This. I’m admittedly old but work alone in a lab near a university and have the college radio station on all day long which is great but as it’s all volunteer Freeform radio each show is unique and some stuff might be a little out there for someone who has only been exposed to mainstream music. I was working one day and my coworker brought a new employee (F22) by on a tour & as they came in he explained that “He listens to the radio and there’s sometimes some weird stuff on there”. Her response was to laugh and say “You listen to the radio?!”
91.7 used to be my jam back in the mid 90s, late night beat generation on saturday nights was the cats ass..
steven kaye was kind of a knowitall prick tho imo.
“Does nobody young listen to the radio or is rock just not popular anymore?”
I’d say both are true. Young people are on Spotify for most things and people who are into smaller bands are on things like Bandcamp. I listen to a lot of college radio and would argue that radio is still alive if you know where to look, but most of the college age DJ’s tend to play a lot of indie pop of various flavors these days. The ones who are into rock now seem to be rediscovering older music for the most part with an emphasis on established styles like garage/psych, industrial, post punk & “alternative” bands from the 90’s, often inspired by their parents tastes I think.
I’d argue people in their twenties are listening to rock now more than they did when I was growing up. I was born into a family of rock parents so I was taken to concerts starting at age seven in 2005.
I couldn’t PAY my friends to listen to rock music with me for the longest time. I gave up. Since they’ve graduated college they’ve come around because they’re now old enough to develop opinions for themselves and can understand that all genres can be good/give you that endorphin release rush.
I think rock is making a comeback for my generation… I’m not a GVF fan but they sure as hell helped kickstart that, at least around me as I’m from Michigan.
I'm also not a fan of GVF but I do love the revival of rock music that is happening. If you enjoy the 70s psych and folk rock vibes check of the Canadian band Blood Ceremony. They're fantastic. But beware they utilize a flute on occasion.
Disagree! Give WFUV 90.7 a listen (on weekdays). It’s out of Fordham University. As a bona fide old person, I’d say it is definitely not all for the yoots (and it’s commercial-free).
Yeah.
I'm 47, and started listening to Vaporwave in my late 30s. I know the music meme machine has moved on since then, but I still like vaporwave unironically.
But the real popular stuff is not on the radio. It's happening on the internet, on youtube and soundcloud. I avoid Tiktok, but it's probably there most of all right now.
Grand rapids has shit for radio.
We have a "rock" station and a "classic rock" station.
They all play the same generic dad rock.
How many times a day do I need to hear back in black or def Leppard?
I’m a big fan of independent local radio. A quick Google shows you have 88.1 WYCE. With those you typically get no commercials and local DJ’s playing whatever they like which can be hit/miss but better than hearing the same crap over and over on commercial radio. Also, most of them are online now so you can listen to stations all over the country/world. I’m listening to Grand Rapids right now. Maybe not my favorite at the moment but looking at past shows there might be some good stuff.
im going to venture a guess that none who have responded yet are actually high school to early twenties.
heres a list
alvvays, big thief, phoebe bridgers/boygenius, jay som, beabadoobee, japanese breakfast, soccer mommy, black country new road (if you can call them rock), alex g, willow, the beths, pinegrove, PUP, jeff rosenstock, oso oso, her's, feeble little horse, glass beach, origami angel
Other old guy here. Either I am very out of touch or having a stroke while reading these band names. either is equally possible. Ithought I would recognize at least one. Guess I have some listening to do tonight either way.
Boygenius was nominated for a ton of Grammys last year, so they are by no means a fringe band. The rest are a little less known, but this 47-year old dude knows about half of them.
Same with pinegrove. Saw them at a festival and all the teens were obsessed and they were pretty good. Another one I saw who were really good was Melt. Lead singer put on a show.
These are similar in vibe to the music I listened to in college in the 00s but I would have called it "indie" before I called it "rock" with typically a softer or poppier sound or leaning more towards folk, and if you listened to this type of music you could be labeled a hipster (which I'm told is now called alt and I have no idea if it has the negative connotation hipster did). "Rock" would have been like Foo Fighters, RHCP, that type of vibe. It seems like maybe in the younger generation because of streaming/TikTok popularizing bands, the line between indie rock and regular rock does not exist as much? I would classify some newer bands like Maneskin and Greta Von Fleet as more purely rock but I don't know if younger people listen to them, the sound is a bit dated. Are there equivalent bands to Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Papa Roach, etc.? What are your average gamer or jock teen boys listening to, it can't be boygenius right?
Thank you. I agree this list is good music but it’s soft as hell. It’s mostly indie pop. Check out Turnstile
Edit: obligatory King Gizzard plug, if you want new rock and haven’t looked them up, they may be the most exciting band around right now.
And then Speed. They seem to be at exactly the same place in their career that Turnstile were when *Nonstop Feeling* dropped. Reckon they’re going to be massive.
Boygenius is definitely the biggest one among people I know, I’m 15. Julien baker who is the guitarist has phenomenal solo stuff that I think is better than their stuff as a band (no discredit to their work as a band, just julien’s solo stuff is on another level)
I’m 30 and I listen to the majority of these bands (BCNR is probably my favorite). Do the youths not have their own thing they’re hiding from us golden oldies?
Also, this feels like there’s holes in this tapestry. What’s the dumbass bro rock of today? Does hip hop and electronic fully engulf the market of shit dumbasses listen to while they’re hopped up on energy drinks and screaming slurs into the mic while playing online multiplayer games? Because that was Imagine Dragons and Chainsmokers about 10 years ago. What is it today?
