Without reading your caption first, I thought you’re a student going back to university and thought to myself „wow 1 & 2 are nice but 3 looks like a professor or teacher should wear it“. Then I read your caption. That being said, I’d go for number 3 :D!

exoisGoodnotGreat

This, exactly this. This person might be reading my thoughts actually 🤔

1plus1dog

As well as mine. Kind of shocked me tbh

threebeansalads

Same! I was like - geez I used to shuffle from res to class in jeans and hoodie lol!! I never had the money to look this good!!! But as a prof for sure #3

dmgirl101

Hoodie + jeans + tennis shoes= winner during school days 😁

dmgirl101

Same here, I thought "a student?? It's more suitable for a professor" 🤪 go ahead #3!

CAPTCHA_later

I was going to say… pretty sure I wore pajamas to every class that started before 1pm

fancczf

All 3 are very mature and on the professional sides. I was thinking when I was in undergrad even in grad school everyone was wearing sweatshirts

rainbowsforall

Me too I was like no matter what outfit you choose you'll be tbe best dressed student other than thay one guy who always wears a suit for some reason.

ATrueBruhMoment69

reading this as my local school has frat rush week and theres hundreds of guys in suits everywhere haha

Embarrassed_Virus567

Same… I was going to comment jeans and a Tee is fine. But now that I read the assignment I would say 1 is my choice.

Puta_Chente

As a fellow professor, 3 is the best, 1 is pushing the boundaries, 2 is too low. My school was a little more lax and most of us wore jeans or business casual. Is this your first class? Maybe I'm the one that needs to get her outfits updated lol

katecrime

Fellow professor as well. The heels alone are *killing* me.

omgyayay

One of my Spanish professors (from Spain) always had on heels and was dressed to the nines looking glamorous. I think that might just be Spanish culture though, it stood out to me but wasn’t bad.

obsessionwithartists

I think it's Spanish culture. During my summer job, everyone else used to dress casual except for one Spanish guy who would come dressed in proper formals.

NotNowEpimetheus

Might be worth noting then that I’m not American despite teaching here.

DeerMeatloaf

I suspected. Americans don't tend to wear tailored clothes so well

ButtBorker

In high school, we had a Spanish teacher from Spain and she was young and beautiful. She wore very form-fitting dresses and skirts and compared to the other young female teachers, she definitely dressed more provocatively. The other young female teachers would wear khaki pants and sweater vests or long dresses or would dress very business casual. The Spanish teacher looked like she actually cared about how she looked and wanted to present herself that way. When she first got there, all the dudes in school thought they could try and flirt with her.. she stopped that with a *quickness*. She developed a reputation.. for being a stern but fair, no nonsense teacher.

NotNowEpimetheus

This is also my reputation. Last semester verbatim quote on a student review was “hard but fair”. What might come as a shock to this thread is that in 6 years of teaching I’ve never had a student comment on my style.

meredare

That’s such a compliment!! Hard means you’re pushing them and fair speaks highly of your work. Great job! 3 is my favorite.

meeanne

I had the same thought, “outfits are cute, but HEELS‽”

fayhigh

Why is everything feminine so “unprofessional”

lhopitalified

Also, what’s wrong with appearing old and stuffy? I guarantee what you say and what you do are going to be much bigger factors in whether students find you approachable than whether your outfit is “hip”.

NotNowEpimetheus

I’m not trying to avoid being old and stuffy for my students benefit. It’s for my benefit. I don’t want that to be my vibe. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that if that’s your jam, but that’s not my preference.

Angry-Eater

I’m a newer professor (almost 2 years in and I teach genetics) in my early 30s and what you describe is what I’m used to. Jeans with a button up. Or nice trousers with a t-shirt. Kind of a clean, upgraded casual. But always modest as hell because the last thing I want is for any of my students to think about my boobs. So no, I don’t think you’re the one who need to be updated!

Sideways_planet

I agree about the modesty and the reason for it.

dogslogic

Agreed. The top in #2 is waaaay too revealing.

