The DS/3DS have so many Mystery Dungeon games it's crazy. you have Blue Rescue Team, Explorers, Shiren The Wanderer 1 remake, Shiren The Wanderer GB2 remake, Shiren The Wanderer 4, Shiren The Wanderer 5, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, Gates to Infinity, Super Mystery Dungeon, and finally Etrian Mystery Dungeon 1 and 2.
A homebrewed system has access to even more MD games as well. my 3DS is truly a Mystery Dungeon machine
nintendo hasnt abandoned it lol. they've mentioned it in their paper mario poll from like 2 months back and pokemon is adknowledging it in their pokedex series
same with the ranger games
those didn’t even get to the 3ds i’ll never forgive them for that a wiiu one as well it’s too late for us ranger fans now best we’ll get is a phone game and i doubt that even
I mean it was just Pokemon Colosseum's story... again. Every time. Like most of the rest of pokemon too.
Colosseum: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
XD: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
DPPt: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
Ranger 1: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
Ranger 2: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
Ranger 3: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit. Admittedly, they throw another twist on top of it, though.
XY: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
SM: Rich girl who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
SwSh: Rich guy who seems innocent turns out to be the big bad, wants to use powerful pokemon for personal profit.
The Ranger series had better execution of the formula, but it was still really easy to see the plot twists coming miles away.
I mean... yeah? It's pretty obvious when you think about it.
- The bad guy has to be rich, so that he has underlings you have to fight.
- The bad guy has to seem innocent at first, because it's set in an ordered society where crime only occurs in the shadows. It wouldn't be a very modern-day-Japan-ish setting if the intro also had "Also, just across the pond, there's Hitler. Watch out for him, he wants to kill everyone".
- The bad guy has to want to use powerful Pokemon, because it's a Pokemon game.
- If you're defining "personal profit" as "getting something out of it", then... well, it doesn't *have to* be that way - lots of RPGs have bad guys that want to kill everyone for no raisin - but those guys suck and I'm glad Pokemon doesn't do that.
Sure, they don't *need* a human bad guy - they could take the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon route and have the danger be negative emotions (Gates), negative emotions (Super), negative emotions (WiiWare), or a rock (Rescue Team) - but it's a lot easier to write about a bad guy that does bad things because they're a bad guy.
It's a remake of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team and some people prefer the old game to the remake (Nostalgia, lack of visitable friend areas, changes to IQ skills, not being able to change the team leader outside of dungeons...)
You can definitely change leaders outside of dungeons, I can also name a lot more cons in old PMD rb, and they're not just nitpicks, like the fact bosses possibly wouldn't join you.
By changing leader I mean the one that you control during the free roam part of the game (in the waking up cutscene and being able to roam Pokémon Square), the only games that's possible is R/B Rescue Team and Gates to Infinity (kinda).
I agree that bosses not auto joining was a pain in the behind, but some people embraced the "challenge" of recruiting them like some form of messed up shiny hunting
Yeah. Tbh as much as past me probably would have disliked it. Having pokemon like Groudon (-10 recruit)
The regis with .1 recruit.
Deoxys I think had a negative recruit rate. And all it came down to was "you didn't get them? Restart the game and retry from the save point till you get them"
That or "there's no save points in buried relic. You have to go 99 floors or escape rope every time you don't get the Regis"
Mod your 3ds people! (Obviously not directed at op)
This is how I played explorers and mother 3, since the 3ds runs ds and gba games natively, very worth it
Is it possible to make the PMD Explorer games work on your 3DS just by putting the DS cartridge in it, without any modding? I know that Pokemon White 2 does work on the 3DS with the DS cartridge without any modding, but I'm not sure if it's the case for all DS games.
A moded 3ds is probably the best handheld ever, sadly mine is not in the best condition and people here sell some like they are made of gold or something
Yeah, Switch was a relatively dry era for the PMD series. I actually got it 3 years post release solely for Rescue Team DX, now with a huge library 4 years later. It's a fantastic title, adore it.
Switch 2 is definitely on its way in 2025: at the very least the announcement is, but I imagine it'll be there for holiday season 2025.
Here's to hoping for more PMD adventures on Switch 2 :')
Well, they nailed the mega evolution mechanic in DX so I think if they wanted to they could come up with a way to introduce branching evolutions. Could be map based like in Super?
