Not every team sees Castle as a PG. I'm not even convinced WE do, especially right off the bat. I think I'd rather see him take Champagnie's place in the starting lineup than Tre's, and I'm not even a big Tre fan. I could easily have seen Detroit or Charlotte taking him.

Real_Programmer_695

I didn’t think Detroit was a risk, given they need shooting and size at forward, but then they went and took Holland, so clearly I don’t know Detroit as well as I thought I did.

throwstuff165

Detroit was (and is) in a really rough spot and I have no idea what I would've done in that situation. I thought they might try to wrangle something with Memphis centered around Kennard and #9 for #5 and then take Knecht, but maybe they just really love Holland's upside and feel like they need to take big swings.

ManusRightHand

I think Charlotte was the only real risk -- Castle never worked out for Detroit or Portland. He originally refused Charlotte too but eventually relented. I'm not sure you'd wanna use a top 10 pick on a guy that is publicly refusing to play anything but 1 position though.

eanregguht

Tre, Castle, and Sochan in the same lineup as Wemby is borderline malpractice.

throwstuff165

It might be a little ugly (or a lot ugly) at times, but I think it's worth it development-wise. Not like this organization hasn't experimented with basketball malpractice as recently as last season. I'm hoping what he lacks in outside shooting will be made up for by his cutting smarts that Champagnie only showed on rare occasion.

FranksGun

Brian wrights interview after draft he seemed to imply castle was not seen as a pg, just a versatile player. He did say once you get guys in you can see what strengths they show as if to imply he can be a pg if he ends up showing he can, but that their plan for him is not necessarily as a pg.

throwstuff165

Yep. If he ends up as a lead guard, great. If not, next year's class looks to have at least two or three high-level PG prospects right now, and we've got the picks to make moves for whoever we want there if we so desire.

bleh610

Castle is not a good shooter right now. You want him to be a slasher that gets to the rim and also facilitates. You DONT want him camping out on the perimeter chucking 3's most of the time. At least not this early in his career. That just seems like a bad use of his talents. Castle is great in the paint. You want to utilize him near the rim and have him do a lot of attacking which he could do more of as a point guard.

CoyotesSideEyes

I agree with you on the Champagnie thing, but he was not a high-minutes guy, so you're still functionally replacing Malaki/Blake minutes more than you're replacing Champagnie minutes. And I suppose those two kids can't hit a damn shot either, so...maybe the spacing will be equally problematic rather than even worse.

throwstuff165

Fair point, but there's some Osman minutes to account for there, too, because I can't imagine he's coming back.

CoyotesSideEyes

True, but he hit shots.

WEMBYF4N

Charlotte certainly takes Castle at 6

paxusromanus811

Pretty sure he would have been gone. Charlotte reportedly loved him despite the workout thing.

ManusRightHand

Good info, thanks! I read about him changing his mind and doing the Charlotte workout after all but couldn't find anything on how either side felt after. Def makes sense to not have traded out of 4 then.

moonshadow50

I think there is an extremely high chance that Castle would be gone by 8. Charlotte in particular was a perfect fit for him alongside Lamelo and Miller.

Screenscripter82

This, Salaun was definitely not their first choice

Datboy_98

No. He was a fine pick at 4.

CrissCrossAppleSos

I don’t like the Castle pick, but if he was always gonna be the guy, best to not chance it

ManusRightHand

Yeah, makes sense. Just trying to see what others thought as well. Seems like a lot of folks believe Castle is bluffing on his refusal to play anything but PG too.

callmearookie

it worries me a bit too but i think it is a bit of self-defense because he doesn't want to immediately get treat like a forward and teams not caring about his playmaking abilities. still i hope the spurs develop him more as a point forward which is somewhat of an hybrid between is desires and his capabilities

Bonesawisready5

He wouldn’t have been there

Kan169

Charlotte was taking him #6.

789Trillion

I doubt he’d be there.
