I got Blake's last time we were there to visit last summer. I spent like $50 on 4 burgers and some seasoned fries. It was pretty terrible and that was probably my last Blake's burger for life. They lost me with breakfast when that fatass burrito started looking like a snack wrap.
I'll crave it and grab it every once in a while but I'm always disappointed. Increasing prices and decreasing quality seems to the norm nowadays unfortunately.
My late nights were spent in the mid-west, and my favorite late night eatery is White Castle. I love that shitty little burger, but it's really not that great. Mostly memories. I feel this is the same with Allsups. It's a shitty little burrito, but it tasted great when needed and is a fond memory.
I remember Blake’s being pretty decent when I lived in NM especially their green chile burgers, but: every. single. time it was basically minimum 10-15 minutes for them to make your meal even if you were the only one there and there were like 5 people in the kitchen. It never made sense to me.
Couple of years I think. Maybe a little more. They made some excuse about supply chain during the pandemic and just never switched back. No idea what the actual reasons are. I still remember the paper they taped to the drive through telling people. Definitely completely changes the burritos. Texture is all wrong.
Fast food burrito joints that are all over. The food's ok, nothing to get excited about. Some people like it but it's not in the running for best anything.
Has Caliche’s expanded to more than the two locations? I haven’t been to LC in a few years. I still think of it as Scoopys. That Valley Dr location was worth the long drive.
They have three: Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and Roswell.
Technically four, if you count the two places in Las Cruces.
Correction: five, as they now have three places in Las Cruces.
Used to work at a custard place in Rio Rancho and nobody seemed to know what it was. One sweet lady came in thinking we sold flan :’) anyway it went out of business. I don’t think the demand is there.
When I moved here 20+ years ago I would have argued Macs Steak in the Rough was the best.
It's sad how they fell so hard. Plus I think they only have one location open these days.
I just laugh when people say this. I have one of the best bacon green chile cheeseburgers of my life from them just last week. You gotta find a good location.
Blake’s isn’t great, Dion’s pizza is alright, their sandwiches are good. But we’re overlooking the hidden gems that are Something Different and especially Caliche’s
Stripes is stupid expensive for what you get.
Is their chicken sandwich good? Yeah.
Is it worth twice the cost of a chicken sandwich from Popeye's? Not a chance.
The one in Farmington is good, though I don't eat there all the time.
Egg shell is a problem, but I think that's down to the cook itself. Least you know it's a real egg and not something from a carton
Both of them, like all things New Mexican... "It used to be better".
Ask any new Mexican about their favorite restaurant and they will eventually say the catchphrase
Blake's is still awesome, IMHO. It does take a while for your food, but at this point, it's almost Ike tradition. If I were to get a lotaburger really fast, I would be suspicious.
As far as Dion's goes, it seems like it is not near as good as it used to be.
I am not going to lie, the one thing I miss about New Mexico after being gone for 3 years is Dion's.
Blake's breakfast burritos are pretty dope too but I can just go to El Paso for those.
I had to check to see if I posted this comment. I agree completely.
I go back to Albuquerque twice a year to see family. We bring a huge ice chest, fill it with three green Chile pizzas from Dions, and Blake's breakfast burritos. I portion them out and freeze them to get my fix in between visits.
My ex works in the home office and I got to know the people there. Good folks, really dedicated. I still get a well-done santorini whenever possible because that shit is bomb. 100% team Dion's.
I honestly think everything at Dion’s BUT their pizza is good
Love their subs and their salads
edit: Oh I can’t forget the absolute best thing there: the ranch
No. It is terrible pizza. The sauce is thin, the dough has no flavor, no crisp, the cheese doesn’t taste like cheese. I guess if you’ve never had pizza outside of New Mexico, maybe a reasonable person might think that, but otherwise absolutely not.
I just moved here from the midwest. Every pizza option in Albuquerque has been disappointing for me. I kinda took it for granted that every town would have at least one great pizza place before moving here.
I have more or less replaced pizza in my diet with New Mexican food, but sometimes I get the craving and I miss both the Chicago deep dish and New York slices available where I moved from.
Best I've had here so far is Old Town Pizza Parlor. It's the only place I've been where I thought it was decent enough to go back.
Giovanni’s is the best pizza I’ve had since I left the northeast 35 years ago. It’s pretty far from me (I live north of Albuquerque) so it’s been a long time since we’ve had it. I wonder if the owner’s Nonni is still alive making her amazing cannolis!