My girlfriend and I are in our mid-to-late thirties and we actively listen to at least ten of those artists regularly. Does that means we’re still “with it”?
The UMass radio station has an amazing lineup of student DJs that play whatever music they like or are in the mood to play. Wallows is definitely a popular one. Also been playing a lot of Crumb and Guerilla Toss.
I put it on in my work truck driving around and I feel like a millennial who is still hip lmao
I only know Turnstile because there was a story about someone [pooping in one of their mosh pits and the poop getting all over everyone](https://consequence.net/2021/09/turnstile-poop-moshpit/amp/)
My niecfews listen to them. Not bad. We go one for one on the Spotify app and I try to get as close to the song they played with something old.
I got my nephew into The Clash.
Hm, I saw Mother Mother a couple weeks ago and we are... older than you :) It was a pretty young crowd, although it seemed a majority of them were there to see Cavetown.
They were also the direct inspiration for a little show you might've heard of called Spongebob Squarepants. As long as Spongebob memes are here, so is Ween.
I'm familiar. I'm from Eastern PA, and as I said, they formed when I was in high school. Been a fan for a long time. I was just kinda surprised that someone making a thread asking about new rock bands would be directed to Ween.
They are just part of the Aussie pub Rock revival that's been going since eddy current suppression ring and Violent Soho got big.
Got your Amyl and the Sniffers on the punk end of things with acts like Ball Park Music and Spacey Jane going the more alt rock route.
Even the hip hop project Genesis Owusu has shock rock artist Kirin J Callihan co writing and playing guitars live
Ehh, the heady metal dudes have been waving the Gizz flag for over a decade. I wouldn't call anything they do pub rock though.
I do agree that modern Aussie punk is having a day. Skeggs, Dune Rats, Waax, etc. Amyl is great, Violent Soho as well.
I first dipped into them with Spotify 'this is king gizzard' I thought it kept jumping to different bands, one song was a grimey sludge metal type song, the next was something that would feature on a cafe del Mar soundtrack.
ITT: a bunch of out of touch elder millennials trying to pass off bands that have been around for 20 years as “new music” that young people listen to lmao
Some actual answers (from an only mostly out of touch millennial):
Good Kid, Wallows, Internet Girl, Cavetown, Lovejoy (they got “canceled” cuz their singer is kind of a POS but the music is good), re6ce, grandson, SYML, Måneskin, Powfu, The Rare Occasions, EKKSTACY, I Prevail, Pale Waves, blackbear, Games We Play, Surf Curse, Stand Atlantic
AFAIK all of these bands & artists began/started putting music out in the last 10 years or less
Geez, grandson is the only one I know and love, but seems kind-of older now. Do "da youts" still listen to him?
Planning to check out a bunch more from this thread.
I can’t stop singing the praises of the Royel Otis live cover of the song “Murder on the Dance Floor.” It’s terrific. So good the radio stations are playing the live recording.
So good the live version is on Spotify, Apple Music, etc
Here’s the YouTube link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sQyL3mUVDWA
Amyl and the Sniffers and Mannequin Pussy has been on rotation for me.
I’m from Seattle and have KEXP fixed on my radio dial. They also have a streaming app, and do a lot of great live in studio performances and podcasts of all types of music. They have genre specific shows on a regular schedule as well. They have a live Punk and Metal show every Saturday night.
The Home Team, AVOID, Honey Revenge, Bad Omens, Dayseeker, STARSET, From Ashes To New, Falling In Reverse, Silent Planet, Bring Me The Horizon (I know they're older but they've changed genres and really are the biggest band in the scene ATM) These are all bands that I listen to that have gotten popular in the last 10 years or started gaining momentum. They span a large bredth of genres, but I would look up these bands and explore the "Fans Also Like" section of spotify.
Edit: other bands as I think of them - Rain City Drive, Action/Adventure, Set It Off
i helped crowd surf mark at one of their performances a few years back. i am not always the biggest fan of theirs, but their showmanship was incredible
Well you’re listening to Radio which isn’t the best sample especially this day and age. That being said something I learned about on Reddit that’s really cool is the app Radio Garden if you’re on an iPhone. You can listen to radio stations anywhere in the world for free and it’s great if you’re traveling or working to just try out whatever.
Once I was in line to see this band Mannequin Pussy at a venue in Austin. I was the first, behind a guy who looked super, super cool. I asked him if he was there to see Mannequin Pussy. He said “ohh nah I’m actually in the band playing outside (there was a super tiny indoor and much larger outdoor show at this venue).
I said “cool I’m gonna be seeing you then!” Thinking he was an opener.
He wasn’t. I was super high. He was the lead singer in Black Pumas. They were way bigger than the band I came to see and I didn’t even know it. I had to shamefully move to the line for the dinky little indoor stage and only realized my mistake later when I saw they were nominated for a Grammy. Mannequin Pussy was amazing though 🥰
If you like Khruangbin and Tinariwen check out Tezeta, specifically the artist Mulatu Astatke. You may also like The Budos Band, or Anbessa Orchestra, or The Sorcerors
Not to forget Ali Farka Toure and Mdou Moctar.
