Shoegaze is somewhat adjacent to some of the 80s alternative. The Cure->Goth->DarkWave->DreamWave->Dream Pop->Shoegaze. Check out Slowdive's last two albums: Slowdive & 'everything is alive' for newer, but definitely explore older Shoegaze: [https://www.loudersound.com/features/shoegaze-essential-albums](https://www.loudersound.com/features/shoegaze-essential-albums)
Also, I think some Alt R&B like SOHN and electronica like Phantogram and Beacon scratch this itch for me.
If you like early The Cure, I recommend 'Garlands - Cocteau Twins'. I recommend Cocteau Twins in general, but that one is closest to bands you mentioned.
I've heard that [Molcha Doma](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1nVq0hKIVReeaiB3xJgKf0?si=9hHXaja3QsC7rCD5DWiFQg) has the vibe of a New Order or Depeche Mode.
Olivia Rodrigo's [GUTS](https://open.spotify.com/album/1xJHno7SmdVtZAtXbdbDZp?si=8lAF_TWrTsWqA07AJAD2dg) has an 80s-90s alt vibe to it

Tears for fears Songs from the big chair and The Hurting
Well over 50 myself and 80’s was my decade. However, I wasn’t a fan of most 90’s music. There are a few that stood out for me though,
Jellyfish - amazing 2 albums. The growth between albums is awesome to hear and yet both albums are genius.
Matthew Sweet - he had a run where he was cranking out great rock and roll.
Blind Melon - Shannon you are missed.
Dada - one big hit, a decade of great records no one heard.
But what I wanted to share was that somewhere around 2004 or thereabouts, a new wave of alternative rock hit. From here till about 2012, so much great new music was dropping on the weekly. There are already so many suggestions above in this range. I would add,
Biffy Clyro
White Lies
The Airborne Toxic Event
Band of Horses
The Revivalists
Elbow
The Flaming Lips
Modest Mouse
The Raconteurs
The Zutons
Andrew Bird
Franz Ferdinand
There are so many more. I could go on for awhile and yet I’m still discovering bands from this timeline.
The fun is in the search and discovery.
Ps. Not much to discover in the last decade. I still search but mehhh. Waiting for another wave to hit.
I love all these bands!! Here is my [giant playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6GGq1bcNT60rUb6RUAS78i?si=_offmFVhTKqpxYN7WV8bsg&pi=u-6RUiT_UQSySn) of new and old goth, shoegaze, and new wave.
Because you like those bands you might like

[Tempers](https://youtu.be/ediwvTXc_mk?si=kI-NVgYgPBLAAaex)
They aren't THAT new (20-25 years old rather than 40+ old) but The Killers might have some songs for you. Somebody Told Me, All The Things That I've Done, When You Were Young, and of course Mr. Brightside. See if that does anything for you.
Sweetness- Jimmy Eat World
The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
No One - Cold
Heathens - Twenty-one Pilots
Ride - Twenty-one Pilots
The World I Know - Collective Soul
December - Collective Soul
Like A Stone - Audioslave
I also love 80s/90s alternative, and alongside Mitski, Beach House, etc. you may also find something of interest in:
-the album "All Mirrors" by Angel Olsen, which has a strong 80s vibe (eg the track "What It Is");
-"Horns Surrounding Me" by Julia Holter;
-"Crude Drawing of an Angel" by Caroline Polachek, and her New Order-ish cover of "Spring is Coming with a Strawberry in the Mouth";
-"Ribs" by Lorde;
-some of St. Vincent's early songs, like "Cruel" + "Marrow";
-"Pantala Azul" by Mabe Fratti.
Broadcast are older in comparison (their last completed studio album was from 2008) + don't have a big following, but they're also very good and well worth the listen; LCD Soundsystem were also active in the 2000s but they're definitely in a very synthpop/New Wave style, and still seem fairly popular. In addition there are many post-punk revival/inspired bands currently active in Ireland and Britain such as Fontaines DC, black midi, Squid, etc. which you might also find fun to investigate - the debut album by NewDad, "Madra", apparently has a strong Cure vibe.
I'm probably the same generation as you are if you listened to 80's alt when you were younger. My current favorite bands are Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fall Out Boy. I know RHCP was around in our day as well, but they have continued to make excellent music this entire time.
My son recommends Saint Motel as a band with 80's sensibilities that is more current.
Anytime anyone ever asks for a 90's band recommendation, I always say Jellyfish.
Their first album Bellybutton is so good and so 90s in all the right ways. A great listen all the way through
Love those bands ! I bet there's some here you'd like :)

Check out “Petey” and “the reds, pinks and purples”. Petey’s lean into life album has some New Order vibes (the less synthy songs of new order) and the reds pinks and purples are very much Smiths inspired.
The Brat- Slaughter of an Ancient Tribe
Late 70s-early 80s punk band out of L.A. Due to record label fuckery, the most of their tracks didn’t get released until 2017 . If you like the psychedelic furs or Berlin, this may be up your alley.
The Gaslight Anthem
The Sundays, especially Static and Silence. (Seriously, that whole album is magical)
Hard Fi*
Lowe Vs Diamond*
Butthole Surfers
The Residents
(* They've since broken up. )
I think you would like [RVG](https://youtu.be/ywbfiYL6CbA?si=MC0EwXX5aGZSaCbC)