Economic_Nexus

And in 1 too, honestly

etoni888

I'm all for dresses with big pockets for all the pens/ markers/ usb sticks/ phone / keys and flat shoes. Look after your feet, you'll miss them when they're gone.

allaboutthequeens

Really applies to any professional job. Any cleavage (even what’s shown in pic 1) is a big No no. You will not be taken seriously by management.

one_effin_nice_kitty

depends on the industry and also personality of the professional. I'm male, but in my engineering jobs I never dressed like the others who were typically basic button down and slacks. I could never allow myself to be so vanilla (nothing wrong with it though). I like being a noticeably flamboyant dresser and none of the old fogies cared about anything besides my output and quality fo work so eh, YMMV.

S74dniuk

I'm a blood bank and inmunohematology newer teacher, also in my early 30, and I also wear jeans and a button up, I even throw in some all black vans. I'm not from the US, so the similarities kinda surprised me

Secret_Dragonfly9588

Also a fellow professor: - I can not *imagine* wearing those heels around campus. Do you not have to walk anywhere, OP? My feet hurt after a day of teaching even if I am wearing tennis shoes. - this is far more formal than I or any of my colleagues dress. Different universities have different cultures so maybe just be aware of what your colleagues are wearing and try to match the tone, OP. - in terms of appropriateness, I think 2 is the only one that is “too sexy.” (Edit: actually, I probably would hesitate over wearing 1 on campus also. But the cami would be fine under another layer.) - my favorite source of outfit inspiration directly for professors: https://phdinclothes.com/tag/outfits/ - I have found that generally “preppy” style is more universally worn among professors than this type of business formal. There’s a reason why so much of preppy style is now thought of as “academia aesthetic.” - another way to hit the right level of formality: if your school is more casual generally, go for two casual pieces and one elevated one (jeans, basic T-shirt, a blazer). If your school is more formal, switch the ratio to two elevated pieces and one casual one (trousers, basic T-shirt, a blazer). **Outfit 1 edit:** Keep the skirt. In the fall you could just put a cardigan on over the cami. But given the weather: switch the cami for a T-shirt or some other more casual piece that works for the weather. A striped Breton shirt would look great with that skirt! Switch those death heals for something you can walk around in all day: loafers, supportive sandals, white tennis, etc. **Outfit 2 edit:** Keep the trousers. Exchange the top for a more casual one: maybe a simple white T-shirt would look best with those trousers. Alternatively, you could keep the outfit a bit more formal and wear a blouse or a button up of some kind. I can’t tell—are those flats? If so you will have to be the judge of if they are supportive enough for walking around your campus. **Outfit 3 edit:** It’s very formal, but it works as is with one small edit: Switch those death heals for something you can walk around in all day: loafers, white tennis shoes, etc.

crissssb

To piggyback, if you’re set on wanting some extra height go for a pair of loafers with a platform. Intentionally blank and vagabond have great options (though they do have a higher price point) These will feel young and fun but also professional without killing your feet.

CuriousPalpitation23

A solid breakdown, I heartily agree.

auto-vern

Thank you for the link! Love her outfits.

WellWellWellthennow

Death Heels lol. Yep.

sweetsunnyspark

Yes, the first two outfits would be great with a slightly more conservative top or another layer on top, like a cardigan or jacket.

fakeitilyamakeit

I’m not a professor but this is really helpful. Thank you!

warmhellothere

I Loved it when on my first day in class, as a student, I saw my profs wearing jeans.

burner_duh

I'm also a professor. Outfit 3 is the only outfit among these that I'd consider appropriate for work.

Original_Confusion88

Same. And I wouldn't wear those heels, but more power to you if you can rock heels all day. I would say both #1 and #2 are far too low cut. I'm in my 30s and at a pretty casual institution, but no way would I show that much cleavage for work. #1 blouse maybe with a cardigan or blazer over.

ShowMeYourMinerals

Mine dressed like Indiana Jones, but then again, I am a geologist… lol

[deleted]

This is interesting cuz in the UK professors seem to wear whatever the fuck they want ahaha, very relaxed.