Pretty off topic but OP do you have Pokemon HG/SS on your modded 3DS? I've been having problem with that games with it saying communication error rendering them unplayable. Even the hacked rom Mind Crystal does it too.
Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo DS has Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, and the 3DS has Super Mystery Dungeon and Gates to Infinity. If you're okay with a bit of *emulation*, you can also play the GBA-exclusive Red Rescue Team, which is similar to Blue Rescue Team, but with some exclusives (which you can still get in Blue) and downgraded features from the DS version.
The odd one out is the Rescue Team DX, which was released on the Switch, and is fundamentally the same plot-wise as Red/Blue Rescue Team.
sorry I’m dumb and stupid. can you explain like I’m 8. I have the universal updater ofc but is ndsforwarder something I need to download separately or is it a setting?
You might also find [this guide](https://retrogamecorps.com/2023/04/08/3ds-hack-guide/#NDS) helpful -- read *steps 3. & 4.* in the *"Add NDS games..."* section.
There's NDS forwarder. Pretty handy but the only downside to using it is that you can only have 40 dsiware on your home menu at a time, which includes your DS games that you bring to the home screen with forwarder. I've heard that there's another app that brings them over as 3ds titles to use the 3ds title limit (I think like 300?). Downsides I know of are no animated icons and games take longer to load
So just because RTDX isn't on DS means that it's not a worthy installment in the series? Or are you one of those people that doesn't consider certain games canon to a series if it doesn't live up to your standards?
...Neither? I never said it wasn't good, I was pointing out the fact that it was a remake of a game we DID have. Infact, I would actually prefer DX to Blue. But in terms of playing through the whole series, they're interchangable due to them being different versions of the same game.

it's crazy, but it's also hella' convenient. also a tad bit sad too, given how the entire series is on an outdated and abandoned handheld like that.
It isn't abandoned in our hearts!
We haven't abandoned it!! That's what counts, even if Nintendo did!!!
nintendo hasnt abandoned it lol. they've mentioned it in their paper mario poll from like 2 months back and pokemon is adknowledging it in their pokedex series
I never had one in the first place. Im left out
Good thing we have RetroArch now for mobile gaming
Technically the entire main series up to Gen 7 as well (if you Homebrew for Gen 3, that is)
Can’t run a wiiware game sadly. All the western ones though!
Damn seeing old 3DS game icons now hits differently 😔 Super came out like 9 years ago dude
same with the ranger games those didn’t even get to the 3ds i’ll never forgive them for that a wiiu one as well it’s too late for us ranger fans now best we’ll get is a phone game and i doubt that even
I fucking miss Pokémon Ranger; the storyline was *so good*
I mean it was just Pokemon Colosseum's story... again. Every time. Like most of the rest of pokemon too. So you're telling me capitalism has been the real villain all along
Red/Blue: Rich Guy who seems evil turns out to be a gym leader and evil and wants to use pokemon for personal profit.
I mean... yeah? It's pretty obvious when you think about it. - The bad guy has to be rich, so that he has underlings you have to fight. - The bad guy has to seem innocent at first, because it's set in an ordered society where crime only occurs in the shadows. Or time/darkness/sky with "time stopping"
Yeah, that. The time stops. Made by the powerful Pokemon the bad guy used for personal profit.
No Mystery Dungeon DX on 3ds though. If you want to count that.
Shouldn't it count? I'm new to the Fandom, but this is the first thing I thought of. Could someone help me understand?

That's not more challenging, that's just doing the same challenge over and over again.
Yeah. Tbh as much as past me probably would have disliked it. Having pokemon like Groudon (-10 recruit) The regis with .1 recruit. Deoxys I think had a negative recruit rate. Regis are a given because you have to go through multiple times to get mew anyways.
Ohhh I see. Thank you!
They should make a pmd collection for the switch. Either a remastered of all three of the games or just adapted for the console
And sell it for around 6 months!
They already have the remake of the first one on the Switch.
Hacking my 3DS was one of my best moves ever, hf !
Mod your 3ds people! (Obviously not directed at op) This is how I played explorers and mother 3, since the 3ds runs ds and gba games natively, very worth it
If I mod my 3DS can I still send my legitimate Pokémon from bank to home?