Pizza castle is pretty bomb for a hand tossed. Slice and Dice has great pan pizza.
I think Dions can be descent, but only if ordering a full pie with extra sauce. Ordering by the slice is terrible. Their sandwiches though…bruh. That’s where Dion’s shines.
Legit question from someone who does not live near a Dion’s but always gets their pizza from Dion’s when they go to Albuquerque. What is a better choice for pizza?
Blake’s isn’t as good as it used to be, and I don’t think Dion’s pizza was ever very good. It’s always super greasy and just looks unappealing and oily. Their sandwiches and salads are great, and I don’t think they’re too pricey.
I’ve personally never understood the Dion’s die-hards, though. The pizza is not good.
I see people saying dions is just too expensive but I don't get that at all. Maybe they're complaining bc of ABQ prices but where I'm at a large supreme with a chef salad is under 20. Dions pizza is just okay, the subs and salads are good. Blakes is a hot mess, but then again in this new day and age so is pretty much everywhere else too. My friend raves about Dions and I have to tell her to calm down. Everytime we have a luncheon they want to get that crap and then most of the pizza isn’t eaten and they have throw it away. That crust is so tough it’s like chewing a cardboard box. Last time I had it my jaws were hurting. I threw the rest in the trash.
I wanna stake a claim here for the Santa Fe Grill in all the Allsups down south. I left Cruces 9 years ago and I still dream about those breakfast burritos.
If not Blakes, then Twisters. Dion’s is not that great, but I am happy to die on this hill alone (my partner says that the green chile turkey sub is still dope, but I was spoiled by Village Pizza so I will never cave… maybe it’s due to over exposure to Dion’s as a kid).
ETA: also… what about The Range?
Sorry for responding to this late but I also do not know if it counts—I will count it if you do! If “chain” means more than one of the same restaurant, then I think it does. If chain = a franchise, however, I am not sure. But flying star reminds me of satellite coffee and now I’m REALLY craving a dirty chai.
ETA: The Range in Bernalillo is OG. I rock one of their t-shirts out of state sometimes and get so many compliments that I should probably stop advertising. 😬
You're not misspelling it. But 'burque' holds a ton of negative meaning that people who didn't grow up in NM won't get.
Though I suppose we need to start making exceptions for kids who haven't graduated high school yet, they might be too young.
Bobs has better chile, Blakes have better burgers.
Bobs uses a patty that's like half breakfast sausage. It's good, but not better than the Blakes patty.
I've been to Blake's twice. Each time was a long wait for "fast" food and then food was cold. Once the burger was cold, next time the fries were cold.
Dion's on the other hand, is a delicious oily bastard of a pizza. Nice staff, only takes 20 mins to cook up. Good stuff!
Dion's has always been mediocre pizza. Probably always will be. I'd go to Blakes, even in its current state, a hundred times before Dion's. Thankfully, I have Giovanni's. Sometimes, I'll drive for Village to mix things up. Farina if I'm feeling fancy
Absolute worst breakfast I have ever had in a restaurant. Prefab omelet skins, a few cold to barely warm precooked ingredients and sprinkled with cold cheese. Yuck. Yuck.
Mmmmm….yes definitely Dion’s. I used to love Blake’s, but as others mentioned it definitely has gone down hill. I thought I heard a rumor that a Texas company owns it now? Anyone know?
I grew up in NM from 71 to 89 when I left for the military, I loved Blake's when I grew up but whenever I came back to visit, it was horrible. The lotaburgers shrunk and just have never gone back.

Thr price change is what made me quit going as often. But I'm craving it now.
4th and Candelaria is great. Those prices are like what everything costs now imo, especially when you're picking the most expensive meal on the menu.
Blake's sucks and way overpriced. 64$ for 4 combos for me and my family. Only my meal had bacon and green on it.
I'll crave it and grab it every once in a while but I'm always disappointed. Increasing prices and decreasing quality seems to the norm nowadays unfortunately.
Damn budd. Tell us how you really feel.
I thought it has been Allsups for years.
Late night chimichangas with their taco sauce 🤤
My late nights were spent in the mid-west, and my favorite late night eatery is White Castle. I love that shitty little burger, but it's really not that great. Mostly memories. I feel this is the same with Allsups. It's a shitty little burrito, but it tasted great when needed and is a fond memory.
Allsups burritos are straight trash lol u just like shitting ur pants all night 😂
I tried them for the first time a few months ago and I thought they were awesome. Didn’t poop my pants 🤓
Allusps burritos FTW!