Grubula

Agree with this. And maybe 3 is good for the job interview after the school? Edit: oh my comment might look weird.. thought she was a student. Eep

Just_a_nobody_2

I don’t think 1 is pushing it I think it’s very flattering. The top isn’t too low cut and the skirt is a good length… 2 is definitely pushing it but I do love those trousers.

derp_cutie

One would be a better option with a tailored blazer. Three is the better choice, but how do the people in your department dress? Students are there to gain the knowledge that you have and having the ability to cultivate a community is important. If the heels prevent you from walking around the campus or classroom it is a no. As an interactive professor, I would opt for something that is comfortable and professional. When I began teaching I looked more like a student not because of how I dressed, but because of how young I looked, if you are not comfortable all of these things will read as costume. I also have had both male and female students ask me out and share that I was their crush- so just remember your audience.

chemical_sunset

I’m a professor and I do think 1 is pushing it. Keep in mind that students could see down a blouse while sitting next to a prof in office hours, for example, and moving your arms during a lecture could show a lot of cleavage in that top. I dress a lot more conservatively for work than I do in normal life because the focus is on my students’ learning, not how cute I can look. Also, visible bra straps are an immediate and emphatic no in academia.

AsleepHistorian

I think it's a bit unfair to assume that because you can tell a woman has breasts it's inappropriate. 1 is fine, great for the summer. 3 is fine, great for chillier days. 2 I agree, if it didn't have the cut in the centre and went straight across instead, it would be totally fine. But women have breasts, to expect them to cover up to their neck and down their arms is ridiculous. The men in university are adults, if they can't focus and don't know how to behave themselves then maybe they should be talked to, not the professor who happens to have a bigger bust. I would also greatly respect a professor dressing like this. When I went to uni it was business casual for sure, but I would never see a professor putting in effort and think it's weird. I also used to wear heels everyday at university, it's quite easy to walk around the campus, it's not as much of a killer as people seem to think. If you're used to it and have quality shoes it's not an issue.

[deleted]

1. Add blazer. 2. Higher cut shirt. 3. Add cami underneath 2 would be my favorite with a different shirt!!

[deleted]

My eyes aren't working. I thought #2 was get a haircut and I was like damn, that's harsh but it was just my eyes doing whatever they want it seems.

WingofTech

Smart tips!

viscidpaladin

Blazer or thin coat with 1 or 3

NotNowEpimetheus

Thanks. My blazer has 3/4 arms so would only work with 1 at the moment but I’m hearing I may need to invest in more blazers.

Dear-Ambition-273

You’re a professor without a closet of blazers? WHAT!!

Ok_General_6940

I am a professor with 5, lol one for each day of the week if I need it

SpiceEarl

Do they make tweed blazers with elbow patches for women? Or, is that only for male professors?

Snoo_79218

I hope they do, I love those blazers

neutralperson6

Yes, I used to own one. It was from The Limited. Black House White Market, The Loft, Express, and Banana Republic all have similar style clothing.

MrsRyan2016

Blazers are a game changer !

PierogiesNSourCream

Stitch Fix has some cheapish ones that are more casual and you can throw in the washer

Katdai2

2 looks very nice, but I would not wear it to work.

3 is fine. I would not do 1 or 2.

Snow_Wonder

Agree with this comment. 1 is a little risqué for teaching. I think the more work-appropriate way to casual things up would be a shorter skirt, rather than a low neckline. I’m in the south (US) though, and I’m not sure if standards aren’t different elsewhere.

Critterhunt

I agree with both of you

[deleted]

The shoes in #1 are to die for.

catastrophicqueen

Honestly I wouldn't bat an eye if my professors had something cut like that. Maybe it's a US thing to think it's too risque, but if one of my profs wore that I think we'd all just get on with class. If anything my thing would be about these being pretty formal for a lecturer in my university unless they had an event or a meeting the same day. Normally it's jeans and jumpers or button downs.

wast3landr

As a (female) professor in the U.S., I’d suggest #3. I’d add a slip shirt or camisole, so your bra isn’t as obvious. Or maybe a nude colored bra. Pants and heels in #2 are great; I’d add a slightly more covered-up top like a v-neck that isn’t as low-cut. You don’t want students to be able to look down your cleavage. Skirt in #1 is great; add a tank that covers some cleavage and isn’t spaghetti strap and doesn’t expose bra straps. The less distracting (cleavage, tight skirt, party heels), the better for focusing on the content. It also keeps better boundaries between students and faculty. Students will (and do) ask professors out, so it’s best to dress in a way that avoids blurred lines.