My favorite new-ish bands right now:
Mammoth WVH - band started by Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen's kid). Their second album is fantastic, kinda alt rocky / hard rocky stuff. Wolfgang plays all the instruments on the albums, and he's amazing, but nothing those albums do not do them justice live.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - all types of shit from thrash metal to jazz fusion to weird microtonal stuff to boogie rock
SPRINTS - Irish garage punk, their album from earlier this year is super fun and unique
Pollyanna - cool emo punk combo, awesome energy, love their album slime
The Chisel - just kinda classic punk vibes, fast loud and short songs, amazing album from this year
Geese - if I had to pick one band that I think is the future of rock, it's Geese, their album 3D Country was my favorite album from last year, super great (post punky i guess) stuff
I love that after Wolfie's stint as VH's bassist, he played bass for Tremonti until he finally finished up the Mammoth WVH album. Kid is supremely talented.
Gen Z just isn't really that into straight rock. There's a lot of artists coming out with rock roots and influences but for the most part it's all gone way way underground. With that said, here's some noticeable standouts for "guitar music." Most of which is hyper specialized in terms of subgenres.
Crash Adams - Power pop. Their big song "Give Me A Kiss" was one of the biggest songs of the summer on pop radio last year.
Lorna Shore - Progressive Blackened Symphonic Deathcore. Sure they've been around for a decade but in the past few years they've really amped up their musicianship.
Bad Suns - Indie Pop Rock/Power Pop. Fun upbeat and catchy.
Knox - Power Pop. You can hear a lot of influence from the 1975 in this solo artist who writes pop punk inspired highly polished radio pop rock. He even wrote a song about not being The 1975.
Better Lovers - Math Metal Supergroup. Features former members of Every Time I Die and Dillinger Escape Plan. You can probably imagine what that's all about.
Knocked Loose - Deathcore. Probably the household name for deathcore/metalcore in this decade.
Cigatettes After Sex - Indie Ambient. Down tempo, dreamy, surrealist guitar fx driven ambient soft rock. Total numbing relaxation mood music.
Kerry King - Thrash metal. Yes, the famed Slayer guitarist has a solo project. And it sounds like... well... Slayer...
Cannons - Indie Fusion. Female fronted dreaminess.
Kenny Hoopla - Pop Punk. An experimental indie hip hop artist who went full on pop punk in 2021, enlisting the drum services of Travis Barker.
Dominic Fike - Alternative Solo Artist. This guy likes to incorporate endless amounts of genre influences to create a very eclectic sound.
Demi Lovato - Hard Rock. On her last album she completely abandoned her bubblegum pop persona and catalog to be a full on modern day Joan Jett, releasing material with metal, industrial, and punk influences.
Carpenter Brut - Synthwave Industrial. This synthwave artist, heavily inspired by movie Soundtrack composer, John Carpenter, has utilized more rock and industrial sonics into their music.
Dance With The Dead - Another synthwave artist that is incorporating more melodic metal instrumentation into their synth foundations.
COIN - Indie Rock. For fans of bands like Phoenix.
Chappell Roan - New Wave - Female fronted alternative act heavily influenced by new wave of the early 80s.
Happy to see someone mention Chappell Roan, although she’s definitely a little pop-y I think she’s huge with gen z and is definitely in the rock sphere imo. She played a sold out show in my town a few weeks ago and it was all gen z and young millenials
I’m also old, so take these with a grain of salt.
Willow put out a legitimately good pop punk album called in 2022.
There’s also a lot of good synth pop/dark wave stuff coming out, though I don’t know how popular it is outside of the goth/alternative scenes: House of Harm, Topographies, Glass Spells
Chapell Roan is kind of a poppier Olivia Rodrigo and is huge right now.
Aysanabee and Raye Zaragoza both do folk rock. I don’t know how popular they are, but Aysanabee’s album was nominated for a Juno award in Canada.
Edit: fixed typo
I gotchu bro. Here are some recent rock groups:
- Greta Van Fleet: 70’s style rock. Oft compared to Zeppelin
- Dirty Honey: 70’s/80’s style rock. Think GnR, Whitesnake, etc.
- The Blue Stones: 2-piece a’la The Black Keys
- Crown Lands: 2-piece prog group a’la Rush
- Black Honey: Queens of the Stone Age meets Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Rock has gone pretty deep into the underground over the past decade, but it’s still there.
Most people who are really into rock these days are in to sub-genres of metal or hardcore. If you want to find out what's going on in the cool parts of the hard rock scene these days I cannot recommend the podcast "the state of the scene" enough.
In the more hipster lane, kids seem to be into distortion, lofi, shoegaze, slow-core, sad stuff, etc. rather than slick anthemic stuff with big hooks.
Check out: julie, feeble little horse, wisp, bar italia, fleshwater, been stellar, sign crushes motorist, high vis
They’re even discovering older underground stuff that fits the aesthetic like title fight, duster, and panchiko
[Black Pistol Fire](https://youtu.be/5b-fTAfE60s?si=RTPXRZ03Di2dkAKZ)
[All Them Witches](https://youtu.be/kh1Jd8xU42U?si=KTIT-m7qnP8c0JEI)
Both of these videos are older but they are the best at showcasing each band. Both actively touring and putting out new music
Late 50s here. Was always mainly into pop, but that's a genre I just have not been able to relate to for the last several years.
I switched to alternative, which I enjoy, BUT.
I listen to streaming radio all day at work, and the alt station I listen to does a "Nothing but 90s" playlist on Fridays.
Problem is, it's the same songs being played all day Monday-Thursday. Apparently alt music peaked and died in the 90s.
