I remember getting Doom1 shareware (on floppies) from some cereal. I always wondered how they managed to pull putting a game 17+ game in something meant for kids.
doom predates the esrb and was one of the games that caused it, mortal kombat and nighttrap being the ones other ones, because they were on consoles which most people back then and even today see as for kids.
Pretty sure this happened a year or two after esrb was founded (wiki says in '94), as it was in my early high school years.
But that's a good point. Maybe they hadn't rated it yet at that time.
