The portal April fools update from 2021 I think was unreasonably cool. Still go back to it sometimes

Gay_As_Hell_Robot

Which one was that? I love the infinity one. I play from time to time still. It's fun to try and beat the game only going through the weird dimensions.

JTBSpartan

Ironically, it's called 20w14∞

Regunes

That one was so great, one of the first dimension i went through I dubbed "Apocalypse mushroom kingdom" , as it was litteraly mushrooms in a red atmosphere with ominous ships in orbit

doubledirkdolo

that sounds like a helldivers map

Regunes

Unfortunately, since it was a burning barren wasteland, there wasn't much to "spread liberty".

Corruptedplayer

the difference between the april fools snapshot and the full update features is that every new feature seem to need to go through corporate hell before they can be implemented.

drillgorg

The April fools stuff isn't going to end up as plushies at Target.

TheMinecraftTrident

poisonous potato plushie.......

Kindly-Ad-5071

Are you sure??? I'd buy it but miss me with another worthless axolotl plush

[deleted]

It's gotta be wild to have started with a spaghetti code web game that wasn't designed to live for more than a couple of years, and end up 15 years later with a multi-billion dollar Microsoft-owned industry where every new detail is implemented in two code bases and has to go through marketing & PR hell just to see the light of day. If they add an animal suddenly they have to think about PETA; they have to contact Target and LEGO; they have to worry about accidentally breaking game balance for early game players and late game players; and they have to implement it twice. I love this game, but what a damn nightmare.

TheRedGerund

Mo money mo problems

MarineMelonArt

Thats actually a good point. Its entirely possible the team CANT add more outrageous things. Minecraft has a pretty simple aesthetic, is now a gaming GIANT, and notice how WEIRD ammounts of depth can be found in using regular blocks in farms and redstone mechanics. Why on earth can the command block system do so much when 90% of players wont use them? They seem to know we want deep stuff, but cant add anything thatd change the core too much, unless WE are the ones to change that core ourselves.

UltimateInferno

That's really the case. Microsoft is terrified of killing their golden goose that ever since C&C they've really reigned in the extent of changes that could be done.

Reddit-User-3000

I think that as long as the game continues to be bought and played and the development is funded, extremely slow and cautious updates over time is probably the best way to ensure it stays good. The game is already so developed. There’s already two versions with different mechanics, and multiplayer is entirely player-base driven. I wonder if it will still be updated in 70 years

danegraphics

It's more than that. Not only does Mojang want to avoid turning Minecraft into a different game, not only do they have to make sure all features work on all release versions including mobile, Mojang also wants to be incredibly careful not to make any changes to the game that one type of player enjoys that another type of player would hate. Sometimes they mess up, for example, the experimental villager trade changes. It fixed the terribly broken trade balance, so it was great for the players who enjoy good combat and progression, but it was terrible for the players that prefer resource gathering and building who depend on those trades being broken. Hence the backlash and the changes being made experimental after their initial release. There are so many different types of players with mutually exclusive desires that Mojang is effectively limited to minimally disruptive additions. Honestly, I think they're doing incredibly well now, especially with the current update.

No-Cartoonist5381

That’s exactly it, MC is an extremely valuable product, devs won’t have control over it anymore.

volthunter

Its actually the opposite, Microsoft is BEGGING them to add more shit, but mojang is literally refusing and because they have a specific contract that gives them full control Microsoft cannot do shit. This is 100% mojang

mollekylen

This argument never made sense. Even if we take the ideas that went through all this "hell", why they are so underdeveloped? Ok, the gods at microsoft approved the sniffer, but why would you add only 2 useless flowers that can be found with it's help? I was expecting the torchflower to be like the torchberries from twilight forest, yet here we are.

Ok-Recommendation447

The flowers also need to go through the hell.

mollekylen

What kind of developer's boogey man are we talking about?