Hey! I'm in the target demographic (early 20s). Here are some albums I enjoyed (will try limit past 5 years), that I think give a well-ish rounded idea of where rock is at the moment. Fair cop I'm also Aussie so there might be a lean that way, a lot of our rock is more surfy and laid back but I'll do my best to give you a variety.
I know a lot of people around me have enjoyed:
Wallows - Model (2024)
King Krule - SHHHHHHH! (2024)
PVRIS - Evergreen (2023)
Hippo Campus - LP3 (2022)
Beabadoobee - Beatopia (2023)
Maneskin - RUSH! (2023)
Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS (2023)
Psych
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse... (2023)
Crumb - Jinx (2019)
Sports - Get a Good Look (2023)
Little more "classic rock"
Ghost - \[MESSAGE FROM THE CLERGY\] (2023)
Greta van Fleet - Starcatcher (2023)
Harder
Northlane - Obsidion (2022)
Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden (2023) (Lotta metalheads don't really like em but I do :) )
Loathe - I Let It in and It Took Everything (2020)
Aussie Stuff
Royel Otis - PRATTS & PAIN (2024) (I met these guys! They're awesome live if you can catch them.)
Ocean Alley - Low Altitude Living (2022)
Hockey Dad - Rebuild Repeat
New/Young genre-bending stuff (is it even rock?) - I would say most of today's music, especially as hyperpop is weaving its' way into pop, tends to be difficult to categorise, so here's some stuff by younger voices that might be interesting to explore!
WILLOW - empathogen (2024)
Jean Dawson - Pixel Bath (2020)
glaive - i care so much that i dont care at all (2023)
But yeah, unfortunately apart from local acts we're not getting much "mainstream" rock anymore, but because of streaming there's also a lot of interesting stuff you can find on your own. For youth who enjoy music, their tastes tend to be extremely varied - mine is certainly not a good cross-section the more I look back at it, but I hope you find something to enjoy :)
Im gonna be so fr, as someone who is 20, it seems like most of the people I know who enjoy the rock/metal genre do not listen to any new bands. I myself listen to a lot of Korn and Black Veil Brides. Other people I know listen to Three Days Grace, Bring Me The Horizon, Motionless In White, Seether…any rock band that came onto the scene in from the 90s-2010 basically.
The only newer bands I’ve enjoyed are Greta Van Fleet (popular) and Dark Divine (very new, not popular).
My 11 year old is obsessed with Olivia so I hear her a lot... yes she's amazing. I was obsessed with Alanis Morissette, Garbage and the Cranberries at her age and I refer to them as my Olivias to my daughter lol
This is a question that has made in this sub to many times, but a lot of younger people are into Hardcore, Nu Metal, Shoegaze, Metalcore and indie, if you want some bands, here's a couple of them: Wargasm, The Last Dinner Party, The Beaches, The Warning, Knocked Loose, Loathe, Sleep Token, Bad Omens, Spiritbox, Sleep Theory, Alpha Wolf, UnityTX, From Ashes to New, Zulu, Scowl, Gel, Spy, Speed, Idles, Yard Act, Fontaines DC, Neck Deep, Static Dress, Vein.fm, Wisp, Quannnic, Glare, Superheaven, Bloodyouth, Bloodywood, Tallah, Drain, Jinjer, Bring Me The Horizon, Hanabie and many other.
Maybe it's because I tend to listen to pop subgenres or I happen to have a lot of pop-loving friends but I feel like rock genuinely isn't as popular or as crucial as it used to be in the past few decades as opposed to pop or folk - *new* rock music anyway, people seem to like Nirvarna, Radiohead, etc a lot still
In terms of 21st century musicians that many people are likely to know Olivia Rodrigo is a very popular solo pop rock singer, you might want to check her out. Mitski has also made so many quality indie rock songs in her career. In terms of bands, the Arctic Monkeys and also Florence + the Machine are still fairly popular too I believe, though they were at their peak about 10 years ago; on the more "indie"(?) side, Big Thief's last album was folk rock from what I've heard.
Idk if popular with the kids but check out Petey if you want to hear a newish band made up of people about our age. "Don't tell the boys" even references The OC.
Spilly Cave - great rock sound, hits on many different rock sub-generes and beyond.
Mk.gee - a softer vibe, but amazing guitar work and a unique approach to production.
Teen Mortgage - great D.C. trash punk band.
Provoker - shoegazy post hardcore with catchy vocals
Atlin Gün - amazing Turkish psych rock with dance beats out of Amsterdam.
Tremantis - new album is egg punky and poppy all at once.
Free The Birds - (Turnstile's) Brendan Yates side project, songwriting chops are on point and a great relaxed feel.
Chanel Beads - hard to describe, liminal and dreamlike rock
Yeah, it seems like a lot of high schoolers and people in their early 20s are into bands like Greta Van Fleet and Måneskin right now. You might want to check them out for some fresh rock vibes.
Honestly my 14 year old has never even used a radio, much less tried to dial in a station on one. He’d probably have a panic attack if I flipped one over to AM.
The Beaches are popular right now I think? But they are a little less rock and a little more pop these days. Their earlier album "The Late Show" is definitely rock and there's not a bad song on the album.
This kind of runs the gamut but I’ve been spinning the new *Soft Kill* record a ton.
*Bleachers* but I guess that’s more pop.
*Moon Safari* put out an epic prog rock album last year. “Teen Angel Meets the Apocalypse” gets a lot of play in my house.
