Chiang Kai Shek has more similarity with the current Chinese government that they have to DPP-ruled Taiwan tbf

[deleted]

Yeah I don't think a KMT mainland would be paradise exactly (and by that I mean it would be dictatorial at least until Chiang dies)

UnusualAnt2861

Eh probably would’ve went the same way ruling Taiwan did, while initial authoritarian, it’ll still have heavy western influence to prevent some of the God awful communist plans and eventually after a few decades go democratic.

[deleted]

In exchange the frankly necessary land reform (even if the killing wasnt necessary) the communists did would also mean a much poorer China today because the conditions were feudal in some places. I'm very careful with glorifying the KMT even though the CCP was and is horrendous.

Anomynous_user_2nd

The KMT also committed to land reform on Taiwan almost immediately after the Civil War. Instating rent caps, selling public land, and land redistribution. Though it’s hard to say whether they still would’ve undergone such a comprehensive program if they still retained control of the mainland. What is certain is that it would not have been as disastrous as the CCPs

Carnir

It would end up like modern Russia, a pseudo-democratic mafia state. The only reason Taiwan is as progressive as it is is because it needs the US support.

Mountbatten-Ottawa

Yes, imagine East Asians saying all the good words for gays just because they are tolerant but not because they want to have some love from pro LGBT Federalist government. It can never be so, eh

InsertNounHere88

you do realize the 党国 system was invented by the KMT in the 20s then co-opted by the CCP afterward, right? if they won the Chinese Civil War they'd look very similar to the current CCP besides, they didn't have much to do with the legalization of same-sex marriage, they opposed it while the DPP supported it

SJshield616

No it wouldn't have. It'd be functionally no different than CCP China. Taiwan went democratic because the KMT colonizers lost their grip on the Taiwanese population and choice was either democracy or popular revolution. A KMT China would've had an empire's worth of resources and manpower to call upon to suppress the Tibetans, Mongolians, and other minorities within their borders to maintain a one-party dictatorship by committee, just like the CCP in our timeline except without avoidable mistakes like the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.

yegguy47

The KMT's rule over Taiwan was substantially different to its experience on the mainland, largely because it lost the war. Turns out that being stuck on an island with the threat of annihilation does wonders for rearranging your priorities.

Icey210496

Ma was called a bumbler by the economist and he's still a worthless bumbling idiot to this day. Nothing too surprising.

yegguy47

To be fair... if the Economist calls you a bumbler, that probably means you've done something right. (Keep in mind, the publication celebrated Liz Truss' accession to PM)

SJshield616

Chiang Kai-Shek would be applauding that sniveling dipshit if he were alive today. They'd rather see Taiwan in Chinese communist chains than independent and free.

Hunor_Deak

>If when I die, I am still a dictator, I will certainly go down into the oblivion of all dictators. If, on the other hand, I succeed in establishing a truly stable foundation for a democratic government, I will live forever in every home in China. Didn't he write this while on Taiwan?

SJshield616

>I will live forever in every home in China. At the end of the day, he's a Chinese nationalist, not a Taiwanese nationalist.

fletch262

… did he consider Taiwan China?

SJshield616

Yeah. Everyone who mattered in geopolitics did while he was alive.

I know nothing about the KMT, but it seems like at least their dictator person did a pretty good transition, idk if they would have if they held mainland.

KABOOMBYTCH

Contrary to popular beliefs in “the west”. Chiang Kai Shek and Sun Yat Sen would approve of the CCP of “today” for emphasis. They would think the Taiwanese are delulu for siding with the imperialist. Now another aspect no one talk about is growing segment younger (zoomers) ppls in Taiwan are beginning to favour politicians taking a favourable diplomatic approach to China.

mansotired

i don't think Taiwan politics care much for Ma Ying-jeou anyway? he's already retired and doesn't hold any power nowadays the equivalent of Jimmy Carter in the 1990s

SaberSabre

Thankfully reunification is a mainly boomer opinion.

mansotired

yeah i think the KMT need to redefine themselves otherwise it may even lose out to TPP in the future

Tokidoki_Haru

Honestly, people like this need to be expunged from the KMT anyway. No part of China is left standing up for democracy, and the pan-Greens want out. Good riddance to that guy. 🇹🇼 Also the Global Times can eat shit.

ExcitableSarcasm

Not liking Japanese fascism is bad guys!!! Least weeaboo NCD poster. Not everything is about you sweatie :)

Hunor_Deak

Not everyone who is anti CCP is pro-Imperial Japan, you idiot.

ElSapio

I think you’re missing the point. He’s encouraging feelings of unity by referencing a time when China fought together.

ulfhedinnnnn

and encouraging the fellings of unity is bad because?

sujeitocma

Because unity now is with the CCP

ElSapio

Because unity with the CCP is bad.

KABOOMBYTCH

Unlike weirdos in HK & Taiwan these days who uses the nanking massacre to troll little pinkies, I’ve been very adamant against JLA apologia ever since I was a brat.
