OP just wrote the word from memory apparently. "I know there's a C, an O in there somewhere, there's a cath or canth at the end, so just random letters in the middle, done!"
Of for heavens hake. Don’t be koi. I threw that in just for the hal-ib-ut! To make it more sofishticated. But can we all grouper together, to figure this trout, perch ance?
Fun Fact: Not only does this shit outlive any terrestrial animals, it also outlives TREES
WHEN THIS SHIT CAME AROUND, TREES DIDN'T EXIST ON THE TERRAN SURFACE!
Okay but sharks appeared even before them,so why don't people say the same about sharks? Coelacanths also have had thousands of species that all looked different but somehow they get a different treatment because we once thought they were extinct.
Also if you want to take it this far, fucking sponges and jellyfishes are the oldest living animal groups (and ctenophores but they're less known)
Coelacanths were also very different from those that we see today. They haven't diversified their ecological niches as much as sharks, but saying they are living fossils just because of that is purely wrong
Correct spelling be damned, it will be extinct soon enough, either by toxic chemical pollutants, plastic bags or some hero fisherman conquering the depths for a trophy.
They were rediscovered during the "Kon Tiki" voyage? and a few others thought extinct.

It's a turn of phrase. They had been found in fossil records dating back to the Devonian period, and thought to have gone extinct in the Late Cretaceous period, until they were discovered living off the coast of South Africa about 100 years ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_fossil?wprov=sfla1
"A living fossil is an extant taxon that phenotypically resembles related species known only from the fossil record. To be considered a living fossil, the fossil species must be old relative to the time of origin of the extant clade."
Depending on how you try to define it, one might well argue that *we* are living fossils: after all, we are the only surviving species of our genus, the others having gone all extinct at some point or another...
*Coelacanth (pronounced SEE-lə-kanth, apparently)
OP just wrote the word from memory apparently. "I know there's a C, an O in there somewhere, there's a cath or canth at the end, so just random letters in the middle, done!"
Or OP wrote it wrong deliberately. People love to correct errors it's good for engagement.
Well, OP is just a bot. They have 52 posts within the past 24 hours
Animal Crossing fans know this by heart 😂
BLAST FROM THE PAST!
I knew I could count on someone correcting this. Thank you.
Just call it Latimeria bruh
Why is it spelled like that? That pronunciation does NOT match up with that spelling.
Because it went from Greek to Latin to English. Too many languages in the kitchen.
Because obvious misspelling gets more comments and points
Silly kunt?
Needed this pokemon to summon the ancient power
Once you get this and a Wailord you’re all set to go get the Regis
There was an attempt to spell it right
A crappie attempt.
Your spelling isn't a fluke.
Walleye agree with you, OP obviously smelt it incorrectly.
Impressive you replied with not one fish pun, but tuna.
Did I reelly? Oh my cod! I guess I’ve been whalle schooled. Ee’ll try for moray them.
Whales are mammals. You ruined it.
Of for heavens hake. Don’t be koi. I threw that in just for the hal-ib-ut! To make it more sofishticated. But can we all grouper together, to figure this trout, perch ance?
Don't you mean 'carpie'?
A crappie is a kind of fish
I am choosing to believe they spelled it wrong to mock the title because I chuckled assuming it was so.
Another crappy attempt!
r/whoosh
There was an attempt?
Not even. "An attempt" would include, at a minimum, a right click on the misspelled word with red lines under it. Reddit has autocorrect ffs.
Not sure I can agree with you there...
in russian it's a pretty simple word though - "целакант"
Yes, 'e can
Rock water type pokemon
Relicanth

Lol
Relicanth, this is Relicanth.
I've caught so many of these bad boys I've lost count In Animal Crossing of course but it still counts.
Fun Fact: Not only does this shit outlive any terrestrial animals, it also outlives TREES WHEN THIS SHIT CAME AROUND, TREES DIDN'T EXIST ON THE TERRAN SURFACE!
Thank you for this. Such an epic realization. This is why the oceans will always hold my wonder.

Sharks are far more normalised as compared to Coelacanths and Sharks back then were VASTLY different than the sharks we see today
Coelacanths were also very different from those that we see today. They haven't diversified their ecological niches as much as sharks, but saying they are living fossils just because of that is purely wrong
Relicanth!
This has to be what Relicanth is based on
Relicanth
[There are videos of this fish:](https://youtu.be/__Woo6L1bl0?si=iBr3xNhPWSQkHWKw&t=15)
Every animal on Earth is prehistoric.

Pretty sure Kanye got down with one of those
Jesus fuck, just take ten seconds to read before you post. Fucking morons all over reddit
You're an extremely hateful person.
Begone, troll
Oh... FFS.
Hellooo
I don’t remember how you spell this thing’s name, but this is not it.
Coelacanth
80 million years
Coelacanth !
Correct spelling be damned, it will be extinct soon enough, either by toxic chemical pollutants, plastic bags or some hero fisherman conquering the depths for a trophy.
MY FAVORITE FISH !!! 🚨🚨🚨
Beautiful huge fish! Is this related to a grouper?
They were rediscovered during the "Kon Tiki" voyage? and a few others thought extinct. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kon-Tiki\_expedition](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kon-Tiki_expedition)
How can a fossil be living?
It's a turn of phrase. They had been found in fossil records dating back to the Devonian period, and thought to have gone extinct in the Late Cretaceous period, until they were discovered living off the coast of South Africa about 100 years ago
Necromancy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_fossil?wprov=sfla1 "A living fossil is an extant taxon that phenotypically resembles related species known only from the fossil record. To be considered a living fossil, the fossil species must be old relative to the time of origin of the extant clade."
And this is why paleontologists dislike the phrase.
I swear this phrase is a scientific aberration
Depending on how you try to define it, one might well argue that *we* are living fossils: after all, we are the only surviving species of our genus, the others having gone all extinct at some point or another...
Yes but that's also one part of why it's wrong, it's because people only use it on coelacanths or horseshoe crabs