Does it count now that YesWay bought them? Idk, but it’s wild seeing YesWay selling Allsups burritos when I travel.
Yeah. It was weird seeing you can buy them online now. Just not the same. Though they tasted just as good last time I drove back to NM.
Allways
Looks like we need a new mexico circle jerk
We really need a NM circlejerk.
I circled back around for the jerkin’. Keep it coming y’all.
Omg please. It is time.
I remember Blake’s being pretty decent when I lived in NM especially their green chile burgers, but: every. single. time it was basically minimum 10-15 minutes for them to make your meal even if you were the only one there and there were like 5 people in the kitchen. It never made sense to me.
I always just called ahead 10 minutes and ordered, smooth sailing through the line.
This is the way to order at Blake's.
Its not fast food it's made to order. You make me a breakfast burrito in under 10 minutes.
Imagine not being able to do that with a breakfast burrito kitchen at your disposal
I imagine they do some prep.
[удалено]
What? I haven’t heard this before but am interested in knowing more! I couldn’t find anything on google.
Let's see your evidence 👀 my interest is piqued
I will not rest on this disrespect to Mario’s Golden Pride, and Stripes.
Stripes has trash chile
Golden Pride is not as good as it used to be, imo. I feel like their carne adovada is just not the same.
Stripes for certain
Stripes is slowly becoming my fav burrito place
Stripes burritos aren't as good as Blake's in my opinion, but their chicken sandwich absolutely kicks ass!
Stripe's chicken sandwich is absolutely amazing!
Blake’s burritos are straight ass cheeks now. Stripes by a mile.
I feel the same way. Blake’s still has the edge burrito wise imo. Stripes chile isn’t it.
Wanna know a place that really messed me up with how good they are? Jersey jacks inside of UNM has some fantastic breakfast burritos.
Golden Pride for the WIN
Golden pride sucks now. Using instant mashed potatoes for a breakfast burrito? Fuck out of here. Stripes is King
Exactly! What I don’t understand is how do they have hashbrowns available as a dish but somehow can’t put them in their burritos anymore?
When did this happen???
Couple of years I think. Maybe a little more. They made some excuse about supply chain during the pandemic and just never switched back. No idea what the actual reasons are. I still remember the paper they taped to the drive through telling people. Definitely completely changes the burritos. Texture is all wrong.
Wait what?? I’ve never seen this. I just ordered a burrito yesterday
At the one on lomas that's what they do. Maybe they changed it back because of backlash but yeah. Instant mashed potatoes on a burrito
That’s where I ordered. I bet they changed it back because 2 days ago it was hashbrowns. Maybe it was an emergency situation??
I don't live in NM anymore.... WTF is stripes?
Fast food burrito joints that are all over. The food's ok, nothing to get excited about. Some people like it but it's not in the running for best anything.
Oohhhh is it that drive through one that kinda looksike you could get your oil changed there?
Haha…yep
Does Caliche’s count?
Has Caliche’s expanded to more than the two locations? I haven’t been to LC in a few years. I still think of it as Scoopys. That Valley Dr location was worth the long drive.
They have three: Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and Roswell. Technically four, if you count the two places in Las Cruces. Correction: five, as they now have three places in Las Cruces.
And they have a truck making orders in Silver City.
There's no caliches in northern NM? That's surprising, they always get all the cool stuff first
I suspect that the weather is why they haven’t come up north. Frozen custard probably doesn’t sell well in 40 degree or below temps.
Used to work at a custard place in Rio Rancho and nobody seemed to know what it was. One sweet lady came in thinking we sold flan :’) anyway it went out of business. I don’t think the demand is there.
Dions is opening in El Paso too.
Maybe if it was still $15 for a large.
Oh my.
Bobs???
When I moved here 20+ years ago I would have argued Macs Steak in the Rough was the best. It's sad how they fell so hard. Plus I think they only have one location open these days.
They used to be so good, and then the quality just went in the dump serving frozen taquitos smh
I drive by that one location now and then. Sometimes I'm tempted to try them (I've never been), but the place is always empty, so that worries me.
Yes, Blakes is trash now
Welcome to 2010
For reals
Couldn’t agree more. Blake’s used to be King but the prices went up, patties got thin, and wait times are longer than ever.
Yup
It really isn’t that good anymore
I just laugh when people say this. I have one of the best bacon green chile cheeseburgers of my life from them just last week. You gotta find a good location.