Xxx_chicken_xxx

WOMEN SHOULD NOT WEAR WHITE BRAS UNDER WHITE BLOUSES. Actually i have no idea why anyone sells white bras. Wear skin colored bras under light colored blouses. Thank me later

emi_lgr

It’s kinda in right now to wear white bras with see-through white blouses. Def not at work though.

NopeOriginal_

Why is that?

itssmeagain

You can see white bras just as well as black bras.

confettibaby

Red under white is even better

anetanetanet

Wait how?

confettibaby

I have no idea but try it. It has to be a true red or burgundy not pinkish red.

BlueMonkTrane

WJY DO PEIPLE WEAR WHITE BRAS?! like really? It’s not that real of an issue. I think it looks Interesting when done well. That is a stupid rule Edit: OP I like the pencil skirts, they look good on you. I am partial to pants though, and those grey slacks look great. But swap out the top. The gray top from outfit 1 may sub in with the gray pants , but you’ll have to test it. Like warm vs cool gray

Snoo_79218

Lol I feel attacked right now

Xxx_chicken_xxx

Sorry. But we all can see them

1plus1dog

I’m thanking you now for saying what needs to be said!

jseney93

1 or 3. 2 shows too much cleavage for a professor imo

Kirin1212San

1 and 2 are not appropriate. 3 looks great. You can also consider outfits that are slightly more casual.

junk-drawer-magic

I love your style! Ugh, where do you shop?? I think, given the context, I'd wear something like top 1 with pants 2 and throw on a blazer and a skinny belt.

Over-Accountant8506

I agree! All of the comments saying that the outfits are too much, some people like to dress up. I don't have fancy clothes like these but half my wardrobe is dresses.

NotNowEpimetheus

Mostly Lulus, Express, and shoes from Nine West.

Virtual-Virus7324

For a professor at a university, I would say 3.

Curly-Pat

1 needs a blaser; 2 you need a different top, the top you have on, is too low cut for work; 3 sort of washes you out a bit, maybe try tan leather shoes and belt, not sure if it would help. All 3 outfits fit you well and flatter your shape.

Lady-Apple-Jack

Would love to know where the pants in 2 are from!

sassycatastrophe

Same here! Love them!

NotNowEpimetheus

Happy to share. That entire outfit comes from Lulus, except the shoes. https://www.lulus.com/products/flawlessly-sophisticated-grey-pinstripe-wide-leg-pants/2039836.html

Vast-Ad4194

The dress code where I used to work was no armpits visible, no sheers, no open toe shoes. We had to maintain a business setting. Clothing certainly sets the tone. Just something to consider.

fdxrobot

Outfits are super cute on you but not work attire for a professional as-is. Shirts for 1&2 are not appropriate for any office. Shirt 3 is completely sheer. You’d need an undershirt, but I wouldn’t bother. Maybe skirt 1 is fine, but skirt 3 is so skin tight your panty line is showing. The pants are great. Get smarter shoes. The heels in 1 are for a cocktail hour date, not class. Heels in 3 are ok but you will hate life very quickly.

Xxx_chicken_xxx

Shirt 3 is not too sheer, she is just wearing a wrong bra. Nude bra would sort it out. White bras are a fucking abomination. They are visible under white to a blind man on a flying horse

HuskyLettuce

This.

ttotto45

This is the right answer.

girlontheground

Shoes on number one look like you’re going to the club to party.

Mammoth-Standard5803

1 and 2 are not professional.

Deshaun288

Feel old I thought this was a freshman on campus 😂 I like 3

Wayne2018ZA

1 as a student. 3 as a professor.

mrsgrayjohn

I love Amal Clooneys style, which I think would work really well on you. Professional but still feminine. I would avoid any cleavage or sheer tops as it can make you appear less credible or professional.