Ok-Recommendation447

Microsoft. Obviously a company is going to want to look at everything before they can put it in.

mirbatdon

Corporate politics basically. Imagine Microsoft is a smaller version of your country's government. Observe how quickly and effectively real change happens (or rather doesn't). Not exclusive to developers or tech, just an inertia of innovation that grows with the size of a company or revenue source. Lots of people have vested interests in every little decision.

VaultedRYNO

tbf they did warn us the sniffer flowers were purely decorative...

mollekylen

I wasn't expecting the flowers to give you super powers or make a new op armor, why can't a plant named torchberry - emit light?

VaultedRYNO

itd be cool yes and I think they shouldve but I didnt vote for the sniffer because they said the flowers werent going to have any use beyond decorative and Lighting is a use.

mollekylen

It doesn't have to be a reskin of a torch, it can emit a light level of 2-3 and still be cool

VaultedRYNO

yes it very much would be. but thats still a use.

NotYourReddit18

Also they don't need to run the April Fools updates through rigorous testing to iron out most conceivable bugs and don't need to worry about balancing them against existing gameplay elements, both of which take up significant amounts of time.

John_Brickermann

Fucking exactly. I’m getting tired of this BS where people are hating on moJang and continuing to bite the hand that feeds them!! Without mojang, *there is no minecraft*. Blame Microsoft for making everything 10 times harder

Ambiguous_Duck

Tbh the next update seems like it’s going to be too much. While the whole puzzle dungeons and hammers are very cool, it doesn’t feel like Minecraft. The overworld isn’t ours anymore 😢. This was originally going to start with a comment about the permanence of main updates and that they are required to mesh with the world on assumed perpetual time scale, accounting for future updates, then I got sad.

Neveljack

Doesn't make them immune to criticism

Corruptedplayer

i havent said that. or at least i havent tried to imply that. i wanted to give a reason that the updates arent as creative as they can be. it sucks that it is that way

coffinp

It's does, imagine having a really cool creative idea that needs multiple smaller features to be properly implemented then get told by management "Oh it'll take 3 weeks to approve each one"

splashtext

Every April fool's joke should have had one thing that stayed

Matt_The_Slime

Some of them have, like horses!

splashtext

Weren't silverfish also originally an April fool's joke

DaydreemAddict

The moon's low gravity, and size potions are being added in 1.20.5, though commands instead

-PepeArown-

No. The only April Fool’s update around that time was the locked chest one, I think. Update 2.0, I think it was, added “redstone bugs”, which were retextured red silverfish that’d occasionally appear when messing with redstone. Although, that could’ve been the basis for endermites, which occasionally appear when throwing Ender pearls.

-PepeArown-

Last year’s copper spleaves are added and being renamed to grates. They’ve been a day 1 1.21 feature.

RandomGuyPii

spider man mechanic is vastly overselling it, it just unceremoniously drags you to wherever you're looking

Kindly-Ad-5071

Give it a month and they could polish it.

RandomGuyPii

I mean yeah I won't be surprised if they're building up to an Aether announcement or a major end overhaul with this sort of thing, including a grappling hook as the cool item akin to the mace. April Fool's has always been a bit of a testbed for the Mojang devs. that being said its equally likely this is all just shenanigans and we don't see much out of it in the short term.

Floggered

So... a *grappling hook*

Infinite_Twelve

Fitting profile picture

Floggered

Flip-a-dip-dip!

Lemme_LoL

I remember many many years ago a mod that added the movement gear from attack on Titan to Minecraft, that shit was so good

ducknerd2002

This would be funnier if the next *actual* update didn't have a decent amount of cool stuff: mace, trial chambers, Breeze, Bogged, wolf variants, wind charges, auto-crafter, more tuff and copper blocks, etc.

zippycat9

yeah mojang has absolutely delivered on the upcoming update

HardCounter

All stuff that's been in mods for a decade. They're hardly breaking new ground.