Blake’s isn’t great, Dion’s pizza is alright, their sandwiches are good. But we’re overlooking the hidden gems that are Something Different and especially Caliche’s
There’s just as many Something differents in Texas as NM, does it count? If it does, then I’m team Something Different all the way
They started here
Has this 6-day-old bot account shilling for Dion's the best bot? Go Allsup's or go home with this mediocre pizza! Go home bot, you're drunk.
Blake’s sucks new owners changed the beef .Even Bobs is better
Blake's has gone way downhill and Dion's is way too expensive to justify going there. I'm not sure there is a best New Mexican chain anymore.
Blake's and so many others seem to not be just taking a down turn, but outright fleeing from quality like it was the enemy.
Preach on!
Dions with the 20% price increase in the past 5 years is some bullshit
I'm not going to spend 15 dollars on a small sub. Like, get it together.
They only cost $8 in Albuquerque
Sub and sandwich is less than $15. Since they don't deliver and I have to go pick it up Dions in the cheapest takeout I ever get.
Allsups, tbh
I stand corrected. Alsup's is top tier.
Dions got so expensive. The pizza is good if it’s right out of the oven. The ranch is still the greatest of all time
[удалено]
I don't understand the hype around it. I've been a few times and always been disappointed.
Stripes is stupid expensive for what you get. Is their chicken sandwich good? Yeah. Is it worth twice the cost of a chicken sandwich from Popeye's? Not a chance.
Blakes is trash but Dion's is not all that
Fuck yeah it has!
Where are you guys getting your Blakes from? Every time ive eaten there it was fine
The better question is where are you getting the good blakes? The last few times I got a Blake's burrito, there was ALWAYS eggshell.
The one in Farmington is good, though I don't eat there all the time. Egg shell is a problem, but I think that's down to the cook itself. Least you know it's a real egg and not something from a carton
The Blake’s in Alamo has been great after the rebuild. Breakfast burritos the size of your head and fresh tasty burgers.
The size of your head!
Gibson was good, at least a year ago
Los Lunas and Bosque Farms are usually good.
Honestly, the one in Clovis straight up had no employees for a minute. I keep forgetting it’s even open, lol
Had a burger from Los last week and it was not good unfortunately. Bosque is always good though
4th and Candelaria for lunch had not disappointed in the last 4 or 5 times I've been over the past few months
Right? The locations in Santa Fe are always great quality.
Tucson Blake's are fire
Dion’s is shit
You mean you don’t like pizza with only almost a whole spoon full of sauce on the entire thing?
I have a friend who orders “easy sauce” at Dion’s… I’d rather have a Red Baron than that stuff
Easy sauce means cheese bread there 😂
The best Blake’s is on base tbh
Both of them, like all things New Mexican... "It used to be better". Ask any new Mexican about their favorite restaurant and they will eventually say the catchphrase
Teriyaki chicken bowl. For those of you who live in new mexico, please have appreciation for how lucky you are to have this local chain.
That bowl costs 18 fucking dollars now, gtfo
The fuck?
The only Blake’s I’ll eat at in espanola. I’m way to northern nm to fish. Abq Blake’s is trash. Got sold to a diff family. Never been the same
Blake's is still awesome, IMHO. It does take a while for your food, but at this point, it's almost Ike tradition. If I were to get a lotaburger really fast, I would be suspicious. As far as Dion's goes, it seems like it is not near as good as it used to be.

Naw fuck that Laguna burger
What’s the minimum number to count as a chain?
Six according to their website
I honestly think everything at Dion’s BUT their pizza is good Love their subs and their salads edit: Oh I can’t forget the absolute best thing there: the ranch
Blake’s is nasty Dion’s is soooo good
No 🌯
NO. I hate Dion's, it's overpriced shit.
Giovanni’s is the best pizza I’ve had since I left the northeast 35 years ago. It’s pretty far from me (I live north of Albuquerque) so it’s been a long time since we’ve had it. I wonder if the owner’s Nonni is still alive making her amazing cannolis!

Dion's is caca
Their sandwiches are alright
Legit question from someone who does not live near a Dion’s but always gets their pizza from Dion’s when they go to Albuquerque. What is a better choice for pizza?
Personally, Saggios near frontier is #1 for me
Giovanni’s is best pizza in Albuquerque. On San Pedro
Anywhere else.
Thanks! So helpful!
I like both and I also have the most unrefined pallet of anyone on the planet.
Naw!!