DepthDry6053

I agree that style would flatter her.

CollieSchnauzer

Former professor here. You look FAB in all three but I think the tops on 1 & 2 are too low-cut for academia or teaching. Everyone I knew dressed way more casually than #3--even the fashionable Argentinian woman. Are those heels comfortable enough for zooming around campus? I wore basic skirts, flats, easy tops and dress pants. If I were going to dress up I would have worn a blazer or a business suit.

NotNowEpimetheus

I’m lucky to have an office in the same building as my classrooms and my lab. And to be fair I’ve been teaching daily in heels for years. Even when adjuncting at 3 different NYC campuses. If I can run up subway stairs in heels, I think I’ve got this.

KitFan2020

Lovely clothes but not for work in a university! Go for a more professional look - less cleavage.

drumadarragh

I’m a c-suite exec, and I would never show cleavage like that second top at work, let alone to students. Remember you are not only teaching the students you’re showing them. Empower them to know they can look amazing without sexualizing. And I know, we should be able to dress how we please, but I’d rather not be the eye candy at the front of the room.

CommunicationTop7259

3

leila_laka

Tops 1 & 2 are not appropriate for work in my opinion. Need a blazer and maybe less cleavage showing top. You look great but it just doesn’t seem “professional” to me.

g_flower

3 looks professional, except your skirt seems a size too small. 1 and 2 are not professional, especially 2.

DeterminedErmine

I get that you don’t want to be seen as frumpy or whatever, but 1 and 2 aren’t really workplace friendly. Though 1 would look super cute with a blazer. 3 is a bit frumpy, it’s giving cheesy ‘sexy’ librarian who just had a makeover

Ophelia_Y2K

it’s somehow both frumpy and too revealing lol (sorry)

Far-Bat5395

Where do you get all of your outfits particularly the skirts ?

NotNowEpimetheus

Happy to share! [Black skirt](https://www.lulus.com/products/refined-charm-black-high-waisted-bodycon-pencil-skirt/2182016.html) [Beige skirt](https://a.co/d/5Wm938N)

leepeeleepee

1. I love 2 but for a different occasion

Extreme-String8785

Shirt and jeans would probably do. Or a suit of some sort...a business chic type of thing

Aromatic_Mouse88

It all just looks so dated to me, but this is also not my style whatsoever. I am a lawyer and lucky to be able to dress a bit more edgy. This is giving me forever 21 vibes

Educational_Lake_147

have you been to forever 21 lately? they do not sell anything like this anymore. it's all weirdly super trendy fast fashion stuff.

Cheap-Substance8771

I absolutely love outfit 3. It's my favorite out of the 3. It's cute and flattering. I would wear a white tank top or something underneath tho because it is a bit see-through. I love the pants on outfit two. I think it would pair well with a different shirt that's higher cut. Outfit one is great too. Maybe some sort of a jacket, sweater, or blazer to cover the straps?

NotNowEpimetheus

Thanks for this advice. I’m going to try all of these ideas!

General-Company

*Anything* with cleavage showing isn’t going to be seen as professional.

GandalfTheChill

I'd go with 3. What follows is, I hope, generally helpful (though it may just be an annoying anecdote; if so, I apologize) \[context: I'm 32M, and I taught college English as a graduate fellow and/or adjunct until last year, when the pay finally became completely untenable\] The weird thing I learned over about 10 years of teaching college students was that the students *really* react more positively to informal dress. Going from a suit and tie, to no tie, to jeans and a button down, to a t-shirt and blazer made wild differences when it came to classroom culture. Resentment just kind of... drifted away. I had a few conversations with colleagues (other grad student teachers and adjuncts, not full time faculty) about this. None of the men had made a change in their dress over the years, but those who dressed more casually in general had a much easier time with the classroom. BUT. Every woman had completely the *opposite* experience. If they dressed even a bit more casually, things were worse. It was like the students, when it came to the men, thought that anything professional was "old and stuffy," and when it came to the women, thought that anything less than the utmost professional dress was inappropriate. It was such a bizarre double standard, that the students seemed to respect completely opposite modes of dress from different teachers. I don't know how universally that applies. These were just the conversations one group of teachers in one department in one university had based on our experiences over the course of a few years. But this post came up in my feed, and I thought this story might be useful. Anyway. Good luck with the semester!!!