*La Luz* has a great new psychedelic rock album out called “News of The Universe”.
*Home Front* is a great punk/post-punk band that just fuckin’ rocks.
*Soft Play* (formerly *Slaves*) does some cool shit. Their new single “Punks Dead” hits on their name change and how some of their “fans” took it.
I quite dig the new *Vaccines* album.
*Crosses* (Chino from *Deftones* new thing) does some good gothy, light industrial/post-punk stuff.
I second the people who have said *The Last Dinner Party*. Saw them live in a thunderstorm in Austin and it was just about the best time I’ve had.
*King Gizzard* obviously.
*Opus Kink* is doing some really good shit and has this whole Tom Waits meets World/Inferno Friendship Society at Ennio Morricone’s funeral sort of thing going on.
And while it’s more synth pop/post-punk/new wave I have to shout out *Nation of Language* who have put out some really solid albums over the last few years.
Hard Rock hasn’t really been popular in the last decade.
What *is* mainstream is pop rock/punk like Olivia Rodrigo and Benson Boone, or your occasional indie-pop folk band that gets labeled as alt rock like portugal. the man.
As far as what’s popular in hard rock/metal, it’s mostly new music by bands that have been around for a long time. But there are new(ish) artists like I Prevail, The Pretty Reckless, Sleep Token, Spiritbox, The Hu, Bad Omens, Bad Wolves, Royal Blood, and Dorothy.
im a highschooler and kids just dont listen to rock. I think your question is kind of invalid because it really doesn’t exist except for the small minority like me. But some newer rock bands that are good are dirty honey, king gizzard and the lizard wizard, beast in black, civic, the maine, daisy grenade, and jeff rosenstock
25 here. I listen to Ovlov, Been Stellar, Wednesday, Indigo De Souza, Liily, Raue, Fontaines D.C., Wunderhorse, Bar Italia, Beach Bunny, Snail Mail, Bad Nerves, Porcelain Twin, The Last Dinner Party, Lifeguard, Sweet Pill, Mannequin Pussy, Lime Garden, Magdalena Bay.
Pretty sure all of them have released new music within the last year.
Knocked loose, motionless in white, bring me the horizon, fever 333, wage war, thrown, dead post society, poppy, Spiritbox, architects .... I also find a lot of new music (and older great stuff too) by streaming WFUV, which is Fordham's college radio station
As an 18 year old, the biggest modern artists I like are The Warning, Maneskin, Catfish and the Bottleman, Sam Fender, Royal Blood, The Reytons and Nothing But Thieves
The fact that you’re using radio at all is a filter. Your local print newspaper probably doesn’t have ads aimed at the youth, either.
College radio stations are the best. You never know what you’ll hear next, and you just might love it.
WMSE is my go-to, after 7 years of living in Milwaukee. WXPN and KDHX are also excellent.
91.7 used to be my jam back in the mid 90s, late night beat generation on saturday nights was the cats ass.. steven kaye was kind of a knowitall prick tho imo.
Shout out for XPN. Philly rocks!
I was only in Philly for three years. I picked up hundreds of songs and artists in that time, largely from XPN.
“Does nobody young listen to the radio or is rock just not popular anymore?” I’d say both are true.
KEXP and BBC 6music With the latter there is a huge difference between daytime-weekdays and everything else.
KEXP is all that I listen to and has introduced me to so much new music.
college radio is all music and ads for the yoots
My area (Detroit) has several good rock stations, they play a lot of older stuff too. There are at least four
WYCE is a gem
You should try on some Don’t Stop Believing
So you just go ahead and jump
Alot, you need to hear both of those alot.
What’s good in Detroit these days? Grew up in Toledo and 89X was our source of new music.

Yeah I’m Canadian but from a border town, and I listened to 101 the WRIF (the riff!) from 2005-2010 and it was so solid! Is 101 still good?
im going to venture a guess that none who have responded yet are actually high school to early twenties. heres a list alvvays, big thief, phoebe bridgers/boygenius, jay som, beabadoobee, japanese breakfast, soccer mommy, black country new road (if you can call them rock), alex g, willow, the beths, pinegrove, PUP, jeff rosenstock, oso oso, her's, feeble little horse, glass beach, origami angel
Old guy here… saw soccer mommy at a tiny venue a year ago and was blown away. Incredible live show.
If you like soccer mommy, check out Slothrust
Love Slothrust. Saw them put on a show in a skate shop in Jamestown NY, it kicked ass
Pinegrove - Cardinal is an awesome album. “Aphasia” was stuck in my head for a year+
These are similar in vibe to the music I listened to in college in the 00s but I would have called it "indie" before I called it "rock" with typically a softer or poppier sound or leaning more towards folk, and if you listened to this type of music you could be labeled a hipster (which I'm told is now called alt and I have no idea if it has the negative connotation hipster did).
Check out Turnstile Edit: obligatory King Gizzard plug, if you want new rock and haven’t looked them up, they may be the most exciting band around right now.
And then Speed. They seem to be at exactly the same place in their career that Turnstile were when *Nonstop Feeling* dropped. Reckon they’re going to be massive.
A lot of it is indie, you should check out PUP tho, they’re definitely rock.
My teenage son who is a skater / gamer like boygenius and Alex g.
PUP fucking rocks.
Thank you! Love alvvays; saw them at Danforth Music Hall a few years ago. Will check the rest out!
