My top 10 are:
1) A Clockwork Orange (1971)
2) Brazil (1985)
3) Logan (2017)
4) Blade Runner (1982)
5) Sleeper (1973)
6) Stalker (1979)
7) The Warriors (1979)
8) Total Recall (1990)
9) Dark City (1998)
10) Metropolis (1927)
I watched Soylent Green last year. The thing that really stuck with me was how women's sexuality was just a utility for men in that movie. They were expected to hand sex over, but without agency. This seemed to be the way sex was being portrayed in the 1970s though -- like in Saturday Night Fever. I could see how the future might look like that from the 70s perspective.
Gattaca (1997): dystopian future centering on messing with genetics and what it means for naturally born people.
The Lobster (2015): dating in a dystopian future, this film is dark but very funny somehow.
12 Monkeys (1995): from the same director as Brazil but this movie's more accessible, I would give Gilliam another shot.
Total Recall (1990): fun movie about the colonization of Mars, less intellectually stimulating than my other suggestions but a good time.
Yes! This is the best, most eclectic list!
Gattaca is low key one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s not a lot of anything (special effects, moralistic futurism, over the top acting) it’s just good.
It’s shot at the Marin Civic Center which is one of Frank Lloyd Wrights few public structures. I’ve been there a billion times. If ya google earth it you can guesstimate the rockets launch hypothetically! from roughly where San Quentin prison is!! Roughly and imaginatively
Brazil is my favorite movie of all time, though I think it’s quite different from the rest of my reccs (other than Golem, which is weirdly similar in ways difficult to pinpoint). They tend to be campier than your faves, tho.
1. Robocop
2. The Running Man
3. Golem
4. Soylent Green
5. Omega Man
6. Zardoz
7. Logan’s Run
8. A Clockwork Orange
9. Weirdly I love the Maze Runner movies, I was surprised by how spooky the second one is (and it has Giancarlo Esposito in it!). It actually gave me nightmares, lol.
10. Would Melancholia count? It feels dystopian to me, in that the world is about to end.
11. Escape from New York
12. Edge of Tomorrow
13. District 9
Chasing the dragon, eh? Just saw Civil War in theaters last week. It was SO GOOD. If you haven’t you should check out other Alex Garland projects Devs and Annihilation.
For a movie I’m going to suggest How I Live Now. It has some of the ambiguity about what’s going on you might be looking for. If you find anything else you really like come back and let me know 😅
Lots of people have already mentioned the classics like Blade runner, but how about Upgrade (2018) for something contemporary.
Also - The Island (2005). A cross between Bladerunner and The Rock.
Sorry kinda lmao here. I didn't know when Equilibrium came out and based on these comments I was guessing somewhere between '89-93, but 2002?
I must be old.
1. Dune (2021)
2. V for Vendetta (2005)
3. 12 Monkeys (1995)
4. Children of Men (2006)
5. Akira - Animation (1988)
6. Stalker (1979)
7. Mad max fury roads (2015)
8. The book of eli (2010)
9. The Matrix saga
10. The Truman show (1998)
Gonna throw 'Wake in Fright' in there. It is not traditionally dystopian but it is more like the main character is thrust into this absolutely absurd and dangerous hell world.

Oh gosh I don't.
They added 8 episodes of filler murder mystery that didn't even exist in the book. It wasn't bad but if they just followed the book it would have been better and made more sense

A Scanner Darkly is one of my favorites. Based off a book by Philip K. Dick (who also wrote Blade Runner and Minority Report). It’s a much smaller scale than a lot of other dystopian films, but I love the characters and overall premise.
Just re watched Fury Road the other day and it's up there with children of men and 28 days later levels of good forsure. Also a not too popular but great movie is book of eli!
This is the most boring movie I've ever seen. Try to keep your eyes open while watching. Boring plot, bad actors, boring conversation. I'll never watch a British movie again.
If your looking for something most people won't include on their list, then check out The Postman 1997. I enjoy the movie a lot, it has some corny parts, but I think its a while done movie with a good cast.