bobasaur001

Seconding. Taught English. For me there was a weird sweet spot I had to it. Too formal and I had issues (especially being fetishized), too informal and they try to walk all over you, I went for business casual and kept a mostly black and white wardrobe so I could switch out pieces.

macaron_amour

Great comment - I dress a little more formally because I’m on the younger side as a professor and it really does make a difference in perception of authority/competency. 3 would be an outfit I’d wear, OP! I’m in the New England area and it’s definitely dressier than other institutions I’ve taught at outside of the New England area.

JanekkCZ

3

deadly3635

3 looks professional

sammisamantha

1. Skirt can work. Shoes are not professional. More like going out or fancy event shoes. Top is too low cut. 2. Trousers are great if paired with the right top. Unfortunately this top has even more boobage than the first. 3. Looks great! I would say these shoes can pair well with the skirt in outfit 1.

Luna-88

I have the same top (2) from Lulus. I love it, but it’s way too low cut for work. Especially for us bigger chested gals! I would go for 1 or 3

NotNowEpimetheus

The crazy thing is, I never thought of myself as bigger chested. I’ve always been rather flat so I never worried about necklines. I’m realizing from this post that maybe the girls have been getting bigger over the years without me noticing. So now I need to worry about necklines as well as hemlines!

Luna-88

Lol they snuck up on ya!

[deleted]

Oh, you are a professor! I was like geez what happened to throwing on some jeans, tee, hoodie, and kicks and running to your 8 am class in the morning, chewing on a pop tart and gulping a coffee?

pussycatsglore

Way too much cleavage in outfits 1 and 2

hr_newbie_co

3 is so lovely!! It looks fashion forward, super flattering, and definitely a great “first impression” outfit. I hope you have an awesome school year!!

elpatio6

All of these look like you’re trying too hard. Relax. Find something you really like and are comfortable in. Don’t think about how you *should* look, think about how you *want* to look.

AZ-FWB

I went to a very liberal public university and number 1&2 are even too much for what I’m used to seeing. It flags me as lack of awareness and not knowing your audience.

Oops_ibrokeit

You are beautiful, and I say this with love; If you want to keep it young and professional I would focus more on what’s on trend and less on looking sexy. Google, TikTok and Pinterest have some great references with phrases like “trendy young professional attire”.

TossMy__Usename

Everything, with the exception of the slacks in pix 2 is very snug on you and you look more like an Elle Woods (minus the pink) type of student than a professor. Where I'm from the trendy profs wear loose fitting dark wash jeans, a blazer and a round neck blouse/shirt. The blouse/shirt either has an interesting pattern or texture and they either wear the heels or some killer sneakers.

[deleted]

I would wear the last one to work! So cute (saving for reference)

IN005

I'd say number one, two looks like a outfit you could wear on a date and three looks like what an old lady would wear.

Academic_1989

I think there is nothing about you that will appear old and stuffy, no matter what you wear! Tone down the sexy outfits for work - remember what college students think about 90% of the time, (and it is not psychology). Lose the heels (they are beautiful) and go for either a shorter block heel or a cute flat. Number 2 is too revealing on top - but it is amazing look for dinner, theatre, etc. Blazers are good, but in most parts of the US right now are really too hot, so maybe a button up 3/4 sleeve dressy shirt, really with any of the bottoms. You want to say "I am brilliant with a PhD and you should hang on my every word". Eccentric is usually more than acceptable when dressing in academia, unless you are in the college of business. With your hair and coloring, you could do color really well (deep blues, pinks). At my university, almost everyone wears jeans. The department chair wears khakis and either a polo or a casual button-down. I wear cool and comfortable flow-y dresses and I am considered over-dressed, but it makes me happy.

