How to make the best burger:
[7 paragraph intro about my dead grandma]
You want slightly fatter ground beef than lean. It needs to juice but not much.
Bun has to be medium soft. If you can hold it firmly in your hands and take a clean bite, you're golden.
Mix your beef with a mixture of paprika and hot paprika (depending on how spicy you want it), ground pepper, BBQ spices, just a little bit of ketchup and onion juice (about half a spoon per patty.
If you like your burger well done, smash that sucker 'till it's paper thin. If you like it medium, make a nice patty.
Fry the sucker on a hot pan. DO NOT PRESS IT. When one side is finished, flip it over, add a little bit of water to an empty spot on the pan and put a lid on it. That's right, STEAMED HAM!
Char those buns if you like it that way and add all your favorite toppings.
BAM! best burger in the world!
On a road trip, passing through a small town and there is a food shack by the gas station. I'm hungry and adventurous so I stop.
First thing, it looks clean. Second, one guy manning the thing. He's bald, buff, tatted, and looks like he just got out of prison.
"What do you want" very rudely. I ask for a burger, he says "I'll make you a bomb ass fucking burger, $5.00". The burgers on the menu are $3.00, but whatever. I'm game.
Sure enough it was a bomb ass fucking burger. Off-menu but that guy knew his burgers.
I went back a month later and it was closed. Nobody at the gas station knew anything about it.
I don't remember the name of the location but I remember it was a burger made from buffalo meat. Saying that it was amazing would be an understatement.
Weirdly enough, it was a Wendy’s double cheeseburger. I was eating it in the passenger seat of my sister’s car. It was so hot and fresh and delicious. Then she rear-ended someone, and in my shock I squeezed the burger so hard that everything in it went flying out onto the dashboard and floor.
That was close to 20 years ago now. I still mourn that burger sometimes.
I still say, when done properly, a Wendy’s double is as good a burger as you can get anywhere. Some locations overcook them which is odd because I thought fast food was all about reliable uniform product.
Burgers that I would make at home when I was a kid. Maybe the meat was different, maybe my taste buds weren’t destroyed yet. But I’ve been looking for something to top that for years.
I once had a grumpy quad from grumpy whites. It was 4 patties and covered in cheese and the roll was drenched in butter the fried on the griddle. Was in a meat coma afterwards
Right after moving in for college. Tired, hungry, and sweaty. The Home Depot near the apartment had a Fuddrucker’s inside. Genius move in hindsight. After the day of moving stuff, figuring out where it all goes, and everything that comes with moving, we needed a few things from Home Depot. Well, the whiff of frying meat was too much.
I went all out with that burger. The biggest one, mushrooms, bacon, and cheese. By far the best damn burger I ever had, and that was over 20 years ago.
The house burger at some restaurant on a ski-slope in Austria. We were hungry, just came down some really nice slopes, stopped to eat. The view was gorgeous and that burger was amazing. had the best god damn burgersauce I’ve ever had. They made that sauce themselves, called it their own burger sauce, so sad I never figured out what it was based on. Damn that was good sauce, and a damn good burger. Damn.
I’m sure this’ll piss some people off, but the best burger I’ve had in recent memory was actually at an all-vegan place in Amsterdam. I can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but it was just phenomenal. It was like a double stacked smash burger with loads of cheese and bacon, but all vegan. I’m a meat eater, definitely no vegan, but I went with a friend on her recommendation and I was blown away.
I had also been frequenting the coffee shops, so I guess we should take that into consideration. But still. Was a damn good burger 🤷♀️
I like to treat myself to a McDouble every so often. I've never had a homemade burger that I liked and the ones from restaurants are always so thick, tall, and messy. The McDouble is the perfect size for me and I love the minced onion flavor. It's the only fastfood burger that I enjoy, really the only burger I enjoy.