PlagueDoctor_049

About anything in the mods. What new you expect that mods haven't done before?

samusestawesomus

“Decent”? The trial chambers are HUGE. Especially with the new Ominous effects.

milanove

Man Minecraft sounds a lot cooler since I last played it. I played it a lot, but when they added the villagers and enchantment stuff, I noped out.

jadecaptor

...That was over 10 years ago

milanove

Yeah

AyyIsForApple

this is so funny to me lol when people say “since last i played the game” i feel like they mean a few years not a decade 😂

grokthis1111

A decade is a few years for some people.

FuckBoySupreme

Oh man, I've been playing on and off since before they implemented a hunger bar and the villagers and enchantments updates added so much fun stuff in my opinion

milanove

I think the addition of the enchantments is what made me quit. It felt like they were going in a fantasy/rpg direction with the game. However, in hindsight enchantment can be viewed as metallurgy, medicine, chemistry, etc.

Nkromancer

I mean, one of the main inspirations for the game was Dwarf Fortress. Plus three of the oldest hostile mobs were Zombies, Skeletons, and giant spiders. Minecraft has had fantasy RPG in its DNA from very early on. And the enchanting can only really be viewed as that, not metallurgy. THAT would probably be upgrading from diamond to netherite. Enchanting just provides a good and simple way to upgrade tools.

milanove

Yeah I guess it was pretty fantasy from the start. The addition of the hunger bar also made it less fun for me because I kept having to find food instead of only eating when I needed to heal. I guess it makes more sense being a survival game and all, but it felt like a real chore at the time lol

Nkromancer

Yeah, hunger bar is a big mixed bag. Like, I get it for some balancing stuff, but it can be annoying especially early game. Luckily there are some farm designs for great food items, and even if you don't wanna be that technical a simple wheat field to feed an army of cows is enough. Edit: oh yeah, I think there might be a world setting to disable hunger? I don't remember.

Stop_Sign

I played a thousand hours on a creative server I could fly in and with unlimited blocks, and it was just drawing. This was before villagers even existed in the game. My earliest reddit submissions are creations from that server, 13 years ago

FabianRo

And on top of that (or rather underlying it) huge amounts of technical changes. You can now customise almost every aspect of any item, lots of the janky cross-server stuff that some big modded servers use is now better in Vanilla, you can change attributes like gravity or size of any entity, … The 1.20.5 changelog is 39 screen pages long! And the amount of changes per week is insane. If this continues, Slicedlime will get burnout just from making update videos.

Mogoscratcher

I hate how people miss what Minecraft's april fools updates are actually saying. People don't really get the idea that "modded content can be produced at a faster rate compared to base game content because of all the extra requirements and expectations placed on base game content compared to modded". But the evidence is right here - the April Fools update is saying, "here's what we could do if we were on the same playing field as modded content". I mean, think about it. "The mojang devs are really lazy, except when it comes to april fools updates"? How is that realistic, or even consistent with the fictional character that the fanbase projects onto Mojang?

UTI_UTI

Also like, most of the update is reskinned items. I enjoyed it but also it’s a lot easier to reskin a pig than it is to create an entirely new terrain generation with no major bugs that also doesn’t make Minecraft feel like a different game.

elasticcream

Tbqh 1.18, the best update since... Comparators? It might just be the best one now that I'm looking at it. (Pls no bully I wasn't playing during adventure.) Did make it feel like a different game. I've heard and agree that they don't want to touch the golden goose, but also don't understand why they're making so many updates in the first place.

LevelOutlandishness1

Yeah I came back to Minecraft after not playing for a while, started Hardcore, and holy shit are the caves better. Still treacherous and stressful to get caught up and die in, but it’s actually a fun process now instead of getting stale after a couple of years (been playing for eleven years so just imagine).