AL_Starr

Come on.

gitsgrl

What country and what discipline? In the US most women professors wouldn’t be caught dead in anything like this, certainly not think heels when they are standing on a hard floor when lecturing.

Skylizard1223

3 is passable. You need more conservative options for a professor setting

saturatedbloom

1. needs a blazer, and that shoe makes it too sexy for a professor. Try a comfortable ballet flat. 2. Is too much chest. Change the shirt you’re good. 3. Seems dated tbh. I would change the top and pair with a blazer. Change the show to the ballet flat

1 or 3

smoothebrainape

You look like a paralegal that works for Pearson & Hardman

cheesypuzzas

I'd go with 2, but with a different top. 3 looks a bit old and stuffy. 1 is cute also, but it doesn't have that professional look if you know what I mean.

[deleted]

Number 3 all day , giving Megan markle in suits lol . Love it .

Moik_the_Adequate

They all look great, but I think as others have said it’s dependent on your role! Sounds you’re the professor and not the student. I like 1 and 3 in terms of being professional looking, and I think 3 gives an older generation vibe. 1 is definitely my choice. I’ve seen others mention adding to it, but I think it’s great as-is.

sweaterweatherNE

Gray pants with white blouse.

Fair-Huckleberry-471

The third photo shirt with second photo pants looks like a pretty combo as well

Horangi1987

1 is a little too much shoulder - makes it look casual. Can be fixed with a sweater or blazer (a nice quality buttoned sweater would be so cute) 2 is too much cleavage and if you wear a slim fitting shirt tucked in, a blazer to break up the waist would be nice 3 is lovely. Just make sure to swap in a nude bra so it’s more invisible and you should be good to go Yes, professors dress casual all the time, but if you are trying to dress more formal then you have to commit to that in full, hence 1 & 2 not working. I work for a French cosmetics company, so I keenly watch what our executives wear. They follow very conservative and traditional formal office rules, so no shoulders, cleavage, or visible underpinnings. Pants should be well tailored but never tight. Skirts are at knee or just above knee and no shorter. Suit jackets or blazers are worn, and they stay on in a meeting until/unless the most senior person in the room removes theirs. I like the look you are going for. I can completely understand wanting to dress formal as your working persona - I am similar. I think you are very close to perfect, and just a few small edits will make you look perfectly polished. You look a bit 1940’s in the best way possible.

ZealousidealBonus537

I love your style - I would wear any of those - I’m also a busty gal so I am a big fan of wearing a lace cami under shirts when mine are on display like in #2. Totally unfair that we get called unprofessional or worse because shirts are mostly made for flat chested gals. Don’t even get me started on button-ups 🙃 But yeah - cover them up for work.

SaltyBaoBaos

Without reading your description and looking at your outfits, I immediately assumed teach / professor / formal professional educator. Then I read your description, yeah I think its good and clean for a formal attire.

ilovepizza962

I think they’re all cute but the shirt on #2 feels like a going out top. I wouldn’t wear that as a prof.

Don’t confuse dressy with professional. Some of these looks are dressy, but not professional. You can also dress casually and still look professional. The pants in 2 are great, just need a different top. That black top just isn’t the right style for work. Looks mismatched. I’d wear that black top with jeans if I were going out to a casual bar. The blouse in 3 needs to be styled differently. I’d probably find cute pants to tuck into or nice jeans. The heels and skirts just remind me of the outfits college kids would wear to model un conferences like 10 years ago, when they were just trying to put together a professional outfit with the clothes they already owned. You should look for different styles of skirts because I don’t see how you could style them differently. The pumps are also pretty dated. Mules, loafers, booties, and nice sneakers are more common these days.

StinkyBastardCat

I think they all look great, and like when people choose to be a bit more dressy in the business-casual world. I'll preface that I am one to push dress code boundaries at times, but you look like a modern young professional to me. I suppose I could see the argument that the top on 2 is a bit low cut, so if you found a similar shirt that is just the square neck line without the dip, that'd squash that commentary here (though this is my favorite outfit of the bunch and something I would also wear to work). Granted, I also have minimal cleavage, so low cut tops don't have the same effect on me, but I think it's lame that women with boobs are punished for... having boobs.