It really is! It adds such a deep layer of flavor that just doesn't come from regular onion. It's surprising how rare it is of a topping. I guess it's just easier to slice onions.
it's so much more than "just a burger." I mean...that first bite ”oh, what heaven that first bite is. The bun, like a sesame freckled breast of an angel, resting gently on the ketchup and mustard below, flavors mingling in a seductive pas de deux. And then...a pickle! The most playful little pickle! Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a...a patty of ground beef so exquisite, swirling in your mouth, breaking apart, and combining again in a fugue of sweets and savor so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, OP. This is God, speaking to us in food.
Burger from Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX. There's also a place called Smitty's Garage Burgers & Beers that has really good burgers, I ate at the one in Rogers, AR.
It's environment and moment specific, but the first time I went to a MLB game in a great big beautiful ball park on a summer evening and saw my first Shake Shack and got a cheeseburger, it was the best burger ever.
A cheap one with basic generic white bun and ketchup bought at a random small town burger stand. We had just finished a crazy long hike on a crazy hot day and I don’t remember what it tasted like but it was the best thing ever. Only downside is that their only cold drink was Pepsi so we had to drink warm water with it - we were starving and covered in dust and sweat but not THAT desperate.
Back about 20 years ago, the [Drayton Court Hotel](https://www.draytoncourtlondon.co.uk/) (a historically interesting pub, as Ho Chi Minh used to work there when he lived in London) used to make Stilton and mushroom burgers. Just four ingredients really:
- a standard burger bun,
- a big, thick beef patty,
- sliced fried mushrooms, and
- slices of Stilton cheese, slightly melted by their proximity to the other ingredients.
It was well executed, but it's a combination of flavours you don't see especially often. I make it at home from time to time.
Best restaurant burger is Kuma's plaque bringer.
Best I ever had was a pro chef friend made me dry aged bacon (prosciutto cured like gypsies bacon) double cheese burger for my birthday. The cheese was white stilton gold and even the salt and pepper was special. It was made as kind of a joke, but it was on a different level. Food industry people rock.
The smash burgers I make in my own back yard are hard to top.
Aside from that I went to a place in London ~10 years ago called GBK (gourmet burger kitchen?) and it was pretty nice. It felt like a Subway for Burgers and the price was reasonable.
$3.95 cheeseburger at Sonny's Place in Galveston, Tx.

I'd had a really shit day and felt like I just wanted to pull my hair out and let my last string of sanity snap. There was teacher that hated me and used to invent things that I'd done to get me punished for no reason.
I walked out of school in the middle of the day and called my Dad. He picked me up and we drove to Burger King... That Double Bacon Cheese XXL was THE greatest burger I've ever had.
I've gone quite a few times since and they've never tasted that good since 😅- The stars aligned
39 Rue de Jean in Savannah, Ga, which appears to be closed now.
The original restaurant is in Charleston, SC, and I had one of the best meals in my life there.
Had a conference in Savannah and saw they had opened a second one next to our hotel. Our group went, and they had a special burger on the menu. Apparently the city's restaurants had a hamburger competition and this was their entry.
A white cheese, reduced onions, an aioli, toasted brioche bun and Wagyu beef with just enough crust on it. It was umami heaven.
Crusade Burger Bar in Yorkville Illinois
It’s about an hour and a half away from me and worth the drive every time.
The first time was a near religious experience, I was almost in tears it was so good.
It was the one that I got from a small shop in old town rhodes, right by the bus terminal near the main entrance to the ruins/castle.
I would go back there any day of the week!
Burgers Priest in Toronto.
The 'Vatican': double burger with deep fried mushroom cap filled with cheese, between two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns. Messy, decadent and unforgettable
Honestly, the one my ex-girlfriend and me made together. Those were amazing! Best thing I’ve ever eaten.
Second place is a Wagyu-Burger with truffles I once had.
Third would be one I had at a street food festival in London where the winner of a Burger championship was selling his prized Burger.
It’s the middle of summer, long day on the water, you get back to the campsite and fire up the grill. It doesn’t matter what blend of meat, what toppings, what bun - that is the best burger I’ve ever had.
The one I made, inspired by the BBQ Pit Boys smoked whiskey cheeseburger video!