FamilySpy

1.16 nether update is the best update 1.14 village and pillage is second 1.18 is like fifth, mostly cause half the features ended up split between 1.17, 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21

Kindly-Ad-5071

The devs aren't the problem. Microsoft, parity (more like parody) and Mojang corporate are the issue. Fuckem.

clickclickclik

most of the latest minecraft criticism on twitter can be boiled down to fortnite fans astroturfing hate against minecraft devs to be honest lol

JickleBadickle

Maybe they shouldn't be trapping their devs under so much red tape, then

ineternet

Compared to modded content, this April fools update is still utter dogshit though, so yeah, on the same playing field, they're still lazy

Exciting-Ad-5705

The creme de le creme maybe but it's better than a lot. You also have to keep in mind this wasn't their full effort

ANF00

If you’re aware of how hard it is to get (and keep) a game dev job in the industry, you’d know that being lazy as a game dev is not an option if you wanna keep your job for more than 2 seconds.

rasmatham

It was likely made by like 3 people over the span of like a week in their spare time, though. Most mods are significantly smaller than what the April fool's updates are, and the larger mods are made by teams and/or over the span of months or years.

KindHeartedGreed

when will people understand the issue with coding Minecraft is making it work well on Java + Bedrock + running well on a million fucking devices they can go wild for April fools because it doesn’t matter if it runs like shit, is buggy, or is exclusive to Java. It’s experimental.

FoolishConsistency17

Also, it can't break anything currently running on worlds that have been updated 15 times.

ComfortableOver8984

It’s mainly the fact that every single addition needs to go through corporate hell before being implemented. Microsoft is terrified of bloating the game out, that they don’t let Mojang add what they want to add. But on April fools updates, they don’t need to pass everything through corporate hell, so they get a bunch done.

[deleted]

Ok so give the updates more time to cook and release something cool ? I don't get it why release boring ass updates when you can work on them longer to make sure you deliver something awesome ? Clearly they are able to but they'd rather make you wait a year for a turtle that has no impact on gameplay

MeXoof

So instead of an update every year change it to every 2 years? Yes the April fools day updates has a ton of stuff but it's mostly reskinned or MSPaint textures, buggy items, and tossed together mechanics. And it's ONLY for Java and only if your pc can handle it

SonicSeth05

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but as a game dev, this is very easily something a game development team could handle in a few weeks (or months at the worst). The blame is most definitely on Mojang for not letting them do anything.

Cue99

It frustrates me that a lot of people won’t see this as a tech demo of what Minecraft’s internal API is clearly capable of with a relatively low amount of work. Mojang have done so much to make the game easier to develop and it shows. Not only with things like the April fools updates but also with full on features. The improvements to world generation, datapacks, code structure, etc take a lot of effort. Refactoring is hard and thankless work but it enables so much more.

RedTheGamer12

Also in 1.20 (the update that caused 90% of these complaints) rewrote the entire lighting engine to improve performance. There is a lot of work on the backend.

Fr00stee

I think this has more content because its not really new content, 90% of this is just retextured and renamed existing blocks. The only new stuff is the world gen which imo looks extremely similar to the aether mod world gen edit: turns out the world gen is an already existing preset

Im_a_Casual

The world gen isn’t new either, it’s using the Floating Islands preset which has been in the game for a long time now

-PepeArown-

Can’t you easily make this type of world generation by selecting floating islands in the buffet settings?

Fr00stee

yeah ur right someone else mentioned it was a preset

samusestawesomus

…have you people SEEN the new snapshots?

Matt_The_Slime

They have, but complaining is easier than understanding how development works

[deleted]

Imagine getting mad that a fifteen year old game that is still releasing free updates isn’t doing enough

TheChartreuseKnight

Yeah Minecraft is like $25 now, and it was $10 (?) on release.

lostmykeyblade

just a little 15 year old indie title, with a modest rating of most sold game in the world.

charlie-the-Waffle

microsoft doesn't allow them to have fun with the 'real' updates, which is why the april fools updates are always so much more interesting

Vievin

Even RWBY fans don't hate RWBY like Minecraft fans hate Minecraft.

ineternet

The base game*. Mods make it bearable.

footballmaths49

If a game has to add mods to be good, it's a bad game.

GalaxP

Wdym Mojang have been pushing fire updates recently

No_Window7054

Minecraft fans are indistinguishable from literal children. I havent seen anyone get mad over a (potential) April Fools joke since elementary school.