Th3LastBastion

I think they're all perfectly fine, professionally. If I were a student, I'd definitely sign up for your class

Russell_Milk858

I love your username. It seems the rest of the comments helped sort out your outfits, but your username was impressive

ha77ows

Youngish professor here, and I like dressing up a little bit for work because it makes me feel more put together, but I admit it’s not necessary. That said, 1 and 2 are a little too revealing. Put a cardigan with 1 and change the top with 2 and all three outfits would work well.

Atomic_Badger_PNW

My dogs is barkin' just looking at those shoes.

happynargul

Oh my feet hurt just looking at it, but if you're used to it... That being said, casual conservative is the way I'd go. 3 is ok, the pants on 2 look great but the top is inappropriate.

Take any negative feedback here with a truckload of salt. Academia isn’t exactly known for having exceptionally attractive scholars and you’ll need to parse constructive criticism from veiled jealously. I think all three are very flattering, but #2 might be pushing the boundaries a little bit :)

jlovelysoul

If you are the professor I’d say 3 is your best choice.

cranberries87

3. I love outfits 1 and 2, but not for work (1 could fly with a jacket or blazer over it). 3 looks the most professional. I’d save the sleeveless tops and bewbs for after-hours.

Exact-Dig-7026

\#3 blouse, #2 pants

MidnightRaven24

#2 shirt with #3's skirt I think would look really pretty!

itsmisstiff

My feet hurt for you but can you please make sure you wear each of these outfits at some point at school? Cos they’re all awesomeeee! For the first day I would do number 3 just to set some authority/seriousness. You are great at picking out clothes. Can you please come be my friend/neighbor and go clothes shopping with me OP? 😁

TheQueenCarambar19

3rd is too much, 2nd is too much boob, 1st is really cute

bayleebugs

All the comments saying 1 and 2 are not appropriate are ridiculous. You're allowed to exist with boobs.

DeviousDelores

Outfit 3 gives me old lady vibes! 1 and 2 would look better with a blazer

Certain_Category1926

1 by itself is excellent.

BlueGalangal

No, it is not professional without a blazer.

EmeraldIbis

Do professors really dress so formally in the US? At every university I've worked at (in the UK, Germany and Austria) professors typically wear a t-shirt and jeans...

Jessisan

All of my professors wore business attire where I went to school. On a rare occasion, my neuroscience prof, might come in wearing jeans and a brain t-shirt. I’m unsure if they had an actual dress code, but it was rare seeing anyone wear jeans. I think it would be cute if OP mixed some items that leaned towards casual with her business attire. For example, a form fitting tee with outfit 2. Or maybe a regular tee (maybe related to the subject she teaches) tucked into the skirt in pic 1. The shirt in pic 3 could be paired with some comfy capri linen pants. I also love a good tee shirt/blazer combo. I think that would be a good way from keeping the looks from feeling “old” or “stuffy” while maintaining professionalism and separating herself from the students.

REC_HLTH

There is a wide range of what professors wear in the U.S. Most at our university choose a business-casual style.

creekgal

All my professors wore Birkenstock, jeans and blazers/sweaters. Nothing like what you have there. But you look great. I like 2

EmeraldIbis

So much this... I don't know where everyone else studied for them to think that OP looks too informal(!?)

larrybird56

There's a difference between informal and unprofessional.

levon999

Depends on which university. All of them are too nice/formal for 90% of US universities.

mebg1956

Shoes are a bit much. Don’t look comfortable or professional.

DGTXgirl

The heels look dated. Maybe add a dressy white sneaker or pointed toe flats. Blazers and wide leg trousers to mix up your outfits.

Modesty541

I think they all can work. One I don't see any problem with as long as your comfortable in the shoes. 2 I know it's higher education but it might be to much cleavage for a professional setting. Three I would be worried about being able to see your bra, others had great recommendations for that. You look great in all of them and they achieve the not old and stuffy your going for.

Xxx_chicken_xxx

The problem with 3 is the bra not the outfit. White bras are visible just about under anything. Nude or pink bras are the way to go