The new Bladerunner kicks ass too.
I'm so happy Logan is on a list.
The Warriors was a documentary
I didn't even know I needed this list until i saw this list.
Anything that isn’t from 50+ years ago?
Only one was 50+ years ago on the whole list 🤣
You know what I meant
Clearly not. They're all solid choices and no one said how old or new the suggestions needed to be so 🤷🏼♀️
Ok? I asked because I don’t enjoy watching movies so old it looks like you’re watching a puppet show..
But you aren't OP. Make your own post with clarification on the years or timelines you'd like to see movies from.
So I can’t ask for suggestions? That’s the whole point.
Fr. Today's dystopia is far beyond the reach of these ancient films.
Soylent Green (1973) Equilibrium (2002) The Time Machine (1960) I Am Legend (2007)
Soylent Green is SO good. Everything is still 100% relatable, and that's pretty sad to me.
I watched Soylent Green last year. The thing that really stuck with me was how women's sexuality was just a utility for men in that movie. They were expected to hand sex over, but without agency. It was the first movie I purchased to watch with my wife in her new house many moons ago. She loved it!
It’s shot at the Marin Civic Center which is one of Frank Lloyd Wrights few public structures. I’ve been there a billion times. If ya google earth it you can guesstimate the rockets launch hypothetically! from roughly where San Quentin prison is!! Roughly and imaginatively
If OP didn't like Brazil, there's no way they're gonna like The Lobster lol The other three you listed are top tier!
Thanks for the tip
I would recommend the 12 monkeys tv show instead, i liked it much better.
Dark City Gattaca City of the Lost Children Total Recall Snowpiercer Minority Report
I love City of the Lost Children. Great list :)
Not a movie but the last man on earth is the best series I've ever seen dystopian wise it's a comedy but also very clever
Not really looking for a comedy right now but it’s on my radar. I’ll save that for a day I’m looking for a laugh. Thanks for the suggestion
There's also a movie called Last Man (or Last Man On Earth) with Jeri Ryan (7 of 9 from Star Trek) it's also a comedy. Low budget
Giving the series “Silo” a shoutout. It got me hooked after a couple episodes. Can’t wait for season 2.
Not bad but the book is MUCH better
I thought the series did a good job of portraying the book. But of course the book was better.
The book was incredible. I did the audio book in a week. Reading Half Way Home now. Which is also really good
“Reading” lol
I did the audio book for Wool because I couldn’t get enough. Half Way Home reading the physical book, Jake.
I love audiobooks ❤️
This is kind of a joke answer, but you should watch it anyway: Blast from the Past
Starring Brendan Fraser in his heyday! And Alicia Silverstone. And Christopher Walken. Good movie!
I completely forgot about this movie. Upvote for this one it was a great movie!
The road
Book>Movie. Still a good movie. But Jesus that book is brutal.
It's bleak.
One of the best movie adaptations though, still a devastating movie
[удалено]
It’s really good and has a terrific ending!
The Road with Viggo Mortensen
Also excellent book. Different ending iirc
12 Monkeys
“Mon….key!!”

Equilibrium- Christian Bale. basically 1984 with interesting gun fights and swords
Annihilation The rover Idiocracy Akira Time of the wolf Crimes of the future Boy and his dog Possessor District 9
THX-1138. One of the OG’s
The new blade runner and dune Denis Villeneuve 🤌
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Equilibrium What Happened to Monday? Not so much post-apocalyptic dystopias, just futures gone wrong.
Dystopia =/= post apocalyptic
I know that, which is why I gave the examples I did. Tell other people, though a post apocalyptic society can also be dystopian.
Fair enough. I was going off OPs title, not their liked movies which are more post apocalyptic than just dystopian
I guess future gone wrong is kind of what I’m looking for. What happened to Monday kind of sounds like what I’m looking for.
I really enjoyed What Happened To Monday?, great film! Equilibrium is a classic, ofc.
Not a movie but The Last of Us is amazing. Also a series worth watching: Silo
Last of Us is killer!
Not a movie but the Station Eleven mini-series on Max is well worth the watch. Excellent cast. Great from beginning to end.
Chasing the dragon, eh? Just saw Civil War in theaters last week. It was SO GOOD. If you haven’t you should check out other Alex Garland projects Devs and Annihilation. Isn’t chasing the dragon hell?
Oh yes lol. There’s a few versions in the movie hunt world lol
Chasing the dragon is a euphemism for doing heroin
And chasing literal dragons
I Robot Red Dawn Divergent Planet of the Apes

Does Contagion count as dystopian?
Maybe pre-2020. Now it's laughable.
12 Monkeys!
Birdbox
The fallout series was great. Mad Max Waterworld Eraserhead
The road Warrior(mad max 2)logans run, silent running, children of men
Idiocracy. It’s really more of a documentary, though.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes works really well as a dystopian movie
The divide
The Platform (2019)\ Farenheit 451 (1966)\ Children of Men (2006)

I actually liked Terminator Salvation. There's a "flavor" or grittiness to it. Is it the most perfectly tied up story? No.
Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999)
Hell Comes to Frogtown Escape From New York Never Let Me Go
Try “equilibrium” if you haven’t seen it.
Children of Men
Escape from New York
Dune, Mad Max, Blade Runner
Madmax
A Boy and His Dog 1975
The original short story is fun!
Omega Man Silent Running Elysium
A Quiet Place
Gattaca
I highly recommend the 1984 version of "1984" with John Hurt. The movie is reasonably faithful to the book and it is an outstanding watch.
Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)
City of God Elysium, if you're in the mood for sci-fi distopia.
City of God is based on a true story. Unless there's another one I'm unaware of.
That's the one. I'd say it's a real life dystopia
Equilibrium! Early signs of Christian Bale being a great actor
Gave h you seen Bale in “Empire of the Sun “? Excellent. He was even younger!
No but adding to my list. Thank you!
Sorry kinda lmao here. I didn't know when Equilibrium came out and based on these comments I was guessing somewhere between '89-93, but 2002? I must be old.

Finally, someone said it ,"V for vendetta ".
V for vendetta. What happened to Monday. Book of Eli.
I see a lot of lists with Dark City and Equilibrium. Why is The Matrix getting left off? I know the 3 movies after the original are all meh.. but?
I'd say Matrix is post apocalyptic not dystopian
Ah. An interesting distinction that I had not previously considered.
Yeah otherwise og matrix crushes all the others.
Gonna throw 'Wake in Fright' in there. It is not traditionally dystopian but it is more like the main character is thrust into this absolutely absurd and dangerous hell world.
This movie gave me a hangover
Book of Eli
The Road

Oh gosh I don't. They added 8 episodes of filler murder mystery that didn't even exist in the book. It wasn't bad but if they just followed the book it would have been better and made more sense
sorry for the non suggestion but has there ever been a brave new world movie? I'd die for that.
Peacock released a series in 2020. It only had one season though. I thought it was pretty good.