Boygenius is definitely the biggest one among people I know, I’m 15. Julien baker who is the guitarist has phenomenal solo stuff that I think is better than their stuff as a band (no discredit to their work as a band, just julien’s solo stuff is on another level)
Seconded, "Sprained Ankle" is so good but heartbreaking
I dig Julien’s stuff, but I’m more of a Phoebe and Lucy fan as soloists.
I’m 30 and I listen to the majority of these bands (BCNR is probably my favorite). Do the youths not have their own thing they’re hiding from us golden oldies?
I think that would be hyperpop. 100 Gecs, Frost Children, and Machine Girl, are a few artists that draw a lot from punk/hardcore
I'm 49 and Machine Girl is my favorite modern band.
so good
Harder to hide shit when it's all streaming and algorithms help you find stuff.
lol same, are we still hip at 30? Kind of refreshing if so, bc I haven’t felt in the loop since before the pandemic
Same! I guess everybody else kinda lost touch with the world the same time we did.
100% Machine Gun Kelly aka "MGK," rapper turned pop punk artist. Not really sure who else to add similar to that without stepping on some toes lol.
He still exists? I feel like he was a product of the 2010s
Is jeff rosenstock still big with young ppl? I'm 33 and he was a legend of the scene 10-15 yrs ago. That rules.
Very big. Saw him on tour for his new album about 2 months ago and the audience might've been majority college-aged.
Adding to this: Sir Chloe, Movements, Snail Mail, Chloe Moriondo, Pom Pom Squad, late night drive home, Mannequin Pussy, Gleemer, Teenage Wrist, Arm's Length
Rosenstock def isn’t new at all but this is a solid ass list overall
Throw in some wet leg, warmduscher, and amyl and the sniffers while yer at it.
Soccer mommy and pup are my favs here
Nice to see PUP is still around, I saw them a bunch with Pkew Pkew Pkew 7-8 years ago now.
The kids listen to Oso Oso? Hell yeah
Glass Beach recognition is incredible
Massive upvote for Japanese Breakfast. I have Paprika on VERY heavy rotation
This... is the best & most accurate list posted here so far
Her's is considered rock??? Maybe I'm thinking of another band with a similar name but I consider Her's bedroom pop definitely not rock.
The Beths are so good!
Soft rock is the new rock.
The world is depressed and wants sad music. Oso Oso and Jeff Rosenstock aren't too soft from this list, though!
Hey, I know and really enjoy a few of these (37,M). Phoebe and Pinegrove are great. Think Soccer Mommy I’ve enjoyed too.
My girlfriend and I are in our mid-to-late thirties and we actively listen to at least ten of those artists regularly. Does that means we’re still “with it”?
This list is solid. I’d also add Momma, Microwave, & Fontaines D.C.
Momma are great!
Solid list here. Even though I’m mid 30s now I listen to a lot of these artists. I’d add cleopatrick and bilmuri too
My daughter said something about Wallows. Whatever that means.
This is the first answer I’ve seen in this entire thread that is actually music that Gen Z / Gen Alpha typically listens to
Wallows is great
The UMass radio station has an amazing lineup of student DJs that play whatever music they like or are in the mood to play. Wallows is definitely a popular one. Also been playing a lot of Crumb and Guerilla Toss. I put it on in my work truck driving around and I feel like a millennial who is still hip lmao
Latest album has fingerprints of the strokes all over it while having plenty of their own style
You've convinced me to check them out
They are fantastic and good dudes!
Sleep Token and Turnstile are two newish rock bands that are fairly popular.
I only know Turnstile because there was a story about someone [pooping in one of their mosh pits and the poop getting all over everyone](https://consequence.net/2021/09/turnstile-poop-moshpit/amp/)
Turnstile is who I thought of. Saw them open for Blink 182 last year, felt like a passing of the torch
My niecfews listen to them. Not bad. We go one for one on the Spotify app and I try to get as close to the song they played with something old. I got my nephew into The Clash.
Just got my 13yo daughter into the Beastie Boys doing this. I've already had her into the Kinks & Talking Heads. She loves some Blondie.
fyi, niblings is a good word to describe nieces and nephews.
My wife and I went to go see Mother Mother last week. We were easily some of the oldest people there by almost 10 years. We’re in our late 20s.
Hm, I saw Mother Mother a couple weeks ago and we are... older than you :) It was a pretty young crowd, although it seemed a majority of them were there to see Cavetown.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Regardless of the question on this sub, this is always an answer
that's because they have an album in apparently every genre
This is the real answer, OP.
And if you don’t like what you hear, just keep trying their other albums until you do.
Also, WEEN. Kids love the Boog
Ween is as old as I am.
Really? They formed when I was in high school back in '84.
The Boognish is eternal
So brown that its evergreen
They were also the direct inspiration for a little show you might've heard of called Spongebob Squarepants. As long as Spongebob memes are here, so is Ween.
I'm familiar. I'm from Eastern PA, and as I said, they formed when I was in high school. Been a fan for a long time. I was just kinda surprised that someone making a thread asking about new rock bands would be directed to Ween.
That surprises me, but I support it.
King Gizzard is single handedly carrying prog and psych rock on their backs, and dabbling in a half dozen other genres just for fun.
So many good Aussie bands releasing new music now, it's like they are the main push for new rock music these days.
I first dipped into them with Spotify 'this is king gizzard' I thought it kept jumping to different bands, one song was a grimey sludge metal type song, the next was something that would feature on a cafe del Mar soundtrack.
