Bass solo in Been a Son
Intro drum fill in SLTS (simple but absolutely iconic)
Krist's 'singing' on Territorial Pissings
Bonus: whatever the fuck Dave and Krist were doing during the "More Than a Feeling" intro from Reading 1992
Wait, didn’t Kurt actually write the bass riff? It’s been a while but I thought there was a recording from montage of heck with Kurt doing it (or rather as close an approximation as he was able) before Krist came in and refined it.
I’m way outta date on my Nirvana history so I may well be talking outta my butt, but I swear I remember something “bass” related from Kurt on MoH.
The bass just follows the guitar aside from a few flourishes in the choruses, and the bass solo sounds to me like Krist just made it up on the spot. I reckon you must be thinking of a different song
I think you’re right. What I saw a minute ago after I checked was a quick, screen caption that said “bass solo” during Kurt’s part, so I think that’s what I was confusing.
Appreciate the correction. You’d think I’d be able to keep all this straight considering how much time I spent over the years obsessing about it.
kurt did record himself playing a small section of bass on the tail end of MoH been a son recording but not the actual solo. so you aren’t necessarily wrong, just confused as to which part he was playing on bass
Just on the In Bloom bits in OP, let’s remember Chad Channing did that originally. In Bloom on Nevermind was practically a cover of an old Nirvana song.
The bass riffs are the most memorable part of most of their songs for me. I love Krist's bass tone so much, especially on Nevermind. It's so bouncy and groovy
That second in On a plain where it's only the bass after the bridge. It's just a second but I felt in love with it the first time I listened to the song.
Mentioned by OP but the bass in Lithium before the final verse. Literally remember the first time I heard that song that was the point where I got the chills. Been a massive fan ever since that day.
I love the basslines in tracks like Dive, About a Girl, Sliver, etc.
I can’t help but always think that Krist Novoselic was truly an unsung hero in Nirvana.
Nirvana was Kurt’s band,He wrote all the songs. So even though he wasn’t playing all the parts he more often then not told them what to play. Krist probably had a lot more freedom. But I know Kurt was anal about the drumming wouldn’t be surprised if he told Dave what to play for every part
I'm actually really curious about that specific point and wish I could find more info on it.
Did Kurt come up with any of their iconic drumming parts or creatively was it all Dave?
Yea he had a say in all the drum parts.
In bloom that op mentioned was already made before Dave joined the band., With Chad on drums. And the drums were the same pretty much before and after Dave played it on nevermind
Dave’s harmonies on All Apologies and Pennyroyal tea
The amount of power brought by Pat Smear in the shows
Cello on Something In The Way
Double bass in Scoff
Bass on Hairspray Queen (that track belongs to a 2am MTV cartoon opening theme )
Accordion on Jesus don't want me for a Sunbeam.
And not sure if this counts but the guitar parts on Lake of Fire and Oh Me (can't remember which Kirkwood this is).
Drum track in Scentless Apprentice
Basically all of it save for the descending riff & the verse isn’t it? “Bone-headed” indeed!
it was quite a dickish compliment wasn't it haha
Heard this sampled on many hip hop tracks which is a big compliment.
Watching Dave pounding drums at live and loud is amazing
Bass in Lounge Act and the Cello in Something in The Way and Dumb
Came here for bass in Lounge Act
Bassline in lounge act
Bass solo in Been a Son Intro drum fill in SLTS (simple but absolutely iconic) Krist's 'singing' on Territorial Pissings Bonus: whatever the fuck Dave and Krist were doing during the "More Than a Feeling" intro from Reading 1992

Gotcha. Appreciate the clarification!
No your not imagining it. He plays some home version of been a son and then at the end he spliced in "bass part" and does a bar of it
Guitar and vocals in marigold
not the lengthy stool drag tho
Just on the In Bloom bits in OP, let’s remember Chad Channing did that originally. In Bloom on Nevermind was practically a cover of an old Nirvana song.
Fair point. However it's Dave's distinct punch I am hearing in my head when I think of the song.
Fleas trumpet solo was sick
Thanks for reminding me of this 🤣
the bass in love buzz will forever be stuck in my head
Not one of my favorite songs; but absolutely epic playing from Krist there.
The three drum stick clicks at the beginning of 'Serve the Servants'
*click click click BYYAAANNNGNGGGG*
Yeah dude, best way to start a 'vana album
The Cello, bass in lounge act and the bass in d7, drums in sliver
The bass riffs are the most memorable part of most of their songs for me. I love Krist's bass tone so much, especially on Nevermind. It's so bouncy and groovy
The bass in Lounge act
Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and try and love one another, right now
Drums in floyd the barber
That second in On a plain where it's only the bass after the bridge. It's just a second but I felt in love with it the first time I listened to the song.
The entire bass part of On A Plain should be mentioned I think
Yes. Of course.
Drums in beginning of territorial pissings
The Keyboard solo in In-A-Gada-Da-Vida
Drum n bass in stay away
Dave's appalling backing vocals at the North Shore Surf Club show! Also Krist's vocals on their Do You Love Me? cover. Awful singing tickles me.
Mentioned by OP but the bass in Lithium before the final verse. Literally remember the first time I heard that song that was the point where I got the chills. Been a massive fan ever since that day.

Bass line in Lounge Act serves as the basis for the entire song
Marigold
Bass in blew
Literally every Novoselic bass line. Dude could groove
The guitars in 'Alive'
Drums in Breed, vocals in Marigold
Drums in lithium, an aneurysm. Bass in been a son, in hairspray queen, Dive, and dare I say Lovebuzz Drums in in bloom,

Kurt was WHAT about the drimming?,
Anal means like a perfectionist. High attention to detail
Maybe he was also very anal, since he wrote the lyrics to Moist Vagina
Dave’s harmonies on All Apologies and Pennyroyal tea The amount of power brought by Pat Smear in the shows Cello on Something In The Way Double bass in Scoff Bass on Hairspray Queen (that track belongs to a 2am MTV cartoon opening theme )
Marigold itself is a fantastic song with no Kurt involvement (to my knowledge)
stool drag
Accordion on Jesus don't want me for a Sunbeam. And not sure if this counts but the guitar parts on Lake of Fire and Oh Me (can't remember which Kirkwood this is).
Smells? the flam-intro. Propably the most air drummed song ever XD Also scentless apprentice for dave and lounge act for krist :)) imo
All Apologies, his swan song to his family, Kera Schaley – cello. He also said he didn't have a gun. Lies. Lies, Kurt!
It’s a cover but Krist’s baseline in Love Buzz. Kurt is just making noise over that.
Definitely the bass in Lounge Act
Bassline in Lounge Act
The drums in sifting
The bass in raunchola
Bass intro in Lounge Act.
I like the simplicity of the bass line in Polly
Rape Me Bass
The drums in breed
The fuzzy bass on Breed.