[Hookworms ](https://open.spotify.com/track/6qS2UHaSdf2mWJhSxR95yQ?si=F6nEJPYlRzKuArzEsR59Tw) are good, but I think one of the members was a bit dodgy, so they are kind of cancelled now
I believe I heard this song in a bar just a month ago, turns out, its from the 80s and I never heard it before:
Adrian Borland - Living on the Edge of God
Check more of him out too, and The Sound.
I do...or maybe I should say, I did. I can't listen to The Cure or the Smiths anymore. In reality, I can't listen to many of my old favorites anymore.
I have also wanted to find something new. Sometimes Pandora and/Youtube will suggest something "new" (new to me) that I'll like. Recently, Pandora has suggested four songs from Still Corners that I've liked:
[Downtown (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv3kZZYca8M)
[In the Middle of the Night (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gZzvKwb1rU)

Have you kept up with Morrissey over the years? His 2004 release, You Are the Quarry, is one of his best. I especially like “I’m Not Sorry” and “The World Is Full of Crashing Bores.”
Topographies. Dark wave band based in San Francisco. The lead singer is the son of Lol Tollhurst from Cure.
[False desire](https://youtu.be/w9y9hvJrpnA?si=nTuHtsXLnGqXiqI_)
Those were all some of my favorite bands, and I still listen to them to this day!
My kids got me into Ninja Sex Party
I accidentally discovered Heilung
Gunship is an awesome synth wave band that sounds like/invokes that 80's feel
If you like the Cure the last two Twisted Ecstasy albums have been influenced by them and MGMT has a song called In the Afternoon with a very Cure esque bassline!
Yard Act are pretty post punk too if that interests you and Just Mustard may also be of interest:))
Try these from back in the day
Modern Eon
Sad Lovers and Giants - Epic Garden Music
The Sound - Lions mouth
Chameleons a script of the bridge
Many more

The Reytons Public Service Broadcasting Elbow Aurora Anna B Savage Adrienne Lenker Big Thief The Last Dinner Party Goat Girl Richard Hawley John Grant Mudhoney
These are my modern New Wave type finds
[Nation of Language ](https://youtu.be/cidhSoFte3k?si=HVnjAjMCr7oZT0nX) are one of my favourite newer bands

[Metronomy](https://youtu.be/9PnOG67flRA?si=4MhRyc6LWNmQm-db)
Not new wave:
[Skinshape](https://youtu.be/3I1HfRxvAqw?si=_WBskGHkzfnLKFLc) they kind of reminds me of stuff my Dad liked, 60s inspired 80s like Paisley Underground stuff.
Blondshell - Disappointment
Rosegarden Funeral Party - Ill and Getting Worse
John Maus - Hey Moon
Future Islands - Plastic Beach
Adwaith - Sudd

I would check out White Stripes/Raconteurs/anything Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys and see if that works for you.
These are great recs. I listen to them all . I would love to add wolfmother.
They seemed like a good way to keep some of op’s vibe but expand it out.
Don’t agree

Yeah Yeah Yeahs LCD Soundsystem
Especially “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem.
I don't really care for 80s music, but I definitely love The Cure. Do you like Muse, or Social Distortion? Or Gary Clark Jr.?
Gary Clark Jr is one of my favorite artists. I also listen to Robert Randolf and the Family Band, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov't Mule, Marcus King Band, JJ Grey and Mofro, Southern Avenue, Samantha Fish, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Ana Popovic.....
I second the rec for MUSE.
Our Lady Peace’s first two albums are great, alternative, and released in the 90s. *Naveed* and *Clumsy*.
Check out “Petey” and “the reds, pinks and purples”. Petey’s lean into life album has some New Order vibes (the less synthy songs of new order) and the reds pinks and purples are very much Smiths inspired.

If you like the Cure the last two Twisted Ecstasy albums have been influenced by them and MGMT has a song called In the Afternoon with a very Cure esque bassline! Yard Act are pretty post punk too if that interests you and Just Mustard may also be of interest:))
Heyday -The Church awesome album Starfish is pretty great too

From your taste, try Black Marble! Newer band but still has the great classic synth feel.
Alvvays. Try their songs "Archie, Marry Me," "Dreams Tonite," and "In Undertow." Their guitars and bittersweet lyrics might appeal to fans of The Smiths and The Cure.
Gary Numan, Ultravox, Japan, OMD all early 80’s might interest you .. give it a listen. 🎵
My fault, I guess I didn't clarify that I was looking for newer bands. I do love OMD though.
Thanks for your post OP.. I’m glad you like OMD. I hope you find some great music! All the best!🎵
All the time. I have Offspring radio on right now enjoying a minor hangover.

These are my modern New Wave type finds [Nation of Language ](https://youtu.be/cidhSoFte3k?si=HVnjAjMCr7oZT0nX) are one of my favourite newer bands [Maxïmo Park](https://youtu.be/LT836iIJW4c?si=O8FjJeRMYMFp1KWn) are another favourite, but not sure they count as new. Been around for about 20 years now. [STRFKR](https://youtu.be/mkeOoWquAqk?si=TK09LTKs5Pf2t6XZ) [Metronomy](https://youtu.be/9PnOG67flRA?si=4MhRyc6LWNmQm-db) Not new wave: [Skinshape](https://youtu.be/3I1HfRxvAqw?si=_WBskGHkzfnLKFLc) they kind of reminds me of stuff my Dad liked, 60s inspired 80s like Paisley Underground stuff.
Check out MGMT, the Killers and Kindofkind.