LibrarianOfAlex

Man who hasn't seen the past April fools snapshots

fynnelol

it's mainly microsoft's fault. if mojang was left indie, we wouldnt have this problem

AR-Tempest

Idk Mojang often plays it safe but I don’t blame them. The game is already really good and if they go too far on them people will get upset at the fact that it doesn’t feel the same anymore.

Matt_The_Slime

I love how people forget all the technical changes that go on behind the scenes to make the game better overall, and it’s just cause “it’s not muh new 40 biomes and 80 mobs”. Sethbling’s recent videos have been an excellent example of just how amazing these new updates have been, as he made ROCKET LEAGUE with actual physics in game. Crazy stuff!

Cue99

Thank you for adding this. All I see here is “wow that’s a really impressive tech demo of how their internal apis must work”.

Matt_The_Slime

Of course! I’m sick and tired of all the slop mojang gets thrown their way, like yeah I agree with some of the gripes (such as the mob vote), but it ain’t their fault that they can’t always make an update like April fools.

Cue99

Exactly! I feel the same way. I won’t deny that I wish features added in the past would get more love and attention. honestly they seem to be doing that more and more. The caves and cliffs update was a bit of a mess for sure when it came to development timelines. And looking at 1.21 i love that new features are being integrated into old features (new banner patterns, new sherds, new armor trims, new enchantments, etc) I hope this is an indication of the development style going forward

Blue_Robin_04

Why do people need updates in Minecraft? Isn't it good enough as is?

Sentineluno

It is but people just wanna complain for complaining sake, i am glad people outisde the minecraft circle see this

Blue_Robin_04

Yeah. I don't play the game, but I know that it's already the biggest damn thing ever created. You could already spend your whole life doing something different every day in the game. I don't understand what adding an enemy or two after thirteen years will revolutionize.

Different_Gear_8189

April fools snapshots are legitimately testing grounds you cant change my mind

King_Tudrop

Wasn't a whole bunch of the April fools stuff last year coded by a community team? I thought mojang outsourced the April fools updates.

TruthOrBullshite

Just play modded. It's not even that hard to get started

Zariman-10-0

Mojang when the players ask for more than one mob per update: nah too much work Mojang when making an update for April 1st that’ll only be used one day out of 365: okay it’s worth it

ClassicalCoat

People don't understand the internal beurocracy that updates have to go through. Microsoft is terrorfied of changing minecraft too much in case they it loses popularity and stops raking in money. The April fools updates are treated differently, Mojang have free reign to have fun, without big brother Microsoft breathing down their necks.

Teshuko

It’s not a proper update, so no quintuple checks on every single letter in the code. But it still does put major updates to shame. Like *this* is what we could get if things were more lenient?

DandoriKing1932

They put all the effort into the joke and then take there daily 8 hour break

ComfortableOver8984

I hate the “Mojang is lazy joke” it’s not funny and just false. Every single addition Mojang wants to add has to go through corporate hell to get approved, and most of it doesn’t. With April fools updates, they can just add whatever they want, no holds barred.

-PepeArown-

They added four new potions just last week.

PastPriority-771

Finally someone says it. The April Fools joke will put more content in a temporary event than the actual updates.

[deleted]

They gonna add a new color and finally give us the long awaited emerald armor that’s weaker than iron.

Zirofal

Meanwhile me who had several different grappling hooks for nearly a decade due to mods

Fostrel

They should stop updating minecraft its a perfect game as it is. In an effort to preserve what minecraft is they should just make a new game.

Internal_Camel_5734

"Next update better not just be reused wood and useless mobs!" Potato pigs and green potato wood are very good examples of useful mobs and unique wood, am I right?

Jrolaoni

Microsoft lets mojang do whatever the hell they want with April Fools updates because it’s not permanent.