ITT: a bunch of out of touch elder millennials trying to pass off bands that have been around for 20 years as “new music” that young people listen to lmao Some actual answers (from an only mostly out of touch millennial): Good Kid, Wallows, Internet Girl, Cavetown, Lovejoy (they got “canceled” cuz their singer is kind of a POS but the music is good), re6ce, grandson, SYML, Måneskin, Powfu, The Rare Occasions, EKKSTACY, I Prevail, Pale Waves, blackbear, Games We Play, Surf Curse, Stand Atlantic AFAIK all of these bands & artists began/started putting music out in the last 10 years or less
They all sound like an A&R pitch deck.
Maneskin sounds as if bland was a sound
Their cover of the Four Seasons’ Beggin’ was kind of soulless and Imagine Dragons-y.
Are you really sleeping on The Backseat Lovers rn?
Just couldn’t really get into them tbh. Musically some cool tunes but I’m not a fan of the singer
Big ups for Stand Atlantic! I’d add Honey Revenge, RedHook, Magnolia Park, and Girlfriends to the list too!
Geez, grandson is the only one I know and love, but seems kind-of older now. Do "da youts" still listen to him? Planning to check out a bunch more from this thread.
The young people love Still Woozy. And Royel Otis. And The Last Dinner Party. And whatever trends on TikTok.
Still Woozy is my exact age and his last album is from 10 years ago! 😭 Will check the other two out! TY
I’m in my mid 30s and I dig Royel Otis! Also check out All Them Witches and Idles.
Up vote All Them Witches!
....Still Woozy's last (and first full length according to spotify) album is from three years ago?
His new album comes out in 3 days!
I can’t stop singing the praises of the Royel Otis live cover of the song “Murder on the Dance Floor.” It’s terrific. So good the radio stations are playing the live recording. So good the live version is on Spotify, Apple Music, etc Here’s the YouTube link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sQyL3mUVDWA
So much good rock right now. Popular rn are mainly bands in hardcore, punk, and post-punk. Traditional rock isn't really in that much.
Can you tip me to some bands? Plz & TY?
Turnstile, Amyl & the Sniffers
Knocked Loose
Edit: other bands as I think of them - Rain City Drive, Action/Adventure, Set It Off
Idles Militarie Gun Gel Drain
Drug Church
Geese, Viagra Boys
Stream KEXP Seattle online fm90.3 in Seattle area. They play alot of new music and no commercials
Was just gonna plug my own local station, thank you for doing the honors!
Idles
i helped crowd surf mark at one of their performances a few years back. i am not always the biggest fan of theirs, but their showmanship was incredible
Love Idles!
Check out Khruangbin, it’s not rock per se but it is guitar music
High school kids dont listen to Khruangbin. NPR adults do.
As an NPR adult… yeahhh
![gif](giphy|1Qdp4trljSkY8)
This is me I feel seen, next you’re going to tell me kids don’t listen to Black Pumas.
Going to see Mannequin Pussy over Black Pumas makes you infinitely cooler
Love me some Khruangbin.
Saw them during their 2022 tour. Immaculate vibe and musicianship.
I discovered them this year. Anybody who likes them should def check out Tinawaren
If you like Khruangbin and Tinariwen check out Tezeta, specifically the artist Mulatu Astatke. You may also like The Budos Band, or Anbessa Orchestra, or The Sorcerors Not to forget Ali Farka Toure and Mdou Moctar.
My favorite new-ish bands right now: Mammoth WVH - band started by Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen's kid). Their second album is fantastic, kinda alt rocky / hard rocky stuff. Wolfgang plays all the instruments on the albums, and he's amazing, but nothing those albums do not do them justice live. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - all types of shit from thrash metal to jazz fusion to weird microtonal stuff to boogie rock SPRINTS - Irish garage punk, their album from earlier this year is super fun and unique Pollyanna - cool emo punk combo, awesome energy, love their album slime The Chisel - just kinda classic punk vibes, fast loud and short songs, amazing album from this year Geese - if I had to pick one band that I think is the future of rock, it's Geese, their album 3D Country was my favorite album from last year, super great (post punky i guess) stuff
First time seeing someone say Knocked Loose is deathcore
Here are some recent rock groups: - Greta Van Fleet: 70’s style rock. Oft compared to Zeppelin - Dirty Honey: 70’s/80’s style rock. Think GnR, Whitesnake, etc. - The Blue Stones: 2-piece a’la The Black Keys - Crown Lands: 2-piece prog group a’la Rush - Black Honey: Queens of the Stone Age meets Yeah Yeah Yeahs Rock has gone pretty deep into the underground over the past decade, but it’s still there.
I live in a city where the rock radio is a generic iHeart station and Greta van fleet, dirty honey, and black honey get played
Check out: julie, feeble little horse, wisp, bar italia, fleshwater, been stellar, sign crushes motorist, high vis They’re even discovering older underground stuff that fits the aesthetic like title fight, duster, and panchiko
[Black Pistol Fire](https://youtu.be/5b-fTAfE60s?si=RTPXRZ03Di2dkAKZ) [All Them Witches](https://youtu.be/kh1Jd8xU42U?si=KTIT-m7qnP8c0JEI) Both of these videos are older but they are the best at showcasing each band. Both actively touring and putting out new music
All Them Witches are my favorite new-ish band. Their albums are really good and then put on an Incredible live show.