Sure! Bank still working after hacking my system
kid named rtdx:
We have blue rescue team it's good enough
...you're still missing the obscure wii-ware PMD games that were finally fantranslated a few years back, though.
We have friendship areas and protag switching, we're better than them!
As much as I love partner switching I like how your partner sticks around in DX. It made me very sad when my partner became a generic recruit.
But RTDX has the superior dojo.
How do you have both original DS games on the system? Modded?
Yes
Is it possible to make the PMD Explorer games work on your 3DS just by putting the DS cartridge in it, without any modding? I know that Pokemon White 2 does work on the 3DS with the DS cartridge without any modding, but I'm not sure if it's the case for all DS games.
Its the case for all games
I feel really lucky my 3ds still works now
Not just all of PMD but also most of the main line games as well
A moded 3ds is probably the best handheld ever, sadly mine is not in the best condition and people here sell some like they are made of gold or something

I want a new pmd game but I wouldn't mind a remake
Yep, same. Remake of Explorers of Sky would be amazing, but we are due for a brand new emotionally damaging & heartwrenching experience :D
I wanna have a Scorbunny partner dammit!
I really want Hisuian Typhlosion but I doubt that will happen. Sprigatito, though, is very possible and necessary!!
I do wonder how regional forms would work. Alolan Raichu is a obvious addition, but how would we have the choice for evolving it?
Well, they nailed the mega evolution mechanic in DX so I think if they wanted to they could come up with a way to introduce branching evolutions. Could be map based like in Super?
It would be fun if they introduced a hub solely for the purpose of adding regional forms
Yoo ykw blasters
Pretty off topic but OP do you have Pokemon HG/SS on your modded 3DS? I've been having problem with that games with it saying communication error rendering them unplayable. Even the hacked rom Mind Crystal does it too.
Which system is that?
Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo DS has Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, and the 3DS has Super Mystery Dungeon and Gates to Infinity. If you're okay with a bit of *emulation*, you can also play the GBA-exclusive Red Rescue Team, which is similar to Blue Rescue Team, but with some exclusives (which you can still get in Blue) and downgraded features from the DS version. Wait. How ?
Cool!
If It's a (modded) 3DS, I envy your carpal-tunnel free hands. 😅 No matter what grip I use, my hands die, after 6-10 minutes of gameplay.
Same with Mario and Luigi
There was a time when you could play every Zelda in existence with the 3ds Wii u combo
Them: You can't hear images. Me: \*BRT & EoS main theme playing in my head whenever I see the icons.\*
no dx but every other game on there is clutch
How have you downloaded the ds games onto the home screen? I have to use an emulator for ds games on my 3ds
Ndsfowarder
Do you count Red and Blue Rescue Team as the same game?
I would argue they are different, but GBA emulator do exist for 3ds
can I play the old versions for DS on the switch?
Now I'm curioius if it's possible to play the WiiWare PMD Adventure Squad games on a modded 3DS. I'd be surprised if a 3DS could handle it but, maybe!
I really doubt it, but I'm down for surprises
I was going to say u can't play mystery dungeon dx but that's just red rescue team and blue rescue team
For some reason a lot of people are calling out the fact I don't have DX when it's a remake of a game we can play.
How do you have the DS ones as icons on the menu?
not DX
Remake of rescue team, which we do have
not on 3ds, switch only
We have rescue team on ds
i like dx more though, the qol is way better
how do you guys run DS games straight from the homescreen? any tutorials? I’m tired of using the twilight menu lol
Ndsforwarder on uni updater
sorry I’m dumb and stupid. can you explain like I’m 8. I have the universal updater ofc but is ndsforwarder something I need to download separately or is it a setting?

Hey I love yo kai watch
Amazing series
I 100% the blasters medallium and now I'm trying to do psychic specters
I never got anywhere close to 100%ing those :/
It takes lots of patience especially with blasters you have to wait for specific yo kai to be available
I know you can hack your 3DS, but how do you get 2 DS games on your homescreen? I'm always opening twilight menu.
There's NDS forwarder. Pretty handy but the only downside to using it is that you can only have 40 dsiware on your home menu at a time, which includes your DS games that you bring to the home screen with forwarder. Looks like a Nintendo 3DS.
