dude, get the fuck out of there!
How far down is this?
Between rocky creek bridge and bixby bridge about 13 miles south of crossroads
Holy cow!!! That’s not very far at all!

River Inn says they are open to customers on their side of the closure.
Damn I was hoping to hit Nepenthe for breakfast! That's scary I hope they can get folk out...
Back up plan… The Butter House or Breakfast Club 😁
Both are solid choices. 🤤 Add Old Monterey Cafe to that too...
Little Swiss is better 😬
Going into Carmel is always a bit of a hassle but I will add that to the list, always up for a good breakfast place! Coming from Marina. 😁
How do you even fix that?
They will have to refill the spot. I am not sure what material they will be using but yeah I am pretty sure they fill everything back in.
Ocean viewport for tourists!
Just in time for tourists to invade the Coast.
Of course, the WPA-built wall defies physics, since it fashioned by superior men from a superior age.
That part of the road was rebuilt in 2011.
Still holds up
Rebar
Saw a photo where it appeared the wall did eventually collapse. Did you see same?
Wow and there are people/homes/cars stranded in between that closure and the one at Lucia.
This darn road keeps getting a beating. Mother Nature has a plan
Big nope
Your just lagging, wait for the textures to finish loading amd you will re-sync with the matrix
still rebooting... check back in 2 weeks.

That road always has issues
Is it time to rethink coastal transport between Big Sur & Monterey? 😬
Wow I thought they fixed this
They fixed a similar spot just south of here in 2011 (it took 35 days to get one lane open last time)
Aw man, sorry if this is a dumb question not too familiar with big sur, but my partner is around Nepenthe, does that mean it’s possible for them to be trapped there that long? Hoping it gets fixed soon

The route through Fort Hunter Liggett has been closed since 2020 due to damage from the Dolan Fire
Nacimiento-Fergusson Road has been inaccessible from Big Sur valley since early February due to the Dolan and Regent’s slides.

I expect they'll try to offer the same this time, so hopefully you will be able to go pick your partner up on the north side of the closure or walk across to hang with them inside the closure
Thank you!
Crap.. building anything on the cliff is tough..
Eek 😬
Yep! That’s Big Sur for ya!!
What what what 🌊
This stretch of the highway falls into the ocean every few years. That most of the road through Big Sur stays intact is a minor miracle.
Is this the same road where the Big Sur marathon is run?
Yeah, this is (i think) a little bit past mile 14 for the full marathon
Yes, hopefully, it's not a repeat of 2011. I really think there will be progress made after this next storm. Crossing fingers.
So this is north of the original closure? I drove down to Nepenthe a few weeks ago from Monterey. Is this before that area?
This is about a 1/2 mile north of bixby and right south of rocky creek bridge.
damn, had no idea bc i just got back from backpacking big sur! was at the trailhead just before the slide on the south side, crazy to see the massive damage :o wild
That road is much uhhh thinner than I would expect
I'm running BSIM in a few weeks. On the one hand, I'm like "yay no hurricane point" but on the other hand then "boo no bixby bridge" :(
It’s almost a metaphor for California if you think about it it
Throw some sand on dare.
We raised gas taxes to fix this stuff should be fixed and improved in no time at all 🙄