Idles, Viagra Boys, Fountains DC, Yard Act Queens of the stone age are always the goods.
Found the 40 year old
Late 50s here.
Fontaine's D.C
I know a lot of people around me have enjoyed: Wallows - Model (2024) King Krule - SHHHHHHH! (2024) PVRIS - Evergreen (2023) Hippo Campus - LP3 (2022) Beabadoobee - Beatopia (2023) Maneskin - RUSH! (2023) Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS (2023) Psych King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse... (2023) Crumb - Jinx (2019) Sports - Get a Good Look (2023) Little more "classic rock" Ghost - \[MESSAGE FROM THE CLERGY\] (2023) Greta van Fleet - Starcatcher (2023) Harder Northlane - Obsidion (2022) Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden (2023) (Lotta metalheads don't really like em but I do :) ) Loathe - I Let It in and It Took Everything (2020) Aussie Stuff Royel Otis - PRATTS & PAIN (2024) (I met these guys! They're awesome live if you can catch them.) Ocean Alley - Low Altitude Living (2022) Hockey Dad - Rebuild Repeat New/Young genre-bending stuff (is it even rock?) - I would say most of today's music, especially as hyperpop is weaving its' way into pop, tends to be difficult to categorise, so here's some stuff by younger voices that might be interesting to explore! WILLOW - empathogen (2024) Jean Dawson - Pixel Bath (2020) glaive - i care so much that i dont care at all (2023) But yeah, unfortunately apart from local acts we're not getting much "mainstream" rock anymore, but because of streaming there's also a lot of interesting stuff you can find on your own. For youth who enjoy music, their tastes tend to be extremely varied - mine is certainly not a good cross-section the more I look back at it, but I hope you find something to enjoy :)
Nothing But Thieves
I love Nothing But Thieves
Ghost is becoming increasingly popular with the younger crowd
Im gonna be so fr, as someone who is 20, it seems like most of the people I know who enjoy the rock/metal genre do not listen to any new bands. I myself listen to a lot of Korn and Black Veil Brides. Other people I know listen to Three Days Grace, Bring Me The Horizon, Motionless In White, Seether…any rock band that came onto the scene in from the 90s-2010 basically. The only newer bands I’ve enjoyed are Greta Van Fleet (popular) and Dark Divine (very new, not popular).
Olivia Rodrigo. But for the most part, the spirit of rock music largely lives on through fusion genres like hyperpop.
Came here to say this. If you liked Avril back in the day, Olivia's latest album Guts leans towards pop-punk a bit.
Maybe it's because I tend to listen to pop subgenres or I happen to have a lot of pop-loving friends but I feel like rock genuinely isn't as popular or as crucial as it used to be in the past few decades as opposed to pop or folk - *new* rock music anyway, people seem to like Nirvarna, Radiohead, etc a lot still In terms of 21st century musicians that many people are likely to know Olivia Rodrigo is a very popular solo pop rock singer, you might want to check her out.
Florence is doing very well. Her most recent album was pretty successful I think
But arctic monkeys and Florence are very solidly like my era rock. Their first albums were on the radio when I was 16. I’m looking for new stuff
Hmm... have you heard of English Teacher and boygenius? They both released albums very recently
I like Dawes Check out “From A Window Seat”
Idk if popular with the kids but check out Petey if you want to hear a newish band made up of people about our age. "Don't tell the boys" even references The OC.
They aren’t brand new but newer… I think Starcrawler is pretty awesome. I saw a few others mentioned IDOLS and I agree, they are so good.
Turnstile. I saw them with Blink 182 last year and our worlds collided
If you can somehow tune to KEXP Seattle, they will have everything anybody here has mentioned.
Spilly Cave - great rock sound, hits on many different rock sub-generes and beyond. Mk.gee - a softer vibe, but amazing guitar work and a unique approach to production. Teen Mortgage - great D.C. trash punk band. Provoker - shoegazy post hardcore with catchy vocals Atlin Gün - amazing Turkish psych rock with dance beats out of Amsterdam.
Polyphia
Honestly my 14 year old has never even used a radio, much less tried to dial in a station on one. He’d probably have a panic attack if I flipped one over to AM.
Dead Poet Society, Highly Suspect, ReignWolf, Cleopatrik
has anybody suggested IDLES yet?
Ghost is very popular with us young people. I haven't seen them mentioned yet.
I love Ghost. Absolutely love them.
Geese and Horse Girl are good “new rock” bands. Geese’s album 3D Country is SO good.
The warning is a good rock band to check out. You will not be disappointed
im a highschooler and kids just dont listen to rock. I think your question is kind of invalid because it really doesn’t exist except for the small minority like me. But some newer rock bands that are good are dirty honey, king gizzard and the lizard wizard, beast in black, civic, the maine, daisy grenade, and jeff rosenstock
Not sure how popular they are with the kids, but Kaleo is a really great blues-based rock group out of Iceland! Also the Italian group Maneskin
[The Warning](https://youtu.be/97Pxe9KTgJc)
Knocked loose, motionless in white, bring me the horizon, fever 333, wage war, thrown, dead post society, poppy, Spiritbox, architects .... I also find a lot of new music (and older great stuff too) by streaming WFUV, which is Fordham's college radio station
As an 18 year old, the biggest modern artists I like are The Warning, Maneskin, Catfish and the Bottleman, Sam Fender, Royal Blood, The Reytons and Nothing But Thieves