Sacrilege. Hersey.
Dion's makes amazing pizza.
Last pizza I got from there tasted like dried out cardboard.
No
Does dions still have sketchy managers?
Well thats Bleak.
Padillas, barelas, Cervantes
110%
The Blake’s in Edgewood is mediocre at best.
Why did Pizza 9 lose the local pizza wars?
Um… Blake’s was alway not that great :/
Is Mac’s Steak in the Rough still a thing? I haven’t been back to abq in several decades
I moved away 2 years ago and I still crave a turkey Swiss with Greek dressing. I fucking love dions
You bite your tongue
Terrible pizza
Blakes burritos are trash, they put too much potatoes not enough meat. And Dion’s over rated. Amadeos and Mario’s have better pizza.
A long time ago yeah
I see people saying dions is just too expensive but I don't get that at all. Maybe they're complaining bc of ABQ prices but where I'm at a large supreme with a chef salad is under 20. You can't compare this years prices to those of years ago that just doesn't make sense. Compared to other food prices today, dions wins in the dollar per pound of food ratio
No never
Dions pizza is just okay, the subs and salads are good.
Yes because Blake’s burritos are small now
I would go to Dion’s over Blake’s any day of the week. But that is like getting kicked in the face vs kicked in the balls. Neither is great.
Does the Range qualify as a chain? I love the one in Bernalillo. I miss the Flying Star that was there too.
I’ll hit both when in ABQ next week
Golden Pride for a breakfast burrito.
Omg hands down the best breakfast burritos, and their service is always fast. My wife and I make sure to stop by there anytime we’re back in Burque.
Those dusty flour tortillas 😩
I like how you can tell folks who aren't NM natives when they say 'Burque'. It's like when they misspell chile.
I lived in Albuquerque for 20 years from the age of 10, it’s Burque. Or am I misreading your comment.
You're not misspelling it. But 'burque' holds a ton of negative meaning that people who didn't grow up in NM won't get. Though I suppose we need to start making exceptions for kids who haven't graduated high school yet, they might be too young.
Interesting, you mind explaining? I’ve never heard that, my understanding was it’s from the original spelling of the city or from Burqueño.
I wouldn't (especially Blake's - do Bob's instead for something similar).
I love Bob’s. The breakfast burritos and hot dogs are great. They definitely don’t short you on Chile.
Bobs has better chile, Blakes have better burgers. Bobs uses a patty that's like half breakfast sausage. It's good, but not better than the Blakes patty.
Always was
Even if Dion's isn't Blake's sure as shit ain't no more. My second candidate would be Golden Pride for their green chili stew alone.
Dion’s Baybeeeee!!!
Dions has the worst quality control. Some times they can make a decent pizza and sometimes it’s soup… bottom tier pizza
I've been to Blake's twice. Each time was a long wait for "fast" food and then food was cold. Once the burger was cold, next time the fries were cold. Dion's on the other hand, is a delicious oily bastard of a pizza. Nice staff, only takes 20 mins to cook up. Good stuff!
I’ll mix things up. Stripes has the best breakfast burritos hands down!
I love Dion’s but it is a tie with Blake’s.
Dion's has always been mediocre pizza. Probably always will be. I'd go to Blakes, even in its current state, a hundred times before Dion's. Thankfully, I have Giovanni's. Sometimes, I'll drive for Village to mix things up. Farina if I'm feeling fancy
I protest Dion's identifying as a pizza joint. Their pizza is pretty awful imo
Dion's trash tier dominos like pizza with 100% more sexual harassment.
Dions pizza is a soggy mess.
I feel like Weck's deserves a mention here. Awesome breakfast.
Absolute worst breakfast I have ever had in a restaurant. Prefab omelet skins, a few cold to barely warm precooked ingredients and sprinkled with cold cheese. Yuck. Yuck.
Same here, I will not set foot in Weck's ever again.
Mmmmm….yes definitely Dion’s. I used to love Blake’s, but as others mentioned it definitely has gone down hill. I thought I heard a rumor that a Texas company owns it now? Anyone know?
No Dion’s is ass anyone who disagrees can fight me
The problem with Dions is how inconsistent it is. Half the time the pizza is either burnt or undercooked, and nearly always cut terribly.
No
I grew up in NM from 71 to 89 when I left for the military, I loved Blake's when I grew up but whenever I came back to visit, it was horrible. The lotaburgers shrunk and just have never gone back.
Weck’s is number 1 now.
