Honestly all of Tarkovsky is beyond good. I cannot convey how important his films are to the human condition.
Andrei Rublev (1966)
Solaris (1972)
Mirror (1975)
Stalker (1979)
Nostalgia (1983)
Sacrifice (1986)
This list might very well make him the most important filmmaker in all of history.
Here's a list of must-watch classics across various genres:
1. **"Casablanca" (1942)** - A timeless love story set against the backdrop of World War II, known for its memorable lines and iconic performances.
2. **"Citizen Kane" (1941)** - Often hailed as one of the greatest films ever made, it's a masterpiece in storytelling and cinematography.
3. **"Psycho" (1960)** - A landmark in the thriller genre directed by Alfred Hitchcock, known for its suspense and iconic scenes.
4. **"Gone with the Wind" (1939)** - A sweeping epic of love and war in the American South during the Civil War era.
5. **"The Godfather" (1972)** - A defining gangster film that offers a deep dive into the world of organized crime and family loyalty.
6. **"12 Angry Men" (1957)** - A compelling courtroom drama that explores the complexities of human nature and justice.
7. **"The Wizard of Oz" (1939)** - A beloved musical fantasy that's a cornerstone of American pop culture.
8. **"Vertigo" (1958)** - Another Hitchcock classic, known for its psychological depth and innovative camera work.
9. **"Some Like It Hot" (1959)** - A comedy featuring cross-dressing and gender roles, ahead of its time in humor and social commentary.
10. **"To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962)** - A powerful drama that addresses racism and injustice in the American South.
These films are iconic in the world of cinema and provide a broad spectrum of what makes a movie a "classic."
Here are some older movie recommendations. (This submission is less likely to get mod points because so few people will have seen them):
My Man Godfrey (1930s version. one of the all time great film comedies)
Sullivan's Travels
Lives of a Bengal Lancer (Don't know where you're from but it's shamelessly jingoistic, a product of it's time, the 1930s. Good adventure yarn though.)
Captain Blood (Adventure Pirate movie)
Prisoner of Zenda (1930s version, adventure yarn that has been made into film many times.)
The Green Pastures (a unique film from the 1930s. All black cast, Old Testament Bible stories as imagined by children in Sunday School, except the ending packs a wallop.)
She Done Him Wrong (Because it stars Mae West in her prime, a unique, iconic personality, responsible for such lines as "Come up and see me sometime.", "Peel me a grape". "It's not the men in your life, it's the life in your men.", "Goodness had nothing to do with it" in response to "Goodness what jewels".)
Angels With Dirty Faces (Got to have one James Cagney gangster flick from the 30s in the mix.)
Scarface (1932 version, a second gangster flick from the 30s, though the 1983 version with Al Pacino, which I haven't seen, is better known.)
The Passion of Joan of Arc. It’s definitely not for everyone, but all the different techniques they used with editing and different shot types were amazing for when it was made.
* Casablanca (1942) - A timeless romantic drama set during World War II, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
* Gone with the Wind (1939) - An epic historical romance set in the American South during the Civil War, based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell.
* Citizen Kane (1941) - Directed by and starring Orson Welles, this film is often considered one of the greatest movies ever made, known for its innovative cinematography and storytelling techniques.
* The Godfather (1972) - Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this crime saga follows the Corleone crime family and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema.
* Psycho (1960) - Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this psychological thriller is famous for its suspenseful storyline and iconic shower scene.
My fav's: His Girl Friday, Monkey Business, Bringing Up Baby, The More the Merrier, Love Affair (1939), and Harvey (plus, the already mentioned My Man Godfrey, the William Powell version)
Others have made some great recommendations.
For comedy I would recommend a Marx Brothers movie. Day at the Races, Night at the Opera or Duck Soup.
For suspense I would recommend an Alfred Hitchcock film like Vertigo, psycho or North by Northwest.
For a musical I would recommend Top Hat, An American in Paris, Oklahoma
The Man who Would be King, Cool Hand Luke, The Magnificent Seven, Of Mice and Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Conan the Barbarian.
Classic implies more the golden age of Hollywood predating most of us here.