Aaaaaaaahg

Y'all just use mods damn

BlazingImp77151

Renegade is vastly under selling the 1.21 update here. We've got new potions, a mace, a whole new type of dungeon, and reworks to some other mechanics and we aren't even done. Plus I don't think a new wood type is being added, and the breeze isn't quite useless.

Stefan_S_from_H

Am I the only one who doesn't want Minecraft updates that aren't bug and performance fixes? I stopped playing a few months ago. I can't stand all the updates the game received. Or is there now a classic mode to play Minecraft like it was 5 years ago?

Macknificent101

the april fools updates often test out systems that get implemented later, like the one infinite dimension one that tested new dimension systems, allowing them to rework the nether a bit later. if they are making stuff like this, it probably means they will be working to add some similar items to the game if microsoft would just let them

AltAccountYippee

God fucking sake. I made an entire thread about why this kind of a take is actively *damaging* to our game, community, and developers and it's like screaming from the mountaintop doomed to give called never to be heeded. Why why why are we like this

Bacon_Hunter

Yeah, they'd better create some cool new content that I will get excited about in this game that I paid for a long time ago and got nearly 1000 hours of enjoyment out of so far, or ELSE! /s

whywouldisaymyname

sorry, but vanilla minecraft didn't even give me 10 hours of enjoyment. It's boring af

ClosetedAndScared

quantity =/= quality . If they added a bunch of stuff it would feel like too much. I already only play 1 play through like every 1-2 years and I feel stressed having to learn the new stuff each time. I feel like the rate they are going at now for updates is good for the long term health of the game. Adding a Big update would give Minecraft a Big boost in the short term but I feel people would lose interest Fast.

iris700

I think Mojang's been avoiding doing anything too big since people were so whiny about 1.9 (they had to do more than spam their buttons to win in PVP)

AssuasiveLynx

minecraft fundamentally in my opinion should not change drastically. Minecraft is not terraria in that it needs a hundred different bosses and weapons—and mojang knows that. if they dont release a single additional content update and just work on backend performance improvements and bugfixes, i will die happy

AllastorTrenton

Except that's not minecraft's identity at all and it never has been. Even since the early days, it's always been a game of "But what will they add next". It's already fundamentally drastically changed many times.

Tacosallday25

I'm wondering when people are going to stop treating Minecraft like an RPG. I want a lot of cool content too, but it's clear most people are extrinsically motivated and will just get bored again once they play through all of the new content. It wouldn't be as bad if people were intrinsically motivated and had just a little creativity.

Billy_Billboard

Minecraft fans are the whiniest people on earth I swear.

WeevilWeedWizard

Minecraft fans are among the whiniest, most entitled little shit heads out there.

revive_iain_banks

Just play terraria instead. That one has all that and a shitload more. I actually find it kinda overwhelming with so so many features and content.

scriptedtexture

why Minecraft fans so entitled to new stuff like they paying a subscription or something

NewLibraryGuy

The game is already out. Any update they make is gravy, unless they're selling it as something it's not.

Dr_Catfish

What's wrong with the game being finished and complete? Yall have modders. If the version never changes and nodding isn't broken ever update, you can get some really advanced mods that don't get left in the dust having to be reworked due to updates every couple months. Stability > New shit Whoever asked for the insomnia carpets needs to be burned at the stake.

Kindly-Ad-5071

"Oh we're just so *exaggerated yawn* tireddddd and... It's so haaaard to stay within a theme. So here's a funny camel and some wood. Oh and we're removing dogs because they're actually unhealthy for rabbits sawryyyyy" I hate Mojang.

-PepeArown-

What’s the point in joking about the last point when they’ve added dyable wolf armor and multiple new wolf variants in this update? That’s like your family getting you a cake for you birthday, and you immediately making an ungrateful joke about how this generation is so sensitive that cakes will have to be banned next year because white frosting is offensive, or something.

Nierad25

thats why i prefer terraria, even if i cringe at these game wars

No_Squirrel4806

The last time i played minecraft was before it was sold to microsoft. Ive been wanting to get back into it but based on what ive seen they havent added anything worth returning for.