I got a giant cake ring and formed a couple of over 1 lb. burger patties for me and my family(I was 21 and home for the weekend). I made sure to chop up onions to put in the meat, gave it a healthy quantity of salt and pepper, poured 1 shot of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked into it, put some BBQ sauce on the top along with a small amount of brown sugar, let it marinate for some time, and then put it on the grill. I then grilled up giant slices of applewood bacon, giant portabella mushrooms, put out american and cheddar cheese slices, prepared lettuce, grilled up an onion, and near the end of the grilling session put the gigantic buns on the grill to toast the bottoms of them and slightly firm them up. Then, I put it all together. I added mayo on the burger buns, and drove a wooden stake through the center to have it stay put. 13/10 burger!
Edit: and you best believe I had a fat tire beer and a cigar with me the whole time!
Shake Shack has some good ones. There was this dinner where I grew up in Brooklyn. It was called George's on 57th Street and 5th Avenue. I loved their burgers. Outside of that, I have been honing my burger making skills for the past 2 years. I'm there yet, but I'm getting close.
Craigie on Main in Cambridge, MA makes a kobe burger with crazy high quality Kobe beef. You can order it rare and taste every fat and protein in the meat. No toppings or condiments necessary. Just a really high quality patty on a brioche bun.
There's a cafe my family use to go to when on holiday when I was a kid. They had the nicest burgers - no need for relish or anything, just perfectly cooked with lightly crisped buns.
We went there every couple of years when I was a kid, and they were always perfect. The last time I went is close to 20 years ago, and they were every bit as good as I remember.
I've thought about going back since. It's still there, but it's a 12 hour trip each way. It's *almost* worth it!
One I had in Florida years ago at a now closed burger bistro.
It was called the Fat Elvis.
It had bacon, banana, peanut butter and honey.
It was gooey and messy and absolutely delicious
For me it was at this steakhouse in Germany called Block House. Funny enough, it was in Hamburg (go figure, lol). Happened by sheer chance as it was the only place open near my hotel that evening. Walked over and ordered a burger expecting nothing special. Turned out to be one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. If anybody has eaten there or is familiar with this restaurant, please chime in.
It was from a roadside restaurant in West Texas. The beef was super fresh (lots of cattle ranches in the area). They made their own burger buns from scratch on the premises every day. Unbelievably good. Can't remember the name of the place.
Technical answer? A burger I had at GR Burgr in Vegas. It was a bison burger with duck bacon and egg on brioche. Simply divine.
Actual answer? Probably some late night trash burger when I was super high and hungry back in my college days.
It's was years ago so I can't remember the name of the place, but a little hole in the wall in Chicago. Line out the door, cash only, just a few seats inside along the wall. They used a cheddar cheese spread instead of slices. My homemade burgers have been 10x better after trying to copy theirs!
I made burgers for my son's birthday in 2018. Had a big party and mixed up a huge batch of meat for making Patty's they ended up being the best burgers I ever had. I don't even know what I did to make them so good. I made them how I normally would except a huge batch. It could have been because I cooked alot of them on the BBQ at the same time, all the extra smoke might have infused or something. Other then them there used to be a food truck nearby that made really good burgs. It's gone now tho.
There’s this place where I live called “Sandwiches” best fucking burgers and fries I’ve ever had. Burgers were seasoned like hell, they let me put pepper jack cheese and it was greasy but I can get over it, and the fries were seasoned to perfection.
The Office Burger at Father’s Office is a close contender for me. However, I once stopped in a small mountain town in far Northern California (somewhere near the Russian River), which had an unassuming diner attached to a gas station. On a whim I ordered their patty melt and oh my fucking god. That was the best tasting beef I’ve ever had. The whole thing was a marvel. Everything was locally sourced from farms a little under 4 miles away.
Thank you. I haven’t gone in years and they’re overpriced, but if that’s taken out of the equation they constantly make one of the best burgers.
That said, I’d still pick Shake Shack or Beck’s Prime.
No complaints but not the best for me by far.
Except that one time in a rail station in Paris. Train was delayed and we were starving. Checked the food options at the station and lo and behold there was a Five Guys there. That burger tasted amazing for some reason.
In Japan, I experienced the "Wagyu Cheeseburger" at a small, hidden gem in Tokyo. This burger was a revelation: featuring a perfectly grilled Wagyu beef patty, melted cheese oozing over each bite, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, all nestled in a soft, buttery brioche bun. The combination of flavors was exceptional, leaving an indelible impression of culinary excellence.
I was in Lisbon and ate at a random Mediterranean food place with kebabs and whatnot. I decided on the burger since I haven't had one my whole trip yet.
Maybe it was the length of time since my last one or I was just extra hungry, but that burger was absolutely perfect. Tasty sauce and juicy patty and just the perfect amount/selection of toppings. The fries were also great. Whenever I go back I hope that place is still open. I know exactly where it is and I'll head right there after I offload my luggage.

I came here to say buffalo meat too. It's richer, more "umami" flavor.
I've never had buffalo meat in my whole life, this burger was the first. Is yummy!
Fuddruckers have bison burgers.
Well, I think is a thing on the US cuz I've never seen anywhere in the UK.

Beyond Meat with tofu Aioli and a side of tears… yum
Aioli is vegan...
A lot a aioli (especially western (good ol’ American, amiright?) contains eggs and is pretty much glorified mayo
Then don't buy that kind? Or make it yourself 🤷♂️
… they’re specifying that they bought a specifically vegan type of aioli, so what is your point?
They're complaining that their vegan aoli is bad when real aioli is both vegan and good, that's all
Who is complaining?
Op with their tofu aoli and a side of tears I'd imagine

The greasy cheeseburgers we'd get as kids at the snack shack at the turn at Wolferts Roost Country Club, in Albany, NY.
Best one I ever had was the first time I had a dippy egg on a burger. GAME changer. I do it all the time now. When I remember to....
I made the “Shake Your Honeymaker” burger from the Bob’s Burgers cookbook, and it was the best damn burger I ever had.
Oh, it was this burger joint that piled on so much bacon and cheese that I needed a nap afterward!
FERGBURGER in new zealand hands down...
Binks in Montmarte, Paris. Incredible smashburger that I’ll be chasing for the rest of my life.
Some tiny cafe in Compiegne, France after biking there from Paris all day
from a hole in the wall place in Dawsonville ga. I dont remember the name of the place but over a decade later i remember that burger.
I really like Burgers Never Say Die in Los Angeles. Such a simple and perfectly delicious burger
Pub in Amsterdam, med rare. Mind blown.
The Lemmy Burger, from Annie's Burger Shack, Nottingham, England. Hands down, the best burger I ever had.
It was at Hawthorn, by chef Juilan Slowik. It's off menu, but so good
An edible one
The parks and recreation TV show burger: hamburger + bun.

My son and I would make burgers with flavors mimicking world cuisines. The best was the Vietnamese pho burger.
Five guys is pretty decent
I don't like them anymore. They used to be good, but over priced burgers now
They're more a treat than fast food these days. There are cheaper restaurants now!
While good they are pricey. If you take out the cost factor they’re probably top rank in chain burgers.
OK we can agree to disagree
My wife’s that we grill at home
Culver’s makes the best burgers! Using Wisconsin beef and cheese. The bacon cheeseburger is THE BOMB!
Mine.
A smoked cheese burger from a random food truck I forgot the name of unfortunately
The In n’ Out Burger on Camrose
I was in Lisbon and ate at a random Mediterranean food place with kebabs and whatnot. I decided on the burger since I haven't had one my whole trip yet. Maybe it was the length of time since my last one or I was just extra hungry, but that burger was absolutely perfect. Tasty sauce and juicy patty and just the perfect amount/selection of toppings. The fries were also great. Whenever I go back I hope that place is still open. I know exactly where it is and I'll head right there after I offload my luggage.

No lie, the 2 best burgers I've eaten have been vegan ones.
